Known for his fiery guitar work and genre-blending style, Kirchen delivers his trademark mix of rockabilly and honky-tonk — the sound that earned him legendary status and a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance for the chicken-pickin’ classic “Poultry in Motion.” Kirchen’s music draws from a wide spectrum of American roots styles including boogie-woogie, jazz, jump blues, Western swing, country, and folk. Long before the term Americana existed, he was already playing it. As co-founder of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Kirchen helped pioneer the genre, powering the band’s hit version of “Hot Rod Lincoln” to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the early 1970s. With Cat Out of the Bag, Kirchen expands his musical palette while honoring those roots.
