New Orleans cultural torchbearers Chief Bo Dollis Jr. and The Wild Magnolias unveil their latest single, a bold reimagining of the Otis Redding classic “Hard to Handle,” featuring powerhouse vocalist Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph of Galactic and the GRAMMY-winning Tank and the Bangas.

In this fresh take, Joseph steps into the spotlight with commanding presence, transforming the song into a declaration of strength and self-assurance from a female perspective. “When a woman as powerful and dynamic as Jelly sings ‘Hard to Handle,’ it flips the script,” says Dollis. “She’s not waiting to be chosen—she’s owning her power, her magic, and letting the world know, ‘I know what I bring, and you better be ready for it.’”

Infused with the vibrant energy of New Orleans and the rhythmic soul of the Mardi Gras Indian tradition, this rendition brings new life and meaning to a timeless classic.

“Hard to Handle” appears on Chip Off the Old Block, the upcoming album from Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. and The Wild Magnolias, out June 13 via Strong Place Music. This dynamic new release masterfully fuses the vibrant rhythms of West Africa, the gritty soul of Memphis blues, and the deep grooves of New Orleans funk and jazz—all rooted in the powerful musical tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians.

The album features a powerhouse ensemble, including members of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section: Archie “Hubbie” Turner, Rev. Charles Hodges, and Leroy Hodges—known for shaping the iconic sound of Memphis soul—as well as rising guitarist Lina Beach. To celebrate the release, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. and The Wild Magnolias will perform a special hometown show at The Broadside in New Orleans on June 13.

A celebrated performer, cultural ambassador, and educator, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. carries on the rich legacy of the Mardi Gras Indians—also known as Black Masking Indians—an essential part of New Orleans’ cultural and musical heritage. These tradition bearers are renowned for their hand-crafted, bead-and-feather suits, deep-rooted oral histories, and high-energy musical rituals that date back generations. Dollis Jr. assumed leadership of The Wild Magnolias following the passing of his father, the legendary Big Chief Bo Dollis Sr., in 2015.

Chip Off the Old Block was co-produced by GRAMMY winners Boo Mitchell, Martin Shore, and Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), and recorded at Number C Studio in New Orleans and the iconic Royal Studios in Memphis. “When we worked with Bo Dollis Jr. on Take Me to the River: New Orleans, I envisioned pairing him with the Hi Rhythm Section,” says Shore. “It was a perfect meeting point for Louisiana funk and Memphis soul.”

The Wild Magnolias have brought their electrifying sound to audiences around the world, performing everywhere from Australia and Japan to the Summer Olympics and the White House. In 2023, they were honored with the Jazz Award at the esteemed Ascona Jazz Festival. Their past collaborators include a long list of legends, such as Dr. John, Cyril Neville, Leo Nocentelli, Trombone Shorty, Galactic, Master P, and Widespread Panic.

With Chip Off the Old Block, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr. and The Wild Magnolias continue to evolve and honor a singular New Orleans tradition—while lighting a bold new path forward.
