Thousands of musicians claim allegiance to Chicago blues, but only a select few possess the talent and depth to elevate the music to something truly transcendent. Giles Robson and John Primer are two such artists, and their collaborative album, Ten Chicago Blues Classics, radiates both raw authenticity and a rare, controlled intensity. Primer has been a master of his craft for decades. His deep connection to the gritty blues of South Side Chicago was forged through countless nights playing guitar alongside legends like Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, and the aptly named Magic Sam and Magic Slim. Now in his seventies, Primer stands as a living guardian of the Chicago blues tradition. Fortunately, his brilliance has left its mark on Jersey-based harmonica virtuoso Giles Robson, whose technical mastery, creative vision, and unwavering passion have earned him a place among the world's top blues harmonica players. The collaboration began in 2023 when Robson and Primer met during a UK tour organized by Robson, featuring Primer and other "Chicago Blues Legends." Their musical chemistry was undeniable, and Primer returned to the UK in early 2024 for another tour, this time joined by a European rhythm section. Later that year, the duo performed together across five venues, including Robson’s hometown of Jersey. Their connection was electric—so much so that Primer exclaimed to an enthusiastic crowd, “When Giles and I play the blues, we put hot sauce on it so you can feel it!” Given their powerful synergy, recording an album together was the natural next step. Reflecting on the experience, Robson describes it as “one of the most memorable and magical moments” of his career—“a dream come true.” The album’s magic lies in its fresh, vibrant approach. Robson, who sings on seven tracks, and Primer breathe new life into classic tunes without resorting to clichés or nostalgia. As Robson puts it, “Blues and jazz are interpretive arts. Even the most familiar songs, like Willie Dixon’s ‘My Babe,’ can sound fresh and alive when approached with spontaneity, creativity, and deep respect.” This ethos infuses every track. Robson marvels at Primer’s artistry: “Recording with John was incredible. He’s like a one-man orchestra, generating a mesmerizing energy that drives each song from start to finish. It’s a rare gift.” Rare energy. Rare magic. Experience it for yourself on Ten Chicago Blues Classics—an album that redefines what Chicago blues can be. —Frank-John Hadley Tracks: 01.
