Following the release of Bruise nine years ago under the Solomon Cole Band moniker, New Zealand singer-songwriter and guitarist Solomon Cole makes his debut on the Dixiefrog Records roster with a new album produced by Eddie Rayner, the legendary ex-keyboardist of Split Enz and Crowded House.

While the album credits list Cole as the sole performer, subtle layers reveal a broader sonic palette  from the haunting female harmonies that grace “Bullet” and the lush string textures surrounding it, to the ethereal echoes present in “A Little South of Heaven,” “Apochryphal Flood Blues,” and the album’s title track. Despite these embellishments, the production remains raw, intimate, and deeply human, reflecting the unfiltered personality of an artist unafraid to expose his solitude.

Spanning from the apocalyptic tension of “Day of Reckoning” to the spiritual grit of “Call My Maker,” Cole forges a powerful bridge between the preachin’ blues of Son House and Skip James (“Get Up Get On”) and the haunted mysticism of Coco Robicheaux and Jeffrey Lee Pierce (“Woman I Weep”). The result is a collection that feels both ancient and immediate  an unflinching exploration of redemption, desire, and defiance.
