 Steep Canyon Rangers Share New Single “Heart’s the Only Compass (feat. Steve Martin)” from their forthcoming 15th studio album, Next Act GRAMMY Award–winning bluegrass and Americana ensemble Steep Canyon Rangers have released “Heart’s the Only Compass (feat. Steve Martin),” the third track unveiled from their forthcoming 15th studio album, Next Act, out May 22 via Yep Roc Records. Written by Graham Sharp, the song reflects on chance, family history, and the unknowable paths that shape our lives, ultimately landing on the simple truth of trusting one’s heart. The track was recorded by Julian Dreyer at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville, NC, and produced by Mike Ashworth alongside the band. Next Act marks a return to the Rangers’ bluegrass roots while continuing their tradition of thoughtful, contemporary songwriting. The album features guest appearances by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell on “Halfway to Reno,” and Celia Woodsmith of Della Mae on “Hard Times.” Previously released tracks include the title cut “Next Act,” an anthem of reinvention, and “Circling the Drain,” a high-energy standout inspired in part by Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead. In support of the album, Steep Canyon Rangers will tour extensively from February through June, with select dates alongside Steve Martin & Martin Short, a performance with the Nashville Symphony, and festival appearances at MerleFest, Kerrville Folk Festival, and RockyGrass. Over their 25-year career, the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inductees have released 14 studio albums, collaborated extensively with Steve Martin, and earned three GRAMMY nominations—including a win for Best Bluegrass Album—cementing their status as one of modern bluegrass’s most enduring and innovative bands.
