The Boneshakers Unplug for New Album “Pull Up The Roots”

The Boneshakers return with Pull Up The Roots: The Berlin & Hotel Sessions, an intimate new recording that strips one of America’s most electrifying blues and soul bands down to the bone. Marking their second release for Gulf Coast Records, the collection embraces raw performance over perfection, capturing the chemistry, spontaneity and fearless musicianship that has defined the band for more than three decades.

Fronted by the unmistakable voice of Jenny Langer and the soulful, deeply expressive guitar work of Randy Jacobs formerly of Was (Not Was), Pull Up The Roots leaves behind studio excess in favour of honest, acoustic arrangements where every note, breath and performance remains beautifully exposed. Produced by Jacobs, Langer and acclaimed producer John Wooler, the recordings reveal a band completely at ease with letting the songs speak for themselves.

Recorded primarily at Kaleidoscope Studios in Berlin, the project continued wherever the road would allow. Additional performances and overdubs were captured in studios across the United States, as well as hotel and motel rooms between shows, giving the EP an unmistakable sense of movement and lived experience. Rather than disguising its journey, Pull Up The Roots embraces it, preserving the spirit of musicians creating whenever and wherever inspiration struck.

The sessions also brought together a remarkable cast of musicians whose contributions add colour and character throughout the record. Longtime Boneshakers collaborators Holly Montgomery (bass, vocals) and Arthur Thompson (percussion, vocals) provide the rhythmic heartbeat, while special guests Joe Sublett lends his unmistakable tenor and baritone saxophone, Mark Pender delivers soulful harmonica, Jon Gilutin adds rich keyboard textures, and Oliver Leiber contributes additional acoustic guitar. Together, the ensemble creates an organic, collaborative sound that feels effortless, intimate, and unmistakably alive.

The six-song collection effortlessly moves between bold reinterpretations and original compositions. Classics from The Meters, Charlie Singleton, Talking Heads, and Don Was are reimagined through The Boneshakers’ unmistakable blend of Detroit soul, New Orleans groove, blues and rock & roll swagger, while original tracks including “Eat A Peach” and “Fly On The Wall” stand proudly alongside them, highlighting the band’s continued creative evolution.

Pull Up The Roots: The Berlin & Hotel Sessions is a celebration of authenticity. Unfiltered, road-worn and full of character, it captures The Boneshakers at their most revealing, proving that when the production is stripped away, great songs, great players and genuine soul are more than enough.
