One of the standout moments on the band’s forthcoming album Off The Fence, the track marks a special collaboration decades in the making. Off The Fence is the band’s first release for Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound and arrives January 16.

British singer, songwriter, and GRAMMY®-nominated artist James Hunter first crossed paths with Morrison in the early 1990s, appearing on two of his albums: 1994’s live release A Night In San Francisco and 1995’s Days Like This. The collaboration continued when Morrison guested on Hunter’s 1996 album Believe What I Say. Now, more than 30 years later, Morrison returns the favor once again.

“I’ve always reckoned Van’s voice from the paint-stripping howls of the Them days to the Smokey Robinson-esque sweetness of ‘Crazy Love,’” Hunter says. “It’s a real kick having him sing on something I wrote. Is that a trip or what?”
Hunter adds, “‘Ain’t That A Trip’ came from a suggestion that I write something in the style of Jimmy Reed. It’s rather more verbose than Jimmy’s songs but that kind of heartfelt simplicity isn’t easy to pull off.”

A revered fixture on the soul and rhythm & blues scene for over three decades, Hunter has been dubbed “The United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer” by MOJO. His eleventh studio album delivers another masterclass in timeless rhythm and soul, while also marking 40 years since his recording debut. Featuring twelve original songs, Off The Fence showcases Hunter’s unmistakable blend of smooth vocal finesse, lived-in grit, and wry lyrical charm. The band recently shared the album’s debut single, “A Sure Thing,” an infectious, Northern Soul-infused track brimming with Hunter’s celebrated wordplay.

The James Hunter Six: James Hunter (vocals, guitar), Myles Weeks (double bass), Rudy Albin Petschauer (drums), Andrew Kingslow (keyboards, percussion), Michael Buckley (baritone saxophone), and Drew Vanderwinckel (tenor saxophone) are renowned for their musicianship and near-telepathic rapport. That deep musical understanding is evident throughout Off The Fence, where each arrangement serves the song with precision and soul.

Born in Colchester, Essex in 1962, Hunter’s musical journey began 66 miles from London and was forever altered at age nine, when his grandmother gave him her Dansette record player and a stack of old 78s. Among them was Jackie Wilson’s 1958 hit “Reet Petite,” a record that helped bridge R&B into soul and opened a gateway to a new musical universe for a young boy growing up in 1970s Essex. That spark has burned ever since, fueling a career rooted in authenticity, devotion to craft, and a lifelong love of soul music.
