Paul Simon has scheduled a farewell performance for July 15th at London's Hyde Park. The gig is the only concert Simon has scheduled for 2018 so far. It is unclear if the show is meant to be an official retirement send-off.

​The concert, officially billed as Homeward Bound: The Farewell Performance, will also feature James Taylor and his All-Star Band and Bonnie Raitt. Additional performers will be announced at a later date. Tickets go on sale February 2nd, while a pre-sale starts February 1st.

Simon's performance will close out the British Summer Time festival, a 10-day event that will also feature sets from Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, Bruno Mars, the Cure and Michael Bublé.

Simon spent much of the past two years touring in support of his most recent album, 2016's Stranger to Stranger. That same year, Simon began to hint at retirement, telling The New York Times, "Showbiz doesn't hold any interest for me … I am going to see what happens if I let go. Then I’m going to see, who am I? Or am I just this person that was defined by what I did? And if that’s gone, if you have to make up yourself, who are you?"

Throughout his career, Simon has staged several memorable concerts at London's Hyde Park, most notably another so-called "Farewell" show in 1993, when he reunited with Art Garfunkel. Last year, Simon released a live album/concert film, The Concert in Hyde Park, documenting his career-spanning performance at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in 2012.

De 84-jarige Quincy Jones, die in zijn carrière 28 Grammy Awards won en samenwerkte met grootheden als Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tupac en Frank Sinatra, heeft het niet begrepen op het Amerikaanse popfenomeen Taylor Swift. "We hebben meer songs nodig. Fucking songs, geen catchy riffjes", aldus Jones in een interview met het Amerikaanse tijdschrift GQ.

Op de vraag of Swift - zoals sommige waarnemers beweren - geldt als één van de beste songwriters van haar tijd reageerde Jones geamuseerd: "Songs schrijven is hard werken en vereist vakmanschap." "Bedrevenheid," zei Jones nog, "dát mist Swifts muziek. Weten waar je mee bezig bent. (...) De enige plek waar je 'succes' eerder tegenkomt dan 'werk' is het woordenboek, en dat is vanwege de alfabetische volgorde."

"Een geweldig nummer kan van de slechtste zanger ter wereld een ster maken. Maar een slecht lied kan door de drie beste zangers ter wereld niet gered worden", aldus de 84-jarige.

Toch is Jones geen rabiate tegenstander van populaire artiesten. Hij is bijvoorbeeld een fan van de Amerikaanse rapper Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, Drake en zangeressen Mary J. Blige en Jennifer Hudson.

Van Deense female black metal over Londense, door hiphop influenced jazz, van Zuid-Afrikaanse gqom over Turkse psychedelica, van heetgeblakerde footwork uit Chicago over Bulgaarse stemmenpracht, van Japans minimalisme over Schotse hiphop: nog nooit klónk BRDCST zo divers.

Europese primeur: Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares x special guest Lisa Gerrard 

De wereld sluit Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares opnieuw volop in de armen met extatische reviews van hun passage op Le Guess Who? vorig jaar én de gloednieuwe single ‘Pora Sotunda’ met niemand minder dan diehard fan LISA GERRARD (Dead Can Dance). Zij liet zich ooit ontvallen: ‘I saw them live and I just thought: that’s IT. That’s the top. You can’t go further.’ Lisa Gerrard is ook volop present op het nieuwe, dit voorjaar te verschijnen album van Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares en maakt zich speciaal vrij om naar BRDCST af te zakken. Een hele eer én een Europese primeur!

BRDCST goes footwork

Ontstaan in Chicago in de  jaren ’90(!) met een snelheid van 160 bpm werd footwork sterk beïnvloed door house en techno. Dé iconen zijn ongetwijfeld pionier R.P. Boo, Dj Rashad die (onder het Londense label Hyperdub) voor internationale erkenning van het genre zorgde én Jlin en Jana Rush, die met hun superbe albums een plek veroverden in menig eindejaarslijst van ‘17. BRDCST kondigt dan ook met trots JANA RUSH aan, die met ‘Pariah’ tekende voor ‘The best album to come out of Chicagoan footwork to date’.

AB Salon (Steenstraat 23) en muziekbar Bonnefooi (Steenstraat 8) vormen dit jaar dagelijks de vaste uitvalsbasis om gratis spannende en vernieuwende klanken te ontdekken.

• In Bonnefooi trekken we de kaart van de Afrikaanse diaspora met o.a. SCRAAATCH FEAT. MHYSA & LAWD KNOWS en de excellente footwork van bovenvermelde JANA RUSH. Bovendien leggen we een focus op het NON Worldwide-collectief (zie verder).

• In AB Salon houden we het intiemer met het Afrikaanse minimalisme van STELLA CHIWESHE, de onthaastingsmuziek van TOMOKO SAUVAGE & NIELS VAN HEERTUM en de pure folky songwriterspracht van ERIC CHENAUX en AARON ROCHE. Die laatste bracht met ‘HaHa HuHu’ overigens één van de mooiste albums van ’17 uit (denk: ‘Illinoise’ van Sufjan Stevens meets electronicakunstanaar Fennesz). Global sounds mag je verwachten van Stella Chiweshe, de Egyptische NADAH EL SHAZLY (volgens The Quietus ‘An Egyptian voice that will haunt your dreams for days.’) en het Sloveense ŠIROM (voor fans van Terry Riley, Hauschka, folk & Sun Ra).

BRDCST nodigt opnieuw een aantal dwarse labels uit. CONSOULING SOUNDS, tak:til, Glitterbeat en HARBINGER SOUND (zie onder) worden nu vergezeld door BLACKEST EVER BLACK en NON WORLDWIDE.
 
BRDCST koestert al jaren het intrigerende UK-label BLACKEST EVER BLACK dat inmiddels meer dan 100 releases uitbracht. Het label presenteert met CARLA DAL FORNO, SILVIA KASTEL, de Finse Belg AF URSIN en de donkere jungle van PESSIMIST een mooie dwarsdoorsnede van hun onbestaande auditieve grenzen.
 
GLITTERBEAT imponeerde ons de jongste jaren dan weer met bijzonder spannende ‘wereldse’ albums. Dit jaar is het op BRDCST de beurt aan de Turkse psychedelica van BABA ZULA, JOSHUA ABRAMS & NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY, ŠIROM, de Maghreb bass adventures van AMMAR 808 & THE MAGREB UNIT (Kel Assouf meets Bargou 08) en ‘the mbira queen of zimbabwe’ STELLA CHIWESHE.
 
NON WORLDWIDE, een collectief met Afrikaanse roots, stelt elektronisch experiment voorop. Hun missie? ’A rejection of mass culture and existing political conditions.’ NON Worldwide werd opgericht door Chino Amobi (us), de Belgisch/Congolese Nkisi (uk) en Angel-Ho (Zuid Afrika). BRDCST slaagde erin om een handvol NON-affiliated acts over te halen: CHINO AMOBI, NKISI, FAKA, SCRAAATCH en BONAVENTURE zullen allen van de partij zijn.

Sleaford Mods nodigt op zaterdag 7 april volop bevriende en muzikaal geradicaliseerde artiesten uit. Zowat allemaal zijn ze gelinkt aan HARBINGER SOUND, het label van hun manager/boss (sic) Steve Underwood dat voornamelijk grossiert in brutale, underground postpunk en experimentele noise. Bekendste naam? STEVE IGNORANT, oprichter van anarcho-punkband Crass aan wie Sleaford Mods schatplichtig is. Het verdere programma is een pure ontdekkingstocht langs de lo-fi synthpunk van NACHTHEXEN, de hardcorenoise van THE LOWEST FORM, de postpunk van STRUCTURE en de DIY antifolk van MARK WYNN. Statement van zijn management: 
Jason Derulo’s European tour has to be rescheduled to October 2018 as he finalizes plan for his new album coming late summer. Existing tickets will be valid for the rescheduled show.

Jeremy Loops is "big" in eigen land Zuid-Afrika en breekte ook internationaal door met zijn catchy songs en elektronische loops. Na uitmuntende shows op Couleur Café, Brussels Summer Festival, Les Ardentes, OLT Rivierenhof en in de AB komt hij opnieuw naar Brussel, op 12 april in La Madeleine.
Een verzameling van geluiden die hij maakt met zijn gitaar, mondharmonica, ukelele en beatbox worden via zijn looppedals vervormd tot een eclectisch, harmonisch, maar bovenal poppy geheel, van hip-hop en electronica tot traditionele Afrikaanse muziek. Zo neemt de Zuid-Afrikaan zijn publiek mee op een muzikale reis, die beïnvloed is door indrukken uit de hele wereld, die hij al werkend op een jacht opdeed.
Na twee jaar intensief getourd te hebben over de hele wereld, ging hij in 2017 de studio in met Jake Gosling (schreef voor James Bay, Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes) en Will Hicks (producer van o.a. Ed Sheeran, Lilly Allen, Bastille) om zijn nieuw album op te nemen. Twee singles van zijn gloednieuw album zijn reeds verschenen: 'The Shore’ (ft. Motheo Moleko) en 'Waves’.

‘Belgisch-Egyptische songschrijver was een van de muzikale sensaties van 2017’ titelde De Morgen recentelijk nog. En daar is niets van gelogen. Met amper twee EP’s op zijn CV verkocht Tamino elke zaal (AB, De Roma en Vooruit) uit waar hij optrad en als kers op de taart pakte hij moeiteloos Rock Werchter in. Zijn singles werden over alle radionetten heen grijs gedraaid en 2018 ziet er nóg veelbelovender uit. Niet enkel het buitenland lonkt (zo schreef The Independent over Tamino: ‘Tamino has the most extraordinary voice we've heard in a long, long time.’), maar Tamino zal tevens zijn langverwachte debuut baren. En mogen we daar nog een heus AB-concert aan toevoegen?

Iconische popheld Elvis Costello komt voor het eerst naar OLT Rivierenhof met zijn vaste begeleidingsband The Imposters.

Met maar liefst zeven Grammy’s is Bruno Mars de ster van de avond geworden tijdens de Grammy Awards in New York. Hij sleepte onder meer de belangrijkste prijzen in de wacht: Record Of The Year (24K Magic), Album Of The Year (24K Magic) en Song Of The Year (That’s What I Like). De zanger bedankte in zijn speech zijn vriendin Jessica Caban, met wie hij sinds 2011 samen is. “Ik hou van je schatje! Bedankt voor je steun tijdens dit hele proces.” Hier vind je het overzicht van alle winnaars.Bruno Mars won ook een Grammy voor Best R&B Album, Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical), Best R&B Song en Best R&B Performance. Hiermee verzilverde hij alle categorieën waarin hij genomineerd was. De zanger won al 11 Grammy’s in voorgaande jaren.

Runner-up was Kendrick Lamar, die vijf Grammy’s op zijn schoorsteenmantel kan bijzetten. De rapper won Best Rap Album (Damn), Best Rap/Sung Performance (Loyalty, feat. Rihanna) en Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song en Best Music Video voor zijn track Humble. Lamar opende het muziekfestijn met een politiek getint optreden, in samenwerking met U2 en Dave Chappelle.

Jay Z was vooraf de grote favoriet met acht nominaties, maar ging met lege handen naar huis. De rapper zat vooraan met zijn vrouw Beyoncé en hun oudste dochter Blue Ivy, die Kendrick zijn bewondering voor Jay-Z hoorden uitspreken: “Jay for president!” Ook zei Kendrick geïnspireerd te zijn geraakt door voorgangers als Jay Z, Nas en Diddy.

Beste Nieuwe Artiest:
De jonge Alessia Cara mag zich de beste nieuwkomer van het jaar noemen. Ze won van haar tegenstanders Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, SZA en POP FIELD.

Beste Pop Solo Performance:
Ed Sheeran, steeds alleen op het podium met zijn looppedal en gitaar, werd de beste soloartiest van het jaar met zijn nummer ‘Shape of You’. Daarnaast waren ook ‘Love So Soft’ (Kelly Clarkson), ‘Praying’ (Kesha), ‘Million Reasons’ (Lady Gaga) en ‘What About Us’ (P!nk) genomineerd.

Beste Pop Duo/Groepsoptreden:
‘Feel It Still’ van ‘Portugal. The Man’ werd verkozen tot beste groepsoptreden van het jaar. Ze wonnen het daarmee van ‘Something Just Like This’ (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay), ‘Despacito’ (Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Featuring Justin Bieber), ‘Thunder’ (Imagine Dragons) en ‘Stay’ (Zedd & Alessia Cara).

Beste Traditionele Pop Vocal Album:
‘Tony Bennett Celebrates 90’ ging met deze titel aan de haal. Andere albums die in aanmerking kwamen waren ‘Nobody But Me (Deluxe Version)’ (Michael Bublé), ‘Triplicate’ (Bob Dylan), ‘In Full Swing’ (Seth MacFarlane) en ‘Wonderland’ (Sarah McLachlan).

Beste Pop Vocal Album:
‘÷ (Divide)’ van Ed Sheeran sleepte de titel van beste popalbum in de wacht. Hij won het van ‘Kaleidoscope EP’ (Coldplay), ‘Lust for Life’ (Lana Del Rey), ‘Evolve’ (Imagine Dragons), ‘Rainbow’ (Kesha) en ‘Joanne’ (Lady Gaga).

Beste Dance Opname:
De prijs ging naar ‘Tonite’ van LCD Soundsystem. ‘Bambro Koyo Ganda’ (Bonobo Featuring Innov Gnawa), ‘Cola’ (Camelphat & Elderbrook), ‘Andromeda’ (Gorillaz Featuring DRAM) en ‘Line Of Sight’ (Odesza Featuring WYNNE & Mansionair) vielen naast de prijzen.

Beste Hedendaagse Instrumental Album:
De award ging naar ‘Prototype’ (Jeff Lorber Fusion). ‘What If’ (The Jerry Douglas Band), ‘Spirit’ (Alex Han), ‘Mount Royal’ (Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge) en ‘Bad Hombre’ (Antonio Sanchez) grepen ernaast.

Beste Rock Performance:
De awards ging postuum naar ‘You Want It Darker’ van Leonard Cohen. Daarmee liet de man ‘The Promise’ (Chris Cornell), ‘Run’ (Foo Fighters), ‘No Good’ (Kaleo) en ‘Go To War’ (Nothing More) achter zich.

Best Metal Performance:
De beste metal ging naar ‘Sultan’s Curse’ van Mastodon. Ook ‘Invisible Enemy’ (August Burns Red), ‘Black Hoodie’ (Body Count), ‘Forever’ (Code Orange) en ‘Clockworks’ (Meshuggah) ontvingen nominaties.

Beste Rock nummer:
Het beste rock nummer werd ‘Run’ van de Foo Fighters. Ook ‘Atlas, Rise!’ (Metallica), ‘Blood In The Cut’ (K.Flay), ‘Go To War’ (Nothing More) en ‘The Stage’ (Avenged Sevenfold) waren genomineerd.

Beste Rock Album:
The War On Drugs ging met de award aan de haal voor hun album ‘A Deeper Understanding’. Ze wonnen het van ‘Emperor Of Sand’ (Mastodon), ‘Hardwired…To Self-Destruct’ (Metallica), ‘The Stories We Tell Ourselves’ (Nothing More) en ‘Villains’ (Queens Of the Stone Age).

Beste Alternative Album:
The National won deze award voor ‘Sleep Well Beast’. Andere genomineerden waren ‘Everything Now’ (Arcade Fire), ‘Humanz’ (Gorillaz), ‘American Dream’ (LCD Soundsystem) en ‘Pure Comedy’ (Father John Misty).

Beste R&B Performance:
Weer een award voor Bruno Mars, deze keer voor ‘That’s What I Like’. Het nummer versloeg ‘Get You’ (Daniel Caesar Featuring Kali Uchis), ‘Distraction’ (Kehlani), ‘High’ (Ledisi) en ‘The Weekend’ (SZA).

Beste Traditionele R&B Performance:
Deze prijs ging naar ‘Redbone’ van Childish Gambino. Andere genomineerden waren ‘Laugh And Move On’ (The Baylor Project), ’What I’m Feelin” (Anthony Hamilton Featuring The Hamiltones), ‘All The Way’ (Ledisi) en ‘Still’ (Mali Music).

Beste R&B Song:
Ook hier weer succes voor Bruno Mars met ‘That’s What I Like’. Hij versloeg ‘First Began’  (PJ Morton) ‘Location’ (Khalid), ′Redbone’ (Childish Gambino) en ′Supermodel’ (SZA).

Beste Urban Contemporary Album:
Hier gaat ‘Starboy’ van The Weeknd met de prijs lopen. ‘Free 6LACK’ (6LACK), ‘“Awaken, My Love!”’ (Childish Gambino), ′American Teen’ (Khalid) en ′Ctrl’ (SZA) grepen ernaast. 

Beste R&B Album:
Deze titel ging ook naar Bruno Mars, voor zijn album ‘24K Magic’. ‘Freudian’ (Daniel Caesar), ‘Let Love Rule’ (Ledisi), ‘Gumbo’ (PJ Morton) en ′Feel the Real’ (Musiq Soulchild) vielen niet in de prijzen. 

Beste Rap Performance:
Deze award ging naar ‘HUMBLE’ van Kendrick Lamar. ‘Bounce Back’ (Big Sean), ‘Bodak Yellow’ (Cardi B), ′4:44′ (Jay-Z), ′Bad And Boujee’ (Migos Featuring Lil Uzi Vert) hadden minder geluk. 

Beste Rap/Sung Performance:
Kendrick Lamar Featuring Rihanna gaan hier met de award aan de haal voor hun nummer ‘LOYALTY’. 

Beste Rap Song:
‘HUMBLE.’ van Kendrick Lamar wint alweer een award. De plaats versloeg ‘Bodak Yellow’ (Cardi B), ‘Chase Me’ (Danger Mouse Featuring Run The Jewels & Big Boi), ‘Sassy’ (Rapsody) en ‘The Story Of O.J.’ (Jay-Z).

Beste Rap Album:
Ook hier won Lamar met zijn album ‘DAMN’. Hij liet ‘4:44’ (Jay-Z), ‘Culture’ (Migos), Laila’s Wisdom (Rapsody), ′Flower Boy’ (Tyler, The Creator) achter zich.

Beste Country Solo Performance:
De beste country performance ging naar ‘Either Way’ van Chris Stapleton.

Beste Country Duo/Groepsoptreden:
Deze award ging naar ‘Better Man’ van Little Big Town.

Beste Country Song:
‘Broken Halos’ van Chris Stapleton won deze award, Taylor Swift greep als songwirter naar de prijzen in deze categorie. Ze kwam in aanmerking voor ‘Better Man’ (Little Big Town).

Beste Country Album:
​‘From a Room: Volume 1’ bracht Chris Stapleton alweer een Grammy op.

Beste New Age Album:

Na hun welgesmaakte passage in de Ancienne Belgique, met Franz Ferdinand onder de naam FFS in 2015 en hun eigen show in september vorig jaar, kondigt Sparks vandaag een nieuwe concertdatum in België aan. Op donderdag 7 juni komt de knotsgekke band rond de broers Ron en Russel Mael namelijk naar de Arenbergschouwburg in Antwerpen.

Sinds de release van “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us”, het nummer uit 1974 waarmee ze de UK hitlijsten helemaal domineerden, slaagt Sparks er keer op keer in om, met hun originele en unieke kijk op muziek, andere artiesten te inspireren en te beïnvloeden. De twee broers uit Californië kondigden eerder al 3 shows aan in het Verenigd Koninkrijk rond hun 23ste studioalbum ‘Hippopotamus’. Het album werd door critici unaniem de hemel in geprezen en stond bovenaan in tal van eindejaarslijstjes. De nieuwe nummers (zoals bijvoorbeeld “Edith Piaf Said It Better Than Me”, “What The Hell Is This Time” en “Missionary Position”) klinken als hun oudere hits zoals “Amateur Hour” en “The Number One Song In Heaven” en klinken levendiger en relevanter als ooit te voren. Het publiek en critici zijn het er dan ook over eens dat Sparks, meester in het combineren van muziekgenres, in topvorm is!

Twee blueslegendes slaan de handen opnieuw in elkaar voor het tweede hoofdstuk van een prachtige samenwerking. Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite kondigen de nakende release van een nieuw album aan, de langverwachte opvolger van ‘Get Up’, die in 2015 bij het legendarische label Stax uitgebracht werd.


Ben Harper behoeft geen introductie meer, en kennen we als groot muziekliefhebber, uitzonderlijk muzikant en geëngageerde en innemende persoonlijkheid. Sinds zijn doorbraak met ‘Welcome To The Cruel World’ in 1994 bouwt hij onvermoeibaar verder aan een verbluffende discografie die naast zijn solowerk en duetten ook groepsprojecten met Blind Boys of Alabama, Relentless7 en uiteraard ook The Innocent Criminals bevat. Charlie Musselwhite is al net zo’n reus in het genre, sinds hij in de jaren ’60 als één van de eerste blanke artiesten toetrad tot het kleine clubje van bluesiconen. Hij is een onnavolgbaar mondharmonicaspeler maar ook een begenadigd zanger, en werkte tijdens zijn uitgebreide carrière samen met zowat alle legendes uit de blues. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, maar ook recenter met Tom Waits en Bonnie Raitt.

Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite komen op zaterdag 14 april hun nieuwe plaat ‘No Mercy In This Land’ presenteren in het intieme kader van La Madeleine in Brussel. Tickets zijn verkrijgbaar vanaf vrijdag 26 januari om 10u.

Sinds zaterdag prijkt de boodschap "The Road begins .... Take the journey on january 24th” op de officiële sociale media-kanalen van Sir Elton John. De aankondiging kreeg zelfs een persoonlijke hashtag (#EltonEvent) mee.
Hoe Elton zijn laatste grote wereldtournee zal aankondigen, is bij het schrijven van deze tekst nog een zorgvuldig bewaard geheim. Het enige wat wij kunnen verklappen is dat Elton John & band binnenkort aan zijn afscheidstournee "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" begint die op 23 mei 2019 halt houdt in het Antwerpse Sportpaleis. De laatste jaren wisselde Elton John zijn internationale "Wonderful Crazy Night Tour” af met "The Million Dollar Piano”, zijn residentie in Ceasars Palace, Las Vegas. Eind vorig jaar verscheen "Diamonds”, een ultiem overzicht van zijn werk met tekstschrijver Bernie Taupin.
 
Wie dacht dat Elton zich -samen met zijn platina platen, ontelbare prijzen en onderscheidingen- zou terugtrekken op een onbewoond eiland, had het mis voor. Hij plant om zich na de tour meer op zijn kinderen te concentreren, maar wil eerst in stijl afscheid nemen van het tourleven en zijn publiek.
"Performing live fuels me and I’m ecstatic and humbled to continue to play to audiences across the globe,” said Elton. "I plan to bring the passion and creativity that has entertained my fans for decades to my final tour.”
Vijftig jaar na zijn debuut zullen Elton en zijn indrukwekkende band live terugblikken op zijn rijkgevulde carrière. Singer-songwriter Andrew Sheppard grew up in Hailey, Idaho in an extended musical family, his mother was always playing and singing in rock and blues bands. As a kid Andrew was always at his moms rehearsals and live shows, drawing in the music as a constant. Sheppard was playing bass in punk rock bands in high school and by the age of 19, he picked up the guitar and started writing his own songs. 10 years later, he is poised to release his sophomore album, Steady Your Aim on March 23rd.

Steady Your Aim is a concept record, a musical journey in which every song was methodically thought out to fit the record.  An analog recording, it is a cinematic dreamscape narrative that is richly layered with the pedal steel, piano, cello, Wurlitzer and organ.  All of their parts are gently tucked in which leaves the listener wondering just what it is they are actually hearing.  “We used traditional sounding instruments to create a new sound,” said Sheppard.  “For example, we used cello on this record because I wanted a deep sound that didn’t come from anything electric or synthetic.  Instead of being a ‘lead’ instrument we used it as a texture tool giving the songs a more rich and ‘real’ feel.”  Produced by Sheppard, Eric Loomis and Wes Walsworth (both of whom play guitar on the album), Steady Your Aim was recorded at Ivy Hall Studio in Nashville, Tennessee.  John Mayfield at Mayfield Mastering mastered the record.

Leaving Idaho just after high school, Sheppard headed to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his other passion, skateboarding.  After a blown-out knee derailed his skating plans, he shifted his focus back to writing music.  In 2008 he formed the band, Gypsy River Haunts that disbanded in 2012.  Feeling the need to roam, he bought a car, loaded up his dog and headed around the country collecting stories for what he deemed his “record-writing road trip”.  After 8,000 miles of driving, Sheppard wound up back in Idaho with no plan to stay, but realized after landing, that all his childhood friends were great musicians and that he had everything he needed to make the record he had in mind.  Packing it up for a trip to LA, Sheppard and pals recorded Far From Here in 2015 at Bedrock Studios before heading back to Idaho.   “I realized how much more I thrive in a mountain town,” said the artist.  “I need to be in nature to feel a bit more sane.” 


But a slower pace doesn’t mean that Sheppard has slowed down.  He is on the road constantly (both solo and with band), playing festivals such as Stagecoach Country Music Festival, Treefort Music Festival, The Feed LA Festival and The Northern Rockies Music Festival.  He’s shared the stage with The Black Lillies, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Whiskey Shivers and Scott H. Biram and has toured with friend and fellow roots musician, Jeff Crosby.


On Steady Your Aim, Sheppard doesn’t sugarcoat any of the emotions in his songwriting.  He writes honest music that comes from the heart and darker places in life.  The first track of the album “Take A Walk With Me” is inspired by packing up his life in LA and heading back to the mountains…”I was tired of the coast, so I booked it for the pines. Took a swing at the open road and caught up with my mind.”  The more somber 2nd song, the title track, is a response to the first song, where he is taking the musical journey and dealing with the trials and tribulations of what being a musician on the road means.  “The instruments are meant to make you look at everything wide-screen, like watching a film,” he explains.


From the sad and happy, “Here at the Bottom”, to the protest vision of “Not My Kind”, to the traditional (yet modern) waltz of “Holy Water” Steady Your Aim takes you on a musical journey from start to finish with a modern and experimental sound.  Sheppard writes songs and music that isn’t a carbon copy of other country and Americana artists and that touches on subjects you don’t typically touch.


“Writing a song is something that I don’t, and won’t take for granted,” Sheppard vows. “Every show, every tour and every album provide me with new insight and a new way of looking at life. It helps me grow as a person and an artist and I want to see where that takes me for the rest of my life.”


Steady Your Aim releases on March 23rd, 2018 and will be available on digital and CD. ​

Deze zomer komt iconische popheld Elvis Costello voor het eerst naar OLT Rivierenhof en brengt hij zijn vaste begeleidingsband The Imposters mee. De laatste decennia trad Costello (naast "Napoleon Dynamite”, één van de vele pseudoniemen van Declan Patrick MacManus) in België op samen met The Sugarcanes, The Allen Toussaint Band, Steve Nieve, The Imposters en The Attractions.
Vorig jaar gaf hij nog twee glorieuze soloconcerten vol kippenvelmomenten in De Roma, die afgeladen vol zaten. Costello heeft dan ook geen introductie nodig. Hij is al meer dan veertig jaar bezig en heeft zijn sporen ruimschoots verdiend, voornamelijk in de jaren ’80.
Hoogtepunten opsommen is dan ook onbegonnen werk. De teller van zijn studioplaten staat momenteel op 32 en beslaat de meest uiteenlopende genres en bondgenootschappen.
De concerten van Costello zijn steeds energiek en behoorlijk catchy. Maar het is bovenal zijn stem, dat unieke timbre, die straffe uithalen waar hij zijn publiek keer op keer mee raakt.

Het Brussels Summer festival vindt dit jaar plaats van 14 tot 18 augustus. Met Roméo Elvis, Fink, Les Negresses Vertes, Orelsan en Raphaël worden ook de eerste namen vrijgegeven en start de voorverkoop!

Met vijf dagen in plaats van tien wordt deze editie wordt compacter, maar des te intenser. “Daarmee komen we tegemoet aan de verwachtingen van het grote publiek. Het festival past zich aan aan het leven in de grootstad en het consumptiegedrag zoals zich dat vandaag aftekent bij concertgangers”, onderstreept Fabrizo Gentile, de gloednieuwe directeur van het Brussels Summer Festival.
 
Roméo Elvis werd onlangs verkozen tot Man Van Het Jaar in Focus Knack, omdat hij iets voor elkaar kreeg dat niemand hem ooit voor had gedaan: Franstalige hip hop exporteren naar Vlaanderen. De rapper uit Linkebeek groeide in korte tijd uit tot een heus fenomeen. Tot een showbeest ook. Je hoeft bijgevolg geen kenner te zijn om nu al te voorspellen dat zijn concert één van de hoogtepunten van deze nieuwe editie zal worden. Met een fanbase die zich intussen uitstrekt tot Frankrijk en Canada, hebben we bovendien te maken met het grootste Belgische succesverhaal sinds de doorbraak van Stromae. Geen betere plek om hem aan het werk te zien, dan BSF!

Ook Fink blijft een uniek figuur: een succesvolle dj die zich wist om te scholen tot een bezwerende live-act, én intussen is geëvolueerd tot sterkhouder van het legendarische Ninja Tune-label. Fink – u mag Fin Greenall zeggen- stond eerder al op Pukkelpop en Rock Werchter, en ook daar maakte de zanger, gitarist en producer telkens grote indruk met zijn bruisende funk. Het voorbije jaar bracht hij liefst twee uitstekende platen uit, waarop zijn liefde voor blues en folk tot een uniek geheel werd versmolten. Iemand die al héél lang op ons verlanglijstje stond, en dit jaar is het eindelijk gelukt. Trots!

Eind jaren tachtig groeiden Les Negresses Vertes uit tot een heuse supergroep, met onverwoestbare hits als ‘Voila L’Eté’, ‘Zobi La Mouche’ en ‘C’est Pas La Mer A Boire’. De energieke kruisbestuiving tussen rock, folk en rai zorgde er voor dat de band keer op keer bruisende concerten speelde, en nu is de band even terug met een nieuwe tournee om het publiek eraan te herinneren dat de deze muziek even feestelijk als tijdloos is gebleven. Dit jaar is debuutplaat Mlah bovendien dertig jaar oud. Reden genoeg om terug de baan op te gaan, en uiteraard leidt het parcours ook naar Brussels Summer Festival.  

Op zijn vijfendertigste is Orelsan verantwoordelijk voor de comeback van het jaar. In Vlaanderen zal zijn naam wellicht niet veel belletjes doen rinkelen, maar onder de taalgrens is hij een superster wiens derde cd La Fête Est Finie onlangs nog unaniem met superlatieven werd overladen. De Franse rapper en zijn beatmaker Skread brengen teksten die uit het leven gegrepen zijn, gekruid met een vleugje humor, een mespuntje poëzie en –vooral- veel realiteitszin. Raphaël, ten slotte, komt na zijn geslaagd concert in La Madeleine eveneens terug om te bewijzen dat hij niet voor niets de coming man van de Franstalige pop wordt genoemd.

De laatste jaren werd Kamasi steeds populairder bij zowel jong als oud en kan hij de dag van vandaag zelfs gezien worden als één van de populairste jazz-artiesten.
Kamasi Washington maakt jazz van de 21ste eeuw. Hij slaagt er als geen ander in om de aandacht te vangen van luisteraars die tot dat moment niet bewust in jazz geïnteresseerd waren. De in Los Angeles opgegroeide alleskunner heeft een echte jazzachtergrond. Zo vormde hij al in high school The Young Jazz Giants, een kwartet met onder meer bassist Thundercat.
Ooit was hij sessiemuzikant voor Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Flying Lotus en producer Quincy Jones, maar met zijn arrangementen op Kendrick Lamar’s magnum opus 'To Pimp a Butterfly’ kwam hij wereldwijd écht voor het voetlicht.
In 2015 verbaasde hij menigeen met de release van zijn driedubbele 'The Epic’: een ode aan o.a. John Coltrane, met invloeden uit hip hop, R&B, latin en Afrikaanse muziek.
Nu komt hij met zijn nieuwste album 'Harmony of Difference’ naar La Madeleine in Brussel op 30 mei.

​Urban jazz harpist Mariea Antoinette provides a glimpse of her forthcoming album by dropping a euphoric single on January 29. 

SAN DIEGO (23 January 2018): The dramatic opening immediately commands attention. Emerging from the lab with a preview of her upcoming summer album, urban jazz alchemist Mariea Antoinette returns on January 29 with the jubilant "Overture," the new single featuring her mystical harp pouring forth as a bubbly protagonist. The divine stringed instrument is cast amidst an intriguing orchestral proscenium both ancient and modern constructed by a nine-piece string section, three-piece horn section and an empowering rhythm track crafted by Emmy winner and two-time Grammy-nominated producer Allan Phillips, who co-authored the composition with Antoinette.         

"Overture" is the first original recording from Antoinette since her Phillips-produced "Straight from the Harp," which was a Billboard Top 5 smooth jazz album in 2015. The new cut demonstrates that her mission to shatter preconceived limitations, stretch and abolish musical borders and boundaries, and expand the possibilities for the harp as a lead instrument in R&B, jazz, funk, soul and rock remains unwavering.    

"My goal has been to present the unexpected: to make the harp the lead instrument backed by bass, drums and percussion. I am continuously stretching and pushing the boundaries of the harp, making a clear statement that it possesses a funky and powerful place in contemporary music. The harp is unexpectedly expressive in its delivery, a forceful lead voice and soloist in the midst of it all," said the San Diego-based Antoinette.  

In addition to vaulting into the elite ranks of the Billboard chart, Antoinette's "Straight from the Harp" garnered an abundance of national airplay as well as critical plaudits. The mix of originals and R&B classics that comprise her sophomore outing was released in two versions. The spring 2015 release was enhanced in the fall the same year by two additional tracks and new cover art when it was issued as "Straight from the Harp: Special Edition." Her debut album, "Sexy Paradise," produced by the late Fattburger leader Carl Evans Jr., streeted in 2003.      

A visually striking figure that also brings sensuality to the harp, Antoinette's alluring artistry has landed her the opportunities to perform for President Barak Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, back Ne-Yo at the BET Awards, and play Grammy parties for Vanity Fair magazine, Mary J. Blige and Jamie Foxx. In addition to her solo bookings, Antoinette is part of the powerhouse all-female jazz collective Jazz in Pink, with whom she has been performing at music festivals across the U.S. and abroad since 2007.

Walk into the studio of most famous guitarists and you’ll feel like you’re at Guitar Center, spotting a massive collection of axes, each of which offers the right sound for their latest projects. Nils has gleefully defied that collector stereotype, scoring hit after contemporary urban jazz radio hit since his breakthrough 2005 single “Pacific Coast Highway” by modulating the sound of a single, trusty musical companion – the Custom Valley Arts guitar he bought shortly after moving to Los Angeles from his native Munich in the mid-80’s. On his latest BAJA/TSR album Play, he celebrates yet another opportunity to do what he does best on that instrument, with longtime musical friends who happen to be among the genre’s most renowned artists.
“This album is all about the love I have for playing my instrument and the love I felt from all the wonderful friends who stepped up when I reached out to them and helped me take this new music to the next level,” Nils says. “The wonderful result is that we put together a bigger band with a lot more horns than ever before, and a collection that stylistically allowed me to stretch out into different areas. In the spirit of capturing the meaning behind the album title, I wanted to show a richer spectrum of what I can do musically and have a lot of fun playing.”
Jazz Gems: The Best of Nils, his 2014 retrospective set compiling all of the artist’s airplay hits to date (“Pacific Coast Highway,” “Let’s Bounce,” “Jump Start,” “Ready to Play,” “Catnap,” et al), rolls like a master class not only in hit instrumental songwriting but also in the art of collaborating. Extending that spirit powerfully into Play, Nils complements his longtime core band of Clydene Jackson (keyboards, vocals), percussionist Oliver C. Brown and bassist Darryl Williams with drummers Gorden Campbell, Tony Moore and Eric Valentine, pianists Gail Jhonson and Mitchel Forman, bassist Roberto Vally, keyboardists Philippe Saisse and Nate Harasim and saxophonists Steve Cole (solo), Brandon Willis (solo), Charley Langer (horn section) and Mike Parlett (horn section).
Nils continues to cultivate an incredible creative chemistry with his pal and neighbor Johnny Britt, who, the guitarist says, “sings and plays keyboards and horns, three things I don’t do!” Britt infuses Play with his multitude of talents, from playing keys on the sparkling funk opener “Coast To Coast” and Rhodes, trumpet swells and a trumpet solo on the sensual, old school soul ballad “Sway” to adding a dynamic vocal scat to the jamming, high octane first single “Straight Down the Line” and vocals (with Jackson) on a passionate tribute to George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” Britt also brings his sizzling horn textures (via the J-Jam Horns) to a total of six tracks, including “Coast To Coast,” the infectious and danceable, gospel influenced anthem “We Got Love,” the fiery, top down party funk explosion “California” and the powerhouse old school, James Brown influenced “So Get On Up.”

Nils is the first to admit that he sometimes overstocks albums like his most recent project Alley Cat (2015)with so many in the pocket, potential airplay hits that some are inevitably overlooked; “Two of a Kind” and the title track were both Billboard Top 20 airplay hits from that recording. For Play, he took a more streamlined compositional approach, balancing upbeat “trademark” radio ready gems with fresh stylistic excursions that find Nils exploring a deeper personal artistry and the more colorful sonic possibilities of his axe.
To that end, “Goldfinger” is not the James Bond theme, but a stripped down, laid back ballad featuring the interaction of uniquely modulated rhythm and lead guitar lines. He named the track after the Bogner Goldfinger amp he uses for the lead (he used a Fender amp for the rhythm part). Another colorful departure is the trippy, mystical closer “Fire of My Heart,” which includes a symphonic, new agey intro, a reverb melody section, offbeat machine generated vocals and a build towards an exuberant gospel choir crescendo.
