 “I am purposely trying to put songs down for that very purpose,” says Parton in the final episode of the hit podcast ‘Dolly Parton’s America’ As far as anyone knows, Dolly Parton is mortal just like the rest of us, despite her seemingly boundless musical creativity and industrious hustle. Unlike most of the rest of us, however, she actually has a plan to preserve her musical legacy for all the generations yet to come.
In the final episode of WNYC’s hit podcast Dolly Parton’s America, co-producer Jad Abumrad catches Parton in a spiritual, reflective mood and poses questions to her about faith, the afterlife, and planning for the eventual end. “I’ve got hundreds, hundreds, even thousands of songs — a big part of them have never even been recorded,” Parton tells Abumrad, around 21:45 in the episode. “There’s enough stuff to go on forever with my music, to do compilation albums, to do new and original stuff. I am purposely trying to put songs down for that very purpose, to have a click track and my vocals where any arrangement could be done.” Without really going into details, Parton says she’d like for producers and songwriters of the future to be able to take her vocal tracks and overlay them with whatever kind of song they’re recording. De finalisten zijn Alison Jutta, Crooked Steps, Demi Lou, Dvkes, IKRAAAN, Rian Snoeks, Sunday Rose, The Radar Station en Yong Yello. Zij werden gekozen uit maar liefst 999 inzendingen. Een jury, bestaande uit Jan Paternoster (Black Box Revelation), Black Mamba, Jeroen De Pessemier (The Subs), Michael Ilegems (Knack Focus) en juryvoorzitster Kirsten Lemaire, pikten de negen finalisten eruit. Van 13 tot 23 januari zullen de finalisten om de beurt eens voorgesteld worden aan het grote publiek. Vanaf dan kan iedereen via de Studio Brussel-app en op de website stemmen op zijn of haar drie favoriete bands. Op 30 januari maakt Studio Brussel live vanuit Trix in Antwerpen de drie winnaars bekend. De winnaars winnen airplay op Studio Brussel en professionele begeleiding op maat in Trix. Sinds 2013 stelt Studio Brussel elk jaar een nieuwe lichting voor aan het brede publiek, drie jonge beloftevolle bands of muzikanten die alles in huis hebben om de toekomst van de Belgische muziek mee te bepalen. The event takes place at Memphis’ Cannon Center for the Performing Arts (255 North Main Street), where a Blue Carpet will lead to the theater. Het centrum krijgt de naam "Heaven's Door Distillery And Center For The Arts" en gaat nog dit jaar open, aldus de toeristische dienst van de Amerikaanse deelstaat Tennessee. De voormalige methodistische kerk in Elm Street wordt dan een whiskydistillerie, concertzaal, restaurant en cultuurcentrum. Dylan wil er ook zijn eigen tekeningen en sculpturen tentoonstellen. Bob Dylan is geboren in de staat Minnesota en raakte bekend met zijn muziek toen hij in New York woonde, maar de affiniteit met de stad Nashville, ook bekend als bakermat van heel wat countrymuziek, drukte de zanger dus al in april 1969 uit met het album 'Nashville Skyline'.  Mocht je niet helemaal bekend zijn met BLACK MIRRORS: sinds hun album ‘Look Into The Black Mirror’ verscheen in september 2018, speelde de Brusselse band zo'n 120 shows verspreid over 16 Europese landen, won het een DMA-award (RTBF) en speelden ze op talloze festivals, waaronder het internationaal gelauwerde showcasefestival Reeperbahn Music Festival in Hamburg. Na dit uitzonderlijk parcours kon een uitnodiging van het befaamde Eurosonic showcasefestival in Groningen dan ook niet uitblijven. De Brusselse rockband rond de erg charismatische zangeres Marcella Di Troia is duidelijk (niet enkel naar Belgische normen) bezig aan een straf parcours, en blijkbaar volgt er nog meer! Zo trok BLACK MIRRORS recent de “plug” uit enkele van hun albumsongs en herwerkten ze twee stevige rocknummers tot intens gevoelige ballads. In deze versies toont de band opnieuw over een uitzonderlijk en breed muzikaal talent te beschikken en de zangprestaties van Marcella kruipen genadeloos onder de huid! Anderhalf jaar na hun release show in Ancienne Belgique (maanden op voorhand uitverkocht) lijkt BLACK MIRRORS dus nog niet klaar met hun succesvolle debuutplaat! *Hun debuut ‘Look Into The Black Mirror’ kwam wereldwijd uit via Napalm Records (Smashing Pumpkins, Alter Bridge, Powerwolf,…) en PIAS België. Het album vol met opzwepende en groovende alternatieve Rock, met hier en daar wat vintage invloeden, kreeg internationaal lovende recensies en bleek een opvallend breed publiek aan te spreken. 15 januari 2020 spelen ze op ESNS en in januari/februari brengen ze twee Unplugged singles/video's uit. Het Brusselse viertal heeft de attitude, de vlammende rock, de hypnotiserende melodieën en de grooves om dit voor elkaar te boksen. Dat onderstreepten ze door de DMA prijs voor beste artiest ‘Rock & Alternative 2018’ mee naar huis te nemen.
Ugly Runner Evokes Sounds of The Stooges, Ty Segall & The Pixies With Debut EP “Romanticizer”9/1/2020  Ugly Runner is a 3-piece rock ‘n’ roll outfit from Asheville, North Carolina. As broad as the spectrum of rock ‘n’ roll itself, so are the influences of Ugly Runner, which range from California Punk to British Rhythm & Blues. Aiming to create timeless rock 'n' roll that dances on the edge of psychedelia, and invokes nostalgia from the first listen, the band entered the studio in May 2019 to record their debut EP, “Romanticizer,” at Sedgwick Studios in Flat Rock, NC. Working with engineer, Peter Brownlee, they tracked the 6-song EP and spent the remainder of the summer playing shows and preparing for the release of their debut EP. His classical and jazz training combined with his passion for computers and electronic synthesizers united the digital and analog worlds, creating some of the most forward-thinking music of the 1970s. Born in Brussels, Vandroogenbroeck earned numerous accolades as a young pianist and was touring Europe by the time he was a teenager. But as the musical and cultural explosion brought on by the '60s spread throughout the world, Vandroogenbroeck found himself drifting further outside of the mainstream to a place of exploration and experimentation in psychedelic music inspired by bands such as Tangerine Dream and Amon Duul II. He formed his own band, Brainticket, and released the highly regarded debut album Cottonwoodhill in 1971. Psychonaut followed the next year and the epic Celestial Ocean capped things off in 1973. These early albums along with the later period Brainticket recordings constitute some of the finest electronic psych music ever laid down. Vandroogenbroeck teamed with Los Angeles-based indie label Cleopatra Records to reissue his catalog of albums along with unreleased and rare live recordings for Cleopatra's Purple Pyramid imprint. He also revived Brainticket in 2015 with what will be their final album Past, Present & Future helped by the likes of UK Subs guitarist Nicky Garratt and German industrial artist Jürgen Engler of Die Krupps.  The Flyin’ A’s are a husband and wife duo based out of Austin, Texas. No Holds Barred is their fourth full length studio album. It has been recorded at MoonHouse Studios in the heart of South Austin produced by Chris Gage. Players on the album include Warren Hood on fiddle, Kym Warner (Green Cards and Robert Earl Keen) on mandolin, Glenn Fukunaga (Dixie Chicks) on electric bass, Josh Allen Flowers on stand up bass, Kevin Hall on drums, Andrea Magee (Beat Root Revival) on Bahram, Chris Gage (Jerry Jeff Walker) on dobro, piano and electric guitar and Stuart Adamson on Electric guitar and vocals, and Hilary Claire Adamson on vocals. The majority of the 9 original songs on this album were written high in a cabin nestled in the Colorado Rocky Mountain range at the YMCA of the Rockies. The other 4 songs are by songwriters that have had a major influence on Hilary Claire Adamson and Stuart Adamson including Townes Van Zandts, Billy Edd Wheeler, George Jones, Roger Miller, and Al Staehely (Spirit).

In 2019 vierde de Gentse zanger-gitarist zijn 75ste verjaardag, stond hij zestig jaar op de planken en bracht hij, onder impuls van Tiny Legs Tim, het goed onthaalde comeback-album ‘Blues Rebel’ uit (SMT-012, Sing My Title). Little Jimmy stond destijds ook mee aan de wieg van de Belpop.

Born in Detroit, a singer, songwriter and producer, Ms Chandler claimed Otis Williams of the Temptations as a close family friend while percussionist Eddie "Bongo" Brown -- a member of Motown Records' famed studio crew the Funk Brothers -- was her next-door neighbor. Inevitably therefore she was drawn to Motown where Chandler eventually met Jack Ashford, (known for his own percussion work with the Funk Brothers) and together they penned 'I'm Gone,' a 1966 single for singer Eddie Parker, before Lorraine signed to Ashford's Pied Piper production company. Her first single, Ashford and Mike Terry's 'What Can I Do,' appeared on Jo Armstead's Giant label in 1966, becoming a local hit. Lorraine recorded plenty more material for Pied Piper – most licensed to labels like RCA and Kapp while she also wrote numerous songs with her most famous possibly being Eddie Parker's 'Love You Baby', a huge Northern soul favorite. When Ashford relocated from Detroit to Los Angeles in 1976, Lorraine's career was put on hold till she was "rediscovered" by the Northern soul fraternity who took her to their collective heart. Many of her Pied Piper singles were reissued and she toured frequently. Most of her work can be easily found on a series of Jack Ashford/Pied Piper compilations issued by the UK's Ace/Kent label.  Bo Winberg, guitarist in the band The Spotnicks, is dead, Göteborgs-Posten writes. He passed away on Friday night, 80 years old.
Bo Winberg joined when The Spotnicks was formed in 1961, and the band quickly gained international attention. Along with bands such as The Shadows and The Ventures, they are seen as stylists in the instrumental rock music of the 1960s. More than 40 studio albums were available before The Spotnicks closed last year. In 2013, the band received the Gothenburg Spårvägar cultural award. - You are easily moved, we are in a good company if you say so. Just thank and receive. I don't know what else there is to say, if I were to tell the whole truth behind Spotnicks then I would be able to stand here for a week, Bo Winberg told GP in connection with the prize being awarded.  Concertorganisator Live Nation en Ticketmaster - Live Nation is aandeelhouder in Ticketmaster - vinden dat de prijzen van concert- en festivaltickets veel te laag zijn en de komende jaren naar alle waarschijnlijkheid flink zullen stijgen. Dat meldt Marketwatch.com op basis van gesprekken met mensen uit de directie van de bedrijven.
De afgelopen vijf jaar stegen de prijzen van concerttickets (van top 100 tours) al 23% en sinds 1996 zelfs 250%. Dit is flink meer dan de inflatie. Omdat dit soort tickets in de secondary ticketmarkt nog veel meer opbrengen, vindt Live Nation en Ticketmaster de huidige prijsstelling te laag. Joe Berchtold van Live Nation zegt tegen Marketwatch dat artiesten niet altijd doorhadden hoeveel geld er verdiend werd door tussenhandelaren. Nu ze zich dat beginnen te realiseren, komen ze erachter dat niet de fans, maar vooral de tussenhandelaar profiteert van hun lage prijsstelling. Hij verwacht dat artiesten meer geld gaan vragen en voor technische oplossingen gaan kiezen die het doorverkopen moeilijker maken. Volgens Berchtold lopen artiesten op dit moment meer dan 1,3 miljard dollar mis door secondaire tickethandelaren. Dit bedrag slaat alleen op Live Nation shows. Onder meer ticketveilingen, waarin fans tegen elkaar opbieden, zou dit bedrag lager moeten maken, schrijft festivalinfo.nl Live Nation werd 's werelds grootste concertpromotor toen het bedrijf Ticketmaster in 2010 opkocht. Vanuit de muziekindustrie klonken toen zorgen dat het bedrijf een monopolie op liveoptredens dreigde te krijgen. Vorige maand zegde Live Nation toe zich te zullen schikken met het Amerikaanse ministerie van Justitie. Dat onderzocht beschuldigingen dat Live Nation concertzalen in de VS onder druk zette om zaken te doen met dochterbedrijf Ticketmaster. In de schikking met de Amerikaanse justitie zou opgenomen zijn dat Live Nation een miljoen dollar per keer moet betalen dat het concertlocaties er toe beweegt Ticketmaster te gebruiken, schrijft de Financial Times.  De maand januari wordt in Brussel omgedoopt tot "Jazzuary". In de eerste maand van het jaar vinden er namelijk drie jazzfestivals plaats: het Brussels Jazz Festival, het River Jazz Festival en Djangofolllies. De festivals lopen tussen 8 en 25 januari.
Jazz is een vaste waarde die het hele jaar door weerklinkt in de hoofdstad, maar met drie jazzfestivals, goed voor 46 concerten op acht concertlocaties, is januari een hoogtepunt op de Brusselse jazzagenda. Het Brussels Jazz Festival loopt van 8 tot en met 18 januari in Flagey en zorgt opnieuw voor een mix tussen nieuw talent en gevestigde waarden. De talentvolle Brusselse drummer Antoine Pierre treedt op als 'artist in residence' en zal er drie projecten voorstellen, waaronder twee nieuwe creaties. Jazzzangeres Mélanie De Biasio krijgt de eer om het festival af te trappen met twee uitzonderlijke concerten. Het River Jazz Festival strijkt van 9 tot en met 25 januari neer in het Théâtre Marni, Jazz Station en Le Senghor. Enkele explosieve duo's zoals David Linx & Michel Hatzigeorgiou, ensembles als Rêve d'Eléphant Orchestra of de prestigieuze genodigden Sal La Rocca 4tet feat. Stéphane Belmondo treden er op. Ten slotte is er nog Djangofollies, dat van 14 tot en met 25 januari de Ancienne Belgique, Les Riches-Claires, Flagey, Jazz Station, Muziekpublique en de Kunsthumanoria inpalmt met zigeunerjazz. Op het programma staat onder meer het Kamao Quartet, begeleid door de Belg Tcha Limberger, ook bekend als de "koning van de zigeunermuziek". |
