Featuring drummer Brian Woodruff, pianist Oscar Perez and bassist Kuriko Tsugawa, this group mixes rhythmic acrobatics with an uncanny ability to swing through the Great American Songbook or dance delicately through Brazilian and Latin standards.” -brownstoner.com The OKB Trio was born at a jam session Woodruff ran at Blackbird’s in Astoria, Queens that gave him the privilege of playing with different musicians each week. On June 20th, 2010 he hit pay-dirt. He brought pianist Oscar Perez, bassist Kuriko Tsugawa, and himself together for the first time that Sunday and the chemistry was immediate. All three musicians arrived early and were set up and ready to go well before downbeat, so they made a toast, had a drink together, and proceeded to swing their butts off for the remainder of the evening. Woodruff explains “We didn’t program anything super-difficult, but there were a few simple originals and some standards you haven’t heard very often.” At the end of the gig, Tsugawa said “I always want to play with THIS trio,” and we all agreed. Woodruff and Perez talked about the difficulties they experienced in featuring their own playing while leading larger groups that play elaborately arranged originals, so they decided that OKB would play simpler material, so they could focus on the groove and expressing themselves more freely on their instruments. As Woodruff proudly boasts, “We always keep the ‘ing’ in the swing.” While they are dedicated to swinging, Perez and Woodruff do have a tendency to jump off of buildings and set. Perez, Tsugawa, and Woodruff are proud of two important firsts The Ing… represents: 1) The first music ever recorded at Chris Benham’s thriving new studio, Big Orange Sheep, built by their dear friends Mr. Benham, and Kevin Thomas, with assistance from many members of their musical community, including Perez, who helped choose the piano, Woodruff, who spent a day laying electrical wire, and Daisuke Abe, art director for this CD, a board member of the Queens Jazz OverGround , and Tsugawa’s husband. The studio was under construction as OKB was planning to record, but as they were pressuring Benham to open, the impending birth of Abe and Tsugawa’s daughter bought needed time. The trio started recording on March 5th, 2015, the very morning Big Orange Sheep was open for business! 2) The first recording for QJOG Records. Founded in 2012 by Amanda Monaco, Josh Deutsch, Mark Wade, and Brian Woodruff, the Queens Jazz OverGround grew largely out of the success of the Blackbird’s Session, where OKB was born. The trio is proud to have been an integral part of so many of the initial successes that helped put Queens on the jazz map. More than a piano trio, the OKB Trio considers their collective mindset, heartfelt kinship, and sense of community a cornerstone of their artistry. Nadat Nightwish-zangeres Floor Jansen en Pagan’s Mind-gitarist Jørn Viggo Lofstad in 2007 spontaan het podium deelden tijdens de 'All Star Jam' op het Progpower USA Festival, besloten ze om samen een album te maken waarin hun muzikale voorliefde voor ‘stripped down hardrock’ de rode draad zou vormen. In 2008 kenden ze elkaar nog nauwelijks, maar slaagden er toch in ze om in een mum van tijd het materiaal van een heel album te componeren. Vanwege overvolle agenda’s duurde het een poos voordat Floor en Jørn weer kans zagen om vervolg te geven aan hun muzikale idee. Tijdens Floors break in 2017 kwamen de twee echter weer bijeen en besloten om het album uit te brengen onder de naam Northward. "Jørn Viggo was positief over het project en we begonnen de algemene plannen te maken, bij herontmoeting in maart 2017 te Zweden om al het materiaal samen door te nemen om te zien of we nog steeds gelukkig waren met wat we hadden gecreëerd.” Herinnert Floor zich. Northwards stijl laat zich het beste omschrijven als sterk, compromisloos, euforisch en recht voor zijn raap, in de traditie van bands als Skunk Anansie, Foo Fighters en Alter Bridge - maar ook klassieke bands als Deep Purple en Led Zeppelin. Met de hulp van producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat etc.) smeedden ze een rauwe diamant samengesteld uit zware riffs en Floor's onvergelijkbare stem, vrij van invloeden van de belangrijkste bands van de muzikanten. En hoewel de liedjes oorspronkelijk in 2008 waren geschreven, voelden ze zich net zo fris en levend tijdens een tweede luistersessie, net als op de allereerste dag van hun oprichting. Floor: “De muziek is melodieus, maar ook in je gezicht en kick assrock. Coole riffs, goede melodieën, smaakvolle arrangementen. We zouden het gewoon 'Good Music' willen noemen. We wilden een basic rock-sound met drums, bas, gitaar en zang. Niet de zware lagen toetsenborden, koren etc."
Naast Floor Jansen and Jørn Viggo Lofstad zijn de overige muzikanten die op Northwards album participeren zijn Morty Black (TNT) op bas; Django Nilsen en Stian Kristoffersen (Pagan's Mind) op drums; Floors zus Irene; en Ronny Tegner van Pagan's Mind als gastmuzikanten. Dit jaar staat Northward klaar om los te breken! De releasedatum van hun debuutalbum, bij Nuclear Blast, wordt binnenkort onthuld. Cygnus hecht veel aandacht aan het melodische en het tekstuele, met een grote liefde voor muziek. Die passie merk je meteen wanneer je de ‘The First Hour’ EP beluistert. Er wordt meteen krachtig maar melodisch tewerk gegaan op hoog niveau met soleer partijen om de vingers bij af te likken. De cleane zang van Frank klinkt krachtig en overtuigend. Er is ook plaats voor de nodige dynamiek die de composities alle eer aandoet. Cygnus is progmetal van eigen bodem waar we zeker nog van zullen horen! Cygnus werd in 2015 opgericht door ex-Omega X leden Erik Callaerts en bassist Benny Vercammen en speelden daarnaast ook samen in tal van andere bands met meestal een heavy en progressieve inslag. Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash is gearing up for its 50th anniversary on the heels of a limited-edition deluxe 30-disc box set, “Wishbone Ash: The Vintage Years,” available April 2018 through Madfish Records while supplies last. True road warriors, each year these British rock legends log around 30,000 miles, roughly equivalent to circumnavigating the earth. “We are breaking with our usual U.S. tour schedule and hitting the road early in 2018 to take in some cities that we haven’t been to for quite some time,” says founding member Andy Powell (guitar/lead vocals). “The tour will be heavy on Southern dates like North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and then into Texas, Arizona and, finally, California.” In the fall, the band will return to North America for some Canadian shows. “Everyone is rested and fighting fit, and looking forward to introducing new audiences to wunderkind Mark Abrahams on guitar, while hopefully surprising folks with some tunes from the vaults,” Powell says. Abrahams, who replaced 12-year veteran Muddy Manninen last summer, will be trading licks with Powell; he’s already been earning rave reviews from fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Longtime rhythm section Bob Skeat on bass and Joe Crabtree on drums continue to provide the solid groove that is their hallmark. Through the years the band has delved into various musical genres, from folk, blues and jazz to pedal-to-the-metal rock and electronica. Whatever the style, Wishbone Ash’s hallmark is the distinctive twin-melodic lead guitar interplay that has influenced such bands as Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron Maiden and, more recently, Opeth. “The band basically lives together year-round on the road, so we have a very strong level of communication that translates in our performances and recordings,” says Powell. “We’ve come to an era where the industry has to pigeonhole a band as Classic Rock, Prog Rock, Heritage Rock and so on. The truth is that we have always kept our options open and always relied on the musicianship of the players to lead the way. Ted Nash – alto sax, clarinet, flute, piccolo Warren Wolf – vibraphone Gary Versace – piano Rufus Reid – bass Matt Wilson – drums Two-time Grammy–winning composer and saxophonist Ted Nash releases his first live recording in over 25 years. Known for his highly-acclaimed works (Presidential Suite, Chakra, Portrait in Seven Shades) this much anticipated release provides an opportunity for Nash to share his improvisational side. His inspired solos are impassioned and interactive. On this album he finds new areas of expression that will excite and move you. These three nights at Dizzy’s were electric for me. I think you’ll hear in it the combination of great players, with history letting loose on music that has grown with me over the course of my career. On this album we share not just a night of music but the history of collaboration. It was a wonderful opportunity to make music again with many of my favorite musicians. I have known Rufus Reid since I was 24, when we recorded an album featuring my mother and father (which never was released). Rufus always plays with tremendous instinct and flexibility and brings decades of experience to the music. Rufus appeared on my Mancini Project album (Palmetto). I first met Matt Wilson when I was 18 and he 14, when I came to Rock Island, Illinois to play with Louie Bellson’s quartet. Of course I had no idea the skinny teenager I met that night would become one of jazz’s greatest contributors, appearing on more than 250 recordings. Matt has played on several of my albums, including Sidewalk Meeting, Still Evolved, La Espada de la Noche, In the Loop, and The Mancini Project. This is the second time Warren Wolf and I have played in a quintet at Dizzy’s together. He is one of the most consistently killing vibraphonists I have heard; at once fiery and cool. He is also one of the most melodic players – on any instrument. I have always had a connection with the vibes, as my jazz teacher was the great vibraphonist Charlie Shoemake, with whom I also played my first small band gigs, at the long-gone Donte’s in Los Angeles. I have known Gary Versace for years, hearing him with many great ensembles, and have always wanted the chance to play in a small group with him. I got that chance, and the experience is something I will never forget. The moments he found on Emily, for example (which we played as a clarinet and piano duo) were rich, inspiring and truly original. I feel Gary is on the cusp of being acknowledged as one of piano’s superstars. This performance was also a chance to revisit a couple original compositions in an entirely new context, and re-explore music by some of my favorite composers: Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, Johnny Mandel, and Henry Mancini. Blues Peer Alston, who was lead singer for the influential 60s girl group The Crystals, passed away on February 16 after contracting the flu, her daughter Donielle Prophete revealed today.
Alston, who has now become one of 200 from North Carolina, to die from the flu this season, had spent more than two weeks in intensive care at a hospital in Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer reported. The Crystals were among the others who helped fuel the rise of girl bands in the 1960s. They became renowned for their work with producer Phil Spector, helping him create the studio production technique, Wall of Sound. The technique allowed producers to gain a full sound on music recordings, making two or three instrumentalists play the same parts to generate a fuller tone on songs. US singer Darlene Love expressed her grief on Facebook. She wrote: "Very said to hear that Barbara Alston from the Crystals passed away. May she rest in peace!" Alston was buried on Friday at A.E Grier and Sons Chapel in Charlotte at 1pm. Fellow Crystals member, Dee Dee Kennibrew, was scheduled to speak at the ceremony. Eddy was a member of the pioneering Liverpool band, who scored massive hits with the likes of 'You To Me Are Everything' and 'Can You Feel the Force' in the 1970s.
Friend Simon Sheridan confirmed that he had died suddenly in Australia. Amoo was previously a member of the band The Chants in the 1960s, but later joined his younger brother Chris in The Real Thing. They also had hits with 'Can't Get By Without You' and 'Children of the Ghetto', which has been covered by artists including Philip Bailey and Mary J Blige. Sheridan has been making a documentary about the group, and said that Amoo's death was "a complete shock". He said: "These were four working class boys from a tough neighbourhood, from Toxteth, and they completely changed the face of British music in 1976." A statement from the band said: "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our brother and inspiration, Eddy Amoo. "Eddy was a showman, a songwriter, and a legend in British music." De zeventiende editie van het BSF vindt plaats van 14 tot 18 augustus. Dat het verdorie een evenement wordt: na anderhalf jaar stilte keert dEUS deze zomer langs de grote poort terug, en op 17 augustus brengt Tom Barman voor deze feestelijke gelegenheid niet alleen een paar handenvol onvervalste classics mee, maar ook een gloednieuwe gitarist. Bruno De Groote heeft de taak op zich genomen om de onvervangbare Mauro te vervangen, en hij is misschien wel de enige die deze taak ook écht tot een goed einde kan brengen. En kijk : goed nieuws komt nooit alleen, want ook Arsenal -één van onze andere favoriete Belgische bands- verbreekt een lange stilte. Aan het roer van de groep staan nog steeds John Roan en Hendrik Willemyns, twee rusteloze artiesten die de records aan elkaar haken als waren het kralen van een halssnoer. Twee jaar geleden tekenden ze nog voor 4 (vier!) uitverkochte concerten in de Ancienne Belgique, en op het BSF komen ze In The Rush Of Shaking Shoulders voorstellen, hun zesde plaat die half april in de winkel moet liggen. Daar kan je intussen wél al The Thread That Keeps Us vinden, de briljante nieuwe plaat van Calexico, de Amerikaanse band uit Tucson, Arizona die als geen ander het geluid van de zomer in de vingers heeft. Hoeven we daar nog aan toe te voegen dat Joey Burns en John Convertino al een boon voor België hebben sinds ze hier voor het eerst kwamen optreden. Twintig jaar later is de liefde nog altijd even wederzijds. Fans van Jasper Steverlinck hebben geduld moeten oefenen, maar veertien jaar na Songs Of Innocence heeft de voomalige frontman van Arid eindelijk een nieuwe cd klaar ? Wij hebben Night Prayer al gehoord, en durven het zonder blikken of blozen één van de cd’s van 2018 noemen. Ook live kiest hij voor de meest uitgepuurde vorm : stem, gitaar en piano. Maar dat is ruim voldoende. Kippenvel en krop in de keel verzekerd! Met Sonnfjord halen we één van de allerbeste bands die Brussel momenteel te bieden heeft naar ons festival. De naam klinkt wat frisjes, maar de warme stem van frontvrouw Maria-Laetitia Materne heeft alles in huis om de temperatuur meteen weer de hoogte in te stuwen. De electropopsingles Dust And Shapes en Lights lieten al een sterke indruk na, en op 20 april verschijnt er nieuwe ep waarvan we nu al weten dat u ‘m goed gaat vinden. En nu we toch al op de dansvloer staan: ook To Die For - het project van Luca Pecorao- wordt voortgestuwd door bruisende electrobeats, die, getuige singles als Beautiful en Never Met You, niemand onbewogen kunnen laten. Een rijzende ster, die gezien zijn internationaal appeal straks vast ook een reizende ster zal worden. King Child gooit het over een andere boeg. Deze nieuwe liefdesbaby van zanger Quentin Hoogaert en multi-instrumentalist Jean Prat werd verwekt tussen Lyon en Bruxelles. Vorige herfst brachten de twee met Meredith een eerste plaat uit waarop ze electronica kruisen met de indiegitaren van Coldplay en Radiohead. Als je weet dat de leden van Soviet Suprem luisteren naar namen als Sylvester Staline, John Lénine en DJ Croute Chef, is het duidelijk dat dit het soort concert wordt waar je na afloop met een kamerbrede glimlach weer buiten stapt. De teksten zijn Frans, maar de beats komen zo uit de Balkan, en samen met nog wat electronica erbij komen ze uit bij een geheel dat op papier nooit zou kunnen werken, maar live toch indruk maakt. Met andere woorden : hoog tijd voor wat glasnost op het Brussels Summer Festival. Nog nieuw: DBFC, een muzikale ontmoeting tussen de Bordelais Bertrand Lacombe en de uit Manchester afkomstige David Shawa. Samen blazen ze de cold wave uit de jaren tachtig weer nieuw leven in, maar wél met hedendaagse zuurstof. General Elektriks –de band rond creatieve spil Hervé Salters kookt dan weer een potje met ingrediënten als funk, hiphop en electro. Eenmaal op smaak krijg je Carry No Ghosts, een plaat waar fijnproevers van de meest kieskeurige soort duimen en vingers bij af zullen likken. En omdat we in elk genre énkel voor het beste gaan, zijn we maar blij dat we ook het Parijse duo Ofenbach hebben kunnen strikken. César Laurent de Rummel en Dorian Lauduique kruisen pop met deep house alsof die stijlen voor elkaar geboren waren. Geen wonder dat ook de Californische soulster Nick Waterhouse maar wat graag met hen in zee ging voor ‘Katchi’, een nummer dat centimeters diep in ons geheugen staat gegrift. Therapie Taxi stellen hun hybride pop voor op 14 augustus. Momenteel staan ze in de Ultratop met Sale Hit, een nummer waarvoor ze nationale trots Romeo Elvis (ook op de affiche met Le Motel) wisten te strikken voor een samenwerking. Om de nummers mee te vervolmaken vond RAMONA Naima Joris ( ex-Isbells) , Hanne Torfs ( School is Cool ), Anke Verslype ( Roxy Horse ) en Juno Kerstens ( Mira, Ponies ), waarvan ze met de laatste drie haar vaste groep vormt. RAMONA werd geboren in Nederland in een klein dorp dat niemand kent. Als puber liep ze van huis weg om in Amsterdam in te trekken bij - haar ouders grootste nachtmerrie - een 51 jarige kunstenaar. Hier leerde ze een hele reeks oude klassiekers kennen ( o.a Randy Newman, Chet Baker, The Beatles.. ) . Op de Toneelacademie in Maastricht werd ze als te ‘anarchistisch’ door verwezen naar de Kleinkunst afdeling van Studio Herman Teirlinck. Antwerpen heeft haar hart veroverd en de opleiding heeft een liefde voor Kurt Weill meegegeven die ook, voor de goede luisteraar, in haar nummers terug te horen valt, evenals invloeden van Joni Mitchell, CocoRosie en Feist. Sade will break an eight-year silence with a new track for the upcoming film A Wrinkle In Time. The movie, based on the classic Madeleine L'Engle novel, was directed by Ava DuVernay, who took to Twitter to reveal Sade's involvement. "I never thought she'd say yes," DuVernay says, "But asked anyway." (Read the full tweet below.) The song is called "Flower Of The Universe," and according to Entertainment Weekly, it's also been remixed by Chicago hip-hop producer No I.D. Sade and her band's last studio album, Soldier Of Love, came out in 2010. The consummate performer, entertainer, best dressed and busiest guitarist in the business, Nick Colionne, sets a never before achieved standard on the Billboard chart scoring 5 consecutive #1 singles, all from the same record “The Journey”. It’s monumental for the smooth jazz chart and in fact we are not sure if it’s happened before in any genre. De Suikerrock zaterdag zag er al indrukwekkend met de aankondiging van Alanis Morissette en Goo Goo Dolls, vandaag doen we er een schepje (suiker) bovenop: Van suiker krijg je een flinke energiestoot toch? Wel, onze volgende aankondiging weet alles van energieke performances. Anouk mag helemaal los op het Suikerrock podium deze zomer. De Nederlandse raast als een poltergeist over podia en stuurt om de paar minuten een wervelwindje de Tiense kasseien op. Maar het kan ook ingetogen, Anouk is puur sentiment met zestien albums op zak en een trits hits die u allemaal kan meezingen. Haar songs vergeet je niet, denk even aan 'R U Kiddin' Me', 'Nobody's wife', 'Girl', 'Lost' etc... Laat jezelf lekker dwalen door een handvol muziekgenres, want Anouk heeft weinig met één enkele stijl: ze heeft een master in alternative rock, post/grunge, r&b, soul en alles wat daartussen past. Ze speelt ze allemaal met evenveel kracht en verve. Ze begon ooit in een kroegje in haar geboortestad Den Haag, en explodeerde heel snel tot Nederlands grootste rock-icoon. Geen podium in de Benelux dat ze niet kent, al zijn het de laatste jaren enkel nog de heel grote podia , en deze zomer dus dat van Suikerrock op zaterdag 28 juli! Diezelfde zaterdag gooien we nog een dijk van een band voor je voeten. De Britse White Lies: Het is een uitdaging om een mindere song van de band te ontdekken. Van debuut 'To lose my life' tot het recente 'Friends' vulden ze ieder album met alleen maar songparels. 'Farewell to the fairground' staat je zeker nog voor de geest. Hun grootste 'Bigger than us' stuurt zelfs nu nog golven van 'kiekenvel' door deze contreien.
White Lies situeert zich genre gewijs tussen Indie en post punk in, maar vult de dingen met een geheel eigen stijl in, die je in geen enkele andere band herkent. De typische melancholische stem van Harry McVeigh gijzelt je het hele optreden en laat je uren, wat zeggen we dagen later nog niet helemaal los. White Lies is live best een intensieve ervaring, dat mochten we de voorbije jaren al meermaals ondervinden in de AB, Lotto Arena en op Rock Werchter. Deze zomer staan ze op Suikerrock waarbij uw rillingen tot aan de Kerstvakantie nog voelbaar zullen zijn! It started sometime after World War 11 – in the late 1940's. A convoy of British Special Services trucks had been dispatched to RAF Middlewych, their cargo - 10 tonnes of experimental solvent liquid. Sticky and deadly. The mission – to drop the toxic liquid over Germany and finish the job of carving up Europe for good. The trucks never made it to their airfield destination, coming off the road – most probably helped by saboteurs – some five miles out of London. Just off the Westway, in the motorway sidings, you can see a small sign. Actually you probably can't see the sign as it is the size of a child's fingernail clipping. The sign says 'Glue Town.' The name of a village. There is little or no documentation of Glue Town. You will not find any information about it on the 21st Century internet. Glue Town is a rural settlement born out of mutation. Of the estimated 500 or so dwellers, no one is thought to be over 2 ½ inches tall. The citizens of Glue Town exist on a diet of solvent abuse and perpetual horniness. The residents only leave to carry out daring night -time 'glue raids' on Shepherds Bush newsagent shops. On a tiny screen in the town centre, an old Betamax cassette of 'Michael Bentine's Pottytime' plays on a loop all day and all night. The reduced size villagers go about their daily business pondering whether the lessons of Pottytime can show them a way out of their drudge lives of sexual abandonment and human sacrifice. This 12” vinyl edition is strictly limited to just three hundred copies worldwide. 'I Sometimes Dream Of Glue' is also available on CD and digital formats. Mascot Records/Mascot Label Group Mascot Records are thrilled to announce the new album ‘Thrust’ by DeWolff, which will be released on 4th May 2018 DeWolff formed in the Netherlands’ Deep South of Geleen, when they were barely teenagers in 2007 by brothers’ Pablo (singer/guitarist) and Luka van de Poel(Drums) and Hammond organist Robin Piso. Named after Harvey Keitel’s character, Winston Wolfe, in Pulp Fiction, their luscious and expansive neo-psychedelia saw them burst out of the city. They have released 5 studio albums previously, all have catapulted them up the charts in their homeland. Whilst still in their teens they played the prestigious Paradiso in Amsterdam and took to the mainstage at PinkPop Festival in front of 10,000 fans, relentless touring followed, earmarking them as a formidable live act. Since then they’ve played to 30,000 at Lowlands Festival, 15,000 at Sziget, as well as Reeperbahn, Rockpalast, Rock Oz Arenas and supported The Black Keys, Blues Pills, Ten Years After and Deep Purple. They’ve played Castle’s throughout Europe, been invited to perform at a Russian millionaire’s birthday party in Berlin, they had bodyguards for a show on a Moscow rooftop and at a Biker festival just outside the city, they came face to face with unexpected pyrotechnics, nudity and watched fire spread across the stage during their set. Deep Purple’s Roger Glover, watched them from the side of the stage and told them “I love your band man, it sounds awesome.’” They jammed with Ten Years After live on stage and got told Woodstock stories from Ric Lee and also count Seasick Steve as a fan. Steve was asleep in his bus at a festival they were playing at and he was dreaming that he was watching The Allman Brothers live in ’72. Only, he woke up and realised he wasn’t in a dream “Right after we came off stage he came up to tell us ‘that was amazing guys, I thought I heard The Allman Brothers playing in my dream but it was you,’” remembers Pablo. They crossed paths again at Rock Oz Arenes in Switzerland in 2016 where Steve introduced the band to their idol Robert Plant. “We found out Robert Plant was headlining it. Robert fucking Plant, the golden god. He is one of my biggest heroes ever,” says Pablo. Security wouldn’t let them backstage until Seasick Steve said, “‘these are my friends, they have to be in the back stage area’ and we got to talk to Robert Plant. I cried after, but not during fortunately.” Now based in Utrecht they have their own analogue ‘Electrosaurous Sound’ studio, which is tucked away in a wharf on the scenic Old Canal of the city, the bunker is full of recording equipment, decorated with antique lampshades, Persian rugs and stuffed animals. This is where they recorded and self-produced ‘Thrust’ last summer. Away from their traditional ‘vintage’ sound, the album is full of lots of firsts for the band; they tackle contemporary social and political issues on ‘Deceit & Woo’ which was written on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration and they explore the political climate closer to home on the opening track ‘Big Talk’ which is targeted swipe at the Dutch far-right politician and ‘Dutch Trump’, Geert Wilders. Now in their mid-twenties, they’ve opened themselves up completely to be creatively free, Pablo explains “We didn’t really start writing this record with a concept in mind, we just started writing and saw where it took us.” ‘California Burning’ attacks todays loud mouth society, they tackle gambling on ‘Tragedy, Not Today’, dark undertones on ‘Swain’ and they approach the god of death on ‘Tombstone Child’. ‘Outta Step and Ill at Ease’ is another first for the band. “I used to be really bad at when I had a strong emotion, either I was really happy or really sad to write a song about it in that moment,” Pablo says. “This is the first song I ever wrote when I was feeling super down and lonely.” In 2017, the band celebrated their 10th Anniversary in fine style as they headlined their own DeWolfest to 3,500 fans with support from amongst others, Wolf People and Little Barrie. “Its super weird,” says Pablo talking about it. “It feels like 3 years or something, it’s really cool that such a lot of people came to this festival, it felt super rewarding. Sometimes it feels, is this going to last? Is it going to fade? But, we’ve been together now for 10 years and this isn’t going to fade and people believe in what we stand for and respect and appreciate that. It feels like we finally made it.” Ten years of being a band and wanting to produce your greatest record to date has made ‘Thrust’, a full representation of the DeWolff live experience incorporated with the in the studio experimentation. It represents the sound of rock ‘n’ roll in 2018; equal doses of anger, frustration, emotion and at times disillusion with the state of the world today and all delivered in a hooky and gloriously epic fashion. Amid her current single Morgan climbing the charts, country artist Julia Capogrossi has just been named the official spokesperson for Global Children’s Rescue (GCR), a non-profit that works to put a stop to human trafficking. Capogrossi jumped at the chance to work with them, citing human trafficking as an issue close to her heart.
In describing the announcement, Capogrossi said, “This is so important to me, and something that people aren’t talking about enough. People think ‘this could never happen to me, this could never happen to my children,’ but it can, it is, and it’s happening every day. I think people need to be aware of potential threatening situations as it could mean the difference between life and death.” Global Children’s Rescue focuses on missing children and human trafficked victims as well as human trafficking prevention. In working with them, she hopes to bring more awareness to this issue, as well as bringing awareness and support in their pursuit of ending human trafficking in our local communities. Met inbreng van ‘modern hues of jazz, classical, chamber and experimental rock music’ brachten ze hun Ierse folk muziek naar een zeldzaam hoog niveau, wisten ze een breed publiek te bereiken en over de hele wereld speelden ze in de meest voorname theaters. Vanaf voorjaar 2012 was het al de traditie om jaarlijks in Ierland’s National Concert Hall in Dublin te spelen. Tot nu toe speelden ze er 17 keer, en alle concerten waren stijf uitverkocht.
