Het Nederlands- New Zeelands Trio  MY BABY blijft één van de meest interessante én strafste live-bands van het moment. Met hun unieke mix van rootsy hypnotische dansmuziek spelen ze doorlopend Europa plat. Hun sound  is een symbiose van  gospel, blues, oude folk met rauwe seventies funk, Afrikaanse woestijn blues, Marokkaanse gnawa, Indische raga en een dosis EDM. En dat allemaal uitsluitend gespeeld op gitaren en drums zonder gebruik van computers of samples. Voorgaande albums “Shamanaid” (2015) en “Prehistoric Rhythm”(2017) en bijbehorende singles deden het ook erg goed in België. De band speelde honderden shows in heel Europa, Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland en bracht op 5 oktober haar bekroonde vierde album “Mounaiki – By the Bright of Night” uit.

British Columbia’s husky-voiced award-winning bluesman Harpdog Brown is set to release his anticipated new album, For Love & Money, on April 26th.  Produced by JUNO Award winner Steve Dawson, the triple Maple Blues Award winner takes Chicago blues down to New Orleans for a unique and vibrant sound, tinted with shades of Louis Jordan, Sonny Boy Williamson, Louis Armstrong, and the greats of Chess and Sun Records.
 
Recorded at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, For Love & Money is a striking showcase of Brown’s talent and versatility as a singer and harmonica player throughout the 13 tracks. A mix of originals and well-crafted covers, Brown takes the listener on an aural road trip through his interpretations of the historical sounds of classic American blues and jazz, with a vintage sound, new classics, modern material and a killer new band.

When asked about Harpdog’s new material, producer Steve Dawson remarked, “This is totally unique material. Where he’s drawing from is this era of ‘40s and ‘50s jump blues mixed with some Chicago meets NOLA and the harp stuff is reminiscent of ‘50s Sonny Boy-era blues…you can’t really put your finger on it. And then the horn aspect of it is totally unique. I can’t really think of another band to compare that to. For Love & Money is less guitar driven than Brown’s previous releases, and is heavier on piano and horns, keeping with the NOLA vibe.”
 
A larger than life character, Harpdog Brown (his legal name) recently discovered that he has familial New Orleans roots and, feels deeply connected to the New Orleans blues sound and the historical importance of the music. He has been dubbed a “Blues Evangelist” - taking his messages and songs to audiences across North America and beyond for nearly four decades. “I speak the blues like it's the truth, and it is,” he was recently quoted. “I do feel like I'm a servant of the people. A missionary if you will. Music can heal people if they pay attention to the messages in these songs.”
 
Joining Brown on the album is a varied cast of some of the finest musicians on the circuit today. The new direction of the band is an inspiring one with a new, younger generation of musicians joining in on the journey with William Joseph Abbott on the clarinet and alto sax and Skye Lambourne on trombone.  The seasoned musicians on the album include Dave Webb on piano & Hammond B3, Robert (Bob) Vail Grant on drums, Jerry Cook on baritone and tenor sax, Jeremy Holmes on bass, and special guest Steve Dawson on guitars.
 
As Harpdog states, “This is one damn fine album, depicting where I am in my life and musical career. The title, For Love & Money, sums it all up well. After all, that’s what it’s all about. And in that order. We should all know that money is useless without love.”
 

​Op zaterdag 6 juli maakt ROCK ZOTTEGEM zich op voor de broeierige gitzwarte gitaarsongs van Interpol. De Amerikaanse band werd in 1998 opgericht in New York. In 2004 werd Interpol door Robert Smith himself uitverkoren om het voorprogramma van The Cure te spelen, in 2005 volgden  U2 en Coldplay. Met het album ‘Turn on the Bright Lights’ (2002) gaf de underground rockscene zich over aan de duistere, eigenzinnige rifs. Zes albums later klinkt Interpol nog steeds als Interpol en dat is een groot compliment.

Happy! Happy! Happy! Dat wordt ongetwijfeld uw state of mind na het optreden van Walk Off The Earth op zaterdag 6 juli op Zottegemse festivalbodem. Walk Off The Earth was zowat de grootste YouTube-sensatie van 2012. Met zijn vijven speelde deze Canadese groep tegelijk op eenzelfde gitaar terwijl ze Gotye’s ‘Somebody that I used to know’ naar hun handen zetten...

Hou jullie vast! Op vrijdag 5 juli komt de Amerikaanse folkpunkband Flogging Molly de Crazy Main op ROCK ZOTTEGEM in vuur en vlam zetten. Al meer dan 20 jaar zijn ze actief, de punkers van Flogging Molly...

After spending the last six years making rock albums, Todd Snider is going back to folk. Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 was recorded at Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, TN. Snider wrote the set of songs and played all the instruments on the record, displaying his growth as a musician and vocalist. Of the five songs on which Snider serves up his humorous brand of socio-political commentary, three are performed in the talking blues style. He even had his friends, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, contribute backing vocals on a few of the tracks. The album was recorded at Johnny Cash's studio, using Johnny Cash's favorite century-old Martin guitar.

If Snider is anything, he is a true artist, and he reminds us of that on Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3. At a point in time when the world has never been more complicated and confusing, with people getting louder and louder, Snider did a 180, went back to his roots as a folksinger, to a simpler, quieter form of expression; and it might be what the world is waiting to hear; a man, his guitar, and the truth.

Sjock, het best bewaarde geheim der Europese festivals
Sjock, het oudste nog bestaande alternatieve én onafhankelijke festival van België viert komend jaar zijn 44e verjaardag en is al sinds jaar en dag een initiatief van de vrijwilligers van Jeugdhuis ’t Hoekske in Gierle. Het is de oervader van festivals als Groezrock, Jera On Air, Speedfest,  en ScumBash. In al die jaren tijd is het evenement uitgegroeid tot een uniek festival, waar Rock met de grote R centraal staat. Sjock scheidt zich af van de mainstream-waanzin en kiest bewust voor rock-‘n ‘-roll in de originele betekenis van het begrip.Vandaag de dag is Sjock dé ontmoetingsplaats voor rockabilly’s, psychobilly’s, hillbilly’s maar ook voor vetkuiven, tattoos, erotiserende netkousen, dito decolletés en voor iedereen die rock-‘n ‘-roll een warm hart toe draagt.

Een nieuw evenement is geboren !  In samenwerking met Wild Records, een klein Indie platenlabel uit Los Angeles (USA), organiseert Grasshopper Int. Vzw op 1 en 2 maart 2019 nieuw 2-daags evenement in Turnhout.
 
Tijdens het ‘Wildest Weekender’ stelt het Wild Records label ongeveer 21 bands voor die vanuit alle windstreken van onze aardbol naar de Vlaamse hoofdstad van de rock ’n roll komen. Sinds Reb Kennedy, een uitgeweken Ier, in 2001 het label oprichtte bonden meer dan 50 bands zich aan het label.  
 
We starten het weekend op vrijdagavond 1 maart voor de pré-party in jeugdclub Wollewei waar reeds 4 bands het podium zullen betreden : Rampage (UK), Two Timers (USA), Sparks Boys (RUS), Pachuco Jose (USA). Enkele Wild DJ’s en gast muzikanten vervolledigen de avond.
 
Zaterdag 2 maart wordt een lange dag waar niet minder dan 17 bands het podium van de Kuub (de Warande) zullen betreden, de eerste band start al om 14.30u ! 
 
Om deze ‘showcase’ vlot te laten verlopen spelen de bands maximaal 30 minuten met een korte break, waarna de volgende bands reeds het podium zal betreden, zo krijg je bijna één langgerekt optreden van 14.30u ’s middags tot 3u ’s nachts, slechts onderbroken door een paar korte DJ sets.
 
In de ‘terraszaal’ op de 1st verdieping van de kuub zal de documentaire ‘Los Wild Ones’ (2013, 1u 16min) te zien zijn, een film over het leven en toewijding van Reb Kenndy. (zie engelstalige quote hieronder)
 
There’s no denying the total commitment Los Angeles-based indie record label owner Reb Kennedy has to the Latino rockabilly musicians he takes under his wing. In the documentary Los Wild Ones, it’s Kennedy who is on the cinematic main stage for most of the picture as director Elise Salomon fashions an interesting character study around a man who has given his life to the bands he manages. Sure, he uses a little tough love and his controlling nature might alienate and hinder some acts, but the reality of this cutthroat industry as shared by the featured musicians is refreshing. Thematically speaking, Salomon tackles a few too many issues, which keeps the film from finding a real emotional hook, but when she turns her camera on Kennedy and some of the stronger personalities, there’s plenty—including the music—to love.

De Australische rockband Wolfmother rond frontman en gitarist Andrew Stockdale voegt een Belgische datum toe aan hun Europese tournee komende zomer. Op dinsdag 2 juli tekent het OLT Rivierenhof in Antwerpen present voor een avond vol energetische en psychedelische hard- en stonerrock! De ticketverkoop start morgen, woensdag 27 februari, om 12u30.
 
De rockformatie debuteerde in 2005 met een gelijknamig album dat een ware schokgolf doorheen het muzieklandschap veroorzaakte. De iconische plaat waarvan inmiddels anderhalf miljoen exemplaren verkocht zijn, werd door Rolling Stone als één van de beste platen van dat jaar genoemd. Single “Woman” bleek zulke dijk van een schijf te zijn dat de Grammy voor “Best Hard Rock Performance” meer dan verdiend was. Het laatste Wolfmother-album ‘Victorious’ is inmiddels alweer drie jaar oud, maar Stockdale bracht in 2018 nog een tweede soloalbum ‘Slipstream’ uit, waarvan hij met Wolfmother ook nummers speelt. Old school rock ’n roll geïnspireerd door Led Zeppelin en Black Sabbath in het mooiste outdoor theater van het land? Let's rawk op 2 juli!

Het eclectische muziekgezelschap Pink Martini is opgericht door pianist Thomas Lauderdale (Portland, Oregon) in 1994. Ondertussen is het 'kleine orkest’ uitgegroeid tot een band van 13 muzikanten die de meest uiteenlopende talen en muziekstijlen beheersen. Tijdens een concert van hen waan je je achtereenvolgens in een sambaparade in Rio, een Cubaans café, een Frans theater uit de jaren dertig, een Italiaans herenhuis of in Japan. Er wordt gezongen in maar liefst vijftien talen, met een doorleefde muzikale begeleiding die schippert tussen klassiek, jazz, swing en pop.
Met de single Sympathique - Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler braken ze een achttal jaar geleden door in Frankrijk. De Fransen weten zelfs het Amerikaanse accent te appreciëren waarin Pink Martini zijn Franstalige nummers zingt. In Canada, Turkije, Griekenland en Frankrijk ontvangt het collectief de ene gouden plaat na de andere en werkten ze op hun albums samen met Rufus Wainwright, Philippe Katerine en Gus Van Sant. Hun muziek wordt ook vaak gebruikt in tv-series als The Sopranos of Westwing. Stilaan valt ook het Europese vasteland voor de vrolijke nummers van dit bonte gezelschap. Vorig jaar speelden ze nog in een uitverkochte Ancienne Belgique, dit jaar maken ze er wederom een hartverwarmende zomeravond van.

Cultuurcentrum De Kern in Wilrijk stelt een tweede seizoen van Café Canapé-concerten voor. Met Steven Troch Band, Zandland en The LVE is het programma opnieuw gevarieerd, van blues over jazz en kleinkunst tot indiepop.
 
Café Canapé geeft een forum aan muziekgroepen die minder aan bod komen in de typische schouwburgprogrammatie. Deze concertreeks vindt plaats in de artiestenfoyer van De Kern, die speciaal voor Café Canapé wordt opengesteld voor het publiek. Daarnaast zet De Kern ook in op speelkansen bieden aan nieuw talent. De voorprogramma’s lopen in samenwerking met vi.be, de talentenbank van Poppunt.
 
16 maart: Steven Troch Band
Mondharmonicavirtuoos Steven Troch behoort tot de Europese bluestop. Zijn nieuwe groep, simpelweg Steven Troch Band, brengt rootsmuziek vanuit een klassiek uitgangspunt maar met een originele twist.

Zandland combineert opwindende jazz met mijmerende Nederlandstalige teksten van de hand van Niels Boutsen (Stoomboot). De verhalen nemen je mee op een poëtische reis langs zoute stranden.

The LVE bouwt met hun nieuwe EP verder aan een repertoire van ‘sad songs in every key’. Gebroken harten en dito dromen vormen de rode draad. Mooi en droevig tegelijkertijd, verpakt in groove en melancholie met mooie samenzang.

Latin alternative music met een onstilbare liefde voor muziek.
Je eigen weg banen en verbonden blijven met je roots; dat is wat de Belgisch-Peruviaanse artiest David Méndez Yépez drijft om zijn pen en gitaar op te nemen. Dankzij Davids warme ontmoeting met Thibault Quinet, ook bekend als 'Tito', is de groep Chicos y Mendez ontstaan. De groep is uitgegroeid tot een sprankelende, muzikale band waarin beide songwriters elkaar aanvullen. Het duo creëert een 'latin alternative sound' die zich openstelt voor de wereld en voor hedendaagse invloeden (urban music, rock, pop,...). Deze muziek, die vaak overschakelt van Spaans naar Frans, creëert spontaan een energieke en feestelijke sfeer.
Sinds zijn oprichting heeft de groep CHICOS Y MENDEZ een EP uitgebracht en meer dan 200 concerten gegeven onder leiding van zijn inspirerende leadzanger David Méndez Yépez (met Belgisch - Peruviaanse roots). CHICOS Y MENDEZ presenteert nu zijn eerste album met 10 nieuwe nummers: “Esencias”.  Een uitgebalanceerde en intimistische plaat met een “Urban / Latin-alternative sound’ zonder stilistische of thematische beperkingen. De verfijnde productie en muzikale arrangementen bevestigen dat CHICOS Y MENDEZ niet alleen een live band is, maar ook muzikaal / in de studio zijn mannetje kan staan met een 'latin alternative sound' zonder stilistische of thematische grenzen.

De Clip: Of het nu in melodie of in woorden is, elke song op het debuut album vertelt een eigen verhaal. Zo belicht de single Reggaeton Feminista de absurditeit van genderongelijkheden. De getalenteerde Braziliaanse zangeres Flavia Coelho is de gast-ster in dit zonnig en geëngageerd nummer dat macho-gedrag - vaak geassocieerd met  ‘reggaetón’, maar evenzeer aan de hedendaagse maatschappij in het algemeen – aan de kaak stelt.

​De regie van de clip was in handen van Eléonore Coyette, zij zegt hierover:
Ik heb ervoor gekozen om het nummer te vertalen naar beelden die mijn eigen waarden als vrouw weerspiegelen. Niet om die clichématig tegenover ‘mannelijke waarden of rollen’ af te zetten maar eerder om te laten zien dat beide naast mekaar kunnen bestaan binnen één eenieder van ons.
Mexico is altijd al een inspiratiebron geweest, dus een knipoog naar Frida Kahlo lag voor de hand. Haar existentiële en atypische invulling van feminisme spoort met de achterliggende ideeën van het nummer ‘Reggaeton Feminista’. Reggaton wordt vaak geassocieerd met machismo, en dus wou David Mendez Yepez van Chicos y Mendez er dit keer een vrouwvriendelijk licht op laten schijnen. Net als Frida Kahlo haar identiteit, lichaam en seksualiteit in vraag stelde, leek het me interessant om David in haar huid te laten kruipen en die transformatie te ondergaan. Het Laatste Avondmaal als setting doet onmiddellijk vragen rijzen over de positie van de vrouw binnen religie. Ik wilde de rollen rond de tafel veranderen, in een open en zonnige ruimte waar 13 vrouwen zij aan zij een ​​rustig en beschouwend moment delen, en waar elk op zijn eigen manier interessant is.
De heldin van deze clip is de Braziliaanse ster Flavia Coelho, bruisend van energie. Ik wilde Frida Kahlo centraal, rustig en gegrond als ankerpunt voor de kracht van Flavia Coelho en haar zonnige flow en punch. Zonder te moraliseren probeert deze clip onze plaats in de wereld poëtisch in vraag te stellen

Mavis Staples

De legendarische Amerikaanse soul, rock-'n-roll & gospel queen Mavis Staples stelt haar gloednieuwe plaat 'Live in Londen' exclusief voor in het Openluchttheater. Deze eerste live-opname in 10 jaar is opgenomen in Londen Union Chapel en geproduceerd door Staples zelf. Op de plaat laat ze horen dat haar geest op 79-jarige leeftijd nog altijd even strijdlustig is en haar warme, doorleefde stem nog altijd even krachtig. Haar muziek stamt af uit een tijdperk van mythische soul en straalt altijd pure klasse uit. Ze werd bekend in de jaren vijftig als het gezicht van de invloedrijke muziekfamilie 'The Staple Singers’, één van de eerste artiesten die het protestlied combineerde met gospel.
The Staple Singers kregen internationale faam met R&B-klassiekers als Respect Yourself, I’ll Take You There en If You’re Ready Come (Come Go With Me). Sinds de jaren zestig timmerde de gevierde zangeres solo aan de weg en werkte ze ondertussen samen met klasbakken als Prince, Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, Gorillaz, Arcade Fire, Nick Cave en Wilco-frontman Jeff Tweedy.
De plaat If All I Was Was Black, geproduceerd door Tweedy, is haar meest politiek beladen soloplaat van deze eeuw waarmee ze trouw blijft aan de strijdlustige geest van The Staple Singers. De plaat is een aangrijpend, universeel pleidooi om voorwaarts te kijken en mededogen te tonen aan elkaar. Deze grote dame kan terugkijken op een knap en indrukwekkend palmares.
In 2005 ontving ze een Lifetime Achievement Award en in 2011 kreeg ze een Grammy voor haar album You Are Not Alone. De glorieuze stem van soul- en gospellegende Mavis Staples is van alle generaties en is meer dan ooit een rots in de branding.

 

Roland

Inmiddels 74, met diepe wortels in blues en folk, is Roland iedere muziekstijl meester, gaande van jazz naar ethno tot psychedelic. Zelf deelt hij zijn oeuvre in als 'Ethno Pop Folk’. Een levende legende, een archetype van een uitstervend ras: de 'Sound Magician’.
Zijn nieuwste album 'Folksongs from a Non-Existing' Land zuigt je, van bij de allereerste noot, mee in een de duistere en magische wereld van diens maker: Roland Van Campenhout. Je voelt de verwantschap met Ry Cooder’s legendarische soundtrack uit Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders) alsook de gewaagdheid van Captain Beefheart, de grote singer-songwriter Tom Waits en de sjamaan Dr. John.
Bij het maken van 'Folksongs from a Non-Existing Land' keerde Roland terug naar het oerlandschap in zichzelf. De trip door een onbestaande wildernis, een imaginaire wereld, geeft een enorme voldoening, een shot aan eindeloze creativiteit. Zelf definieert hij zijn laatste werk als 'Mantra Blues’. Belgische meester-gitarist en zanger begeleidt je live door een mysterieus, muzikaal en donker landschap en brengt enkele speciale gasten mee.

'Otel' – Ertebrekers’ debuutalbum dateert alweer uit 2016 – 'De zji' was een onvervalste meezing-hit en “Otel” bleek uitstekend cruisin’ materiaal. Mellow, funky, laidback... de zomer steeds in het handschoenenkastje.
Ondertussen is het 2019 en ook Ertebrekers bleven niet ter plaatse trappelen. Flip Kowlier, Peter Lesage en Jeffrey Bearelle staken afgelopen zomer de koppen opnieuw bij elkaar, wisselden muzikale ideeën uit, dronken koffie, kregen zin in ijs en gingen aan het werk.
Het nieuwe album 'Crème' laat de zon schijnen op het moment dat we er het meest naar snakken en borduurt mooi verder op het verhaal dat ze met 'Otel' al schreven. Pretentieloze pop-funk met hier en daar suave mellowness, vrolijke uptempo songs en een lekkere beat eronder. Maar 'Crème' is ook Ertebrekers 2.0, met de geest van Doe Maar en Het Goede Doel op de achtergrond, maar ook een duidelijke keuze voor 'de beat', 80ies analoge synths en eervolle knipogen naar early Prince en 80ies clubtracks.
Live krijgt het verhaal eveneens een kleine make-over. Naast drummer Karel De Backer is er nieuw bloed met Kasper Cornelus, een jong en vief, begenadigd toetsenist/gitarist die op het podium voor extra kleur zorgt.

A diverse and versatile guitar player, Luca di Luzio plays electric, acoustic and classical guitar with a style that covers everything from jazz standards and bossa nova to funky, fusion and blues. Luca is a graduate of the Conservatorio di Musica Frescobaldi di Ferrara music conservatory in Italy, with a degree in Jazz guitar. During the course of his extensive studies he has attended seminars and masterclasses with Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Mick Goodrick, Jim Hall, Joe Diorio, John Abercrombie, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Donovan Mixon, Jim Kelly, and Garrison Fewell. His studies in harmony and guitar continue with Les Wise and Dean Brown.

His performance and concert career include collaborating with a multitude of national and international artists, including Jimmy Haslip, Marvin Smitty Smith, Roberto Spadoni, Marco Tamburini, Max Ionata, Fabrizio Bosso, Paolo Fresu, Massimo Manzi, Javier Girotto, James Newton, Bob Stoloff, Tom Sheret, Teo Ciavarella, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Lauren Bush, Barend Midelhoff, James Monque D., Howard Paul and Garrison Fewell with festivals and concerts in Europe and the United States. A member of the SIDMA Orchestra from 2008 to 2013 he has also played with the Jazzlife Orchestra and the Conservatorio Frescobaldi Big Band.
In March 2018 Luca toured in Italy with Jimmy Haslip, Marvin Smitty Smith and Max Ionata to promote the upcoming CD, Globetrotter a journey in contemporary jazz where funk, blues, jazz and Latin music come together on a musical common path. All the tracks are original and written by Luca di Luzio, a guitar player who studied different music styles to generate his personal music vision, based on two main characteristics: melody and groove. Therefore, he decided to collaborate with two heavy hitting players bassist, Jimmy Haslip and drummer Dave Weckl for this recording project. The album also features George Whitty on keyboards and Max Ionata on tenor saxophone with special guest Alessandro Fariselli on saxophone.

It is a tune that reflects a change in my life, the great choice of leaving my previous job and plunge into music world because just dunking your feet is not enough. After nearly 20 years spent working as consultant and businessman I decided to leave my job and dedicate myself only to music. I had to run very fast to make up for lost time, I had to concentrate myself avoiding any distractions that would have taken me away from my goals. On this tune, my friend and buddy in many bands , Alessandro Fariselli, blows a great solo on his tenor Saxophone.

The only solo guitar tune in the album: it is dedicated to my father. I played it for him a few months before he passed away in 2014. He was laying on the couch and I was playing some standard song for him. Then he asked me to play an “Italian song” and I improvised this melody that I named “Simple Italian Song”. My dad loved music and he always encou¬raged me to do my best in everything.

Marton Juhasz’s career began in 2005 when he won the national first prize for solo percussion in Hungary. In 2006, he studied at Drumtech, London where he was awarded prize for top overall student. In 2007, he was accepted to Berklee College of Music, Boston and graduated summa cum laude in 2011.

In 2010, he was the recipient of the Foundation for Hungarian Percussion Culture’s yearly award. After returning from the United States in 2012 Marton has been active in Europe and has had the opportunity to work with musicians such as Lionel Loueke, Gilad Hekselman, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Byron Wallen, Peter King, Bela Szakcsi Lakatos, Szymon Mika, Robert Szakcsi Lakatos, Kenji Herbert, Olga Konkova, Matyas Gayer, Kristof Bacso, Viktor Toth, Stefan Gottfried, Daniel Szabo, Marton Fenyvesi, Nikoletta Szoke, Jozsef Barcza Horvath, Matyas Szandai, Ondrej Stveracek, Mike Gotthard, Aron Talas, Rob Luft, Gabor Bolla, Cesar Joaniquet, Janos Aved, Alan Benzie, Arpad Tzumo and Rozina Patkai. In 2014 and 2015, Marton was voted ‘Drummer of the Year’ on the JazzMa online readers’ poll. In 2017, ‘Pannon Blue’ featuring Lionel Loueke won ‘Best Hungarian Jazz Album’ in the Gramofon Awards. In 2017 Marton became the first person to hold the drum chair of the prestigious Focusyear Ensemble directed by Wolfgang Muthspiel.

During the one year program the band received intensive coaching from some of the most respected names in contemporary jazz: Guillermo Klein, Jeff Ballard, Django Bates, Theo Bleckmann, Avishai Cohen, Larry Grenadier, Dave Holland, Lionel Loueke, Adrian Mears, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gwilym Simcock, Becca Stevens, Steve Swallow & Mark Turner. In 2018, the Alan Benzie Trio’s second album Little Mysteries won the ‘Best Album’ prize at the Scottish Jazz Awards. Starting in 2019, Marton will perform with Christian Muthspiel’s Orjazztra Project.
Discovery is a beautiful, daring album of originals is a testament to the evocative power of 21st century jazz. Before recording the music, the eight musicians on the record spent a year rehearsing and playing together under the tutelage of some of the most respected names in jazz - Wolfgang Mutshpiel,

Na 10 intensieve jaren met The Mighty Gators, nam Guy Verlinde eind vorig jaar met een spetterend concert in de Ancienne Belgique afscheid van zijn band. De cirkel was rond en hij was klaar voor een nieuw hoofdstuk in carrière.
Deze nieuwe periode luidt hij in met de release van het persoonlijk akoestisch album “All Is Forgiven”, dat hij samen opnam met een schare topmuzikanten zoals Nils De Caster, Kathleen Vandenhoudt, Richard van Bergen (NL) en René Stock.
Guy Verlinde kennen we als een energieke blues performer. Maar op dit album laat hij zich van zijn meest ingetogen en intimistische kant zien.
Hij graaft steeds dieper, waardoor dit verreweg zijn meest persoonlijke plaat is. Verlinde puurt alles uit in een zoektocht naar de juiste woorden en klanken om zo tot de essentie te komen. Zijn muziek is volwassen geworden en op dit album klinkt hij als een volleerd singer-songwriter, die zijn verhalen ondersteunt met de juiste klanken; waardoor de songs schilderachtige muzikale vertellingen worden. Dit is een album waar de inhoud centraal staat en waar hij beladen thema’s als: vergeving, zelfmoord, dementie, bedrog, verlies, … op meesterlijke wijze beschrijft. Maar daarnaast ook weet hoe een mooie boodschap van hoop, kracht, liefde, dankbaarheid, zelfontplooiing, … mee te geven aan de luisteraar.
Het album is prachtig vormgegeven door illustratrice Sainabou Van Raemdonck, die de sfeer van de nummers vertaalde naar het artwork en het booklet van 20 pagina’s waarin alle teksten werden toegevoegd.

De Iers-Amerikaanse popfolkgroep The Kelly Family komt op 19 januari 2020 naar het Antwerps Sportpaleis om er de 25ste verjaardag van hun nummer 1-album "Over The Hump" te vieren.
Als één van de meest succesvolle Ierse bands aller tijden slaagde The Kelly Family erin om 20 miljoen albums te verkopen, meer dan 50 awards te verzamelen en talloze gouden en platina awards op hun naam te schrijven.
2019 is een speciaal jaar voor The Kelly Family. Het album "Over The Hump” zal dit jaar namelijk zijn 25ste verjaardag aantikken. Een kwarteeuw na de release van dit album zal de band een grootse arenatour doen, genaamd "25 YEARS - OVER THE HUMP”, waar deze speciale gelegenheid gevierd wordt met hun fans.  
The Kelly Family: "Tijdens deze tour zullen we de show opsplitsen in twee delen. Het eerste deel van de show zullen we het album "Over The Hump” spelen, in de volgorde zoals het ook op de tracklist staat. ​After a thirty-year-plus hiatus, Todd Rundgren's Utopia graced the Chicago Theatre stage, with the hopes of promising fans an extraordinary, other-worldly concert experience. The original 70's-formed band established a stellar reputation for stretching the prog rock/pop envelope and infusing their mostly original material with verve and state-of-the-art technique. On this occasion the band featured Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Willie Wilcox and Gil Assayas.
 
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Todd Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front Nazz, the quintessential 1960's psychedelic group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, Runt. But it was 1972's seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him 'Rock's New Wunderkind'. It was followed by such landmark LPs as A Wizard, A True Star and The Hermit of Mink Hollow, as well as such hit singles as “I Saw The Light, “Hello It's Me,” “Can We Still Be Friends,” and “Bang The Drum.”
 
Rundgren has performed a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He is known for his sophisticated and often-unorthodox music, flamboyant stage outfits, and his later experiments with interactive entertainment. He also produced innovative music videos, pioneered forms of multimedia, and was an early adopter and promoter of various computer technologies.

Reports are emerging that Mark Hollis, co-founder of the band Talk Talk, has died at the age of 64.
While no official confirmation has yet been released, the news has been reported via several media outlets and sources close to Hollis. Many are also already paying tribute to the influential musician on social media including the musician’s cousin, Anthony Costello, Paul Webb – his former band mate – and Tim Pope, who directed Talk Talk’s music videos.
The lead singer and primary songwriter of Talk Talk, Hollis co-founded the band in 1981 alongside drummer Lee Harris, bassist Paul Webb and keyboard player Simon Brenner. They had early synth-pop success with singles ‘Talk Talk’, ‘It’s My Life’ and ‘Such a Shame’ together with several critically-acclaimed albums, including ‘Spirit of Eden’ and ‘Laughing Stock.’

After the band disbanded in 1991, Hollis released a well received, self-titled solo album in 1998 before retiring from the music industry. Speaking about his decision not to tour and to maintain a private lifestyle at the time, Hollis said: “I choose for my family. Maybe others are capable of doing it, but I can’t go on tour and be a good dad at the same time.”

Komiek, liedjesschrijver en auteur Urbanus heeft gisteren in Antwerpen de "Muze" van auteursrechtenmaatschappij Sabam gekregen. Hij kreeg de prijs voor zijn hele carrière na de première van zijn eerste animatiefilm "Urbanus: de Vuilnisheld". Dat meldt Sabam.Urbanus, die dit jaar 70 jaar wordt, maakte vanaf de jaren zeventig faam, eerst als cabaretier, nadien ook in films en tv-programma's, en uiteraard met de Urbanus-strips (samen met tekenaar Willy Linthout). In totaal telt de databank van Sabam zo maar even 443 werken van Urbanus.

"Urbanus is niet alleen de peetvader van de Vlaamse comedy, maar als auteur is hij bovendien een veelzijdige creatieveling die alle genres en generaties overstijgt", stelde Sabam-CEO Carine Libert bij de overhandiging van de "Muze", een bronzen beeldje van de hand van kunstenaar Hubert Féguenne. "Met deze Muze wil Sabam laten zien dat zijn collega-auteurs bijzonder trots zijn op de rijkgevulde carrière van Urbain Servranckx."

De tekenfilm "Urbanus: de Vuilnisheld" komt op 27 februari in de zalen.

De "Muze" wordt sinds 1984 uitgereikt als bekroning voor een bijzonder succesvolle carrière van een Sabam-vennoot. Eerdere winnaars zijn onder anderen Pieter Aspe, Arno, Robbe de Hert, Rocco Granata, Dani Klein, Harry Kümel, Raoul Servais, Jacques Vermeire en Will Tura.

Het uitverkochte concert van het jonge Amerikaanse rockgeweld Greta Van Fleet voorzien op donderdag 28 februari in Lotto Arena in Antwerpen wordt uitgesteld naar vrijdag 15 november. De zaal wijzigt niet. Reeds aangekochte tickets voor het concert van 28 februari blijven geldig voor de nieuwe datum op 15 november. Ticketkopers die niet aanwezig kunnen zijn in november krijgen hun ticket terugbetaald via het verkooppunt waar het ticket aangekocht werd en dit tot 28 maart.
 
De band bracht het nieuws als volgt aan de fans:
 
"Dear European Fans,
 
We have some sincerely unfortunate news regarding our upcoming shows February 22 - March 17 and must announce a complete reschedule to this Fall. A year and a half of constant touring has been both invigorating and exhausting. Josh currently has a relentless upper respiratory infection that has not yet had the chance to heal. His doctor has required extended rest as the only path to full recovery. It now feels necessary for the entire band to recalibrate our balance, both physically and mentally. Rather than continuing on to more performances and exacerbate things further, we have made this decision in order to give you the full Greta Van Fleet experience when we meet again. All tickets for the upcoming shows in the next month will transfer to the rescheduled dates, there is no need to do anything other than hold on to your current ticket to attend the rescheduled show. Refunds are available at point of purchase should you not be able to attend. We are heartbroken in sharing this setback with you and hope you can understand this painful decision. It will be extremely satisfying to reconcile this calamity by making the most of our time together in a healthier state. All dates are listed below. For the cities that have not been assigned a date yet, we are waiting on venue availability, but will have them confirmed and announced tomorrow. Every show missed will take place, that is a promise. We are tremendously grateful for your patience.

Het piepjonge Amerikaanse viertal Greta Van Fleet bestaat uit de broers Josh Kiszka (vocals), Jake Kiszka (guitars), en Sam Kiszka (bass & keys), en hun jeugdvriend Danny Wagner (drums). Amper twintig, met een oude muziekziel à la Led Zeppelin, ademt de band retrorock pur sang uit, en rocken ze als jonge veulens. ​It’s rare to find a ’60s legend still on trailblazing form in their eighth decade. The 73-year-old guitarist finds himself in a golden late-bloom of creativity. In recent years, his solo output has been championed by both press and public, with the impact of 2014’s ‘Something’s About To Change’, 2016’s ‘Where You Are Going To’ and 2017’s ‘Time & Emotion’ setting up some of his best-attended US dates since he conquered that continent with ‘Bridge Of Sighs’ in the mid-’70s.
 
The bluesman’s back pages leave no doubt of his towering contribution. Follow the thread back to ’50s Southend, where the teenage Trower lived and breathed a vinyl collection that left an indelible mark on him. Making his first mark in R&B hopefuls The Paramounts, he then forged his reputation over a five-album tenure with Procol Harum. His solo career exploded in 1974 with ‘Bridge Of Sighs’, the gold-selling masterpiece. Suddenly, Trower was a mainstream draw in the States, booming from prime-time radio, taking the stage at stadiums. That wave of popularity carried Trower into a series of celebrated collaborations with Jack Bruce that began with B.L.T. (1981), and even saw him guesting on tracks for Bryan Ferry’s acclaimed Taxi (1993).
 
With ‘Coming Closer To The Day’, his songcraft and soulful performances have never sounded more alive – even on an album whose title track acknowledges that life is short and time precious. “I’m saying that I’m nearer the end than the beginning,” he explains. “But that doesn’t scare me. Not at all. If I went tomorrow, I’d feel like I’d been blessed with being able to achieve an incredible amount as a musician.”

​The album was recorded at Studio 91 in Newbury, with engineer Sam Winfield. “’Diving Bell’ is probably my favourite track on the album,” he says. “‘Truth Or Lies’, that one was quite hard to pull off. I love the song, but I recorded it once and wasn’t happy with it, so I started from scratch again. It’s got quite a strong early R&B flavour to it. That song is not really about me. I’m writing from the viewpoint of a guy whose loved one has been messing around. ‘Someone Of Great Renown’, again, that song isn’t about me, but it’s maybe someone that I’d like to be.”
 
“’Lonesome Road’,” he continues, “that’s about me touring and asking how long I can go on with it. That’s definitely coming from my heart and head. ‘Ghosts’ is about things from the past where you didn’t do right in your personal life. ‘Don’t Ever Change’ is an out-and-out love song: a very nice, easy vibe, but still quite soulful.”
 
The calibre of the songwriting on ‘Coming Closer To The Day’ is matched by Trower’s performances, with the bandleader handling all instruments except the drums. His basslines are supple and rhythmic, his vocals growl and and the lead guitar work only adds to his reputation as an all-time-great soloist. 
 
For Robin Trower, the next great song is always right there at his fingertips. For five decades, the iconic British bluesman has written the same way. The valves glow in his Marshall amplifier. Those fabled hands roam the neck of his Fender Stratocaster. Then the music starts to flow: raw and real, played with fire and skill, untainted by commercial aspirations, accompanied by lyrics that get to the guts of the matter.

De bekende pianist en schrijver Ketil Bjornstad heeft dit jaar z’n ’50 years as as musician and performing artist-anniversary’. Op 16-jarige leeftijd debuteerde hij als pianist op 10 januari 1969 met het Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Op 11 augustus van dit jaar zal hij dit als openingsact vieren in The Opera House tijdens het Oslo Jazz festival.
Eind vorig jaar verscheen nog z’n laatste studio-album “Hun Som Kjenner Tristheten Ved Ting” met de Noorse (jazz-)zangeres Eva Bjerga Haugen. Dit werk was gebaseerd op het dichtboekwerk “Litt Trist Matematikk” van de auteur Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold.
Zijn feestjaar begint met de heruitgave van zijn befaamde “Rainbow Sessions”. Naast de drie bekende cd’s “The Long Farewell (Final Rainbow Session)”, “The Rainbow (First New Rainbow Session)” en “The Way Through The Woods (The New Steinway Rainbow Session)” is deze luxe verpakte 2019-boxset-edition voorzien van de bonus-cd “The Third Instrument (The Last Session)” met 29 ‘unreleased tracks’ met opnamen van 5 verschillende Rainbow-sessies tussen 2013 en 2017.
