David Grammont (October 12, 1967 – February 16, 2021), better known under his stage name Tonton David was born in Réunion. David had a turbulent childhood in a suburb of Paris. He left his family aged 14 and had a successful career in music with songs featuring powerful and political lyrics. His death, in Metz (France), was announced on February 16, 2021.
David was a French Reggae singer. He was renowned for his raggamuffin performances but used influences of soul music, gro kâ (from the French West Indies), the Zairian rumba. In 1990, David had his big break when he was featured in a TV report about "Black Paris". Following that performance, David was signed by the Virgin record label. Shortly after, he recorded "Peuples du monde", which was featured in French rap compilation Rapattitudes.
Le blues de la racaille released on December 2, 1991, was his debut album in which he explored social issues such as unemployment, poverty, and racism, becoming a figurehead for a whole generation of disenchanted French youth. In 1991, he performed in front of an audience of 12,000 music fans at the Fête des Kafs in Saint Denis, La Réunion, and in 1992 at Reggae Sunsplash festival in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1993, he released his second album Allez leur dire recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. "Sûr et certain" taken from the same album was released as a single.
1995 saw his biggest success to date with the release of the song "Chacun sa route", which was used in the soundtrack of the film Un indien dans la ville. His third album Récidiviste in 1995 included the single "Pour tout le monde pareil" and featured a collaboration with rai star Cheb Mami in "Fugitifs". His fourth album Faut qu'ça arrête was more heavily influenced by Haitian music, after he collaborated with Haitian musician Papa Jube.

DESERT HOLLOW TO RELEASE DEBUT EP, THIRSTY
(May 21, 2021 Mule Kick Records)
Traditional Folk & Bluegrass Filtered Through A Modern Independent Gypsy Spirit
Foto
Desert Hollow is a young, California-based folkie duet consisting of Xander Hitzig and Nicole Olney.  The duo are both independent songwriters who have come together in love and creative collaboration and are creating a totally unique sound.  “We have a lot of things to say, and even more to play,” quips Olney.  Their name, Desert Hollow is a definition of their combined geographical and artistic influences.  Hitzig is from West Virginia and Olney is from the California desert. They both share a love for early traditional folk and bluegrass, but are equally passionate about indie-folk and alt-country music.

Both Hitzig and Olney wrote and sang on their debut 5-song EP, Thirsty. Hitzig also contributes lead guitar, fiddle, mandolin, penny whistle, kazoo and 5-string banjo, while Olney provides guitar, banjolele, and kazoo. They brought in guests Matt Lucich (Paula Cole, Kate Pierson) on drums and percussion, James “Hutch” Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan) on bass, Johnny Hawthorn (The HawtThornes) on steel guitar, and Adrienne Isom (Nocona and Mule Kick Records) on bass. The record was produced by Steve Berns (who also engineers) and KP Hawthorn (Mule Kick Records, The HawtThorns).

The two met and clicked on the set of a country musical, Sneaky Ole Time in which they both had lead roles.  The creative and biological chemistry was apparent from the start. Their voices meld in a way that old bluegrassers would call a “blood harmony” and when they come together to play, it’s like two puzzle pieces clicking together.  “Xander and I both have a knack for writing a unique song,” Olney notes.  “And those words we write are known to rest on a solid musical bed created mostly by the multi-instrumental genius that is Xander Hitzig.  I think we are also at this point known for our in-between-song banter.  We do solid banter.”

The EP kicks off with the title song, “Thirsty”, written by Olney.  “I felt more like an archeologist than a writer, scraping away the dirt from the bones of the thing.  Once I finally had the words and basic chord progression, I shared it with Xander and he picked up his 5-string banjo and started playing along.” She adds laughingly, “The song didn’t originally have a penny whistle.  I went downstairs to get coffee for five minutes and I came back to a three part penny whistle solo.”

Hitzig was inspired to write “I Can’t Wait For Summer” visiting West Virginia in early spring.  “I was sitting on the porch plucking my banjo on my parent’s farm and realized the firewood was getting low,” he mused. “Looking at the dwindling firewood pile, I thought, ‘I can’t wait for summer.”’

“Look At Those Birds” was also crafted during a visit to West Virginia, but Olney had the beginnings of this song.  On their way to a family dinner party, she looked up and saw birds circling in the sky. In a fit of goofy inspiration, she blurted out the melody and words that hadn’t been written yet, “Look at those birds, flying high up in the West Virginia skyyy…” Hitzig declared it a song and she finished writing it the next day.  “We flew to Austin for SXSW a few days later and in our hotel room, Xander used the picking pattern he made up and his impeccable ear to create the perfect guitar part for the song.”

Hitzig wrote “Take Me Back To Nowhere” long before meeting Olney.  It’s a song he used to perform with his group Brownchicken Browncow Stringband. He was inspired after living in a van in New Orleans with the five-piece band for two weeks. “You can image that ‘nowhere’ seemed like a good place to get back to as quickly as possible.”

Olney wrote “Mary” after a panel at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.  “There was a guy telling a story about asking his songwriting hero about how to write a song. He responded with ‘take a song of someone else’s you really like and re-write it. Then just change the chords.’  So I gave that trick a whirl.  I took a song that I loved by Gregory Alan Isakov and ‘Mary’ popped out. Xander wrote that brilliant lead guitar part for it, which holds the song just as much as the words.”

Meeting KP Hawthorn and Adrienne Isom of Mulekick Records (and formerly of Rebelle Road Productions) was a huge milestone for the couple. “We are so grateful for every opportunity they have given us and everything they have taught us about navigating the music industry,” said Olney.

The beginnings of the record happened when Olney and Hitzig were at SXSW working a Rebelle Road showcase.  Hitzig was backing up Nocona and Alice Wallace, and Olney was working as an MC. Hitzig had a solo set on the last day of the festival and asked Olney to get up and sing a few of their songs with him. KP Hawthorn, co-creator of the showcase spoke with them afterwards about how much she had enjoyed the songs and wondered if they wanted to get in the studio one they all got back to L.A. “We agreed!” said Olney. “Once we were back, KP introduced us to Steve Berns, and a few weeks later we were recording at his studio, Fitting Room Studio.”

The pandemic had a change of plans for everyone in 2020 and Desert Hollow was no exception.  “This last year has been challenging, that almost goes without saying,” states Olney.  “However, it was also one of the greatest years of our lives. We raised money to film our music videos in February and in April we purchased our home on wheels, a Toyota Dolphin RV named, Dolly.  We crossed the country back and forth and lived on the road for a while.  We regularly hosted Facebook Live shows and even had a few socially distanced outdoor shows.  The music never stopped.”

In September, they put Dolly in storage and flew to Maui to rest for a while.  And they are still there today, as they prepare for the release of this very special debut album. “I want people to know that this album is truly the tip of the iceberg.  Xander and I are sort of songwriting machines and we are just so excited to release this music so that we can release so much more music.”

Bombataz over Vinyl Williams:
"Vinyl Williams, a true VR sonic wizard, is an LA-based multimedia VR artist and musician. The videoclip he made for us  for the track 'Skins' can be classified as syncretic havens of inter-dimensional harmony that entangle all dualistic concepts into unified ineffabilities. We think it matches the song’s vibe perfectly"

Pacheco became an internationally renowned star and toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. His charanga was the first Latin band to headline the Apollo Theater in New York City in 1962 and 1963. Pacheco a resident of Fort Lee, New Jersey, died at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey, aged 85, after being hospitalized for complications stemming from pneumonia.
In 1946, when Pacheco was 11, his family moved to New York City. He inherited his passion for music from his father, Rafael Azarías Pacheco, who was the bandleader and clarinetist of the Orquesta Santa Cecilia, one of the leading Dominican big bands of the 1930s, famous for being the first to record Luis Alberti's merengue "Compadre Pedro Juan". Rafael was the grandson of a Spanish soldier who arrived during the Spanish reannexation of Santo Domingo. His mother, Octavia Knipping Rochet, was the granddaughter of a French colonist, and the great-granddaughter of a German merchant who was married to a Dominican woman born to Spanish colonists.
Pacheco continued polishing his musical skills, learning to play the accordion, violin, flute, saxophone, and clarinet. He also graduated in electrical engineering at Brooklyn Technical High School in the 1950s, but he quit his job as an engineer due to the low salary. In 1953, Pacheco played percussion and sung with Gil Suárez's band and, in 1954, he formed The Chuchulecos Boys with Eddie Palmieri on piano, Barry Rogers on trombone, and other future figures of renown in the New York salsa scene: Al Santiago, Mike Collazo, and Ray Santos. They played at weddings and other social events.
Pacheco was a Dominican musician, arranger, bandleader, and record producer. He later played percussion for several bands, including late-night shows, Lou Pérez's band The Mambaleros, and the popular orchestras of Tito Puente, Xavier Cugat, and Dioris Valladares. As a flutist and bandleader, Pacheco became one of the leading exponents of the Cuban charanga format in the United States in the early 1960s. As the founder and musical director of Fania Records, Pacheco became a leading figure in the New York salsa scene in the 1960s and 1970s.
Pacheco popularized the use of the term "salsa" and established the Fania All-Stars to showcase the leading artists of the genre. On March 24, 2009, Pacheco was awarded "El Soberano", the highest distinction given by the Association of Art Columnists of the Dominican Republic. In August 2020, Johnny Pacheco's composition "Celia y Tito' by Tito Puente and Celia Cruz was featured in the 4th season finale of the NBC TV network program "World of Dance' which is produced and judged by international film and recording star Jennifer Lopez. Among his many songs utilized in Film and Television.

Acclaimed California-Based Singer Will Porter Set to Reissue His Lauded CD, "Tick Tock Tick," April 16

Landmark Album Produced in New Orleans by Iconic Wardell Quezergue Features Special Guests
Dr. John, Bettye LaVette,Leo Nocentelli & The Womack Brothers

One of the most critically-acclaimed – but limited released - albums of the past decade, Tick Tock Tick, the soul-drenched roots disc from San Francisco-based singer Will Porter, will be reissued on the Gramofono Sound label April 16 to audiences throughout North America. Recorded at Esplanade Studios, Tick Tock Tick also showcases stellar work from a host of additional Crescent City titans and SF Bay Area horns.

Produced and arranged by the renowned Wardell Quezergue (pronounced “Kah-Zair”), creator of some of the biggest hits on Stax, Malaco, and Red Bird, Tick Tock Tick pairs Will Porter with a dazzling array of special guests, including the legendary Dr. John and Bettye LaVette, as well as New Orleans guitar icon Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, Yellow Jackets bassist Jimmy Haslip, The Womack Brothers (Curtis & Friendly) and the Louisiana Philharmonic Strings. Tick Tock Tick was first released in 2016 with extremely limited distribution in the USA, as the deal Porter signed with the ACE UK label called for hard copy distribution In Europe, Japan and Australia, but NOT the United States. After a problem with a streaming agency, Porter decided to pull down all digital streaming. Nearly all very limited American media that received a copy wrote about it or played it, and it made BEST OF THE YEAR critics’ lists, garnered an R&B album of the year nomination in New Orleans and was dubbed “A Soul Masterpiece.”

Quezergue, who died at age 81 shortly after completing his work on the Tick Tock Tick album, was a master producer and arranger, who left his mark on a host of classic R&B, blues, jazz, pop and soul recordings over the years, including “Mr. Big Stuff,” “Groove Me,” “Chapel of Love,” Iko Iko,” Misty Blue,” “Barefootin’,” “Big Chief” and many more. “I had won awards and had million-selling records, but I never received so much critical praise from the press as I did for the first album from Will Porter,” said Quezergue at the time. “Will already sounded like who he wanted to be. He didn’t come to New Orleans to copy anyone. Often with my hits, the singers (as good as they might have been) were sometimes beside the point; they were part of the recording. With Will and Mac (Dr. John), I try to work off of what I hear coming from them. Will Porter is subtle, expressive, deep and soulful.”

“Wardell was an acknowledged genius,” says Will Porter about his esteemed producer. “On my last day with him, he told me he thought this album was his best ‘complete’ project     (he was primarily known for singles), and he cried while listening to the rough mixes.”

The legendary Dr. John – R&R Hall of Fame inductee, 6-time Grammy winner and Americana Music Icon - is featured on two duets with Porter, the title track and “When the Battle Is Over,” songs he wrote. His relationship with Quezergue began as a teenage member of Wardell’s band.
Six-time Grammy nominee Bettye LaVette, called “The Great Lady of Soul,” joins Porter for the powerful Bob Dylan-penned ballad, “Make You Feel My Love.” “Bettye suggested we record together,” recalls Porter about how her participation on the new album came to pass. “We were backstage, and I was so surprised that I called in a witness and made her say it again.”

Now, the North American Continent can get a chance to hear the voice that venerated writer John Swenson called, “a cross between the young Bobby Bland and the mature Lou Rawls;”   and OffBeat magazine described as “a magnificent singer, with a great sense of swing, unique phrasing and that effable quality of Soul that all greats possess.”

Will Porter left his native West Virginia/Appalachia as a teenager, for New York City’s Greenwich Village, singing with his then-wife, a combination of folk, gospel and blues. When the act broke up, he settled in San Francisco, slowly building a band and following in clubs and concert venues, twice closing The San Francisco Blues Festival. Around 1980, he became the musical director and opener for Motown legend Mary Wells, which continued until her death. That relationship led to band-leading for many R&B and rock acts, and musical directing for Percy Sledge, Barbara Lewis, The Shirelles and Billy Preston. On a tour with Preston, he met Wardell Quezergue, who helmed his first album, Happy, which, even with limited distribution was named “Best Produced Album” by the NY Jazz and Blues Society. The album received   rave reviews; leading to Wardell’s calling Porter back to New Orleans for Tick Tock Tick.

Allen Farst, founder of Niche Productions, is thrilled to announce the signing of a distribution deal with Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios Company, to release his latest film, “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man,” a sterling documentary on the rock ‘n’ roll pianist/keyboardist often described as the “Fifth Rolling Stone. The film was released to several Video-On-Demand (VOD) outlets on December, 2020.
Directed by Farst, “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man” provides an epic, in-depth look into Leavell’s life both on and off the stage. Leavell has played and toured with the Rolling Stones since 1982, and his status as rock royalty may be equaled only by his stature within the world of environmental forestry, where he previously has been named the National Tree Farmer of the Year in the United States. It’s this fascinating combination of passions, coupled with more than 80 gripping interviews from legendary musicians with a combined 58 Grammy Awards, that already has produced quite the buzz for the film.

The documentary captivated crowds last year at both the Macon Film Festival and Sedona International Film Festival, the latter of which recognized the film as the 2020 People’s Choice Award. “This is a MUST-SEE film for anyone who loves great music and great documentaries,” said Patrick Schweiss, Artistic Director of the Sedona International Film Festival. “Director Allen Farst has managed to capture the life of one of the great keyboard legends, Chuck Leavell, who has worked with all the greatest musicians…The Tree Man’ was a rousing hit at our festival, with audience members cheering and raving about the film!”
“I’ve seen plenty of rock documentaries in my many years, and this one honestly is one of the best rockumentaries you’ll ever see,” said Ivor Levene of Goldmine Magazine.

“Allen and I have been working on this for over three years now and I have to tip my hat to him. He's done a masterful job," said Chuck Leavell.
“Chuck's story is more than music. It's about life, love and the precious world we live in. The story is like a circle, the top 180 is his career in music. The bottom 180 is a mix of a love story and his lifelong work in forestry. You will laugh and cry at all of the right moments,” said Director, Allen Farst.
The documentary is full of star power, including interviews with Billy Bob Thornton, Mick Jagger, President Jimmy Carter, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Dickey Betts, Paul Shaffer, Chris Robinson, Charlie Daniels, Miranda Lambert, Charlie Watts, Bruce Hornsby, Juliann Lennon, Mike Mills, John Bell, Pat Monahan, Ronnie Wood, Warren Haynes, John Mayer, David Gilmour and more.

Bjorn Berge - 1e single/videoclip "The Wrangler Man" van nieuwe cd/lp "Heavy Gauge"

16/2/2021

0 Reacties

Foto
“The Wrangler Man” is de eerste single/videoclip van Bjorn Berge’s nieuwe cd/lp “Heavy Gauge”
Twee jaar geleden verscheen Bjorn Berge’s laatste album “Who Else?”. “Heavy Gauge” is het resultaat en bevat de bekende ingredienten; ‘exquisite guitar playing, ballads, groove, blues and a lot of good time music’. Zoals altijd met de veelzijdige Bjorn ‘virtuoso of the twelve-string guitar’ Berge heeft ‘the blues no limits’ en worden ook genres als folk, jazz, pop en rock er lekker pakkend doorheen gehusseld.

Bjorn Berge is the Norwegian guitarist / vocalist / blues-artist who, probably more often than others, dares to follow his own paths in order to find his personal musical medium of expression. Since he won the Best Musician Of The Year-award in 1999 for his album “Blues Hit Me” (1998), the indicator has pointed in but one direction – upwards. The proof of this is his two Norwegian Grammy Awards (Spellemannprisen) which he received for “Stringmachine” (2001) and “Illustrated Man” (2002). Bjorn’s uncompromising style and distinctive character find their clearest expression when he really enjoys himself; alone on the stage with his guitars and his ‘stompcase’. He has a voice like gravel and broken glass, and those who have seen this man on stage rate him highly as a musicial phenomenon, a true performer and virtuoso of the twelve-string guitar. With Bjorn Berge the blues seems to have no limits!
After a gap of six years Berge released last year his twelfth studio-album “Who Else?”. He showed that he still wasn’t afraid to mix different genres on an album, and neither is he this time. Through “Heavy Gauge” we’re served again with exquisite guitar playing, ballads, blues and a lot of ‘good time music’. The album consists of nine original songs, six of them with Bjorn solo and three tracks with his band.
He was born September 23rd 1968 in the Norwegian westcoast city Sveio, near Haugesund. He started to play guitar around the age of thirteen, and since that time, he has been playing more and more, and has been working as a professional for thirty years now. Since 2014 he is also guitarist in the very popular Norwegian band Vamp. Armed with only his guitars, Berge is a musical highway robber savvy enough to leave the mediocre by the wayside, and only take with him what can enrich his music and performance. His concerts are not always easy to describe, as he combines several genres such as folk, jazz, blues, pop and rock. On stage Bjorn usually performs only his own material, but he also makes his own unique and hefty interpretations and versions of songs from artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Morphine, Joni Mitchell and Motorhead. He plays as if he had fifty sets of arms and twenty pairs of legs, and with an insatiable musical curiosity and appetite which will never allow him to become jaded or stuck in a rut. Berge has still got the rebellion and curiosity of youth in him, restlessness is in his blood. And the devil’s snapping at his heels.

Louis Clark ruste in vrede!

‘Witte nachten’ is van het kaliber ‘My suitor’ (Berntholer), ‘August’ (Pieter-Jan De Smet) of ‘A.G.N.E.S.’ (1000 Ohm).

‘Witte nachten’ gaat over huiselijk geweld.

JAZZ DRUMMER MILFORD GRAVES DIED

Foto
Milford Graves (August 20, 1941 – February 12, 2021) was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Graves began playing drums at age three and was introduced to the congas at age eight. He also studied timbales and African hand drumming at an early age. NPR journalist Lars Gotrich confirmed that Graves passed away of congestive heart failure at 79.
By the early 1960s, he was leading dance bands and playing in Latin/Afro Cuban ensembles in New York on bills alongside Cal Tjader and Herbie Mann. His group, the Milford Graves Latino Quintet, included saxophonist Pete Yellin, pianist Chick Corea, bassist Lisle Atkinson, and conga player Bill Fitch. In 1962, Graves heard the John Coltrane quartet with Elvin Jones, whose drumming made a strong impression. The following year, Graves acquired a standard drum set from pianist Hal Galper and began using it regularly.
Graves was an American jazz drummer, percussionist, Professor Emeritus of Music, researcher/inventor, visual artist/sculptor, gardener/herbalist, and martial artist. Graves is noteworthy for his early avant-garde contributions in the 1960s with Paul Bley, Albert Ayler, and the New York Art Quartet, and is considered to be a free jazz pioneer, liberating percussion from its timekeeping role. The composer and saxophonist John Zorn referred to Graves as "basically a 20th-century shaman."
Graves has also provided artwork for some of his albums and more recently has exhibited sculptures that tie together his interests in music and martial arts, writing: "I've been thinking about sculpture as a teaching tool. There's a saying I used to always hear: 'sculpture is frozen music.' I want something with some kind of movement to it. I'm adding elements that are not static, like transducers. I also use my years and years of experience in music and my training in martial arts to understand sculpture. There were movements I used to do that would be very quiet, maybe something from aikido or tai chi.
Very slow, very slow ... then all of a sudden you would burst out with this explosive, passive-aggressive energy. I wondered how I would put that into a piece of sculpture. I thought the explosion would be to put together some unorthodox elements and have contradictions set in. If a person were to look at it, it would provoke a kind of psychological motion inside of them." Graves' 2017 exhibit at The Artist’s Institute at Hunter College tied together with his interests in music and acupuncture, "establishing an energetic connection between music and the natural rhythms of the body."
A 2020-2021 exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, PA entitled Milford Graves: A Mind-Body Deal will showcase "a collection of Graves' hand-painted album covers and posters, idiosyncratic drum sets, multimedia sculptures, photographs, and costumes, with elements from his home, scientific studies, recording ephemera, and archival recordings, as well as space for performance and a reading room."

MONOPOLY DISCOTHEKEN

Foto

Carly Moffa is a young US singer-songwriter whose talent and wholehearted passion for her craft were witnessed by the public at (very) large on American Idol when, after performing one of her own songs to unanimous praise from the judges, Katy Perry described Carly’s vocal style as “a big, beautiful, folky Florence Welch-type voice, which commands a room.”

As a live performer, Carly shares her gift to help uplift others, building her songs from the ground up by layering looped guitars, keyboards, all manner of percussion plus her own vocal harmonies in real time.

Just ahead of Valentine’s Day, she is sharing a poignant cover of ‘Love Hurts’, originally recorded by the Everly Brothers and an all-time classic that has certainly inspired many other voices over the decades and across music genres. More important, it is a song that surely resonates in different ways in February 2021.

“I think love is universally the most powerful vehicle for connection. It is as beautiful as it is painful,” says Carly. “‘Love Hurts’ addresses the gratitude we have in love and the grief we feel when it is lost. Valentine’s Day feels heavy this year and my hope is for this song to help someone feel less alone in a time when many of us are physically by ourselves.”

Originally from New Jersey but now based in Nashville (also the city where country music and pop songwriter Boudleaux Bryant wrote ‘Love Hurts’), Carly has performed to crowds ranging from 30 to 30,000. Her skills also extend beyond music, with one of her poems being featured in ‘I Hope My Voice Doesn’t Skip’, the 2018 second book by best-selling author Alicia Cook.

With further new singles in the offing and other projects in the pipeline, Carly Moffa is just getting started.

(Bron: VRTNWS)

Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys New Album 'Elmore James for President' OUT feb 26th

Powerful, heavy & bluesy !  People say it's the toughest sounding band around. The band with the original, reckless sound hails from New Orleans, LA.  Johnny leads the ensemble and has racked up 13 records, countless festival appearances, over 35 European tours in 15 countries, a feature in a 2013 film as well as recording for the BBC in London, German National Radio in Bremen, and Belgian National Radio in Brussels.

Elmore James (1918-1963) was an American musician that had popularity, deep soul and an energy that makes his music sound fresh today. JMMB’s 13 song new recording keeps that American spirit alive. Powerful, heavy & bluesy !

JMMBs music is a blend of new and old at the same time.  Roots run deep as Johnny spent 16 years (and Smoke 6 years) at the blues' shrine "Babe's & Ricky's Inn" under the tutelage of Laura Mae "Mama" Gross.  She taught them the only color that mattered was blue and encouraged them to develop their own, loose sound. The results are apparent at every show and every recording "Mama's Boys" make.

Shlundee releaset debuut EP 'Wait, What?'

Shlundee ?

Amy werkte samen met o.a.

Winnaars Flanders Folk Awards 2021 bekend:

Richie Albright, the longtime Waylon Jennings drummer, dies at 81. Albright's band, Waymore's Outlaws, confirmed his death Wednesday on social media.
The Waylors, later Waymore's Outlaws, is a country music band, best known as the backing and recording band of country music singer Waylon Jennings. Jennings formed the band in 1961, consisting of Jerry Gropp on the guitar and Richie Albright on the drums after moving to Phoenix, Arizona.
The band earned a local fan base during its appearances on the night club JD's. Reformed in 2008, the group performs on its own with Tommy Townsend as their lead vocalist, with occasional performances as the band for Albright's namesake son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Waylon Albright "Shooter" Jennings. Waylon Jennings was managed at the beginning of his career by Buddy Holly's first manager, 'Hi-Pockets' Duncan. On Duncan's recommendation, Holly hired Jennings to play electric bass for him during his "Winter Dance Party Tour" in 1959.
Now known as Waymore's Outlaws, the band continues today, with Tommy Townsend as lead guitar and vocalist. In 2014, the Outlaws came full circle by playing with Waylon's son and Richie Albright's namesake Waylon Albright "Shooter" Jennings for the first time on tour.

Chicago prog legends DISTRICT 97 will be releasing a new live album called “Screenplay” featuring well over 2 hours of music across 2 CDs on March 26, 2021! The album comprises all of DISTRICT 97’s critically-acclaimed “Screens” album performed live at Europe's prog rock mecca, Boerderij Cultuurpodium, in October 2019. Additionally, the collection boasts a wide variety of additional live material spanning DISTRICT 97’s back catalog and covers ranging from John Lennon to Yes.

Also included is a rousing unreleased live performance of “21st Century Schizoid Man” featuring King Crimson/Asia/UK legend John Wetton, as well as collaborations with other artists such as Dave Kerzner and Fernando Perdomo. Plus, there are two secret “encore” performances.

As a special bonus, a brand new song recorded in quarantine called “Divided We Fall” is included on the new album!

“The world has changed in ways we never could have foreseen since we released Screens in October 2019. Touring has been rendered impossible, and thus we have been unable to share this music live with many of our wonderful fans. Before covid-19 struck, we embarked on our UK & European Screening Tour. The centerpiece of each night was Screens performed live in its entirety. Fortunately, our show at Holland’s legendary Boerderij Cultuurpodium was beautifully recorded, and we are thrilled to present it now as part of ‘Screenplay.’ There’s much more to this collection though: live performances of other D97 favorites, tributes to our musical icons, a BRAND NEW SONG recorded in quarantine, and even a couple ‘encores’ (if you applaud long enough). Until we can be physically together again, please join us for ‘Screenplay’” - Jonathan Schang

“Since I joined this band in 2008, one consistent bit of feedback I’ve received is that our live shows capture our essence as a band in ways that studio albums are not as able to, given the visual component of seeing us perform live mixed with the spontaneous musical ideas bouncing around on stage. We have been diligent about recording our live shows over the years and have been sitting on a mountain of live performances that we cannot wait to share with the rest of the word. Each song is an organism unto itself and in each performance we bring with us the culmination of the tour thus far and lessons learned about each song in the process. We throw in tiny moments to keep each other on our toes, try new interpretations based on our current emotional state and communicate on stage in ways that are seemingly mystical at times. Being a band for as long as we have creates a certain freedom to branch out on our respective ledges and see what happens when we put a twist on the familiar. I believe that our fans are in for a treat with ‘Screenplay,’ both for the live performances and the brand new song we recorded remotely as the pandemic rendered us isolated from one another.” - Leslie Hunt

DISTRICT 97 is undoubtedly the most musically adventurous rock band in the world to feature an American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist. Since 2008, this quintet from Chicago has melded an adventurous, uncompromising instrumental prowess with the look, sound, and stage presence of vocalist Leslie Hunt. Through world tours and a stream of studio and live releases, the band has garnered a worldwide fanbase; collaborating with iconic singer/bassist John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia, UK) and drawing praise from Bill Bruford (drummer of Yes/King Crimson/Genesis), Mike Portnoy (drummer of Dream Theater/Transatlantic) and other rock luminaries along the way.

DISTRICT 97 rehearses doggedly to refine their compositions, ensemble-playing, and stage presentation; their standards for excellence have only grown more rigorous with the passage of time. Their latest album “Screens” (released October 2019) and its accompanying live shows set a high watermark of composition and musicianship.

The covid-19 pandemic has not stopped the band from innovating. Their Virtual Screening Tour and the stunning “Ghost Girl” animated short film have kept them at the top of the current prog rock heap. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=822-tra5DA4
