Suikerrock vindt plaats van vrijdag 4 t/m zondag 6 augustus 2023 op het Bietenplein aan de Suikerraffinaderij in Tienen en heeft naast (inter)nationale kleppers op drie podia ook heel wat randanimatie te bieden.
De line-up wordt snel aangevuld.

“Rides On” is het derde album voor deze band woonachtig in de Catskills-area, New York Upstate. Het bevat 13 songs met uptempo nerdy indie pop songs, stripped down alt country tracks en lekkere bluesy, psychedelic en soulvolle twangy en swampy (garage) rock ’n roll stampertjes. Het zevental kent zijn jaren 60 en 70 klassiekers, maar geeft er een eigentijdse pakkende draai aan. Voor liefhebbers van The Rolling Stones (Sticky Fingers-era), Wilco, The Band, DeWolff, The Velvet Underground, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Weezer, The Byrds, Drive-By Truckers, Little Feat en Black Lips.

​For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, The Districts, Ron Gallo, Black Lips, The Lemonheads and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, The Great Escape, Best Kept Secret, Newport Folk Festival and Shaky Knees became the norm. In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, “Midnight Manor”, which debuted at #1 on the US Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third new album, they couldn’t lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record.
Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they’d saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along. When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems; Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills NY-area to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band’s third album, “Rides On”. Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce “Rides On” themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 13 songs.
“Rides On”, the band confidently says, is their best record. It’s also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band’s ideas to blossom, everyone’s voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe. The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times”, the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out Your Love”, the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots”, which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for - and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band’s sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John’s “Somebody Tryin' To Hoodoo Me”. It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician’s format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut. The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They’re excited to begin the next chapter of their career. At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere.

With a new approach to a country classic, Country Rockabilly Recording Artist Brendon Mac releases his arrangement of Ring of Fire, a 1963 hit from the Man in Black, Mr. Johnny Cash. Marking the 60th Anniversary of this hit song, Brendon’s version is available on all streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, etc. 
 
With Brendon’s interpretation of this song, he is attracting fans from all over. “Johnny Cash is my country music idol and main musical influence,” says Brendon. “I wanted to honor him with this and showcase that country music is still country music.” This song was produced by renowned Gary Carter who, not only has worked as music director for one of country music’s top female artists, Faith Hill, he has also been instrumental in helping the talents of the late Jeff Carson and Daryle Singletary, as well as Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Pam Tillis, Wade Hayes, Rhett Akins, Randy Travis, Marty Stuart, Connie Smith and more. The song, which was recorded at East Iris studios in Nashville, features an all-star musician lineup including Kenny Vaughan on rhythm guitar, Danny Parks on lead guitar, Chris Scruggs on upright bass, Chad Cromwell on drums and Mike Rojas on keys and B3. “It takes a true team to bring music to life. I’m honored to have worked with them.”

The cutting-edge song blends blues with rap to address racial injustice, while the video intercuts more than 50 years of protest footage with eye-opening evidence showing why the struggle must carry on today. Jethro Tull recently announced the release of their 23rd studio album, ‘RökFlöte’, on the 21st April 2023 via InsideOutMusic. Following 2022’s ‘The Zealot Gene’, the band's first album in two decades, Ian Anderson and the band are returning with a 12-track record based on the characters and roles of some of the principle gods of the old Norse paganism, and at the same time exploring the ‘RökFlöte’ - rock flute - which Jethro Tull has made iconic. 

Today the band are pleased to launch the second single from the album, ‘The Navigators’. Appearing as a special single edit version, mixed by Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief), you can watch the video (created by Christian Rios) HERE.  

The lyrics for this track explored the Norse god Njord, who was the god of wealth, fertility, the sea and seafaring.

​Ian explains the album’s title & theme in more detail: “The title of this offering went through a little change or two along the way. I started with the idea of a predominantly instrumental album for rock flute - as in rock music. When the subject material of the album presented itself, I was drawn to the term Ragnarök from Norse mythology - their version of apocalyptic end times or Biblical Armageddon. The "final showdown" scenario is ubiquitous and inherent in Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, for example. Ragnarök translates as “destiny of the Gods”, the rök part meaning destiny, course, direction. With umlaut firmly in place, courtesy of the Germanic origins of Old Norse, Flute became Flöte in keeping with the spelling. With me so far? I just can't miss the glorious opportunity for a good and legitimate umlaut.”

Jethro Tull continue live dates this year, with shows in mainland Europe, as well as a newly announced headline date in London on the 23rd May to celebrate the new album release. Two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Graham Nash returns with his first studio album of new material in seven years, titled. NOW, due May 19 on BMG.  Now is produced by Nash and longtime touring keyboardist Todd Caldwell.

​Nash’s most recent album, Graham Nash: Live, is out now via Proper Records to critical acclaim from NPR’s “Here & Now,” Stereogum, Consequence, Forbes, American Songwriter, Relix and more. The record features Nash performing his first two critically acclaimed solo albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales,in their entirety, recorded on tour in the Northeastern U.S. in September 2019. 

 
GRAHAM NASH
In addition to his two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions (with Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Hollies), Nash is a two time inductee to the Songwriters Hall of Fame—as a solo artist and with CSN—and a Grammy Award winner. Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his multifaceted career stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half century.

Nash’s remarkable body of work began the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68. His contributions to Crosby, Stills & Nash and Déjà Vu are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs” and “Lady of the Island” from the former and “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” from the latter. Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971 with two albums further showcasing the depths of his abilities as a singer and songwriter, yielding “Chicago/We Can Change the World,” “Military Madness,” “I Used To Be A King” and “Simple Man.”
 
His passionate voice has long been heard in support of peace and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In September 2013, Nash released his long-awaited autobiography Wild Tales, which landed him on The New York Times Best Sellers list. In recognition of his contributions as a musician and philanthropist, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. While continually building his musical legacy, Nash is also a renowned photographer and visual artist whose work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. Most recently Nash released A Life In Focus: The Photography Of Graham Nash (via Insight Editions), in which he reflects on more than fifty years of an extraordinary life in an extensive collection of personal photographs and artistic stills.

6 covers and 1 new original, all recorded live.
The band recorded two of their biggest live shows of 2022; mainstage Culemborg Blues (28.08.22) and a theatre show at Better Get Hit Festival (10.09.22). The best of both worlds made the cut:
the ecstatic energy from the festival stage as well as the honest focus from a theatre hall.

Tijdens de persconferentie op de Bijlokesite deed organisator Greenhouse Talent de plannen voor Gent Jazz 2023 uit de doeken. De 22ste editie van het festival zal plaatsvinden tussen 5 en 15 juli en net als voorgaande jaren de prachtige, historische Bijlokesite als uitvalsbasis hebben. De organisatie kondigde ook de eerste twaalf namen aan, met als kleppers Norah Jones en Mavis Staples, opkomend talent Laufey, jazzsensatie Gregory Porter en Gentse artiesten Lara Rosseel, Isolde Lasoen en Dishwasher_.

Een feest, dat moet Gent Jazz 2023 vooral worden. Met gepaste trots gaf Pascal Van De Velde (Greenhouse Talent) vandaag tekst en uitleg bij de 22ste editie van het festival. De organisator zet in op een kwalitatieve line-up met de best mogelijke ervaring voor het publiek. De basis voor die ervaring is de prachtige Bijlokesite. De groene long met historische gebouwen zal tussen 5 en 15 juli net als de voorbije jaren het kenmerkend kader bieden aan Gent Jazz. Geert Riem (directeur Muziekcentrum De Bijloke) is erg blij met de verderzetting van de samenwerking. Naast het hoofdpodium keert ook de Garden Stage - de gezellige broedplaats voor opkomend talent en experiment - terug. Ook Gentse schepen van cultuur Sami Souguir sprak zijn vertrouwen en blijdschap uit over de plannen van Greenhouse Talent.

Met twaalf klinkende namen loste de organisatie ook een eerste deel van de line-up. Op 5 juli openen we feestelijk met de warme soul-jazz bariton Gregory Porter, die na vier jaar terugkeert naar het festival. De volgende dag bepaalt Snarky Puppy het ritme met hun mix van instrumentale jazz, rock en funk. Stevig opwarmen doen we met Dishwasher_, de winnaar van Jong Jazztalent Gent 2022. Op 7 juli gaat de gevierde bluesgitarist Joe Bonamassa voor niet minder dan a night to remember, iets waar de legendarische bassist Marcus Miller - die de kneepjes van het vak bij Miles Davis leerde maar zowat met iedereen samenwerkte - zeker ook zijn steentje toe zal bijdragen.

Na passages in 2010 en 2017 staat Norah Jones op 8 juli opnieuw op Gent Jazz. Reden genoeg; de Amerikaanse met kenmerkende warme stem vierde vorig jaar de twintigste verjaardag van haar debuut ‘Come Away With Me’. Daarnaast komt het drieëntachtigjarige gospel-, blues- en burgerrechtenicoon Mavis Staples haar recente plaat met The Band-drummer Levon Helm voorstellen die door critici als een van haar allerbeste werd onthaald. Aan het andere uiterste is er Laufey, een drieëntwintigjarige IJslandse multi-instrumentaliste die vergeleken wordt met Chet Baker en Billie Eilish tot haar fans kan rekenen.

Headliner van 11 juli: ZAZ! Na drie wereldtournees en een periode van herbronning is de Française helemaal terug met ‘Isa’. Die persoonlijke plaat kwam dan wel tot stand in de eenzaamheid van de lockdown, met haar optredens wil ZAZ vooral het samenzijn vieren. Gentse drummer en zangeres Isolde Lasoen maakt het feest compleet met haar nieuwste plaat ‘Oh Dear’. 14 juli wordt een echte jazzdag met Branford Marsalis Quartet. Vertrekkend vanuit de wortels exploreert het viertal al meer dan dertig jaar op compromisloze en gedurfde wijze de full scope van jazz. De dag deint verder op de verhalende klanken van ‘ARK’, het ethnic acoustic jazz-project van stadscomponiste Lara Rosseel.

 
Daarnaast zet Gent Jazz in 2023 met ‘Jong Jazztalent Gent’ een belangrijke traditie verder. Via de wedstrijd investeert het festival in de ontwikkeling en stimulatie van jonge jazzmusici van over heel het land en bieden ze de laureaten financiële ondersteuning om een droomproject te realiseren.

 
Deze eerste aankondiging wordt binnenkort aangevuld met heel wat (inter)nationale gevestigde waarden, ontdekkingen én lokaal talent.

​R&B singer Chuck Jackson, who placed nearly 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the 1960s, died on Feb. 16, 2023. Best known for his 1962 hit “Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird),” which reached #2 on the trade magazine’s R&B chart and #23 on the Hot 100, Jackson was 85.

Neither the cause nor place of death have yet been revealed. Jackson’s granddaughter, Krystina, stated on Facebook that Jackson passed in Georgia, and Ady Croasdell of England’s Ace/Kent Records, which has reissued a number of Jackson’s recordings, has also confirmed Jackson’s death.

“Any Day Now” was co-written by Burt Bacharach (who passed on Feb. 8, 2023) and Bob Hilliard. Jackson’s other popular hits included “I Don’t Want to Cry,” his first chart placement, from 1961 (#5 R&B); “I Keep Forgettin’,” a 1962 hit written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller; and “Something You Got,” a duet with Maxine Brown that peaked at #10 on the R&B chart.

Jackson was born July 22, 1937, in Winston-Salem, N.C., spent his boyhood in Latta, S.C., then settled in Pittsburgh, Pa., at age 13.
Jackson first came to attention as a member of the doo-wop group the Dell-Vikings, then signed as a solo artist to Wand Records, a subsidiary of Scepter Records. “I Don’t Want to Cry,” co-written by Jackson with songwriter-producer Luther Dixon, became the first of a solid string of singles to chart into late in the decade. At the end of the ’60s, Jackson signed with Motown Records, but the affiliation only produced two singles that made the R&B chart and barely dented the Hot 100. He continued to release singles on ABC, All Platinum and EMI America (the last of which came in 1980) before his run of chart singles ended.

Jackson’s records have remained popular as part of the “Northern Soul” scene (American soul records that are particularly popular in the U.K.). In 1998, Jackson recorded a duet with former Scepter labelmate Dionne Warwick, “If I Let Myself Go,” which saw some radio airplay but did not become successful. He also released more than 20 albums, none of which charted in Billboard.

​Songs originally made famous by Jackson were later covered by such artists as David Bowie, Michael McDonald and Ronnie Milsap. Jackson was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

Van het wereldwijd zeer populaire Mexicaanse (acoustische) gitaar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela, bestaande uit Rodrigo Sanchez en Gabriela Quintero, verschijnt hun nieuw album “In Between Thoughts… A New World”. Het duo bracht al vijf studio-albums uit, beginnende met “Re-Foc” uit 2002, en hun laatste worp “Mettavolution” won er in 2020 een Grammy Award als ‘Best Contemporary Instrumental Album’ mee. Het 7 tracks tellende album werd geproduceerd door Dave Sardy, bevatte 6 eigen composities, maar werd het meest bekend door de cover-versie van Pink Floyd’s “Echoes”. Ook ontvingen ze begin vorig jaar een Grammy nominatie voor hun versie van “The Struggle Within” (afkomstig van het Metallica tribute-album “The Metallica Blacklist” als ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’. Om deze cover-traditie in ere te houden, en om voor de vele fans de lange wachttijd op eigen nieuw werk wat te verzachten, bracht het duo afgelopen najaar ook twee verse ‘renditions’ van klassiekers als digitale singles uit; in dit geval Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Symphony No. 25 In G Minor, K. 183, First Movement” en Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes”.

Hun grote doorbraak was alweer ruim 10 jaar geleden toen ze met Hans Zimmer de soundtrack schreven van de mega-populaire film “Pirates Of The Caribbean”. Dit zorgde onder meer voor ‘worldwide headline shows at legendary venues as the Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks (Colorado), Radio City Music Hall (New York), Royal Albert Hall (London) and Le Zenith (Paris). They even performed at the White House with Beyonce in the Obama-era’.

De muziek van Rodrigo Y Gabriela is een dynamische mengeling van Latin, world, klassieke muziek, folk en instrumentale gitaar rock; ‘the music is built on harnessing the flash, power and speed of rock and metal, and filtering it through the passion, soul, technique and discipline of nuevo flamenco. De eerste single “Descending To Nowhere” is de definitieve versie van enkele korte ‘Stages’, die eind vorig jaar via prachtige video-appetizers al als voorproefjes op het nieuwe album op de mensheid werden losgelaten. De nieuwe songs werden opgenomen en ‘self-produced’ in hun eigen studio in Ixtapa en ontstonden ‘from a transformative period of spiritual awakening and reading a lot of Hindu philosophy, and a subsequent burst of unfettered creativity; the non-dualism notion of a single, infinite and indivisible reality, whose nature is pure consciousness, from which all objects and selves derive their apparantly independent existence’. Hun nieuwe ‘journey of the mind’-album borduurt voort op de bekende Rodrigo Y Gabriela sound, maar het virtuose, innovatieve en spirituele gitaar duo barst van het zelfvertrouwen en het cinematische aspect is nog verder uitgebouwd, met moderne ‘action-packed’ electronische en orkestrale elementen!

​“The video is based on a specific chapter/segment of a storyline written by Rodrigo Y Gabriela where a character has a spiritual journey towards non-dualism”, says director Olallo Rubio. “So this video is just a small part of a larger story. They always imagined this world in animation, but we thought it’d be conceptually interesting to start in this dark, bleak, live action world and then enter the animated universe in color. I called artists Andy Butler (British) and Pogo (Mexican), with whom I worked before on a documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky (the Chilean multi-disciplinary artist) because I knew they’d understand the spiritual/surreal concept we were developing”.

Op maandag 25 september speelt de Braziliaanse componist en zanger Caetano Veloso in Bozar in Brussel waar hij zijn nieuwste album "Meu Coco" voorstelt, naast zijn hits. Veloso’s doorwinterde stem, warme klanken en live band zorgen ongetwijfeld voor een heerlijke Indian Summer.

Veloso is wellicht de populairste en meest invloedrijke componist en zanger uit Brazilië. Eind jaren 60 vluchtte hij, net zoals boezemvriend Gilberto Gil, naar Londen. Deze twee uithangborden van het immens populaire Tropicalismo traden vaak samen op. Met hun mix van avant-garde en een meer traditionele Braziliaanse sound drukten ze een onuitwisbare stempel op de Europese en Zuid-Amerikaanse muziek. Vanaf de jaren 80 stijgt Veloso’s populariteit ook buiten Brazilië. In 2004 brengt de Braziliaan "A Foreign Sound” uit, zijn eerste volledig Engelstalige album, met covers en nieuwe interpretaties van onder andere Cole Porter, Bob Dylan en Nirvana.
 
Veloso is een icoon in de muziekwereld. Sommigen beschouwen hem zelfs als een van de beste songwriters van de 20e eeuw, vergeleken met namen als Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, John Lennon en Paul McCartney. Naast meer dan vijftig solo- en live albums (waaronder «Live at Carnegie Hall» met David Byrne van Talking Heads), componeert hij ook vaak filmmuziek zoals voor "Hable con Ella” van Pedro Almodovar of "Frida” van Julie Taylor. Gedurende z’n lange carrière sleepte hij tal van prijzen in de wacht, waaronder dertien (Latin) Grammy Awards en twee Grammy Awards voor 'Beste Album Wereldmuziek'.

Na bijna een decennia vol ongeduld wachten, releasete Caetano Veloso in 2021 zijn gloednieuwe album "Meu Coco” . Hierin gunt hij ons een blik in zijn hart én hoofd en laat hij zien hoe zijn brein werkt tijdens het creëren van nummers: «Het is negen jaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst een album met nieuwe nummers heb uitgebracht. Eind 2019 was er dan het verlangen om solo nieuw materiaal op te nemen. Het begon met een gitaarritme dat, indien uitgevoerd zoals ik droomde, zou klinken voor elk publiek waar ook ter wereld. De muzikale legende heeft de reputatie om de zomer met zich mee te brengen en iedereen te laten bewegen. Zet je schrap voor een avond losgaan op de Braziliaanse ritmes van Caetano Veloso & full band! 

Ruim een decennium na ‘Following Sea’ loste dEUS, de Antwerpse rockband rond Tom Barman, met ‘How To Replace It’ zijn negende studioalbum. De langspeler telt twaalf tracks. Tom Barman, Mauro Pawlowski, Alan Gevaert, Klaas Janzoons en drummer Stéphane Misseghers hebben al een Europese tournee aangekondigd naar aanleiding van de release. Hier is een greep uit de vele nationale en internationale recensies.

“Alleen al de titeltrack van ‘How To Replace It’ bewijst dat de band rond Tom Barman nog steeds tot het beste behoort wat dit land op muzikaal vlak te bieden heeft”, zo opent Het Belang Van Limburg zijn lofzang. “Fijn om te kunnen melden dat dEUS een kleine dertig jaar na het baanbrekende debuut ‘Worst Case Scenario’ nog steeds spannend, verrassend en relevant uit de hoek weet te komen.”
“Na de vorige pauze duurde het drie platen voor dEUS weer piekte met ‘Keep You Close’, maar in dit geval is het er meteen stevig op. (…) Het klinkt direct typisch dEUS: elke song heeft een goed geraamte, dat dan ingekleurd wordt met wat maar voorhanden is, tot castag­netten, een mandoline en zelfs een fadogitaar toe”, gaat de krant verder.

Allersterkste plaat sinds de eeuwwisseling
Vrijwel alle nationale media zijn unaniem lovend. “Magnifiek!”, concludeert Humo. “‘How To Replace It’ (de song) is met paukenslag, trompet, hoorn, strijkers (en met Tom Barman die aan het eind ‘Now break it up!’ roept) hun beste opener sinds ‘Pocket Revolution’ begon met ‘Bad Timing'.”
“Een sterk werkstukje dat de beste karakteristieken van de groep elegant tegen het licht houdt”, opent muziekjournalist Gunther Van Assche van De Morgen zijn recensie. “De plaat is amper vijf minuten ver en je hangt al onverbiddelijk in de touwen. Bombastisch? Hell yeah. Maar de repeatknop lonkt evengoed.” Van Assche sluit dan ook af met dezelfde vaststelling als zijn concullega’s: “Hun allersterkste plaat sinds de eeuwwisseling.”
De Tijd heeft het vooral over wat de band – wiens hoogdagen lang achter de rug liggen – nog te bieden heeft aan “jonge muziekliefhebbers die massaal ge-autotunede hiphop, R&B- en pophits streamen en de selfiecultuur omarmen”. De authenticiteit en het dwarse DNA van de band is lovenswaardig, zo klinkt het, maar is dEUS niet vooral een nostalgietrip voor boomers geworden, in een wereld die geregeerd wordt door big tech en social media? Niet helemaal, besluit De Tijd: “Het nieuwe album zal in de eerste plaats generatiegenoten aanspreken, toch raden we ook millennials en Gen Z'ers aan ‘How To Replace It' een kans te geven.” Wat de plaat zelf betreft, is de teneur van de financieel-economische krant positief: “‘How To Replace It' combineert de rauwheid van korte studiojams met een langer schaafproces. Dat levert intense en gesofisticeerde songs op.”
Cultuurmagazine Focus Knack ten slotte is zowat het enige Belgische medium dat iets gematigder klinkt in zijn oordeel: “Het omslachtige ‘Le Blues Polaire’ beklijft weinig”, laat Kurt Blondeel een kritische noot vallen. “Al bij al geen daverende, wel een degelijke dEUS”, is de eindconclusie.

Grootse groeidiamant
Ook bij de internationale vakpers is de teneur overwegend positief. Het Britse muziekmagazine Clash ziet in “één van de eerste Belgische rockbands die echt internationaal doorbrak” een “progressieve kijk op gitaarmuziek zonder grenzen”.  “Op 'How To Replace It', een plaat die in alle opzichten groots aanvoelt, ziet dEUS zijn verleden onder ogen en weigert zich erdoor te laten insluiten.”
De Duitse uitgave van muziekblad Rolling Stone geeft het album vier sterren: “Chapeau!”, klinkt het. De Franse uitgave van het blad geeft een halve sterretje minder, terwijl het Nederlandse muziektijdschrift OOR de plaat omschrijft als “een nieuw meesterwerk” en “een groeidiamant van jewelste”. Hun conclusie: “dEUS is terug en blijkt in topvorm.”

‘How To Replace It’ van is nu uit. De band speelt op 14, 15, 16 en 17 maart in de Brusselse Ancienne Belgique. Op 25 juni speelt dEUS op Live is Live en op 15 juli op Dour. (bron Pickx)

De country-folk singer songwriter Jaimee Harris heeft vandaag haar nieuwe album Boomerang Town uitgebracht via Thirty Tigers. Boomerang Town markeert een gedurfde stap voorwaarts voor Harris en is een ode aan Harris' hometown. 
 
De in Texas geboren singer-songwriter Harris werd vierde haar dertigste verjaardag tijdens één van de vreemdste en meest tumultueuze periodes in de (Amerikaanse) geschiedenis. Tijdens de lockdown keek ze met een nostalgische blik naar jeugd, haar geboorteplaats en familie en de stempel die zij hebben achter gelaten op haar. Desondanks is Boomerang Town alleen nostalgisch in de zin dat het verlangen naar huis een verlangen is om terug te keren naar het verleden en oude wonden te helen.
 


​Naast de persoonlijke onderwerpen waaruit Harris haar inspiratie vond voor Boomerang Town, begon in 2016 het idee al te broeien vanwege de maatschappelijke veranderingen, die ze beschrijft als een tijd van groot verlies voor velen in de Americana-gemeenschap, waarbij de songwriter verschillende muzikanten uit haar omgeving verloor. De verschuiving in het politieke landschap van het land had een nieuw niveau van polarisatie ingeluid. Door deze sociale, persoonlijke en politieke stromingen werd het album geboren.

Triggerfinger, Jack Johnson en Simply Red naast Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band op TW Classic 2023

Hoog tijd om de volledige line-up van TW Classic 2023 voor te stellen! Ook Triggerfinger, Jack Johnson en Simply Red komen op 18 juni naar het Festivalpark in Werchter. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band headlinen het festival. ​

TW Classic 2023 zal flink rockend geopend worden door Triggerfinger (16:00-16:55). Dat zal voor het eerst zonder bassist Paul Van Bruystegem zijn die de groep na 22 geweldige jaren verlaat. Op 10 juni sluit Triggerfinger het hoofdstuk met Monsieur Paul feestelijk af in de Brusselse Ancienne Belgique. Op TW Classic krijgen Ruben Block en Mario Goossens het gezelschap van Geoffrey Burton op bas.
 
Optredens van Jack Johnson (17:40-18:55) in ons land zijn eerder zeldzaam. ​ Nochtans is de singer-songwriter al vele jaren een wereldwijd begrip. In zijn Mango Tree studio op Hawaï, die volledig op zonne-energie draait, ​ blikt hij de beste surf sounds in. Op zijn jongste album ‘Meet The Moonlight’ (2022) gaat hij op zoek naar klein geluk in moeilijke tijden.

​Simply Red (19:50-21:05) is een klassieker pur sang. Mick Hucknall is even temperamentvol als zijn rode haardos. In zijn jonge jaren verzamelt hij zeldzame soulplaatjes en dweept hij met jazz en reggae. Zijn rasperige stem blijkt perfect te passen bij dat repertoire. Hucknall heeft wereldwijd 50 miljoen platen verkocht en iedereen kan minstens 10 nummers meebrullen.
 
De nieuwe wereldtournee van Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band (22:00-0:30) is gestart. Op de setlists van de eerste concerten: de hits, fan- en band favorieten, een selectie uit het recente ‘Only the strong survive’. De shows zijn nog steeds van lange duur, het speelplezier ongebreideld. Springsteen en co zijn in topconditie.

Het intieme tweedaagse zomerfestival VESTROCK ligt zeer centraal en is eenvoudig te bereiken voor zowel Nederlanders als voor Belgen. Dit jaarlijks populairder wordende evenement biedt een weekend weg met live rock-, pop- en dance acts; met exclusieve optredens op diverse locaties. ​Indiana blues-rock outfit The Cold Stares have announced ‘Voices,’ their new full-length album, out March 10th via Mascot Records. Recorded almost entirely over the course of just two days with producer/engineer/mixer Mark Needham (Taj Mahal, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon, Fleetwood Mac), the album stands as the band’s most mature, eclectic collection yet, balancing gritty muscle and tender emotion in equal measure. To celebrate the announcement, the band has unveiled an official music video for the album’s lead single “The Joy,” which draws from Pink Floyd as it revels in the happiness that comes with finding your true soulmate. 

For the past ten years, The Cold Stares have toured the world relentlessly as a duo, blowing away audiences across the US and Europe with a fierce, blistering live show that belied their bare bones, guitar-and-drums setup. Now, the band is embracing a whole new kind of chemistry as they launch their next chapter, adding a third member and channeling the classic power trio sound they grew up on with their explosive new album. “The chains were off when we made this record,” says Tapp. “Suddenly, all the parameters that had dictated what we could and couldn’t do just disappeared and we were free to create whatever sound we wanted.”
 
That sense of total artistic liberation lies at the heart of Voices, which pushes The Cold Stares’ signature mix of blues, southern, and hard rock to bold new heights. It would have been easy for Tapp and drummer Brian Mullins to simply crank the volume here, but instead they make the most of bassist Bryce Klueh’s arrival by getting more nuanced and adventurous in their approach, chasing a raw, unvarnished sound that manages to feel both vintage and modern all at once. Add it all up and you’ve got a gutsy, cinematic record that’s as honest as it is exhilarating, a high-octane dose of unadulterated rock and roll that tips its cap to everything from Cream to Led Zeppelin as it reckons with love and loss, sin and redemption, hope and regret.

Blues Image rides again with a new album “Next Voyage” forthcoming and tour. The album features original guitarist and vocalist Mike Pinera, and includes the greatest songs from his history with Blues Image and Iron Butterfly, revisited with orchestra and horn section.
 
Produced by Michael Franklin, who produced Jon Anderson “1000 Hands part One” and Robby Steinhardt “Not in Kansas Anymore.” In Franklin’s tradition of special guests, the album features Pat Travers, Jonathan Cain from Journey, Charlie DeChant, and others. Also, Michael and Tim Franklin have toured as members of Blues Image for 30 years.  
 
Blues Image is an American Blues Rock band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1966 by singer-guitarist Mike Pinera. Blues Image became the house band at the club Thee Image, which featured bands like Cream, Grateful Dead, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. The band moved to Los Angeles and signed with Atco Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in February 1969. Their second album, “Open” (April 1970), included the hit single “Ride Captain Ride.” Written by Pinera and Skip Konte, the song has been used in many films. Pinera left the band to join Iron Butterfly in the fall of 1969.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, country crooner Adam Hood’s latest release – a love song called “You Love Me Like That” – is available everywhere now! Co-written with country singer and songwriter Sean McConnell and inspired by Hood’s longtime wife, Britni, the track showcases the authentic and uncomplicated writing that has solidified Hood’s status as one of music’s most revered songwriters, with a romantic feel that is perfect for sharing with someone you admire. The cover art is another personal touch and features photos from Adam and Britni's wedding day along with vintage pictures of their respective families. Hood says, “I wrote this with Sean McConnell back in 2016. He was sitting at the piano in the writer’s room when I got there. He played the first few lines and I fell right in. It felt like the song wrote itself. The lines just came. It’s what you hope for every time you sit down with an idea, but it rarely actually happens. It’s almost like you’re there to write down a song that’s ‘given’ to you. A song that’s bigger than you.”

He continues, “It’s also very special that such a personal song can resonate with others so well. There are quite a few songs written about being married to a ‘music man,’ but ask my wife and I bet she’ll tell you that one more song spoken with a little sincerity is very welcome! There’s so much that goes unseen and unsaid in our day-to-day lives and I’m thankful to have a song to remind me of what REALLY matters when things get overwhelming. I think that’s the sentiment that I see resonate with others when I play this song. Trials and troubles are NOT specific to the music world, but there’s power in saying ‘I am not alone.’ Who doesn’t want to be loved unconditionally for exactly what and who they are?”

This new song comes on the heels of Hood’s critically-acclaimed sixth studio album, Bad Days Better, which was released late last year. Saving Country Music called the album "some of the best songs of his career." Thanks to the success of Bad Days Better, along with his storied success through the years, Hood made his Grand Ole Opry debut in October and will be returning on February 24. About Adam Hood
Frontman. Behind-the-scenes songwriter. For more than 2 decades, Adam Hood has left his mark onstage and in the writing room, carving out a southern sound that mixes soul, country, and American roots music into the same package. It's a sound that began to take shape in Opelika, Alabama. Raised by working-class parents, Hood started playing hometown shows as a 16 year-old, landing a weekly residency at a local restaurant. He'd perform there every Friday and Saturday night, filling his set list with songs by John Hiatt, Steve Warner, Hank Williams Jr, and Vince Gill. As the years progressed, the gigs continued — not only in Alabama, but across the entire country, where Hood still plays around 100 shows annually. These days, though, he's no longer putting his own stamp on the songs of chart-topping country stars. Instead, many of those acts are playing his music. Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Travis Tritt, Riley Green, Whiskey Myers, Anderson East, Frankie Ballard, Josh Abbott Band, Lee Ann Womack, and Brent Cobb are among the dozens of artists who've recorded Hood's songs. An in-demand songwriter, while still maintaining a busy schedule of tour dates in support of his third solo release, Welcome to the Big World and two years later, he continues the balancing act with his album, Somewhere in Between. In 2022, Hood released his critically-acclaimed sixth studio album, Bad Days Better, recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia with the help of members of Blackberry Smoke, and Brent Cobb in the producer's chair. "It's southern music," he says, "That's what it represents: the soulful side of southern music, the country side of southern music, the genuineness of southern culture, and the way I grew up. One of the t-shirts I sell at every show simply says ‘Southern songs’ and that's a good summary of what I do. It's what I've always done."
