​Early Birds Festival zal volgens De Roma focussen op "nieuwe muziek uit verschillende genres". Het publiek mag zich zowel aan r&b, afrobeats, soul en pop verwachten. Er wordt gemikt op jong, opkomend talent. Ook qua publiek denkt De Roma vooral aan jonge muziekliefhebbers die de topartiesten van morgen willen ontdekken. Een deel van de optredens zal plaatsvinden in het aanpalende AMOR, waar De Roma op concertavonden regelmatig een restaurantformule aanbiedt.

"Het is de allereerste keer dat we een multi-stage event organiseren in De Roma en AMOR", zegt De Roma-programmator Isy Baeyens. "Er zullen tal van artiesten op het podium staan die stuk voor stuk de waarden verkondigen die we als Borgerhoutse zaal en organisatie willen uitstralen: inclusiviteit, diversiteit, creativiteit én passie voor muziek."

De volledige affiche wordt bekendgemaakt, maar De Roma laat alvast weten dat de Nigeriaanse zangeres Fave, de Nederlandse singer-songwriter Latanya Alberto, en de Belgisch-Congolese multidisciplinaire artieste Reinel Bakole van de partij zullen zijn.

Een eerste lading - goedkopere - tickets gaat op woensdag 29 maart om 10 uur in voorverkoop op www.deroma.be.

​Met Daan en Selah Sue voegt Festival Dranouter twee Belgische artiesten toe aan zijn line-up. Die laatste is te zien op zondag 6 augustus. Daan speelt op vrijdag 4 augustus. Ook de internetsensatie Lucky Chops komt naar Dranouter met eigen nummers en brassband-covers. Festivalgangers kunnen de band op vrijdag 4 augustus ontdekken.

Nieuw is dat Festival Dranouter dit jaar ook een showcasefestival wordt. De organisatie nodigt een selectie van zowel Vlaamse als Britse zaal- en festivalprogrammatoren uit, om folkbands en nieuw talent in het programma te ontdekken. Vrijdag werden er dan ook Vlaamse rootsbands en jong talent aan de line-up toegevoegd met Naragonia Quartet, Snaarmaarwaar, Vincent Coomans, Broes, Laïs, Loogaroo Quartet, Omar Dahl en Ão.

"Met de nieuwe namen die vandaag worden aangekondigd krijgt de line-up verder vorm, met het beste uit folkland en toppers uit binnen- en buitenland. Op de line-up staan nu al onder andere Bazart, Warhaus, Daan, Selah Sue, Merol, Laïs, Lucky Chops, Jungle By Night. Binnenkort volgt nog meer lekkers voor je oren", klinkt het bij de organisatie.

Het Noorse ‘stripped down jazz, mystical folk & atmospheric indie pop’ duo Picidae laat 7 jaar na hun debuut-album “It’s Another Wor d” eindelijk weer eens van zich horen. Met Sigrun Tara Overland als zangeres en op lier, autoharp en gitaar, en Eirik Dorsdal op trompet en ook kalimba, synths en achtergrondzang, toont Picidae zich nog steeds als een prachtig ingetogen duo, met een gevoelige, melancholische, dromerige en breekbare sound. Contrabassist Jo Berger Myhre vult als gast-muzikant op een aantal songs wat gaatjes fraai in en op de track “A Stray Labyrinth” wordt zelfs samengewerkt met het meest noordelijke symphonische orkest: The Arctic Philharmonic.

​Picidae is a stripped down jazz, mystical folk & atmospheric indie pop duo which delivers low‐key magical tones. The duo consists of Sigrun Tara Overland on vocals, lyre, autoharp and guitars, and Eirik Dorsdal on trumpet, electronics, kalimba and vocals. Picidae’s distinctive character can be found in the special sound combinations: the original instrument lyre and other stringed instruments are combined with a trumpet that is taken apart and put back together in unexpected ways, as well as synths and other electronics. Picidae works within a style of music that draws inspiration from both jazz and singer-songwriter, but the music has also elements of pop and folk/world. Picidae have played concerts in Norway, Sweden and Italy in often unique places such as mausoleums, old factories and bunkers, as well as galleries, churches, festivals and clubs. The duo has also already been on four Japan tours.
 
On their second album “A Stray Labyrinth” they´ve really played in on their oriental inspirations. Picidae has always been a stripped down duo, but on this record they've included a special guest ‘star’ musician: Jo Berger Myhre; who had full artistic freedom, when adding double bass to some of the songs. Maybe most artists dream of playing with a symphonic orchestra, and on this album Picidae finally got their turn! Eirik Dorsdal made an absolutely beautiful arrangement of the title tune "A Stray Labyrinth", and on this album this song was performed by the duo and worlds' most northern symphonic orchestra: The Arctic Philharmonic.
 
All in all the wait is over. Pommelien Thijs, Bart Peeters en de Ideale Mannen, Metejoor en Regi zorgen voor een Vlaamse feestavond op de Grote Kaai te Lokeren.
 
Vrijdag 11 augustus wordt MIA night op de Grote Kaai want met POMMELIEN THIJS, BART PEETERS EN DE IDEALE MANNEN, METEJOOR en REGI live tekenen 6 van de 12 uitgereikte publieks Music Industry Awards 2023 present. Een avond voor jong en oud om niet te missen!
 
Voor zowel Metejoor en Pommelien Thijs, rising stars van de Nederlandstalige muziekscene, gaat het momenteel bijzonder hard: hoog tijd om ook Lokeren te bezoeken. Metejoors debuutalbum is nog geen twee jaar oud maar meteen goed voor diverse hits: “1 op een miljoen”, “Dit is wat mijn mama zei”, enz. Het schalt ongetwijfeld door menig jeugdige en – minder jeugdige - kamers momenteel.
 
Op dat debuutalbum van Pommelien Thijs is het nog even wachten, maar dat houdt haar niet tegen om ook hier de successen en prijzen aan elkaar te rijgen met hits zoals “Ongewoon”, “Meisjes van honing” en “Zilver”.
 
Ze worden aangevuld met gevestigde waarden Bart Peeters en Regi. Bart Peeters is het muzikale godenkind van Vlaanderen, el professor die zijn volk leerde samen zingen tot niks anders meer overblijft dan collectieve heesheid. En oh ja, alweer een fervente verzamelaar van MIA’s. Regi sluit deze feestavond af en geeft zo een herkansing aan die afwezigen die vorig jaar absoluut ongelijk hadden. Niet te missen!

De 48e editie van de Lokerse Feesten vindt plaats van vrijdag 4 augustus tot en met zondag 13 augustus 2023. Eerder werden onder meer BLUR, PLACEBO, MEGADETH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, GOLDBAND, BALTHAZAR en WILCO aangekondigd. Meer nieuwe namen volgen binnenkort.

​3’Ain is een trio waarin Yamen Martini (trompet), Otto Kint (contrabas) en Piet Maris (accordeon) de krachten bundelen. Ze spelen worldwide jazz met Middenoosterse invloeden.

In 2015 kwam Yamen van Syrië naar België, waar hij Piet ontmoette: de twee startten een samenwerking voor muziek bij een theatervoorstelling in 2016. Later  nodigde Piet Yamen uit om als gastmuzikant mee te spelen bij Jaune Toujours, zoals te horen is op hun album 'Europeana' (2018). In de zomer van 2019 vroegen Yamen en Piet aan Otto om mee in hun muzikale avontuur te stappen: het nieuwe trio 3'Ain was een feit.

De naam van de band is gebaseerd op ﻉ, de achttiende letter van het Arabische alfabet: één van de moeilijkst uit te spreken klinkers voor westerlingen. Omdat die In Arabische chat- en sms-conversaties dikwijls wordt weergegeven als drie en uitgeschreven wordt als ‘ain leek 3’Ain wel een gepaste naam voor een trio dat hedendaagse jazz en wereldmuziek speelt, met middenoosterse invloeden.

In mei 2020, in volle covid-lockdown releasten ze een eerste EP op het eigen label Choux de Bruxelles. Op 21 april verschijnt het debuutalbum ‘Sea Of Stories’, opgenomen in de Studio van De Grote Post (Oostende). De muziek van 3’Ain verwijst geregeld naar de omgeving en de sfeer van de plaats waar ze creëren, in de haven van Oostende, vandaar ook de vooruitgeschoven single ‘Scrambled Ensor’.

​Tijdens de Week van de Belgische Muziek maakte de organisatie al bekend dat Front242, The Haunted Youth, No Prisoners, Meltheads, The Hickey Underworld, Barna Koevoet and the Duijmschpijkers en Stikstof naar Herk-de-Stad zouden afzakken.

Aan de line-up voor het hoofdpodium worden nu Warhaus, het Britse Mura Masa, Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul, Dikke, Jack Vamp & The Castle of Creep en Mayorga aan toegevoegd.

Op het tweede podium 'Club' krijgen Front 242 en Meltheads, het gezelschap van Sons, Warmdüscher (UK), Tramhaus (NL), Deadletter (UK), Hemelbestormer, Oi Boys (FR), Huracan en Crouch.

Voor het meer dansbare werk moet je op het derde podium 'Dansbaar', zijn met Tiga (CA), Anthony Rother (D), Mella Dee (UK) en Biesmans.

Ook het podium 'Street' krijgt een upgrade met de toevoeging van Niels Orens en Wrong Man.

De ticketverkoop voor deze Rock Herk gaat net als in de voorbije jaren zeer hard. Bij de start van de ticketverkoop waren de honderd groepstickets (4+1) onmiddellijk de deur uit en ondertussen is bijna de helft van de tickets verkocht. He traveled to different places to record with old and new friends: Harrison Kennedy, Mary Flower, Eric Bibb, John Sebastian, Colin Linden, J.J. Milteau, and many others. "Getting together with these great musicians in the studio was highly therapeutic, and I expect it was for the other musicians and sound engineers," says Browne. "I decided to record some old songs that people might already know, and have fun with it. Fun was had, and I think we captured it!”
 
Whether he's gliding a slide across his resonator guitar, creating an intense mood with his tremolo 12-string guitar, or “hammering the claw” on his gourd banjo, Michael's passion and virtuosity always shine through. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Michael is the son of English professors whose love of music and poetry inspired them to take their nine year old son to the great jazz, blues and folk clubs in their adopted home of Montreal. By the age of fourteen, MJB was already a regular on the vibrant folk and coffee house scene adding banjo, fiddle, and mandolin to his masterful command of all variety of guitars and harmonica.
 
Michael Jerome Browne is a musician's musician; when he isn't performing his own material he is in demand backing up and recording with other artists, most notably Eric Bibb, whose 2017 Grammy-nominated CD “Migration Blues” he co-produced, played, and sang on.

Dit jaar staat de Leuvense rocklegende Big Bill vijftig jaar op de planken. Big Bill was erg populair in de jaren zeventig en bracht zijn rocknummers in het Leuvens dialect. Daarmee stond hij aan de wieg van de belpop. Hij was één van de eerste Belgische artiesten die rocknummers schreef en zong in zijn eigen dialect. Om de vijftigjarige carrière van Big Bill te vieren brengt BLP Records op 5 mei tegelijkertijd twee albums uit. Enerzijds is er de heruitgave van zijn eerste LP 'Big Bill' (1976) met daarop onder andere zijn bekendste nummer 'Ene Mee Hesp'. Op dit album spelen naast Jean-Marie Aerts ook andere belpopcoryfeeën  als Jean Blaute, Stoy Stoffelen, Mich Vebelen, Frakke Arn en Bert Hombroeckx, de broer van Armand (de echte naam van Big Bill). 'Big Bill' komt uit in een beperkte oplage van 500 exemplaren op gold vinyl.

Daarnaast is er ook de release van een compilatie-album met rarities, getiteld 'Last Call'. Voor het eerst in vijfentwintig jaar verschijnt zo een nieuw album van Big Bill. 'Last Call' bevat vijftien niet-album tracks die doorheen de jaren verschenen als single of op eerder moeilijk te vinden compilatiealbums. Op de nieuwe LP staan een aantal akoestische nummers die Big Bill midden jaren negentig opnam met Jean-Marie Aerts. De nummers werpen een vernieuwde en verfrissende blik op de carrière van de Leuvense rocker. De plaat sluit af met een akoestische versie van Big Bill zijn grootste hit 'Ene Mee Hesp'', waarbij een kinderkoor de zanger in het refrein bijspringt. De LP vormt een mooi slotstuk van de carrière van deze Leuvens legende en biedt de luisteraar de kans om een eerder vergeten repertoire opnieuw te ontdekken. Last Call' komt uit op creamy white vinyl en is eveneens beschikbaar op cd (digipack).

David Deacon: Blues and Roots music attached to a 6’5” rangy and rugged looking guy. He has a voice that sounds like it could have an atomic decay number attached to it. His bluesy, old-school rock/ballad storytelling spends time digging into the psyche of both someone who has travelled a lot of roads and the people who he met along the way. If you like Dire Straits or Tom Waits, maybe Leonard Cohen (if he rode motorcycles), Dylan for sure, perhaps Van Morrison, you will definitely love this.

David’s life has been a mix of writing poetry and songs, doing paintings, pen and inks and drawings, all while trying to make a living--but not getting too tied up in the places where he worked so his ideas had a place for themselves. He’s also managed to fit in some heavy risk taking along the way. David left university after determining his interest in art was greater than his interest in a degree and he went to Paris to study art. His work got better and better but his expectations of himself grew even greater looking at all the historical genius around him. Once home, he struggled to make a living as an artist which led to a chain of jobs in different businesses and industries over the ensuing years. 

Prior to his musical career, David had a long stint as a sports car and motorcycle racing driver, with some pretty impressive credentials in auto racing.  In 1979, he raced the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring (and finished 7th in his class) and was 3rd in the Canadian Sports Car Championship. The next year, he raced the Daytona 24 Hours for first time, and won the Canadian endurance racing championship. In 1981, David ran Daytona again and raced for the BMW factory team at 24 Hours of Le Mans; and in 1983 he raced at 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first Canadian team to qualify there, sponsored by  Canadian Tire (along with Jacques Villeneuve and Ludwig Heimrath, Jr.). 

Subsequently, he retired from professional racing, although he did race a little in the Rothmans Porsche Series (a series which he created) in Canada in ‘88 and ’89.

During the ‘90s, David recorded and released three albums and maintained nearly a seven-year residency at The Rex in Toronto. He also held regular weekend gigs in Toronto, Buffalo, Rochester, Ottawa, Peterborough, and Kingston.

Today, David is putting his pen to paper once again to write new music as well as reinvent some songs from the past. Deacon is excited to share his upcoming album, Four, with his audience. With ten vibrant tracks to look forward to, the album spans across a range of emotions. From the uncaring attitude of “No Never Mind” to the heartfelt emotion of tracks like “Poetry” and everything in between, there is something for everyone on this album.

“The songs ‘Poetry’ and ‘Hard Time’ are bookends to the same relationship. Probably no more needs to be said that isn’t said in the songs themselves,” reflects David. The album’s first single, “Arc of Life” – out March 24th – was written as a non-secular song that could be played at memorials to people. “I wanted something that spoke about them and not to some mystic abstract,” says David. “As well, I wanted to make clear my view that I believe that what we do is what we are - not what we hoped or believed or just talked about.”  Other album highlights include, “California Has No Winter,” a tribute to the seemingly endless magic underlying American culture that can dismiss age or things in decline or decay as being matters of value. As described by the artist, “It is scintillating to be young, but one shouldn’t miss the fact that some things require age to become beautiful and that like sunsets, those may be the most beautiful moment in the day. It concludes with the line, ‘How do you know when its over?’ and given the floods, snowstorms and fires that have ravaged California lately, that may be the most telling question in the face of what appears to be significant climate change that may make the title of the song a little ironic.”

Op 30 april en 1 mei geeft het Roots&Roses de aftrap van het festivalseizoen 2023. 'RR' is terug, in topvorm, 2 dagen lang - met 28 bands op de affiche.
 
Headliners: Nick Waterhouse, The Datsuns, Pokey LaFarge, Graveyard, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Barrence Whitfield & Savages, Datsuns, Jim Jones Allstars, Kadaver, Leyla McCalla, The Courettes, Ron Gallo, Boogie Beasts, Ada Oda & Psychonaut.
 
Met de editie van 2019 had RR een hoogtepunt bereikt qua opkomst. Editie 2020 werd afgelast vanwege de pandemie. In 2021, nog steeds dankzij corona, werd er tijdens de maand juli een beperkte zomeredititie opgezet. In 2022, net toen de greep van de pandemie begon te verslappen, keerde het festival toch terug naar zijn gebruikelijke datum en locatie met weliswaar enkele annulaties van US bands.
 
De editie van 2023 is dus een terugkeer naar de gebruikelijke datum en festivalterrein, terug voor de volle 100%, zonder beperkingen en weerom een top programma. Een programma waarover kenners nu al zeggen dat het een grand cru-jaar wordt.
 
About: Roots & Roses is een cult-evenement in Lessen op de taalgrens bij Geraardsbergen. Cult door het programma, want het grootste muziekfestival dat grossiert in de actuele varianten van blues tot rock, met de vinger op de pols van wat er leeft en beweegt binnen garage, surf, americana, rockabilly tot folk rock, van electrisch tot akoustisch. Maar ook cult dankzij de filosofie achter het festival (think local, eco, quality!) en vooral de sfeer & het onthaal van het publiek. Het festival lokt steevast beoekers vanuit heel europa, en meer dan de helft komt uit vlaanderen.
 
Het programma van Roots & Roses blijft ook dit jaar trouw aan de grote programmatielijnen die sinds dag 1 uitgezet werden, maar ook die evolueren. Twee grote trends zullen opnieuw de programmering van het festival richting geven: enerzijds "roots" in de breedste zin van het woord, en anderzijds meer elektrische genres en rock.
 
Omdat de weergoden eind april-begin mei nog niet helemaal te vertrouwen zijn, rekenen we weer op onze twee concerttenten !
In de Roots-tent huist de rootsmuziek in de breedste zin van het woord: van Americana tot folk, akoestische blues, rhythm 'n blues en moderne country.
In de Roses-tent programmeren elektrische en energieke genres, van garage tot hard blues en alle eerder ‘up beat’ (opzwepende) vormen van rock 'n roll.
 
Onze principes blijven, maar de internationale scene evolueert. De line-up van 2023 is flink geworteld in de 21e eeuw met de grote namen van nu, maar we omarmen geleidelijk aan nieuwkomers in genres als stoner, psychedelische rock met een streepje blues.
 
Deze nieuwe generatie toont ongegeneerd haar inspiratie: psychedelische rock voor Graveyard, Kadavar, Ron Gallo en Psychonaut; oude blues & folk voor Pokey LaFarge, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis en Leyla McCalla; garage voor de Datsuns, Courettes en DeuxLuxes. Terwijl anderen trouw blijven aan pure bluesrock, zoals The Devil's Barkers, Barrence Whitfield of Lee Bains.

THE SHOW - a tribute to ABBA zal op 17 mei 2024 in Vorst Nationaal een eerbetoon brengen aan de 50e verjaardag van ABBA's doorbraak, hun legendarische muziekcollectie en het succesvolle verhaal van deze iconische popgroep.

​Sinds hun ontstaan 50 jaar terug, is de muziek van ABBA nog steeds levend en ontzettend populair. De jubileumshow zal een overzicht brengen van ABBA's grootste hits aller tijden en zelfs nummers van het gloednieuwe album Voyage, dat in 2021 werd uitgebracht. THE SHOW is niet zomaar een zoveelste goedkope ABBA-lookalike. Ruben Block bracht op 30 september 2022 zijn solo debuut ‘Looking to Glide’ uit bij PIAS met daarop de singles “Lights”, “Awake”, “Turn The Tide”, “That’s Just The Way” en “Turning On A Fan”. Hij sluit deze campagne af met een reeks solo-concerten tijdens dewelke hij een melting pot brengt van eigen solo nummers, enkele Triggerfinger-nummers en een paar raak gekozen en verrassende covers. Deze tournee brengt hem alvast langs de betere zalen in Nederland, België, Zwitserland en Duitsland.

RUBEN BLOCK
Charismatische zanger-gitarist van Triggerfinger die eind ‘22 zijn solo debuut ‘Looking to Glide’ uitbracht. Hij toerde hiermee intensief door de Benelux met band alsook met Crowded House in Duitsland. November ll. speelde Ruben Block in Nederland 5 memorabele concerten met het 60-koppig orkest van NNO o.l.v. Dirk Brossé, zo ook in Carré in Amsterdam.

IL VOLO en België, het leest als een waar liefdesverhaal!
 
Ons land was één van de eerste landen buiten Italië om het Pop-Opera trio te omarmen. In 2011 stonden ze hier voor een eerste keer met twee uitverkochte concerten in het Koninklijk Circus in Brussel en de Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerpen.
Daarna speelden ze talloze uitverkochte concerten, met in 2017 als kers op de taart een prachtig en zo goed als volgepakt concert in Vorst Nationaal!
 
Zes jaar later keren Piero, Ignazio en Gianluca eindelijk terug met een "Best Of" concert, waarbij al hun grootste hits de revue zullen passeren!
 
Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto en Gianluca Ginoble waren in 2009 nog nobele onbekenden toen ze elk apart deelnamen aan de talentenjacht “Ti lascio una canzone”, op de Italiaanse tv-zender RAI 1. Hun talent werd al snel opgemerkt door Michele Torpedine, de manager die de carrières lanceerde van Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero, Giorgia en Biagio Antonacci. Torpedine wilde samen met en voor het drietal werken aan een internationaal artistiek avontuur, gedragen door hun buitengewone stemtalenten, individueel en als trio. In zeer korte tijd werden ze de eerste Italiaanse artiesten ooit die een contract kregen van een groot Amerikaans platenlabel, Geffen Records.
 
Hun titelloze debuutplaat, “Il Volo” (2010), ging platina en haalde zelfs de US Billboard Top Ten. De groep mocht zijn opwachting maken op grote Europese en Amerikaanse televisieprogramma's, waaronder The Tonight Show, American Idol, Good Morning America, The Today Show, het Duitse Wetten, dass..? en de MDA Labor DAY Telethon met Jerry Lewis, en was samen met Unicef aanwezig op het Filmfestival van Venetië, in steun van kinderen in de Hoorn van Afrika. In 2014 sleepten ze op de Latin Billboard Awards in Miami de prijs “Latin Pop Albums Artist of the Year, Duo or Group” in de wacht.
 
Nadat ze in 2015 werden uitgeroepen tot de overwinnaars van het Festival van San Remo, werden ze echt helemaal onstuitbaar: ze haalden nummer 1 op iTunes met hun EP, single en bijbehorende video (die online een recordaantal keer werd bekeken). Met “Sanremo Grande Amore” en “Grande Amore” haalden ze de top van de FIMI/GfK-hitlijsten, en de platen haalden respectievelijk dubbel platina en platina. Il Volo vertegenwoordigde Italië op het Eurovisiesongfestival 2015 en het Europese publiek ging helemaal overstag: ze kregen de hoogste score in de televoting. Die populariteit vertaalde zich daarna ook in de verkoopcijfers van single “Grande Amore” en album “Sanremo Grande Amore”, die in de Eurovisielanden meteen naar nummer 1 stegen in de iTunes-charts.
 
Zowel op hun albums als live op het podium spreidt de groep hun enorme vocale en entertainmenttalent tentoon. Mis hun Live in Concert Tour niet, op 7 oktober in Vorst Nationaal.
 

Naar aanleiding van de 100ste verjaardag van experimenteel filmmaker, antropoloog én platenverzamelaar Harry Smith (°1923), zet AB drie dagen lang zijn meesterverzamelwerk Anthology Of American Folk Music in de kijker. Ze doen dit aan de hand van concerten een filmscreening en een talk.

Met zijn 84 songs (die dateren uit de periode 1927-1932) wordt The Anthology beschouwd als de bijbel van de Amerikaanse folk. Eind vorige eeuw kreeg Harry Smith er zelfs een Grammy Award voor in de categorie Best Historical Album. Rolling Stone omschreef het werk als ‘One of the greatest releases of all-time!’ Onder zijn rabiate fans telt de verzamelaar onder andere Beck, Beth Orton, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Jack White en Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). Niemand minder dan Nick Cave leende zowel Stagger Lee als Henry Lee uit The Anthology.
 
Redenen genoeg dus voor een uitgebreid eerbetoon op de dag dat Harry Smith exact 100 jaar zou geworden zijn. Daarom inviteert AB excellent muzikaal volk als Meskerem Mees, Mount Eerie, Sam Amidon (w/ special guest Beth Orton), The Golden Glows, Mike Gangloff, Shovel Dance Collective en Venediktos Tempelboom. Allen nemen ze een diepe duik in The Anthology en vertolken ze hun favoriete songs of vertellen hun eigen verhaal in de geest van Smith’s werk.
 
Met Rani Singh (director van de Harry Smith Archives én Harry Smith’s persoonlijke assistente) en Bret Lunsford (auteur van het recent verschenen boek Sounding for Harry Smith) verdiepen we ons middels een Q&A in de nalatenschap van de man. De docu The Old Weird America schetst het verhaal achter The Anthology en pianist Giovanni Di Domenico zal tot slot muzikaal improviseren bij Smith’s korte animatiefilms Early Abstractions.
 
Dit eerbetoon krijgt de volledige goedkeuring en medewerking van de Harry Smith Archives.

De Zuid-Afrikaanse zanger/songschrijver Bongeziwe Mabandla is de laatste jaren ook flink buiten zijn thuisland aan de weg aan het timmeren. Voor zijn derde album “Iimini” (2020)  kreeg hij vele handen op elkaar en ook zijn vele (Benelux/Europese) live-shows werden zeer goed bezocht en enthousiast ontvangen. Met zijn nieuwe vierde album “AmaXesha” toont hij aan dat hij inderdaad is uitgegroeid tot het nieuwe gezicht van de Afro-folk; hij brengt een originele, moderne, spirituele, dansbare, melancholische doch veelal vrolijke klank, met invloeden van Afrikaanse artiesten als Jabu Khanyile, Bongo Maffin, Miriam Makeba, Simphiwe Dana, Thandiswa Mazwai, Salif Keita en Busi Mhlongo, maar ook met (Westerse) invloeden van Tracy Chapman, Damon Albarn, Lauryn Hill, Bon Iver, Geoffrey Gurrumul, Sinkane en Michael Kiwanuka.

​Op “AmaXesha” werkt Bongeziwe weer samen met zijn kompaan/producer/muzikant Tiago Correia-Paulo (oorspronkelijk uit Mozambique), die vooral het meer moderne en electronische pallet voor zijn rekening neemt. Ingetogen, gospel-achtige en traditionele folk (met teksten in zijn prachtige Xhosa taal) blijft de basis, maar door dit in een breder modern muzikaal spectrum te brengen (met drum loops en synthesizers), wordt de karakteristieke ‘modern world music‘ sound van Bongeziwe Mabandla, met zijn wendbare, sensuele, meditatieve en zoete stem, een mix van ‘funky folk, uplifting gospel, sweet soul, smooth jazz & atmospheric urban beats’!

VRT en stad Antwerpen schrijven de komende jaren een nieuw hoofdstuk voor Jazz Middelheim. Na het faillissement van de vorige organisator hebben de twee partners samen een ambitieus toekomstplan uitgedokterd. Vanaf 2024 komt er opnieuw een jaarlijks jazzfestival met internationale reputatie. VRT en stad Antwerpen zijn het met elkaar eens dat het festival zich zal blijven toespitsen op muzikale kwaliteit en diversiteit, ruimte zal maken voor vernieuwing en toegankelijk zal blijven voor iedereen. De toekomstgerichte omgeving en het engagement om te blijven investeren, geven Jazz Middelheim de kans om verder uit te groeien tot een duurzaam en financieel gezond festival. De muziekbeleving die het festival al tientallen jaren biedt, blijft zo ook in de komende jaren gegarandeerd. Klara is vaste partner en zal er ook live uitzenden.

​Rijke geschiedenis
In 1969 organiseerde de toenmalige Belgische Radio- en Televisieomroep (BRT) voor het eerst Jazz Middelheim. Oorspronkelijk in het Middelheimpark, later in Park Den Brandt. Bij al die edities verleende stad Antwerpen haar medewerking en zorgde ze voor financiële en/of logistieke ondersteuning. Op die manier konden over de jaren heen duizenden muziekliefhebbers gedurende meerdere dagen de grote namen van de jazzwereld aan het werk zien. Naast internationale bekendheden stonden er steevast verschillende Belgische artiesten op het programma. Het festival, waarop alle jazzstromingen aan bod komen, bouwde daarmee een internationale uitstraling en uitstekende reputatie op.

Mooie toekomst
Jazz Middelheim, dat al meer dan 50 jaar bestaat, blijft een meerdaags midzomerfestival dat een internationale, hedendaagse jazzervaring biedt. Het centrale podium is gelegen in Park Ten Brandt. Het festival wil ook de jazzcommunity in Antwerpen versterken. Hiervoor zal worden samengewerkt met lokale partners, organisaties en muziekscholen, om de jazzcultuur in de stad te promoten. Jazz in alle mogelijke vormen en subgenres met een gezonde mix van internationale artiesten en opkomende muzikanten zorgen voor een evenwichtig aanbod van stijlen op het festival.

Voor de programmatie en organisatie van het festival zal de komende maanden een partnerselectie worden opgestart. Om een stabiele partner te vinden en om de kwaliteit van de programmatie te kunnen verzekeren, nemen VRT en stad Antwerpen voldoende tijd. Daardoor komt er dit jaar uitzonderlijk geen editie van Jazz Middelheim.

Gospel singer and member of the Alabama Blind Boys, Paul Beasley, has passed away. The storied tenor singer, who spent years with the Gospel Keynotes and the Mighty Clouds of Joy before losing sight and joining the Blind Boys in 2013, died on March 13. He was 78.

 
Beasley was born on Dec. 11, 1944, in DeRidder, La., and was known among gospel quartet fans for the songs “Jesus You’ve Been Good To Me” with the Keynotes and “Walk Around Heaven,” which was performed with the Mighty Clouds–both pieces employed the artist’s unique falsetto.

When asked how he developed his falsetto voice, Beasley replied, “it just came naturally. When I was about 12 or 13 years old me and my sister used to sit down and see who could go the highest.”

The musician later lent his vocals to the Blind Boys unit, beginning with the album I’ll Find A Way, released in 2013 and produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Beasley later embraced the song “There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated At The Conference Table)” from that album, and it became a showstopper at Blind Boys live performances during the 10 years which followed the drop. 

Beasley sang on three other albums by the Blind Boys, plus one that has yet to be released. He was part of the group while they garnered multiple Grammy nominations and toured the world.

In a press release announcing Beasley’s passing, his bandmates in the Blind Boys of Alabama, Ricky McKinnie and Jimmy Carter, Joey Williams, Rev. Julius Love and Sterling Glass, remembered their friend and collaborator: “In life, there are some things that only come once, and the legacy and voice of Paul Beasley is one of those things. Thank God for him. 

They concluded their statement by adding, “He was often imitated but never duplicated. The Blind Boys have been friends and soulmates with Paul for many years. The memories that we shared are unsurpassed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of his family and friends. God bless you all.”
A service honoring Beasley’s life will be held in his hometown of DeRidder, La., on Saturday, March 25. 

Het begin van de festivalzomer ziet er veelbelovend uit!  ROCK ZOTTEGEM 23 wordt een XL-versie met een nieuwe editie van ROCK ZOTTEGEM on SUNDAY. Vandaag knalt het Oost-Vlaamse festival de eerste namen de wereld in, de volgende dagen volgen extra namen. Op vrijdag 7 juli zakken Goldband, Soulfly en Wolfmother af naar Zottegem. Op zaterdag 8 juli is het de beurt aan  Zwangere Guy en Two Door Cinema Club. Een mooie eerste lichting rocknamen voor een festival dat in 2023 groter wordt dan ooit tevoren.
 
Vrijdag 7 juli 2023: Goldband, Soulfly en Wolfmother
 
Op vrijdag 7 juli mag het Zottegemse festivalpubliek zich alvast opmaken voor optredens van oa.  Goldband, Soulfly en Wolfmother. Het Nederlandse fenomeen Goldband komt voor het eerst naar ROCK ZOTTEGEM. Het trio stukadoors is de hitsensatie van het moment en maakt er live altijd een feestje van. Na enkele uitverkochte Lotto Arena’s mag ook het Zottegems festivalpubliek zich deze zomer opmaken voor een resem hits zoals ‘Witte Was’, ‘Noodgeval’ en ‘Alles Kapot’. Slechts een handvol Belgische festivals kunnen de komst van Goldband aankondigen.
 
Met de doortocht van de Braziliaanse trashmetalband Soulfly kunnen ook echte metalheads hun hart ophalen op deze editie van ROCK ZOTTEGEM. Max Cavalera viert 25 jaar Soulfly en brengt in Zottegem een exclusief festivalconcert op Belgische bodem. Nergens anders zie je deze zomer de band aan het werk. Ook exclusief te zien op de Crazy Main: de Australische rockband Wolfmother. Gekend voor hun heerlijke gitaarriffs en dampende live reputatie. Eerder al in het voorprogramma van Pearl Jam, Guns ’n Roses en AC/DC, deze zomer in Zottegem. Ook Wolfmother brengt een exclusief bezoek aan ons land in Zottegem.
 
Zaterdag 8 juli 2023: Zwangere Guy en Two Door Cinema Club
 
Op zaterdag 8 juli zakken Zwangere Guy en Two Door Cinema Club af naar Zottegem. De Brusselse rapper Zwangere Guy -of Gorik van Oudheusden- zakt voor het eerst af naar Zottegem. En dat is vrij exclusief. Naast Zottegem kan je enkel van zijn laidback hiphop met een randje genieten op Pukkelpop en Werchter. De BIG-THREE dus! En -laat ons eerlijk zijn- in Zottegem is de sfeer niet te evenaren en smaken de festivalpintjes nog beter. Wij weten alvast wat gekozen. ;-)
 
Ook de Noord-Ierse indierockband Two Door Cinema Club komt onze Crazy Main op zaterdag 8 juli onveilig maken. De band die het betere gitaarwerk perfect weet te mixen met dansbare, elektronische pop weet muziekliefhebbers over de hele wereld te charmeren. Voor muziekkenners en -liefhebbers: een must-see. En jawel hoor, opnieuw een exclusief concert op Belgische bodem.

Organisator Kurt De Loor is alvast heel erg tevreden met de eerste reeks namen die hij kon strikken voor ROCK ZOTTEGEM 2023. “De ideale mix tussen het hardere werk als Soulfly en Wolfmother, nieuwe hitsensaties zoals Goldband, het betere werk uit eigen land, Zwangere Guy, en de goeie degelijke indierock van Two Door Cinema Club. Ik ben een tevreden man. De volgende dagen maken we nog namen bekend, hou daarvoor vooral onze facebookpagina in de gaten. We hebben ook heel wat nieuws in petto op ons festivalterrein. ROCK ZOTTEGEM 2023 wordt groter dan ooit, dat beloven we nu al.”

Noch mijn broer Karl, noch ik, noch de andere mede-organisatoren hadden ooit durven dromen dat ‘onze baby’ ROCK ZOTTEGEM zou uitgroeien tot één van de grootste festivals van het land. Het doet nog altijd een beetje raar als we ‘Zottegem’ zien staan tussen ‘London’ en ‘Parijs’ op de tourlist van internationale topbands. Daar zijn we fier op.”

Eén van de meest markante stemmen van de afgelopen decennia bracht zopas de video bij haar nieuwe single “Come On, Aphrodite” uit, als voorbode van een nieuw album. En bij dat album hoort ook de langverwachte terugkeer naar het internationale podium! Natalie Merchant, icoon van de Amerikaanse rockscene, is terug van weggeweest en komt op 14 november naar het Koninklijk Circus in Brussel!

De uit Jamestown, New York, afkomstige zangeres vervoegt in 1984 de rockgroep 10.000 Maniacs. Na zes schitterende studioalbums samen verlaat ze de band en gaat vanaf 1994 solo verder. Merchant bundelt haar talent als schrijfster, componiste en performer tot een folk/rock universum, dat zowel breekbaar en gevoelig is als ongelooflijk menselijk. Haar debuutplaat ‘Tigerlily’, uitgebracht in 1995, was een instant succes en werd bekroond met driedubbel platina. Intussen heeft ze al negen soloalbums op haar naam, waarvan wereldwijd meer dan zeven miljoen exemplaren zijn verkocht. Ze is daarmee ontegensprekelijk één van de meest toonaangevende artiesten van de internationale muziekscene. Dankzij haar persoonlijkheid en immense talent kon ze doorheen de jaren fantastische samenwerkingen aangaan met o.a. R.E.M., Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits, Tracy Chapman en Neil Young. Haar laatste optreden in België dateert alweer van 2016, toen ze een topconcert gaf in het Koninklijk Circus. Haar nieuwe single “Come On, Aphrodite” is alvast een heerlijk voorsmaakje van haar volgende album ‘Keep Your Courage’, dat op 14 april in de rekken ligt. Four Chicago bluesmen, a Mississippi juke joint king, a blues queen, and a folk-blues icon are those being inducted into The Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame, 43rd class. Those honored have made the Blues timeless through performance, documentation, and recording. Since its inception in 1980, The Blues Foundation has inducted new members annually into the Blues Hall of Fame for their historical contribution, impact, and overall influence on the Blues. Members are inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in five categories: Performers, Individuals, Classic of Blues Literature, Classic of Blues Recording (Song), and Classic of Blues Recording (Album). The Blues Foundation has inducted over 400 industry professionals, recordings, and literature into the Blues Hall of Fame. 

Carey Bell took his place in the lineage of Chicago blues harp masters in the 1970s, following in the footsteps of his mentors, Big Walter Horton and Little Walter Jacobs. In addition to recording his albums, he was Chicago’s go-to harmonica player on over 100 sessions backing such artists as Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Louisiana Red, Jimmy Rogers, Eddy Clearwater, and many others. His Alligator CD, Good Luck Man, won a W.C. Handy Award in 1998, the same year he was elected Traditional Male Blues Artist of the Year, following several previous nominations.

Junior Kimbrough became a nationally renowned blues icon known for his unique style and his role as potentate at his own Juke, Junior’s Place. He was influenced by Mississippi Fred McDowell and his friend, R.L. Burnside. His music appeared in the documentary Deep Blues, and he released albums for Philwood, Highwater, and Fat Possum. His bands typically included some of his sons and younger members of the Burnside family. The Black Keys, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Daft Punk, and the North Mississippi Allstars have covered his songs. 

Esther Phillips was a 13-year-old prodigy, singing very adult, saucy blues with the legendary Johnny Otis. Called “the indisputable queen of the blues” by the famed music critic Leonard Feather, Esther, a devotee of Dina Washington, could deliver blues, R&B, soul, jazz, pop, and even country songs with honesty and conviction. With Johnny Otis, she recorded three consecutive No 1 R&B hits in 1950 for the Savoy label. One of her biggest hits, “Release Me.” led to a contract with Atlantic Records, followed by a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance of 1972.

John Primer cut his teeth singing in church and playing a handmade one-string guitar. He earned his pedigree in blues playing with Blues Hall of Famers Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Magic Slim. Guitar wizard Sammy Lawhorn mentored him, and he was known as a first-call sideman in Chicago, recording with James Cotton, Jimmy Rogers, John Brim, Eddie Shaw, and many more, along with live recordings with Muddy, Big Mama Thornton, and others. Subsequently, Willie Dixon invited Primer to join his Chicago Blues All Stars, and when Muddy Waters needed a new band in 1980, Primer found himself playing with one of his lifelong idols until Muddy’s death. He recorded for Austrian label Wolf Records, Earwig, Code Blue (Atlantic), Telarc, and Blues House Productions. Primer has been a perennial nominee and frequent victor in the Traditional Blues categories of the Blues Music Awards, Living Blues Awards, and other honors programs. His latest CD project, released in February 2023, is a tribute to Magic Slim. 

​Snooky Pryor was Born in rural Mississippi in 1919. He’s considered one of the pioneers of the classic Chicago blues of the post-World War II era. He became one of the first harp players to amplify his sound with electricity. His first recordings were for Planet. J.O.B., Parrot, and Vee-Jay, and he also recorded for the Today label, Big Bear, Blind Pig, Antone’s, Wolf, Electro-Fi, and others. Pryor made some historic recordings for several Chicago labels, including Boogie (Snooky and Moody’s Boogie), a predecessor to Little Walter’s massive hit Juke, and Judgment Day (later revived by British rockers the Pretty Things and Eric Clapton), 

Josh White transitioned from a career as a Piedmont blues artist to a unique and integral voice in the folk music world of the 1940s. His induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and concurrent honors as Folk Alliance International’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient are finally shining the spotlight on an icon whose many contributions have too often been forgotten or overlooked. Unfortunately, his protest songs and leftist associations led to a blacklisting during the McCarthy anti-Communist era. He incorporated Tin Pan Alley hits, pop tunes, work songs, and folk ballads from various sources. His most popular number, “One Meat Ball,” was a big hit when covered by the Andrews Sisters, and many listeners heard “House of the Rising Sun” for the first time through White. His 1949 release, Ballads and Blues on Decca, was the first blues record to be released in a newly introduced format – the 33 rpm L.P. He recorded for Mercury, Columbia, ABC-Paramount, Blue Note, Elektra, Vanguard, and labels in France, the U.K., Italy, and Denmark. 

Fenton Robinson practiced an erudite brand of blues hailed by musicians, critics, and discerning audiences worldwide. However, he rarely enjoyed wide public acclaim with greater concentration than his audience usually gave him. He was a performer, songwriter, and teacher. He backed Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Otis Rush and recorded for USA, Giant and Palos, Stage 7. He also recorded two critically acclaimed albums for Alligator, including the Blues Hall of Fame LP I Hear Some Blues Downstairs. 

INDIVIDUALS – BUSINESS, PRODUCTION, MEDIA, ACADEMIC

David Evans scholarly research and his fieldwork in Mississippi, Louisiana, and other states formed the basis for a plethora of publications, recordings, liner notes, and lectures. He has been the recipient of multiple research grants, academic honors, and awards, including two Grammys for liner notes. He graduated from Harvard before earning degrees in folklore and mythology at UCLA and teaching at California State-Fullerton. His film and video work includes a Mississippi fife and drum documentary and an instructional video on the guitar style of Tommy Johnson, while his radio resume is highlighted by two long-running shows he hosted in Memphis on WEVL. Evans has served as a series editor at the University Press of Mississippi since 1996. The series numbers over 100 books, including The Original Blues, this year’s Blues Hall of Fame honoree in the Classics of Blues Literature category, and his latest book, Going Up the Country: Adventures in Blues Fieldwork in the 1960s.

Little Walter: The Complete Chess Masters is 2023’s Classic Blues Recording: Album. Hip-O’s 5-CD, 126-track compilation of one of the most influential Blues harmonica players, is true blues treasure trove.
 
There are five Classic of Blues Recording: Singles receiving Hall of Fame induction: Lowell Fulson’s 1965 recording, “Black Nights,” Freddy King’s 1961 hit, “I’m Tore Down,” “Mojo Hand,” released by LIghtnin’ Hopkins in 1960, “My Black Mama” released by Son House in 1930 and the Howlin’ Wolf classic, “Little Red Rooster.”

Entering the Blues Hall of Fame as a Classic of Blues Literature is The Original Blues: The Emergence of the Blues in African American Vaudeville 1899-1926, by Lynn Abbott & Doug Seroff chonicles the minstrel and ragtime traditions in vaudeville theatre that was major public venue for Blues in its early years.

The Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held in conjunction with the Blues Music Awards, will occur on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at the Halloran Centre (225 S. Main St., Memphis). A cocktail reception honoring the BHOF Inductees and Blues Music Awards nominees will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the formal inductions commencing at 6:30 p.m. in the Halloran Theater. Tickets, including the ceremony and reception, are $75 each and available with Blues Music Awards tickets.

Metejoor was in 2019 nog openingsact maar is inmiddels de chouchou van heel Vlaanderen en bij uitbreiding Nederland. MEAU (NL) bewijst dat ze meer is dan alleen de megahit ‘Dat heb jij gedaan’ en het onafscheidelijke zanger/acteursduo Cleymans & Van Geel mag meteen de toon zetten voor wat een knalfeestje moet worden. En dan te weten dat er nog één klepper aan dit indrukwekkende lijstje toegevoegd zal worden! Suikerrock vindt plaats van vrijdag 4 t/m zondag 6 augustus 2023 op het Bietenplein aan de Suikerraffinaderij in Tienen en heeft naast (inter)nationale kleppers op drie podia ook heel wat randanimatie te bieden.
