TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS RETURNING TO STAGE AFTER BOTTLE INCIDENT

NEWS / In late May of 2013, Frederick “Toots” Hibbert was performing with his band, Toots & the Maytals, at the Dominion Riverrock Festival in Richmond, VA when a 19-year-old man in the crowd threw a vodka bottle at the stage, hitting Hibbert in the head and causing lacerations.
What seemed like it would be a fairly quick fix in the hospital turned into a nightmare for Hibbert who suffered numerous aftereffects and was ordered by doctor’s to cancel the balance of their 2013 tour.
The concertgoer, William Connor Lewis, was charged with felony assault and was sentenced to six months in prison even though Toots asked for leniency. Still, Hibbert continued to suffer from the attack over the last three years listing extreme anxiety, memory loss, headaches, dizziness, a fear of crowds and performing and the inability to remember song lyrics.
As of today, it appears that he is finally over many of those issues as Toots & the Maytals have announced nine North American shows for the month of June. (Bron: Music-News)

DIANA ROSS INVOLVED IN MINOR CAR CRASH

NEWS / Diana Ross hit the stage in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night (13Apr16) after she was involved in a minor car accident hours before her concert.
The Supremes star, 72, was a passenger in a limousine when the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) reportedly drove through a stop sign and crashed into the Town Car. 
Authorities in Bethlehem tell local news station NBC 10 the music legend complained of head and neck pain after the incident, and was treated by paramedics at the scene. However, she insisted she would not require hospitalisation.
Ross, who was on her way to a gig at the Sands Event Center in Lehigh Valley that evening, decided the show must go on and performed her set as planned.

Police say no one else was injured in the crash, and the 22-year-old driver of the SUV received a traffic citation.
Ross assured fans on Twitter Thursday (14Apr16) she is feeling perfectly well, asking others not to fret about her welfare.
"I was involved in a car accident yesterday, but I'm fine.I ask you not to worry. I will see you tonight at the show in Providence :)," she tweeted, referring to the concert she is performing at Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Fans will have the opportunity to see Ross perform in several cities throughout North America in the spring and the summer (16). She is planning to dazzle audiences in Calgary, Canada, Los Angeles, California and more, closing out the string of concerts in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan on 30 July (16). (Bron: Music-News)

ZZ TOP CANCEL SHOW AS DUSTY HILL DISLOCATES SHOULDER

NEWS / ZZ Top was all set for their show last night at the Lone Star Events Center Amphitheater in Lubbock, TX but, as he was exiting the tour bus, bassist Dusty Hill fell and dislocated his shoulder.
Hill was taken to a local hospital for treatment but the damage was done. The manager of the Lone Star venue was forced to take the stage to tell the crowd that the show had been cancelled and rescheduled for May 29.
Now the injury is starting to take out further ZZ Top dates. They have already postponed their show tonight at The Firelake Arena in Shawnee, OK and cancelled their Saturday appearance at Chilifest in Snook, TX.
For those looking forward to the Chilifest show, the promoters are looking for a replacement:
Chilifest Inc. wishes Dusty Hill a speedy recovery and completely understands their reason for canceling the 25th Anniversary of Chilifest 2016. The show must go on and we always have a Plan B to back up situations like this. Although Plan B has never been implemented, an event of this caliber always needs a back up plan. So gracing the stage on Saturday in ZZ Top's place will be announced later this afternoon and it will end the outstanding entertainment line-up of 10 previous performers that took place Friday and into this Saturday.
The band's next appearance is Friday, April 22 at the Beau Rivage Theatre in Biloxi, MS. Hopefully Dusty's shoulder will be mended by that time. (Bron: VVN Music)

HESPERIA STUDIO REPORT

NEWS / Nadat het gehele instrumentale gedeelte van het nieuwe Hesperia album ‘Ceasar [Roma Vol. I]’ voltooid is wordt nu ook het vocale gedeelte opgenomen. Het wordt een concept album over Julius Ceasar, een rock opera met een sterk filmische sfeer.
Het hoofdgenre blijft metal in al zijn subgenres met invloeden van Neo Folk en folk met oudheemse instrumenten (bijvoorbeeld: ‘a Crwth in De Bello Gallico’). Verder zal er ook typische Italiaanse Rock en prog, Italiaanse opera, psychedelia in oorspronkelijke sjamanistische vorm, typisich romaanse religie alsook 60’s invloeden te vinden zijn. Het album werd gecomponeerd op zoek naar goddelijke inspiratie door middel van psycho-fysieke zuivering, met behulp van wierook, tantrische yoga, en sommige sjamanistische technieken in eenzame en rituele plaatsen.

‘Ceasar bevat tien nummers die allen gelinkt worden aan het Ceasar concept. Elk nummer heeft zijn eigen intro maar er loopt een rode draad door het ganse concept. Sommige complexe ritmes en maatveranderingen zullen ook op dit album weer te horen zijn. (7/4, 23/8, 73/8).

Het album wordt gezongen in het Latijns (waaronder het titelnummer) en Italiaans. Er zal ook minder gebruik gemaakt worden van cleane vocals maar er zullen meer aggresieve vocale partijen op dit album verschijnen.

De foto’s bij dit studio report zijn genomen nabij de Romeinse brug aan the Rubicon rivier waar Ceasar destijds de rivier kruiste met de woorden “Alea Iacta Est”. De Rubicon rivier vormde de natuurlijke grens tussen Gallieë en Rome. Enkele van de sfeergeluiden voor het album zijn ook op deze plaats opgenomen.

The Loreley Amphitheater is a UNESCO World Heritage and holds legendary ROCKPALAST shows in the 70s and 80s. On the hill of the River Rhine, it is located between Frankfurt and Cologne in Germany. Since 2006 the Night of the Prog Festival is happening at the legendary rock.

FOCUS
With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the '70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits “Hocus Pocus”, “House of The King” and “Sylvia”, as well as critically acclaimed albums 'Moving Waves', 'Focus 3' and 'Hamburger Concerto', the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans! 
After a comeback in the early 2000's, which resulted in the well-received albums 'Focus 8' and 'Focus 9', the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is famed Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, who joined the group on their second album 'Moving Waves' in 1972. Internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, Pierre remains a defining factor in the Focus sound. Bassist Bobby Jacobs, who comes from a well-acclaimed Dutch musical family and guitarist Menno Gootjes, who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, complete the band's current line-up. Recently, Focus's biggest hit "Hocus Pocus" was used in a 4-minute Nike commercial before the World Cup broadcast. Focus music can be regularly heard on Top Gear and Saxondale on TV in the UK. 
A new Focus era has arrived! There is a rejuvenated passion in the new compositions that adorn the new album 'Focus X', which features a full scale Roger Dean painting on the cover. CARL PALMER
Carl Palmer is a drummer’s drummer. A consummate professional, a brilliant technician and a dynamic showman, he has thrilled listeners and audiences alike for nearly four decades with some of music’s most memorable bands including Atomic Rooster, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Along the way his dazzling speed and mastery of the drums, combined with his infectious stage personality, have secured for him a respected place in history as one of Rock and Roll’s greatest drummers.
Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer was born in Birmingham, England, on March 20th, 1950. From the beginning it was clear that music was in the stars for the young Carl Palmer. His grandfather played the drums, his grandmother was a symphony violinist, his mother played an assortment of instruments, and his father sang, danced and played the guitar and drums as a semi-professional entertainer. In a musical family where even his brothers picked up the guitar and drums, Carl’s fascination with music began early and classical violin studies followed.
As he grew older, his tastes began to broaden and on ABC’s “In Concert” Palmer recalled how he was influenced by a film he saw during these formative years. The 1959 film “Drum Crazy” (aka “The Gene Krupa Story”), starring American film icon Sal Mineo (“Rebel Without A Cause”, “Exodus”), captured Carl’s imagination and set him on his way – he was hooked. His biggest influences from that point forward were Krupa and drum legend Buddy Rich who would later become a close personal friend of Carl’s. For his eleventh birthday he received a new drum set and immediately began to study the instrument.  Over the next three years he studied with local instructor Tommy Cunliffe, played in a radio orchestra (the Midland Light Orchestra) and performed with his father’s dance band.
At age 14 Carl Palmer joined his first professional band, a six-month stint with The Mecca Dance Band, for which he was paid a whopping 23 pounds a week. At 15, Palmer enlisted in the Motown influenced King Bees along with Richard King on guitar, Len Cox on bass and Geoff Brown on lead vocals. The band would later be known as The Craig.
Already a respected working drummer by 16, Palmer moved on to join Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds which also featured guitar great Albert Lee (later with Eric Clapton, Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Bill Wyman & the Rhythm Kings) and keyboardist Dave Greenslade (later in Colosseum). Pete Solley would eventually replace Greenslade in the band.  Recalls Palmer, “yeah that was a blues band, a soul band with saxophones and everything. At the time, we were produced by none other than Mick Jagger.” It was Jagger who had originally discovered Farlowe. With Palmer in the band the Thunderbirds enjoyed moderate success with the single "My Way of Giving” but it was the Rolling Stones cover “Out Of Time” which propelled Farlowe to the top of the UK charts.
At the age of 18, replacing drummer Drachen Theaker, Carl Palmer joined up with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at the absolute peak of their success following the smash single “Fire” (“I am the God of Hellfire…”). Top 10 around the world and feeling the weight of success, cracks had begun to form in the band, there were personnel changes and Palmer arrived at a time when the band were touring with some of the biggest names in music. After brief rehearsals the lineup set out on an arduous U.S. tour alongside the cream of the rock world including the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Premier Cast of Hair, Iron Butterfly and others.
The concerts were bombastic, pyrotechnic spectacles bordering on insanity, including the eccentric Brown setting himself on fire in asbestos suit, and the tour was a blur for the band. Speaking to Janis Schacht of Circus Magazine Palmer recalled, “I don't know how the audiences were. I couldn't see them with Arthur Brown. I was wearing too many masks, there were too many strobe lights, it was very hard to tell. The audiences were nothing like what we have today and with Arthur being so visual you never got a chance in the band.” He added, “The audience anticipation was all Arthur's. So, musically, I was left behind. They would clap when he lit his fire helmet up. If I did something good, they wouldn't clap. Mind you, it might not have been good. I have no impressions from the last time.”
Continuing pressures, management problems, health issues and personality conflicts eventually took their toll. The disillusioned Brown became increasingly difficult and the band splintered. Speaking about Brown, Palmer recalled, “It was no use talking to him so I just left him in the middle of the night.” Carl, along with ailing keyboardist Vincent Crane, returned to the UK to form Atomic Rooster.
It was with Atomic Rooster that Carl Palmer enjoyed his first real success as a founding member of a band. Media and fans alike immediately embraced Crane, Palmer and bassist/vocalist Nick Graham as the late 60’s progressive rock scene was thriving. Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K. All the while, fueled by his brilliant drum solos, Palmer’s reputation grew as a drummer with phenomenal skill and dizzying speed.
In the spring of 1970, Carl Palmer received a phone call that changed his life forever.  Keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson, himself enjoying Top 10 U.K. success with The Nice, was forming a new band with King Crimson founder Greg Lake who had also just experienced real success with his band’s legendary “In The Court Of The Crimson King”. After trying out several drummers, including Mitch Mitchell, the two wanted Palmer to audition for a spot in the new trio but Palmer was uncertain if he wanted to leave the growing success of Atomic Rooster behind. Reluctantly, he agreed to meet and rehearse with the band and thank God he did.
The trio's first rehearsal mostly featured Nice and King Crimson standards, including "Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man”, and all three musicians describe it as a “magical feeling” when they first played together. The session blew everyone away and Palmer was offered the job right there on the spot. Still not convinced however, he told Emerson and Lake that he would need to think it over. Returning the next day to another brilliant rehearsal, Carl Palmer accepted the invitation and joined the band.
Immediately dubbed a “supergroup” by the media, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) entered the musical arena with great expectations.
In August of 1970, while they were still working on the tracks that would eventually form their first album, ELP played its first show at Plymouth, and moved on immediately to the legendary Isle of Wight Festival. Following their set, which included an explosive version of “Pictures At An Exhibition” (complete with cannons), the fallout was massive. Said Palmer of the festival, “I don’t recall how well we played. All I know is that we went down incredibly well.” Even that may have been an understatement. Perhaps signaling the path of the band itself, critical acclaim was monumental and overnight the band was thrust down the path to superstardom.
The following month the group finished its self-titled debut album, which was released in November. Instantly successful, it climbed to the Top 5 in England and the Top 20 in America. The classic single "Lucky Man" became a hit, and their stage show quickly became the stuff of legend.
The 1971 follow-up album, Tarkus, propelled the ELP’s sound in new directions and was the first real test for the band’s cohesiveness. Emerson, wanting to further experiment with the range of the Moog synthesizer, had composed a musically unorthodox, extended piece and Palmer had come up with an unusual drum pattern he wanted to incorporate. Arguments ensued and when Greg Lake, who was producing the album said he wouldn’t be involved it looked like that might be it for ELP. In the end there was agreement (or agreement to disagree) and the album, which for many came to define ELP’s sound, was released.
On the heels of Tarkus’ rise to #1 on the UK charts and Top 10 in the America, ELP arrived at Newcastle City Hall on March 21, 1971, to perform and record live their signature adaptation of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures At An Exhibition.  When released, that album too became a great success. Following a blistering schedule which saw the band touring furiously, the world over, ELP returned to the studio and released another impressive effort in “Trilogy” which saw the band’s partnership fully back in balance.
1973 saw ELP returning to touring and Carl traveling to the Guildhall School of Music in London where he studied classical timpani. That year also saw ELP return to the studio to record the album Brain Salad Surgery, perhaps the band’s definitive work. Bearing such memorable work as “Karn Evil 9”, “Still You Turn Me On” and “Jerusalem”, the album is highlighted by “Toccata”, a reworking of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera's Piano Concerto No. 1, and some of Carl Palmer’s most amazing drumming and synthesized percussion work, including the world's first electric drum solo. So incredible and original was the performance in fact that Ginastera himself endorsed the recording. "Everyone thought it was Emerson on a keyboard but it was infact, my custom made electric drums, which were built in London," says Palmer.
An insane touring schedule followed and the legendary scale and musicianship of ELP’s live show continued to grow as evidenced by the release of the epic triple live album Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, released in August 1974. Tired from a grueling four year run which had seen the release of 5 albums as well as untold hundreds of tour dates, the band decided to take a hiatus to explore other projects and to recharge their creative juices.
In reality, much of the material created during this period later went on the form the ELP albums Works, Volume I and Works, Volume II and when the band reunited for the former, a double album, it was decided that each would have a solo side followed by a forth side featuring the band as a unit. For his part, Carl Palmer’s contribution featured big band recordings recorded with 60’s and 70’s pianist & big band leader Harry South, as well as some individual tracks, including "LA '74" with guitarist Joe Walsh of the Eagles. The real gem from this period however was Palmer’s own epic “Concerto for Percussion” which, sadly, would wait nearly twenty years before finally being released.
Following the Works albums and a grandiose, bank breaking orchestral tour the band returned to the studio one last time for the album “Love Beach”. “In Concert”, a testament, to the Works orchestral tour followed and in 1979 ELP quietly disbanded and exited the musical arena.
Looking for new horizons beyond ELP Carl Palmer formed his own band, PM, for which he recruited vocalist Todd Cochran from the band Automatic Man and blues guitarist John Nitzinger, along with Erik Scott and Barry Finnerty. The band, an attempt at Top 40-style rock, released one album, entitled 1:PM, which was released in 1980 in Europe only. Success eluded the album and the band, which broke up shortly thereafter.
Opportunity knocked again for Carl Palmer when manager Brian Lane approached him in 1981. Lane was trying to put together a supergroup concept for Geffen records and, reportedly, one of his first attempts brought together Palmer along with bassist/vocalist John Wetton (U.K., King Crimson), Rick Wakeman (Yes) and guitar ace Trevor Rabin (Rabbit, Manfred Mann and later Yes). A deal with Geffen is said to have fallen through when Wakeman bailed. Still intent on his idea of a supergroup, Lane introduced John Wetton to Yes axeman Steve Howe. When that musical fit seemed right Lane brought in Palmer and keyboardist Geoff Downes (The Buggles, Yes) filled out the lineup. The group Asia was born.
Recording with Asia, and the concept of performing as a band rather than a fusing of solo artists, was something of a new experience for Carl Palmer who said, “We have tried to create a sound collectively rather than a project as individuals.” The band’s self-titled debut album “Asia” was released in 1982 and a small tour began. Palmer and Wetton have said that they had a feeling in the studio they were doing something special but no one could have been prepared for what happened next. Asia exploded on the charts, right to number one, and over 7 million copies of the album were sold worldwide.  Along the way singles such as “Heat Of The Moment”, “Only Time Will Tell”, “Wildest Dreams” and “Sole Survivor” dominated the charts for months. Asia was a perfect fit for the musical climate of the time.
“We were unique,” said Palmer. “Asia was English rock with a technical side. It's sophisticated rock mixed in with melodies and singles. It was taboo in those days. And you very rarely hear that today, either.”
After an exhausting 18-month tour, Asia followed up with their second album, Alpha, which spawned two charting hits, “Don't Cry” and “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”. With the inevitable pressures that accompany such phenomenal success came signs that Asia was beginning to come apart.
Pressures from management and personality clashes in the band finally came to head with the sudden departure of John Wetton late in 1983. Committed to a live MTV broadcast, “Asia in Asia”, Asia brought in Palmer’s old ELP mate Greg Lake to fill Wetton’s shoes. Shortly thereafter Lake went his own way, the band brought Wetton back in and Steve Howe departed the band for good.  Astra, the band’s third album, followed in 1985 with Mandy Meyer taking Steve Howe’s spot but the album failed to match the success of the earlier albums. A planned tour was abandoned and Asia went their separate ways.
In 1988 the chance came for Carl Palmer to team up once again with Keith Emerson in a new group with California-based singer/bassist Robert Berry. 3, as they were called, released their only album, To The Power Of Three, on Geffen records. Though the group received respectable FM airplay and followed with a successful club tour, their release generated little interest and they disbanded early in 1989.
Later in 1989 the Asia banner was raised once again when an invitation play a series of stadium dates with the Beach Boys brought Carl Palmer and John Wetton back into the Asia fold along with hired guns John Young and Alan Darby.  Encouraged by the reception they received, Asia arranged another tour for the fall and convinced Geoff Downes to return.
Hoping to generate interest in another Asia album the group set out on a feverish touring schedule accompanied by guitarist Pat Thrall. For the well traveled Carl Palmer it meant a return to the road and successful tours ensued in Germany, the U.K., Japan, Brazil and Russian. The Russian shows in particular represented another high in the Asia saga and were captured for posterity in the CD and video releases of Asia Live in Moscow. As Asia prepared to write a new album in 1991 John Wetton decided to leave and Carl Palmer jumped at the chance to reunite with his old mates Keith Emerson and Greg Lake in ELP.
Originally the band had only intended on writing and recording music for a planned film score but the chemistry was clearly still there and eventually it was decided that they should record an album. Signed to the newly founded Victory Records, ELP returned in 1992 with Black Moon, a strong effort produced by Mark Mancina. A video was released and an ambitious tour followed. To the surprise of many the tour was quite successful and saw ELP circle the globe on a tour that lasted from the summer of 1992 well into 1993. Recalled Palmer, “I knew we’d be OK but I never dreamed it would be to this magnitude.”
ELP headed back into the studio but problems with Keith Emerson’s right arm and production that didn’t really gel with the sound of ELP plagued the effort. In The Hot Seat was released in 1994 but failed to attract any real attention. ELP headed their own ways to concentrate on medical and personal issues but returned to touring in 1996 and over the next three years they were accompanied on the road by such notable acts as Deep Purple, Dream Theatre, Kansas and Jethro Tull. In the winter of 1998, and in the midst of great anticipation about a much hyped, forthcoming concept album Greg Lake left ELP which left Carl open to another reunion that was in the works.
The wheels had begun to turn again and excitement grew for another reunion of the Asia originals. Negotiations continued and the band began to rehearse together in February 1999, joined by guitarist Dave Kilminster. The feeling among the principals was that the magic was still there and a world tour was announced, set to begin in June. Following a world tour, Asia had hoped to record a new album and Geoff Downes and John Wetton had already begun writing songs again. Said Carl Palmer at the time: “There's some new material that is being rehearsed and recorded which will be played on the upcoming tour. I would say that there would be a new Asia album in the works for the year 2000. That's where we are at the moment.”
Unfortunately that is as far as it went. Almost as quickly as the whole project had begun it came crashing down with the announcement by Geoff Downes that he was abandoning the reunion. The event, which so many had hoped for, would have to wait. It did lead however to the brief reunion of Wetton and Palmer, along with guitarist Dave Kilminster and keyboardist John Young in the band Qango. Sporting a set list consisting of classic ELP, Asia, and King Crimson material, along with some new songs, Qango played a well-received series of dates. “It was a wonderful feeling to be back on stage playing this material with our new band,” said Palmer. “The shows went down very well and have made us excited about continuing with more tours and the recording of new material.” One memorable night even saw the band joined onstage by none other than Keith Emerson. Once again though, hope was short-lived and John Wetton departed the project leaving Palmer to ponder his next move.
Not one to sit around, Palmer set out on a schedule that included instructing drum clinics & master classes and once again set out to create his own new band and along with bassist SIMON FITZPATRICK and guitarist extraordinare PAUL BIELATOWICZ he formed the progressive trio “Palmer”. The thought of Carl Palmer assembling a progressive trio might seem like he was relying on formula, especially since the band’s material consisted mainly of ELP classics, but this was indeed a new direction. Purely guitar driven, this band put a new face on such tracks as “Toccata”, “Hoedown” and Fanfare For The Common Man” and performed them with dizzying complexity and an energy perhaps not heard since the earliest days of ELP.
Fans fortunate enough to see the group live immediately embraced their raw power and virtuosity and critics were quick to agree. Malcolm Dome of Classic Rock Magazine wrote, “The venerable Palmer, who is still great Drummer, leads his current line up though impressive reworkings of ELP music” and added, “There's an energy and edge here that belongs to (today) 2003. The music might go way back, but the musicianship is most certainly from here and now.” Tim Jones of Record Collector magazine observed, “If you like instrumental virtuosity this should sit well with you.” Palmer, the band, began touring at will.
In 1991, Carl Palmer released his much-anticipated two-disk anthology Do Ya Wanna Play, Carl. The collection showcased Palmer’s greatest recordings with ELP, Asia, Atomic Rooster plus and several rare and never-before-released tracks from every professional group had ever been in. Highlights included cuts from sessions with British rock artist Mike Oldfield, and a live track featuring Carl with his childhood idol, drum jazz icon Buddy Rich and his Orchestra.  Perhaps the biggest gem for fans was the inclusion of the piece fans had been asking for since the seventies.
 “Concerto for Percussion” made its debut fifteen years after it had been recorded. In a 1991 interview he said, “The album has been in the works since 1976, when ELP took its hiatus to do solo projects. What came of it was the WORKS double LP, with one band side and three solo sides. It was then that I did the “Percussion Concerto.” It didn’t make it to Works, Vol. 1 or Works Vol. 2. I have always wanted to release it and now it has finally come out.”
The Carl Palmer Band lineup did a highly successful US tour in 2006 and continues to tour throughout the world. Featuring Paul Bielatowicz on guitars; Simon Fitzpatrick on bass and Palmer on drums, the band will also embark on a 29 date tour of Canada, The US, and South America. The band has released a concert DVD and three acclaimed live CDs, Working Live Vol 1. Vol 2, and Vol. 3.
In 2006, Carl also regrouped for the long awaited reunion of the original ASIA, with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and John Wetton. The band has done five world tours and recorded two new studio albums PHOENIX, released on Frontiers and EMI Records in 2008, and Omega, released in the Spring of 2010.
In July 2010, Palmer also participated in a one-time reunion of ELP, staged before 30,000 at the High Voltage Festival in London.
Says Palmer: "I have the best of both worlds now. I have an active schedule with The Carl Palmer Band, and I continue to tour and record the original line up of ASIA. It is very satisfying and gratifying to know the fans are still out there and willing to support and enjoy the music I create. I hope to keep doing this for many more years to come."

HAWKWIND
Over their 30-odd year history, HAWKWIND were probably the most famous underground rock band in the world. The group was formed in the late '60s by guitarist/singer Dave BROCK, guitarist Mick SLATTERY and saxman/flautist/singer Nik TURNER. Dave BROCK was the leader of HAWKWIND and he was the captain, as it were. The band never would have made it for 30 years without Dave.
HAWKWIND's history has been marked by a series of confusing line-ups through 40 or so personnel changes. Their sound has continued to metamorphose and evolve: an almost jazz feel ("Hawkwind"), the "experimental" & acoustic sounds of early releases ("In Search of Space"), changing to the metal sound of their days (mid 70's), and a modern electronic feel on the latest ("Electric Teepee"). Yes, one can detect definite evolutions. With the primary use of the synthesizer, heavy and delay with the touch of techno, HAWKWIND practically created a genre of music that be called: psychedelic space-rock. Their creativity seems to be in the use of the synths to add to the intense moods of their songs. They were the master of the acid-space rock genre.
There are at least 100 total albums that are either compilations, EP's, bootlegs of live performances, etc. You can't go wrong with any of the 70's releases in my opinion.
"Doremi Fasol Latido" ('72) - A great album with a heavy metal space rock a-la lan Lemmy KILMISTER, who later founded MOTORHEAD.
"A Space Ritual" ('73) - The essential live album combining Space-rock music, and poetry. The GREATEST album in the world!
"Hall of the Mountain Grill" ('74) - A great album for FLOYD fans - very heavy, psychedelic music with lots of effects.
"Warrior at the Edge of Time" ('75) - In my opinion, THE classic album.
"Quark, Strangeness and Charm" ('77) - A return to a more traditional HAWKWIND sound.
"The Hawklords - 25 Years On" ('78) - This is a massive compilation of their best stuff.
"PXR 5" ('79) - This album really started the HAWKWIND tradition of semi-live, semi-studio albums.
Then you should consider the following efforts which I would recommend to the "Hawkfan":
"Levitation" ('80) - The last truly great HAWKWIND studio album.
"The Church of Hawkwind" ('82) - Really a Dave BROCK solo album. Very spacey and electronic.
"Chronicle of the Black Sword" ('85) - The last major HAWKWIND release, was a concept album inspired by their friend Michael MOORCOCK's writings.
"Palace Springs" ('91) - A strong li.

MOSTLY AUTUMN
Mostly Autumn are an English rock band. The group formed in 1995 and have built their reputation through constant touring, never signing to a major label. They produce music heavily influenced by 1970s progressive rock. According to the BBC, Mostly Autumn "fuse the music of Genesis and Pink Floyd with Celtic themes, hard rock and strong, emotional melodies".[1] They have also been compared with other progressive bands from the same era such as Jethro Tull and Camel, blended with traditional folk music. Later albums also include more contemporary influences.
Mostly Autumn was formed in the mid 1990s, the original line up included several members of Pink Floyd/1970s tribute band One Stoned Snowman. The band's founding line-up consisted of band leader Bryan Josh (vocals and guitars), along with Heidi Widdop (vocals), Iain Jennings (keyboards), Liam Davison (guitars), Alun Hughes (bass), Bob Faulds (violin), Kev Gibbons (whistles), and Chris Walton (drums). Mostly Autumn's first live shows were the former supporting the latter or vice versa; One Stoned Snowman's final concert was a farewell show in December 1995. Mostly Autumn's original rhythm section of Alun Hughes and Chris Walton left the band during 1996 to concentrate on other musical projects and family commitments respectively, and were subsequently replaced by bassist Stuart Carver and drummer Allan Scott. Shortly after this, Widdop was replaced on vocals by Heather Findlay.
This line-up recorded For All We Shared... in 1998. More line-up changes ensued however, and by the time the band recorded their second album, The Spirit of Autumn Past in 1999, Gibbons and Scott had been replaced by Angela Goldthorpe and Rob McNeil respectively.
In 2000 (as a three piece – Bryan, Heather and Angela) they achieved a support slot for Blackmore's Night on their Under a Violet Moon tour, bringing them to a wider audience. On the cover artwork for the following Blackmore's Night album Fires at Midnight (2001), Heather Findlay provided the illustration for the song "Hanging Tree".
On Mostly Autumn's third album, The Last Bright Light (2001), Rob McNeil in turn was replaced by Jonathan Blackmore (not related to Ritchie). Andy Smith replaced Stuart Carver on the bass guitar. Shortly before the band's 'V Shows' tour in 2004, Iain's brother Andrew Jennings took over on drums and percussion. By this time, the band had been praised by Rick Wright of Pink Floyd. Olivia Sparnenn joined the band in 2005 to provide additional backing vocals. Ben Matthews of Thunder stood in on keyboards for Mostly Autumn's headline gig at the Baja Prog Festival in Mexico in March 2006.[citation needed] Chris Johnson was then recruited as a permanent replacement, with Angela (now under her married name Gordon) also taking a more prominent role on keyboards.

LION SHEPHERD
While he was wandering in the fields, a lion got a thorn stuck in his paw.
He immediately went to a shepherd, wagging his tail as he said:
'Don't be afraid! I have come to ask your help; I'm not looking for food.'
The lion then lifted his paw and placed it in the man's lap. The shepherd pulled out the thorn from the lion's paw and the lion went back into the woods.
Later on, the shepherd was falsely accused of a crime and at the next public games he was released from jail and thrown to the beasts. As the wild animals rushed upon him from all sides, the lion recognized that this was the same man who had healed him. Once again the lion raised his paw and placed it in the shepherd's lap. When the king understood what had happened, he commanded that the lion be spared and that the gentle shepherd be sent back home to his family.

SPOCK’S BEARD
Spock's Beard began in 1992 when brothers Neal (lead vocals) and Al Morse (guitar) teamed up with drummer Nick D'Virgilio. After self-financing their first album, bassist Dave Meros joined, and The Light was recorded in 1994. Consisting of four lengthy songs, this debut album was well received by progressive rock fans, but received little public acclaim. Ryo Okumoto joined in 1995 to play keyboards. In 1996, The Official Bootleg was released, a live performance containing the entire first album plus one song from the upcoming second album. 1996 also saw the band sign with various record labels around the world, in addition to releasing Beware of Darkness, which contains the same style of music, but in shorter pieces (all ten minutes or less, except for the 15-plus-minute last track). Spock's Beard's third studio album, The Kindness of Strangers, was released at the end of 1997; Day for Night followed in 1999 and V was issued a year later. Deciding they had the experience and chops to attempt a concept album, they spent the next few years putting together Snow. The double album revolved around the title character, an albino teenager that could possibly be the messiah. Taking a much more detailed approach to the material, the band had a difficult two years writing the album and was rewarded with a strong promotional push from Metal Blade Records. Following Snow, Neal Morse became a born again Christian and left the band. The remaining members quickly regrouped, however, with D'Virgilio assuming the lead vocal duties and managed to release Feeling Euphoria the following year. 2004 saw the rerelease of their first three albums and in 2005 they delivered both a new studio offering (Ocatane) and Live in 2005: Gluttons for Punishment.

MAGIC PIE
MAGIC PIE started to take shape during autumn 2001. The members; Kim Stenberg (Guitars/Vocals), Gilbert Marshall (Keyboard/Vocals), Eirik Hanssen (Vocals), Jan Torkild Johannessen (Drums) & John "Mini" Kamphaug (Bass) came from a wide variety of musical background, each one previously playing in several bands and projects of different genres.
The band first started out playing cover-songs alongside a couple of their own material. After fooling around with the covers for a while, suggestions were made to cut them out completely and go for writing their own material. This proved to be a major turning point, and really set the band into work mode.
During 2001 - 2004,  John "Mini" Kamphaug was replaced with Lars Petter Holstad on bass, and Allan Olsen came onboard as the third lead vocalist - bringing a powerful voice to the table.
Intentions was to create a “progressive” sound texture in the spirit of the `70´s, and to blend musical tendencies from both back then and from today´s more modern progressive scene.
The common factor playing as the key and the link between all members, is the mutual love for listening to bands and artists a little to the “side” of what have been the mainstream rock trend in both the `80´s & `90´s, and of course the fact that the great musical “revolution” of the `70´s is firmly seated within all as no less than a fantastic source of inspiration.
Magic Pie never set out to make songs sounding like this and that, and was never interested in trying to copy someone else´s style and signature. Instead we have tried to extract the different musical/instrumental influences buried inside each member.
The debut album “Motions Of Desire” was released in 2005 and was very well received by both the public and the press.
This album really set Magic Pie on the map, and they became a household name for progfans around the world, with their blend of classic prog, 70´s hard rock and progressive metal.
They followed the success of "Motions Of Desire" and released their second album, "Circus of life"  in 2007.
They opted for a concept album, aiming to bring the heritage from the previous album a step further. "Circus Of Life" won several polls as "album of the year".
In 2011, Magic Pie released their third album "The Suffering Joy". Another concept album bringing the band a step upwards. 
This was the first radical «change» in the musical expression introducing Eirikur Hauksson (Artch, Ken Hensley) as the new lead singer - replacing Allan Olsen.
The talented Icelandic/Norwegian singer brought a much needed frontman to the band and the album showed a more mature and cohesive Magic Pie, with perhaps a harder edge to it.
After the 3rd album, Magic Pie decided it was time for a another serious «change», both due to the fact that Gilbert Marshall left the band in 2012, and a desire and need for a wider horizon and footprint in the progressive rock segment. As a result Erling Henanger acquired the keyboards, and Magic Pie signed with the Norwegian company Karisma Records.
The 4th album “King For A Day” was then released in 2015, and by the new record company, the band also was able to finally release their first and long awaited Vinyl/LP.
The album was mixed and mastered by Rich Mouser (Neal Morse, Transatlantic, Spock´s Beard) to ensure the songs and overall sound would reach its full potential.
- Another big step for Magic Pie (and the listener).
The song "Trick Of The Trade" was chosen as the first single & video, and the album is praised among critics and fans as the strongest Magic Pie album to date.
With newcomer Erling Henanger on keyboard the band have never sounded as fit, whether it’s in the studio or live..

MILES DAVIS 90E VERJAARDAG EIND MEI HERDACHT MET 2 CD RELEASES EN DE PREMIERE VAN DE BIOPIC MILES AHEAD (DON CHEADLE)

NEWS / Om de 90e verjaardag van Miles Davis (° 26/05/1926 - † 1991) te herdenken, releaset Columbia/Sony Music dit voorjaar 2 uitzonderlijke MD albums. Tegelijk (25/05) komt (via Sony Pictures Releasing ) ook de langverwachte film / Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ uit, het film epos van acteur / regisseur Don Cheadle dat een venster opent op het het leven van muzikaal genie en vernieuwer Miles Davis, zonder de duistere kanten te schuwen. De film werd onder andere op het FF van Berlijn en SXSW festival voorgesteld..

Op 1 april verscheen de soundtrack van de film ‘ MILES AHEAD ’. Deze bevat een 11tal essentiele, originele  tracks van Miles (uit de Prestige en Columbia Records catalogi), aangevuld met een paar nieuwe composities van jazz/hip-hop artist Robert Glasper (Grammy Award-winnaar getekend op BlueNote,maar ook Kendric Lamar medewerker). Op deze nieuwe tracks zijn oa Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, en rapper Pharoahe Monch te horen als guests. Het geheel is doorspect met fragmenten uit de dialogen uit de film.

 Daarnaast is er ‘EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL’, dat verschijnt op 27 mei.  Deze productie, ook in handen van Robert Glasper verzamelt een aantal classic tracks en onuitgegeven masters uit de Columbia catalogus van Miles Davis, uitgevoerd  of herwerkt door een indrukwekkende cast van hedendaagse muzikanten en performers die elk op hun eigen manier – geheel in de geest van Miles - tot deze uitzonderlijke en aparte interpretaties van deze nummers bijdragen. Bij de guests zien we oa Bilal, Illa J, Erykah Badu, Phonte, Hiatus Kaiyote, Laura Mvula, KING, Georgia Ann Muldrow, John Scofield & Ledisi, en  Stevie Wonder.

MILES AHEAD, de biopic over Miles Davis, komt uit in België op 25 mei.

Aangezien een film over een jazz legende nergens beter tot zijn recht komt dan op een jazz festival , plannen Sony Pictures en  Brussels Jazz Marathon een exclusieve avant-premiere van de film in het mooie kader van de grote zaal van de Flagey op zaterdag 21 Mei.  

Op 25 mei, na het BJM, zal de film gedurende 3 weken in Brussel en Gent te zien zijn, daarna zal hij 3 weken in Luik te zien zijn en in augustus zal hij na Jazz Middelheim 3 weken te zien zijn in Antwerpen.  

Over de Film:

MILES AHEAD is een aangrijpend portret zonder taboes van één van de grootste muzikanten uit de 20ste eeuw. De film is geïnspireerd op gebeurtenissen uit het leven van Miles Davis.   Don Cheadle speelt de hoofrol, wat hem een Oscar nominatie opleverde. Samen met Steven Baigelman schreef hij het script en Cheadle maakt zo zijn veelbelovende debuut als regisseur.

Eind jaren ’70, middenin een schitterende en productieve carrière als voorloper van modern jazz, verdwijnt Miles Davis (Cheadle) vijf jaar lang uit de schijnwerpers.  Geïsoleerd in zijn huis, lijdt hij aan een chronische pijn die veroorzaakt wordt door zijn aftakelende heup. Daarnaast lijdt Davis’ stem onder het gebruik van drugs en pijnmedicatie en worden zijn gedachten opgejaagd door verontrustende geesten uit het verleden.

Nadat de sluwe muziekreporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) zijn weg baant tot in het huis van Davis, beginnen de twee mannen onbewust aan een wild en aangrijpend avontuur om een gestolen opname van de muzikant’s laatste composities terug in handen te krijgen.

Davis’ veranderlijke gedrag wordt gestuurd door de herinneringen van zijn gestrand huwelijk met de mooie en talentvolle danseres Frances Taylor (Emayatzy Corinealdi).  Tijdens hun relatie deed Frances dienst als Davis’ muze. Het was gedurende deze periode dat hij verschillende van zijn kenmerkende opnames uitbracht, waaronder de baanbrekende “Sketches of Spain” en “Someday My Prince Will Come”. Het sprookje is echter van korte duur. Ontrouw en misbruik kenmerkt het acht jaar durende huwelijk, en Frances is gedwongen te vluchten voor haar eigen veiligheid wanneer Miles’ mentale en fysieke gezondheid achteruit gaat.

Jaren later flirt Davis, gekweld door spijt en verlies, met vernietiging totdat hij weer redding vindt in zijn kunst.

Een film geregisseerd door Don Cheadle, met in de hoofdrollen Don Cheadle (Avengers, Flight) en Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Mortdecai).

NEWS / French-Brazilian guitar virtuoso Marcelo Paganini has been away from his native Brazil for more than 11 years when he booked a last minute tour in December 2014 to release there his critically acclaimed prog rock jazz fusion album “2012 Space Traffic Jam”. Three gigs in his home town Belo Horizonte, including the private party for Marcelo's 50th anniversary, and three gigs in Rio de Janeiro where he has never played before with his band. Being also a film maker, doing what he calls “No BS films” (means “no budget/no script films”) since 2003, Paganini decided to make a rockumentary about the tour: “First time in Rio” (“Primeira vez no Rio”) 34 minutes 57 seconds, color, France, that was concluded in March 2016. There is also one extended version planned, around one hour long, with more live songs. The rock doc will be screened at Portobello Film Festival in London next September. The live soundtrack of the film is being released in April the 14th 2016 on CD Baby “First time in Rio - Marcelo Paganini Band Live”. 49 minutes of music in 6 tracks. 5 from the “2012 Space Traffic Jam” album: "Sphinxes of Babel", “Crying With a Smile”, “Somewhere Somehow”, “B4ever Now”, “Somewhere Somehow” encore and the instrumental bonus track “Trindade” used in the end credits of the film. All songs and lyrics by Marcelo Paganini.
 
As a film maker Marcelo Paganini participated in festivals in several countries (Brazil, Netherlands, Iceland, France, UK) and made, among others: “Interactivity”, an experimental film in 35 mm in 2003; signed a distribution deal in Hollywood with Big Films Short/Tigris Films in 2007 for his short “The 8th Bullet”; was selected at Short Film Corner, Cannes Film Festival in 2008 with “The 8th Bullet Samba”; got short listed on “Best Musical Film” at Portobello Film festival in 2011 with “2010 Os Mutantes - Back to Paris” and won the “69 Hours Film Challenge” during the same Festival.
 
Several top Brazilian musicians participated in the documentary “First time in Rio”: the founders (with Milton Nascimento) of the world famous mouvement “Clube da Esquina” (Corner's Club) Marcio and Lo Borges, Claudio Venturini from 14 Bis band, Marcio Buzelin from Jota Quest band, one of the most popular rock bands in Brazil, among others. Also interviewed for the film were two out of three original members of Marcelo Paganini's band in 1983, when he played his first theater show at ICBEU in Belo Horizonte and performed “Sphinxes of Babel” live for the first time, song that opens his “2012 Space Traffic Jam” album released in 2014.
 
On this tour Marcelo Paganini had a great band in Belo Horizonte with Leo Javali on bass, Walner Lucas on keys and Christian Weber on drums. They played to a full house at Gilboa, the crowd sang along, danced and went wild. There are many videos on-line. They also played the birthday party and the last gig in town at Livraria Status, an open air show which was almost canceled because of the rain. People came anyway with umbrellas and at the end the sun showed up as well.
 
In Rio, Marcelo Paganini also got some of the best musicians in town, therefore in the country: Milton Nascimento's keyboard player Kiko Continentino, with whom he had a jazz duo back in 1987. Almost 30 years later, they connected together again like no time had passed, and shared adventurous and burning hot improvisations. Kiko Continentino is one of the most exciting keyboard players in prog rock today and joined one year ago legendary Brazilian jazz band Azymuth. Sergio Brandao, the first call Brazilian bass player in New York City, and Paganini's friend for over 25 years also joined his band for the Rio leg of the tour. Cassia Eller's (one of the top Brazilian rock singers who died in 2001) drummer Elcio Cafaro was thrilled to accept the invitation for the shows. Elcio was on the cover of Modern Drummer Magazine Brazil last January. With only two half rehearsals the band fusioned around the complex compositions playing with fire and passion like if they have always played together. The first show was at Audio Rebel on December the 22nd. The 23rd it was at Godofredo Rio and the final gig of the tour was at Vizta on the 27th. The CDs sold out during the tour but are still available on line. Marcelo Paganini came back to France without knowing if or when he will come back to Brazil.
 
There was an  overwhelming response on the Internet when the video of “Somewhere Somehow” on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/13255032254/videos/10153135644402255/  More than a thousand video views in a single day! As Marcelo Paganini puts it: “There are two versions of the song on the live album, completely different from each other, always fresh approach, instant group composition. The encore was melting the walls. Gary Hobish from A. Hammer Mastering in San Francisco did an awesome job, this was one of the best shows in my life  and I am glad to share it with the world.  Once you walk in the right direction the whole Universe conspires to help you. Sounds like ready-made wisdom, but it turns out to be true. If you try to please everybody you will fail and go crazy. 'My music will please somebody else, at least I now it pleases itself'(from “Somewhere Somehow”). Sometimes when you don't know what are you doing means you also don't know it can't be done. It is all about letting interesting accidents happen. The music industry is obsessed with audio quality, and rightly so. Me too. But in 2016 people are listening to music on their phones, on ear buds and on computer speakers. Some people, me for example, prefer to hear an spectacular performance with less than ideal sound quality, rather than a lifeless musical noise perfectly recorded. Robert Johnson rules. Same thing applies to my film. It is no budget, not Hollywood, capisco? Do it yourself Mode: ON. If you put ten or more people in there with lights, wires and stuff, nothing spontaneous can happen, or rarely happens. It is completely artificial. Everybody else goes around trying to make 'good' films, but we all know most films are 'bad'. I only go around to make 'bad' films. Since I can't do anything right, even starve as a musician/film maker after all these years, maybe at the end my films will be 'good'. At least to the right audience. You can not be everything to everybody. The trouble is not being pretentious, the trouble is being up to the pretension. I went there for one month alone with just one old camera, one suitcase, one guitar, one effects rack, one old laptop computer. I made two bands, rehearsed a little bit, played 6 shows made a film, and a live recording out of it. I edited and posted on line several videos. I also composed a couple of songs and did some recordings. How many people can do that?  I mean, most people go to Brazil for a month and do nothing but stay in the beach until they turn red shrimp. And my mom asking when I am going to have a real job... The content is the most important thing, even with rough edges. I make stuff happen in front of my lonely camera, I direct the REALITY. I found my public at Portobello Film Festival, we feel the same way. "
 
After being added by organizers Rael and JoJo Razor at the last minute to play with the After Hours Electric Prog Jam on the Cruise to the Edge 2015, Marcelo Paganini stunned the audience at the pre-sail party at Magic City Casino in Miami with a very emotional (it was the following day of the Paris Attacks) and breath taking interpretation, even after breaking the D string of his guitar in the middle of a very demanding King Crimson song and keep playing to the end. The performance was shot with 5 cameras and will be available on-line soon. One camera video is already on-line. There was no rehearsals, no scores, no sound check, some musicians met on stage for the first time. They are all passengers of the cruise who organizes themselves over the Internet to play the most demanding prog rock songs without rehearsing. Famous musicians from YES and other bands joined the jam during the late hours.
 
Cruising from Miami to the Bahamas and back, Marcelo Paganini rocked the ship. Check out the pictures and videos already on-line. Paganini also re-connected with YES bass player Billy Sherwood who agreed to record one song with original YES keyboard player Tony Kaye on the follow up to his album “2012 Space Traffic Jam”. Gary Husband will record the drums once again, with Marc Madore on bass. Eumir Deodato is also expected to come back on keyboards in a couple of songs. The album is still in the early stages, Paganini composed a couple of very promising tracks that gave him the confidence to push the project forward. The idea is to record later this year and release it in 2017. There will be another Cruise to the Edge in February 2017 and Marcelo Paganini is hoping, like all the other prog acts not already in the bill, to be invited with his band by Larry Morand. “Cruise to the Edge was one of the best experiences in my life. It was very touching to see several people asking for my band on the cruise's group, it went straight to my heart. Guitar Player Magazine showed interest in sharing my memories, pictures and videos from CTTE 2015 in a blog that will be on-line soon. Marcelo Paganini is currently looking for a singer to record with him, “someone ideally living in France or Europe who loves prog rock jazz fusion, digs my music and has no trouble with odd time signatures and strange melodies and harmonies. I wish Glenn Hughes would be interested, even if he lives in LA. ” Paganini is also looking for a keyboard player to do a couple of gigs in France later in 2016 or early in 2017, “someone glad to learn the parts on the album and who can improvise wildly. The ideal person would also sing to keep the band a quartet and may record on the next album too.  If you are interested send me a message on Facebook with some video links”. Paganini recorded most of the keyboards himself on his last album, and wish he had Shiva-like extra arms to play guitar and keys at once. The live band in France has Marcelo Paganini on guitar, Marc Madore on bass and Christophe Bras on drums, they have been together for many years. They will start recording Marcelo Paganini's new studio album later this year, for a release in early 2017. JAZZ MIDDELHEIM DOET OPROEP AAN FESTIVALGANGERS OM IN PERSOONLIJK MIDDELHEIM-ARCHIEF TE DUIKEN

NEWS / Van 12 t/m 16 augustus loopt de 35e editie van Jazz Middelheim in Park den Brandt te Antwerpen en die feestelijke editie zal het festival naar het hart van Antwerpen voeren. De Scheldestad wordt immers één grote expositieruimte waar men op 35 verrassende plekken beeldmateriaal zal kunnen vinden uit de rijke geschiedenis van Jazz Middelheim, en dat sinds 1969.

Er wordt dan ook een oproep gedaan aan iedereen die ooit op de festivalsite aanwezig was en daar verrassende, ontroerende, originele of gewoon leuke foto’s nam.  

“Jazz Middelheim is een van de oudste jazzfestivals van ons land”, zegt festivaldirecteur Bertrand Flamang. “We willen daarom die geschiedenis graag vertellen door de ogen van de bezoekers. Jazz Middelheim richt zich immers niet alleen tot jazzliefhebbers, maar profileerde zich al die jaren ook als een breed cultureel muzikaal feest in een gemoedelijke ongedwongen sfeer, dat ook de harten van families en jongeren wist te veroveren”.

“Uiteraard zetten we deze expo niet op met alleen podiumfoto’s of eigen beeldmateriaal”, vervolgt Bertrand Flamang, “maar we vragen ook aan de festivalgangers om in hun persoonlijk archief te duiken en foto’s op te snorren die dan mogelijkerwijs ook worden geëxposeerd op een van de 35 locaties in de stad. Het kan zowel gaan om intieme snapshots als grote prints, zowel sfeer- als panoramische foto’s.”

Aangezien de foto’s sinds 1969 zowel analoog als digitaal aangemaakt kunnen zijn, zal er eerst een selectie gemaakt worden van wat spontaan binnenkomt. Vanaf woensdag 20 april start de inzameling van alle materiaal in de bibliotheek van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. Iedereen die over beeld- en archiefmateriaal beschikt en dat ter beschikking wil stellen van de tentoonstelling kan het materiaal daar afleveren en midden juni in dezelfde staat weer oppikken.

Ancienne Belgique organiseert gratis concertavond in het teken van Europa

NEWS / Voor het tweede jaar op rij organiseert de Ancienne Belgique een avond die volledig in het teken staat van Europa. De Belgische groep Puggy is de hoofdact, met een live-interview gevolgd door verschillende optredens. Dat maakt de concertzaal bekend in een persbericht.
Puggy zal in de AB Club een exclusief live-interview houden met het publiek. Daarin zullen ze het hebben over hun Europese roots en ervaringen op internationale podia. Na het gesprek volgt nog een korte akoestische set. Aansluitend zijn er optredens van Last Train (Frankrijk), Memoria de Peixe (Portugal) en Indian Askin (Nederland), drie beloftevolle bands die de kans krijgen om zich te tonen aan het Belgische publiek. De concerten zijn gratis, enkel voor het live-interview met Puggy moet je vooraf inschrijven. De avond wordt ingeleid door Jonathan Hill, de hoofd-speechschrijver van Jean-Claude Juncker, voorzitter van de Europese Commissie.

Het evenement is onderdeel van het Liveurope-platform, dat 13 Europese concertzalen verenigt. Dat platform wordt vanuit Brussel door de Ancienne Belgique gecoördineerd en kan sinds eind 2014 rekenen op de steun van de Europese Unie. Het platform spoort concertzalen aan om zoveel mogelijk Europees talent speelkansen te geven.
"Op deze symbolische dag willen we het Brusselse en Europese publiek samenbrengen in de AB. Met Liveurope willen we bewijzen dat wat ons verenigt sterker is dan de woorden van zij die verdeling willen zaaien", zegt Dirk De Clippeleir, directeur van de AB, in het persbericht. (Bron: Belga)

Linda Ronstadt opens up about Parkinson's

NEWS / Legendary singer Linda Ronstadt recently made a rare public appearance in San Jose, Ca. KGO was at her sold out show where she discussed her Parkinson's diagnosis. 
"I can't sing anymore. That's that. I can still sing in my brain but I can't sing. It's just the way it is. If you're going to have Parkinson's you better have a sense of humor. Because somebody wants to surprise you with Mr. Toad's wild ride -- you wake up in the morning and you have this collection of symptoms, you don't know what's going to show up," said Ronstadt.
The show was a retrospective, focusing on memories of her successul career and how she has been coping with Parkinson's  disease.

NEWS / De iconische zanger, songwriter, producer en performer Rick Astley heeft de release van zijn zevende album aangekondigd. Verwijzend naar de mijlpaal die Astley eerder dit jaar bereikte, draagt het album dat op 17 juni wordt uitgebracht de toepasselijke titel ‘50’. 
Fans hebben al een voorproefje kunnen horen met de eerste single “Keep Singing” die op 7 april online beschikbaar werd gemaakt. De officiële videoclip is sinds de release meer dan een miljoen keer bekeken.  
Met ‘50’ keert Astley als artiest en songwriter terug naar zijn muzikale roots, waarbij hij met zijn onderscheidende, soulvolle stem, dit keer met Gospel invloeden, zijn ervaringen en inspirerende momenten uit het afgelopen decennium op papier heeft gezet. Reflecterend, kwetsbaar, uplifting en open-minded; enkele aspecten van Astley’s muzikale vakmanschap die op ‘50’ naar voren komen. Daarnaast speelde de Grammy genomineerde hitmaker zelf elk instrument in op het album.

NEWS / Na eerdere edities in Berlijn (2x), Toulouse, Riga en de succesvolle 5de editie vorig jaar in het Ancienne Belgique-theater in Brussel,  vond de 6de editie van de European Blues Challenge plaats op 8 en 9 april in Torrita di Siena in Toscane in Italië. Dit “Eurosongfestival van de Blues”, met zijn 21 deelnemende landen, is een initiatief van de European Blues Union, die 29 verschillende nationaliteiten onder haar leden telt. Eric “Slim” Zahl & The South West Swingers uit Noorwegen werd door de Europese vakjury tot winnaar uitgeroepen. België werd vertegenwoordigd door Tiny Legs Tim.

Meteen maken we werk van de Belgische selectie voor de 7de editie van de European Blues Challenge in Horsens in Denemarken in 2017. De Belgische vertegenwoordiger zal op 15 oktober door een vakjury gekozen worden tijdens de live finale van de Belgian Blues Challenge 2016 in De Casino Concertzaal in Sint-Niklaas. Tyler Brand & The Shakedown zal hiermee vooreerst het Europese continent betreden. De nodige ervaring hiervoor hebben ze echter wel want ze deelden al eerder het podium met o.a. Eric Sardinas (born November 10, 1970) is an American blues-rock slide guitarist born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is noted for his use of the electric resonator guitar and his live performances. He sometimes sets his guitar alight on stage and during shows. In 2000 in Sydney, Sardinas suffered third degree burns to his left wrist.

Sardinas began to play the guitar at age six and leaned toward vintage recordings by such Delta bluesmen as Charlie Patton, Bukka White, Big Bill Broonzy, Elmore James, and Muddy Waters. Although he was left-handed, he eventually started to play right-handed.

In 2002, he featured on the Bo Diddley tribute album Hey Bo Diddley - A Tribute!, performing the song "Ride On Josephine".

He signed to Steve Vai's Favored Nations record label and was the opening act for Vai's The Real Illusions Tour 2005 around the world.

In 2008, Sardinas released Eric Sardinas and Big Motor on Steve Vai's Favored Nations record label in the U.S.

Massive Attack komt op 28 augustus 2016 terug naar ons land voor een openluchtconcert op het Gentse Sint-Pietersplein. Voor hun exclusief zomerconcert (het enige in de Benelux) verkozen ze het indrukwekkende kader van het Sint-Pietersplein. Met de prachtige Sint-Pietersabdij op de achtergrond, zal de beleving van een Massive Attack- show nog intenser zijn.

Sinds het begin van de jaren ’90 is Massive Attack de ultieme vaandeldrager van uitdagende muziek. In een recent verleden lieten ze in Luik (Les Ardentes), Brugge (Cactusfestival) en Brussel (Ancienne Belgique en Paleis 12) een verpletterende indruk achter met weinig voor de hand liggende muziek. De enscenering (teksten in lokale taal op de lichtkrant), indrukwekkende gasten (Horace Andy, Deborah Miller en Martina Topley-Bird), politieke thema’s, bezwerende ritmes en apocalyptische sfeer, zorgden voor een onvergetelijke ervaring. Niemand kan de wereld aantrekkelijker een geweten schoppen dan 3D en Daddy G.

Bij Massive Attack oversteeg de kwaliteit steeds de kwantiteit. Hun debuut ‘Blue Lines’ ontketende in 1991 met de singles ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ en ‘Safe from Harm’ een revolutie in de populaire muziek en betekende de geboorte van een genre dat (even) later als triphop omschreven zou worden. De opvolgers ‘Protection’, ‘Mezzanine’ en ‘100th Window’ hadden elk hun unieke identiteit en bevatten intrigerende parels die in 2006 op ‘Collected’ verzameld werden. In 2010 volgde ‘Heligoland’.

Begin dit jaar bracht Massive attack een app ‘Fantom’ en een EP ‘Ritual Spirit’ uit: vier verse nummers die ze samen met Tricky (herenigd na 22 jaar), Young Fathers, Roots Manuva en nieuwkomer Azekel creëerden. Voor de video-clips strikten ze John Hawkes (“Take it There”) en Kate Moss (“Ritual Spirit”). Tijdens hun passage in Paleis 12 werden deze broeierige nummers door pers en publiek zeer warm onthaald.

De groep kondigde voor 2016 nog een tweede EP en een volwaardige langspeler aan. In afwachting van deze nieuwe releases, doen ze wat ze het best kunnen: live optreden, ditmaal op een unieke locatie!

We kondigden reeds 30 acts aan, waaronder o.a. Balthazar, ZAZ, Tourist LeMC, Trixie Whitley, The Colorist & Emiliana Torrini, Dez Mona, Afro Celt Sound System, Tout Va Bien, Yevgueni, Flying Horseman en Hayseed Dixie.  Daar voegen we nu aan toe: Michael Kiwanuka, Arno, An Pierlé, Nahko and Medicine For The People, Alaverdi, Will Pound & Eddy Jay, Tiny Legs Tim, Ethno Flanders en Riguelle chante Brel.
Michael Kiwanuka werd beroemd toen hij opgepikt werd door Jools Holland en daarna ook de ‘BBC Sound of 2012’ won. Zijn soulvolle debuutplaat ‘Home Again’ scheerde hoge toppen en singles ‘Home Again’ en ‘Tell Me A Tale’  behoren reeds tot het collectief muzikaal erfgoed. De prachtige, nieuwe single ‘Black Man In A White World’ is de voorloper van zijn nieuwe album ‘Love & Hate’, dat eind mei verschijnt. Folky souljazz van wereldniveau!

Arno's stomende live-sets zijn even legendarisch als memorabel. Met zijn mélange van rauwe blues, etnische invloeden, rock, reggae en chanson staat Arno al decennia op het voorplan van de Belgische muziekscene. Op zijn nieuw album 'Human Incognito’ gooit hij terug Engels en Frans bewust door elkaar. Live zullen zijn nieuwe songs natuurlijk afgewisseld worden met een waslijst aan classics zoals ‘Les Filles Du Bord De Mer’, ‘O La La La’ en ‘Putain Putain’. Het wordt zijn vierde passage op Festival Dranouter!

‘Arches’, het nieuwe album van An Pierlé verschijnt in april en vindt zijn oorsprong in 2012, tijdens Odegand. Daar blaasde ze in het kader van haar toenmalige 'Stadscomponistenschap' het stof uit de pijpen van het orgel in de Gentse Sint-Jacobskerk. ‘Arches’ is een verzameling van songs gebouwd rond een kerkorgel en hemelse harmonieën. Als je weet dat in de kerk van Dranouter nog een speelkaar orgel staat, dan zou dit wel eens een bijzonder en uniek concert kunnen worden!
Met zowel Filipijns, Puerto Ricaans als indiaans bloed in de aderen is Nahko een echte man van de wereld. Geïnspireerd door Amerikaanse storytellers als Bob Dylan en Bright Eyes brengt hij samen met zijn band 'Medicine For The People' folkrock, roots, world en hiphop. Voor fans van Michael Franti en Xavier Rudd!
Riguelle & band zetten hun tanden in het onnavolgbare oeuvre van Brel. Verwacht je aan een selectie songs uit de begindagen in de Parijse cabarets tot de periode van zelfverbanning naar de Marquise-eilanden in de Stille Oceaan. Zowel de klassiekers als ook het minder bekende werk van Le Grand Jacques komen aan bod. Een concert vol passionele en poëtische Belgitude.

Tiny Legs Tim bewijst dat hedendaagse blues veel meer kan zijn dan het herkauwen van de bestaande vormen. Hij ontwikkelde op korte tijd een zeer persoonlijke stijl en inhoudelijk overstijgt hij moeiteloos alle clichés. Swampy rhythm & blues en een swingende New Orleans vibe, Tiny Legs Tim is anno 2016 beter dan ooit. 

Alaverdi is een Georgisch kwartet dat nieuwe zuurstof geeft aan de eeuwenoude traditie van polyfonische gezangen. Hun songs verzamelen alle facetten die de zangkunst zo mooi maken: van diepe bas, sterke bariton over tenor tot hoge en wilde falsetto’s, telkens versterkt en aangevuld met traditionele Georgische snaar –en blaasinstrumenten. 
Will Pound is één van 's werelds beste harmonicaspelers, zijn vernieuwende stijl verlegt de grenzen van het instrument en het genre ‘folk’ op zich. Samen met Eddy Jay, een heuse virtuoos op de accordeon, staat hij garant voor een adembenemende nieuwe folk sound waarbij beide instrumenten op een magische manier samensmelten. Of zoals de Britse singer-songwriter Passenger reeds zei: “These guys are amazing!”

Ethno Flanders presenteert op zondag het resultaat van een muzikale wereldreis. Gedurende een week komen 60 jonge muzikanten van over de hele wereld samen om elkaars (traditionele) muziek te leren spelen.

NEWS / Lionel Richie is set to receive the Songwriters Hall of Fame's most prestigious honour in June (16).
The Dancing on the Ceiling singer will follow in the footsteps of songwriters including Carole King, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Stephen Sondheim when he receives the Johnny Mercer Award, the Hall of Fame's highest honour - reserved for artists whose work "upholds the gold standard" set by the late Mercer.
"Lionel's songs made you love and dance and will last forever in American culture; but he truly demonstrated the power of songwriting with his masterful co-writing of the global song We Are The World with Michael Jackson," said songwriting duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff in a statement to USAToday.com.
The musicians, who are in their inaugural year as co-chairmen of the Songwriters Hall, received the Johnny Mercer Award in 2014.
Lionel will receive his prize on 9 June (16) at New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel, while Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Nile Rodgers and Chip Taylor will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Marvin Gaye and Nile's late Chic bandmate Bernard Edwards will be inducted posthumously.
Lionel's illustrious career is still going strong after spawning hits including Three Times a Lady, Hello and All Night Long. In February (16) he was honoured at the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony, where fellow music star Stevie Wonder shared some kind words. They first collaborated in 1985 for a group performance of We are the World, which Lionel penned alongside late singer Michael Jackson.
"As you know he's a great songwriter, a great musician and most of all a great human being," Stevie told Access Hollywood, recalling the concert.
"The truth of the matter is that we are honouring a man who was part of the duo who wrote a song that changed the world. We all came together in the spirit of love and doing something to make a difference. It literally woke the world up, through the idea and concept of giving back to our fellow man."

With over 50 minutes of new music, the extra album will sweeten the wait until August!
 
Tarja explains:
Surprise, surprise! I genuinely hope that 'The Brighest Void' is a pleasant surprise to each and every one of you. During the long process of recording the songs for my new studio album 'The Shadow Self', I realised that there were so many tracks, too many too dear to me, for just one album. So this time I decided to keep nothing for myself and to share all my favourite new songs with you, the fans, who have shown such passionate and constant support.

'The Brighest Void' gives more than a first taste of 'The Shadow Self'; it is a full album filled with 9 songs! I am sure that everyone will immediately discover how much 'The Brighest Void' and 'The Shadow Self' are entwined with each other but, at the same time, are two independent records which stand on their own. I hope the release of the prequel sweetens the wait until August and that you will like the songs as much as I do. NEWS / Hellstar brengt hun nieuwe single ‘Black Cathedral’ uit op 8 april via iTunes. Het nummer komt uit het nieue album ‘Vampiro’ dat later dit jaar zal uitkomen via de EMP Label Group van Megadeth bassist David Ellefson bij wie Helstar onlangs tekende.
 
‘Black Cathedral’ en ‘Vampiro’ werden gemixt door Bill Metoyer die gekend is voor zijn werk met Slayer, Aromred Saint, W.A.S.P., en Sacred Reich.
‘Vampiro’ handelt over dracula en vampieren net zoals helstar’s meest gepreze album ‘Nosferatu’ uit 1989.
 
Helstar werd opgerinch in de vroege jaren tachtig en maakte er meteen werk van om op te treden in kleine clubs en party’s. Al snel werd duidelijk dat Helstar meer te bieden had dan hun tijdsgenoten en Combat Records tekende de band om in 1984 het debuut ‘Burning star’ uit te brengen. Dit debuut werd gevolgde door ‘Remnants Of War’ en hun doorbraak album ‘A Distant Thunder’ uit 1988. Dit succes werd nogmaals bevestigd met ‘Nosferatu’ in 1989.

PAUL SIMON KOMT IN JUNI MET DERTIENDE STUDIOPLAAT

NEWS/ Paul Simon brengt op 3 juni zijn dertiende studioalbum uit. De plaat, die Stranger To Stranger gaat heten, is de opvolger van So Beautiful Or So What uit 2011.

Simon kondigde donderdag niet alleen zijn nieuwe plaat aan, hij bracht ook meteen een nieuw nummer uit. Wristband, de eerste single van Stranger To Stranger, is te beluisteren via YouTube.

De nieuwe plaat is een vrij experimenteel album. "Het gaat erom iets op een nieuwe manier te laten horen. Het gaat over het maken van muziek die tegelijkertijd oud en nieuw klinkt, muziek met een beetje mysterie", zegt Simon over Stranger To Stranger, waarop elf nummers staan.

Voor zijn dertiende album werkte de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter samen met onder meer de Italiaanse dance-artiest Clap! Clap! en een groep flamenco-artiesten. "Geluid is net zozeer een thema van dit album als de onderwerpen van de liedjes. Als mensen dat begrijpen, ben ik tevreden."
