Following their 2016 EP release No Worries, the Justin Saladino Band brought their music to audiences at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Tremblant International Blues Festival, Rogers Cup, Trois-Rivière en Blues and the Toronto Blues Society Blues Summit. In 2018, at the 21st annual Maple Blues Awards the Justin Saladino Band was nominated for “New Artist of the Year.” The group's first LP, A Fool’s Heart is set for release on May 11, 2018.
At 23 years old, Justin has been on the scene for over a decade. Having performed alongside the likes of Victor Wainwright, Steve Strongman, Frank Marino, Paul Deslauriers, Jack de Keyzer, and Ronnie Baker Brooks; he’s seen first hand how it’s done. Learning from the masters and translating these experience into his own project, the Justin Saladino Band puts on a dynamic show, demonstrating a wide palette of sounds from heavy blues/rock riffs to folky acoustic tones all while keeping the audience grooving. "Growing up with a plethora of music at my fingertips, I’ve made daily travels into the time machines recorded by my heroes", says Saladino. "Developing a taste and ear for sounds that bleed over the genres and generations of the past century, this record is an amalgam of the music that has touched me up to now." His heart and real passion however was and will always be in music. He studied guitar and music business at Musicians Institute Hollywood and currently resides in Los Angeles. “Ramin's record is a concept album with an entirely new idea: twenty six guitarists playing on the same song progression. Each one provides a different approach and musical direction with a huge range of styles. After 9 months of a very turbulent relationship it felt as if she ripped my beating heart out alive, stepped on it with long high heels and started twitching. I moved 1550 miles away and it took me 1 and a half years to digest this emotionally. The song reflects on the moods, my pain and struggle at this time, the emotional wounds and the overcoming of this demon over the following years. Have you ever been in front of an art painting and thought 'yeh, its kind of nice but it doesn't really speak to me' and then someone explained you a few things about the artist, what he had in mind when he created the work and what he was trying to say with it, and suddenly the painting lit up and shone in a complete new light for you and you saw it with completely different eyes and loved it? When he was a young youth, he wanted to sing like Billy Joel, but was too fearful. It wasn’t until after Hurricane Katrina and the failure of our Federal levees that his strength through tragedy gave him the opportunity to find his singing voice. It was when he visited a healing prophet to find healing, that she told Lemmler, he “was a singer” and the spirit of Frank Sinatra had a message for her to give to him. The message was “Follow your passion and don’t let anyone else knock you down and off your path. People can knock a guy down flat, but you need to get up and do your thing.” Shortly after that visit, Lemmler started singing and he remembers the first song he sang to a dear friend was “In My Life,” the title track for Love. This was the spark to the idea of Love, tunes like “And So it Goes,” another Billy Joel song, fit nicely with tunes like “Open Arms,” and classics like “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads”, that were also inspired by love and passion. A Lemmler original “When She Looks at Me” is his offering, an homage to a well-penned tune, inspired by the likes of such composers as Billy Joel, Max Steiner or Lionel Richie. Love is deeply inspired by Lemmler’s heroes. Some of his childhood all-time favorite musicians, composers, lyricists, piano, rock star heroes!! “I basically wanted to be the MC5. The attack! They were really on! They were brilliant!” - Lemmy MC5 was an American rock band from Lincoln Park, Michigan, formed in 1964. The original band line-up consisted of vocalist Rob Tyner, guitarists Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith, bassist Michael Davis, and drummer Dennis Thompson. The MC5's leftist political ties and anti-establishment lyrics and music positioned them as emerging innovators of the punk movement in the United States. Their loud, energetic style of back-to-basics rock and roll included elements of garage rock, hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelic rock. MC5 had a promising beginning which earned them a January 1969 cover appearance in Rolling Stone and a story written by Eric Ehrmann before their debut album was released. They developed a reputation for energetic live performances, one of which was recorded as their 1969 debut album Kick Out the Jams. In 1972, just three years after their debut record, the band came to an end. MC5 was often cited as one of the most important American hard rock groups of their era. Déjà-Vous? contains live renditions of eight tracks: four from Laisse ça être, three from the band's previous releases, and an impromptu version of the jazz standard 'My Funny Valentine' (listen here). Most songs have been thoroughly rearranged for the occasion, and some of the pieces were used as source material for some interesting editing work, on the B-side of the LP. A well-kept secret until recently, Aquaserge has been a subterranean driving force in the international music scene, inspiring and influencing many musicians. The band’s members have also been involved with Tame Impala, Stereolab, Melody's Echo Chamber, Aksak Maboul and Acid Mothers Temple. Het evenement vindt plaats op twee podia in twee grote tenten (zonder overlappingen!). Het Roots podium voor folk, het akoestische en meer traditionele genre. Op het andere podium, Roses, hebben we het meer elektrische genre, vol energie en actueel. Het eerste is eerder country/landelijk, het tweede heeft een meer urban/stedelijke dynamiek. Zelden combineert een festival deze twee variaties van Amerikaanse populaire muziek. Nochtans een evidentie... De dubbele persoonlijkheid van Roots & Roses en de atmosfeer van het evenement sluiten ook perfect aan bij de locatie van het festival: een groene omgeving in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van de Lessense steengroeven en het stedelijk centrum. Een oase van rust en een relaxte sfeer... en vlak bij de snelweg en het treinstation. Een team van meer dan vijftig koks die jongleren met lokale en biologische ingrediënten van uitstekende kwaliteit staan voor u klaar. Dit jaar kunt u proeven van de Mexicaanse, Japanse, Italiaanse, Mauritiaanse, Belgische, Spaanse en Cambodiaanse keuken. Voor velen is deze combinatie alleen al de moeite waard om naar het festival af te zakken. Een andere headliner is Tjens Matic waarin Arno de punk blues van Tjens Couter heruitvindt. Een groep op maat van Roots & Roses! Het vurige 100% vrouwelijke Darts, Guadalupe Plata uit Spanje en JD Wilkes & The Shack Shakers zullen voor de eerste maal te zien zijn in België. Drie uitzonderlijke bands in hun respectievelijke genres. Er is ook een samenwerking tussen Bota Nights en Roots & Roses om op beide festivals een gemeenschappelijke act te brengen van de Belgische groep Cocaine Piss en de Deense saxofonist Mette Rasmussen. De band zal het festival openen met zijn ongelooflijke energieke rock. Op het Roots-podium zal een andere getalenteerde band uit eigen land de spits afbijten: Crystal & Runnin'Wild! Waarschijnlijk één van onze enige rockabilly-formaties van internationaal niveau. Verder laten de jonge Engelsen van Yak een frisse bries over de weide waaien met hun garagerock, terwijl Fifty Foot Combo en hun garage-surf, Left Lane Cruiser met hun rock blues en Dead Bronco met hun “Americana Sludge” na lang wachten dit jaar eindelijk van de partij zullen zijn. Names, darling: Tony Joe White (US) Het neusje van de zalm van de Swamp Blues. Jarenlang in duo, vergezeld door een drummer, komt hij het best tot zijn recht. We kennen hem van nummers als “Polk Salad Annie” en “Steamy Windows”. Hij schreef voor Elvis, Ike en Tina Turner. Er wordt zelfs gezegd dat hij Jack White en White Stripes beïnvloed heeft. Eén van de laatste reuzen van de blues ... Black Lips (US) De Flower Punk van de Black Lips op Roots & Roses! Een smerig geluid, giftige songs waaruit fantastische melodieën tevoorschijn komen op een parodische achtergrond, somber en vol sluimerende agressiviteit. Het is met trots dat we deze deugnieten verwelkomen. En als kers op deze druipende cake zal hun oude bekende King Khan vlak voor hen optreden ... Tjens Matic (B) Voor de eerste keer kijkt Arno in de achterruitkijkspiegel van zijn carrière. Met Tjens Matic bezoekt hij opnieuw het repertoire van zijn twee eerste formaties: de vuile en gemene blues van Tjens Couter en de Belgische punk van TC Matic. Een repertoire gesneden op maat voor Roots & Roses. The Blasters (US) The Blasters, na bijna 40 jaar nog altijd door Phil Alvin geleid. Het zijn iconen van de rockabilly- en rock'n roll-scene van de jaren tachtig net zoals de Paladins, the Stray Cats en de Fabulous Thunderbirds. Het grote publiek herkent hun geluid door de hit "Dark Night", uit de film from “Dusk till Down” van Tarantino / Rodriguez. King Khan & the Shrines (CA/DE) Langzaamaan is King Khan een vaste waarde geworden op Roots & Roses. Dit jaar komt hij met zijn Shrines bij ons terug. Een excentrieke en humorvolle groep, ondergedompeld in een mix van soul, jazz, gospel en natuurlijk rock'n roll. Er wordt gefluisterd dat zijn dochter Saba Lou meereist naar Roots & Roses. Dit alles op dezelfde affiche als de Black Lips. Dead Bronco (US/ES) Dead Bronco komt uit Bilbao. Deze band wordt geleid door de Amerikaan Matt Horan, omringd door een stevige Iberische line-up. De groep speelt op traditionele akoestische instrumenten, zoals banjo, akoestische gitaar, contrabas, mandoline, maar met effecten die specifiek zijn voor elektrische instrumenten. In dienst van een country-punkrock met het mooiste effect: zij noemen het zelf “American Sludge”. Left Lane Cruiser (US) Dit duo staat met hun rauwe en directe geluid geheel in de lijn van de oude bluesmannen van de Mississippi, van de onlangs verdwenen generatie van RL Burnside of T-Model Ford, naar voren gebracht door Jon Spencer in de jaren 90. Het duo speelt een eenvoudige blues, directe en krachtige, gemengde garagerock. The Darts (US) Een frisse wind blaast over de garage rock. Deze verkwikkende bries heet The Darts. Een vrouwelijk kwartet in de machowereld van de rock'n roll-scene. Als je het geluid van garage 60's, goed geplaatste riffs, een vleugje gekte van the Cramps en het enthousiasme van Black Rebel Motorcycle Club mixt, zijn we zeker gewonnen voor deze girlsband. De band wordt geleid door Nicole "The Judge" Laurenne. Het wordt hun eerste Belgische optreden op Roots & Roses maken met deze formatie. Deze vier meiden hebben ook de nieuwe versie van het nummer Rots & Roses gemaakt dit jaar. Guadalupe Plata (ES) Het stond in de sterren geschreven dat de editie van 2018 in het teken van Spanje zou staan! Na Dead Bronco zal er nog een geweldige Spaanse band op het Rots Podium spelen: Guadalupe Plata! Stel je voor dat Hound Dog Taylor gereïncarneerd is met zijn House Rockers in de diepten van Andalusië, dat hij nog steeds zijn duivelsmuziek verspreidt, maar in het Spaans, met bijtende, Spaanse humor. Het resultaat is Guadalupe Plata! Eén van de toppers van de editie van 2018. Hun eerste, langverwachte optreden in België! J.D. Wilkes & The Shack Shakers (US) J.D. Wilkes is het best bekend als de leider van The Legendary Shack Shakers, een adembenemende live band die het publiek verblijdde in 2013 en recentelijk nog een geweldige show gaven op Sjock in 2017. Hij komt hier voor het eerst in België met zijn nieuw project, met veel meer roots, akoestiek en vintage. Eén van de hoogtepunten van de Roots-scene van 2018. Fifty Foot Combo (B) Fifty Foot Combo is al meer dan twintig jaar aanwezig op de Belgische surf rockscene. Met hun gevitamineerde zestigerjaren muziek straalt de band een unieke sfeer uit. We verwachten hen op Roots & Roses al jaren en eindelijk zijn ze er op 1 mei 2018. Eén van de toonaangevende groepen van de Europese surfscene! Yak (UK) Yak maakt deel uit van de heropleving van alternatieve rockscene en Engelse garage. Deze jonge formatie die in 2016 hun eerste album uitbracht, zal op het festival 2018 een frisse, gespierde en ritmische show brengen, als perfecte introductie voor de Black Lips! Crystal & Runnin Wild (B) Crystal & Runnin'Wild is een rockabilly-band uit Brussel. De band wordt geleid door een atypisch duo ... vader en dochter: de gitarist Patrick Ouchène en de zangeres Crystal. Wat muziek betreft, die is gewoon van internationale klasse. Uitstekende Rockabilly! Cocaine Piss & Mette Rasmussen (B/DK) Het is Cocaine Piss die deze fantastische 9e editie van Roots & Roses gaat openen. Opmerkelijke eer, gezien de namen die volgen. Cocaine Piss, is een band uit Luik die flirt met de grenzen van de programmeerlijn van Roots & Roses. De ongelooflijke rock 'n roll-energie die ze vrijgeven, rechtvaardigt hun aanwezigheid. Het is al weer veel te lang (van in 2009) geleden dat onze favoriete 'Prodigal Son’ de lage landen met een bezoek vereerde. Ry had het immers te druk met het inblikken van zijn nieuwe plaat ('The Prodigal Son’, die in mei verschijnt) en het schrijven van twee muzikale pamfletten ('Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down’ en 'Election Special’). In 2013 bracht hij zijn tweede reguliere live-lp uit ('Live in San Francisco’), en die werd, net als 'Show Time’ uit 1977, opgenomen in The Great American Music Hall. In 2015 en 2016 ging Ry samen met Ricky Skaggs en Sharon White op tournee. Op de 'Music for the Good People Show’ speelden ze een selectie uit 'The Great Americana Songbook’. De decennia voordien vulde hij met talrijke soundtracks ("Paris, Texas” had zonder die slide-gitaar nooit zo’n impact gehad), zijn productiewerk (Buena Vista Social Club, Mavis Staples), zijn geniale trilogie: "Chavez Ravine” (2005), "My name is Buddy” (2007) en "I, Flathead” (2008) en een rits klassieke meesterwerken (alles van 'Ry Cooder’ tot en met 'Bop Till You Drop’ is onontbeerlijk in iedere collectie). Voor nieuwkomers verscheen in 2008 de verzamelaar "The UFO has landed” die zowel zijn filmmuziek als regulier solo-werk bundelt. Op 11 en 12 oktober 2018 zal Ry Cooder samen met zijn band - Joachim Cooder (drum), Robert Francis (bass), Sam Gendel (saxofoon) en The Hamiltones (zang) - een bloemlezing brengen uit zijn omvangrijke oeuvre. New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said the ambulance arrived around 8:50 PM EST, and she was taken to a hospital in Harlem. The 81-year-old had enormous hits in the 70s and 80s such as "Killing Me Softly," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Set the Night to Music." It is believed the singer was able to leave the stage on her own. Musician James Mtume had shared a photo of himself with Ms. Flack on Instagram shortly before the incident took place. He wrote: “Back together again! With the best!” Despite one of her most famous songs being "Killing Me Softly”, the 81-year-old was not the first artist to sing the track. Lori Lieberman first recorded the song back in 1971. Ms. Flack’s version of the song released two years later. The artist is currently the only singer to have won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year two years in a row. In 1999 the sensation was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. De man achter onder meer “Country Boy” is al jaren een graag geziene gast bij andere artiesten. Commuters passing through the Broadway-Lafayette station Wednesday were greeted by David Bowie art and quotes. Spotify brought the glam-rock musician display back to Bowie’s old neighborhood in conjunction with a Starman exhibit at Brooklyn Museum. Visitors can enjoy images of Bowie through May 13. Some commuters will even be able to take a piece home; Bowie-themed MetroCards displaying his personas are on sale. Bowie, 69, lost a battle with cancer in January 2016. Before that, he lived in Manhattan. The tributes to Bowie are paired with quotes he’d said about the city. Commuters rushed up and down a stairway featuring a Bowie quote describing a “sense of urgency” in the city. “I have a great time here: we can go where we want, eat where we want, walk out with our child, go to the park, ride the subway, do the things that any family does,” another poster says, quoting Bowie. Album Quiet and Peace is a compelling 11-song set that finds the trio—singer-guitarist Bill Janovitz, bassist-vocalist Chris Colbourn and drummer Tom Maginnis—simultaneously mining their best-known sonic elements while breaking new ground on emotionally resonant new tunes such as "All Be Gone," "Overtime," "Freckles" and "CatVMouse." As the lead track of Both Ways , “Good Lover” unfolds with acoustic instruments and Woods’ quietly compelling delivery -- not what a listener might expect from the title alone. That masterful perspective has led to nominations for the Polaris Prize and the Juno Awards. In addition, his single “What Kind of Love Is That?” climbed to No. 1 on the CBC Top 20 Chart, while his catalog has accrued over 45 million streams. Woods is also a notable Nashville writer with credits by Billy Currington, Charles Kelley, Tim McGraw and Charlie Worsham. The song captures that moment of bringing someone home to meet the family, using it as a backdrop to the anxieties of falling in love. True to the album title, a listener could either imagine a happily-ever-after ending or hear it as an ode to the one that got away. In most cases, Woods prefers to leave lyrics open to interpretation. “The writing I always liked is about things that are indicative of a world but not the entire world. They lead you into the room and then let you fill in the details. One detail that makes you go, ‘OK, I feel like I understand.’ As long as you find that one detail, that's the key. That's the one you stick with and the rest is up to people's imagination,” he says. As Both Ways progresses, radio-friendly songs like “I Live a Little Lie” and “Easy Street” employ a full-band sound to flesh out the sonic landscape. A number of the songs are guitar-driven, yet they stop short of full-blown rock ‘n’ roll. With his typically droll sense of humor, Woods notes, “I know that nobody likes rock music anymore. I don't even really like it anymore.” But he says the more aggressive moments on Both Ways are inspired by camaraderie in the studio and on tour, as well as the pop and R&B music he heard growing up in Sarnia, Ontario, where he could pick up the radio stations out of Detroit. Both Ways concludes with “Next Year,” one of five songs on the album he co-wrote in Nashville, where he has a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music. The poignant narrative follows a boy through adolescence and adulthood, where hopes and dreams are in a race against time.
