Release nieuwe Kayak single: titeltrack van album ‘Out Of This World’. Releasedatum album 7 Mei.30/4/2021 De legendarische Nederlandse progressieve rockband Kayak kondigde eind februari hun inmiddels 18e studioalbum 'Out Of This World' aan, waarvan 7 mei 2021 de release is. I was somewhat brain-dead, my soul was still very much there”. “Earth City 1: The Longing” is echter zijn tweede ‘echte’ studio-album en handelt over ‘Our alienation and inter-connectedness. It explores our fascination, isolation and loneliness amidst the connections and disconnections we all experience in the highly complex 21st century world’. Ethan Gold’s muziek bestrijkt een divers en levendig pallet met elementen van ‘alt-rock, Eno-like sonics, romantic ballads, gorgeous indie pop and catchy folk music’, waarbij je muzikale vergelijkingen kunt maken met artiesten als Eels, Wilco, Conor Oberst, Ben Folds, Rivers Cuomo, Badly Drawn Boy en Elliott Smith. It’s been over 50 years since Van Morrison first came to attention, and still no-one comes close to his free-wheeling blend of blues, R&B, jazz and soul. Now building towards the May 7th release of his 42nd studio album, the 28-track ‘Latest Record Project Volume 1’, Van Morrison today releases the new track ‘Love Should Come With A Warning’. Rich with warm exemplary musicianship, ‘Love Should Come With A Warning’ features lyrics written by the great Don Black, the celebrated lyricist who is best known for his James Bond themes, ‘Thunderball’, ’Diamonds Are Forever’ and ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’. Morrison approached Don Black after hearing something in his 1969 pop ballad On Days Like These, as sung by Matt Monro for the soundtrack to The Italian Job, which reminded him of his own style. “It sounds like I wrote it, doesn’t it?” says Van Morrison. “That’s the mythology, that everything you do is about you, which is totally impossible. Especially when you’ve written hundreds of songs. I’m not that interesting to me.” ‘Love Should Come WIth A Warning’ is the latest track to be released ahead of ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’. Its lead single ‘Only A Song’ was playlisted and named Record of the Week at Radio 2, and gained further radio support at Jazz FM. The album has been further previewed with the release of its title track. The track is one of two songs that Black co-wrote for the album, the other being ‘Mistaken Identity’. The albumElsewhere, it spans everything from the saxophone-led R&B gem ‘Jealousy’ to the joyful, country-tinged ‘A Few Bars Early’ via the spirited Them-style garage rock of the self-explanatory ‘Stop Bitching, Do Something’. While it touches upon the romantic sentiment and late-night warmth that people love Van Morrison for, the overriding theme is a straight-talking commentary on contemporary life. ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ will be released on double-CD, deluxe-CD, triple-vinyl and digital formats. Van Morrison will mark the album’s release by playing his first-ever virtual performance on May 8th. He will perform a livestream event from the renowned Real World Studios in Wiltshire that will see him debut some brand new songs alongside a selection of classic tracks. The event is a partnership with nugs.net, the leading music platform for live concert streams and recordings. The platform hosts live streams and professionally recorded archive concerts from iconic artists. Fans can tune in to the performance live at 8pm BST / 3pm EST. Tickets are available to pre-order here. We are sad to report the death of long time Bar-Kays keyboardist Mark Bubba Bynum on April, 27, 2021.
As the Bar-Kays posted on their Twitter account: “We are sad to announce the passing of our keyboard player and beloved brother Mark Bubba Bynum of The Barkays. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Rest in Power Brother. We Love you Bubba. Mr. Unforgettable Dream.” The Bar-Kays have a past filled with both triumph and tragedy, first achieving fame as a stalwart Memphis band that served as Otis Redding’s backing band and scored a huge 1967 hit with “Soul Finger.” But months after that hit, four members of the band died in the same tragic plane crash that killed Redding. The band re-formed with new members and continued to serve an essential role at Stax, working on dozens of albums, including Isaac Hayes’ classic Hot Buttered Soul. After the Stax years, the Bar-Kays had a second run at fame as a funk band that topped the charts in the late 70s and early 80s with such hits as “Hit and Run” and “Freak Show On The Dance Floor.” The group has continued to perform in various incarnations ever since, and was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2015. Bynum was an essential part of the stage show for the Bar-Kays, and also served for a period working the rap star MC Hammer. He will be missed. “On an evening in November, 2020 Belgian artist Nicolas Rombouts and American- Brussels based artist Matt Watts met together at Studio Caporal in Antwerp behind Central Station. Just a week after the suicide of friend and artist Loloman (aka Ward Zwart), and also in the wake of an end to a marriage marred with much pain, addiction, and depression. The two had spoken by phone and agreed to a recording session. That evening they shared such loss in conversation, and on muted piano, contrabass, and electronics. Compositions were shared and improvised and by the next day their album Muted Songs For Piano was complete. Meant to be listened to in one full trip from beginning to end. You've traveled across the galaxy and are looking back through a telescope at this world and its lonesome mausoleum of memory. Sounds you can almost hear and movement you can almost feel, though you know that it has passed in the time its light has taken to reach you. As is the profound personal nature of this album, the artists have proposed to deliver the album themselves to those interested in the recorded performance.” KILLING JOKE Drummer BIG PAUL FERGUSON Releases First Single & Video From His Debut Solo Album!29/4/2021 As a founding member and co-creative mind behind proto-industrial post-punk icons Killing Joke, Big Paul Ferguson has already earned his place among the most influential and highly regarded musicians of his era. Ferguson’s signature tribal drum style not only set Killing Joke apart from the scores of British bands coming up in the ‘80s, adding both depth and weight to the band’s piercing, discordant sound, but it also became a reference point for rock percussionists that followed in the band’s wake. Now, this rock music veteran steps into the spotlight for his first ever solo album, Virtual Control. Featuring 10 original tracks written with guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite and highlighted with special guest appearances from former Marilyn Manson member Tim Skold as well as Die Krupps mastermind Jürgen Engler, Virtual Control conjures a dense and foreboding aural atmosphere, layering guitars, synths and Ferguson’s own distinctive vocals, that underscores the thoughtfulness of Ferguson’s introspective and observant lyrics. In anticipation of the album’s full release on June 25, we are excited to share Virtual Control’s first single “Extrapolate,” one of the album’s most propulsive tracks that rides an unrelenting guitar/bass hook supported by taut percussion and a hypnotic lead vocal, expertly mixed by award-winning producer Tom Dalgety (Pixies, Rammstein). Ferguson shares these thoughts on what inspired the song, “My reflections on the dichotomies, social and personal, of these times. How our lives are being affected by isolation coupled with the bombardment of conflicting information. Our trust in what is real and true being challenged on a daily basis.”
In celebration of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald’s 104th birthday, one of her most enduring and beloved duets with Louis Armstrong, “Cheek To Cheek,” has received a whimsical new animated video. Directed by Brooklyn-based artist Wendy Cong Zhao, the video, inspired by vintage pencil-line drawings, portrays two lovers who meet, separate, and come together again through a series of imaginative, animated dance scenes. “I captured the dancers on video in a traditional studio shoot, then rotoscoped their movements frame by frame to create the animated line art,” said Cong Zhao of her process. “Many drawings were added in that process to complement and transform the dance moves, such as objects and figures freely transitioning and morphing to the flow of the music. The black and white lines, with a few pops of color, reflect a certain sophistication and passion. The music video is a celebration of the romance depicted in this iconic love song. Paul Humphrey died April 4, 2021. Paul came from a musical family, and had three brothers who are also professional musicians; actor Mark Humphrey is a drummer, John Humphrey plays bass, and Andy Humphrey is a singer-songwriter/guitarist. His sister Lesley has modeled extensively. Paul died at the age of 61 after a long battle with multiple system atrophy, a rare degenerative disorder.
Paul was a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician who played keyboards and guitar and was best known as the lead singer for the 1980s Canadian new wave band Blue Peter. Early in his career Paul also made acting appearances in a few television series, including Friday the 13th: The Series and Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. Paul had also been the leader of The Paul Humphrey Band, The Monkey Tree, and Broken Arrow. Blue Peter was founded by Paul and Chris Wardman in the late 1970s when they were high school students. After attending York University, Paul dropped out of the theatre program to pursue music full time. Paul sang lead and was known for his low-timbered singing, compared at times to that of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry, as well as his "suave" looks and dancing style. His bandmate Geoff McOuat credited the singer as being influenced by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and elements of film noir. While a member of Blue Peter, Paul earned the Male Vocalist of the Year award at 1984's CASBY Awards (then known as The U-Knows), held by CFNY radio in Toronto. Paul and Blue Peter performed shows occasionally, often as part of "retro" events, such as the Juno Awards 40th Anniversary Concert Series held at the Horseshoe Tavern in January 2011. After stints with The Paul Humphrey Band and Monkey Tree, Humphrey formed Broken Arrow with Blue Peter bass player Ric Joudrey in 1997. Broken Arrow recorded and released two CDs, Bend (1997), and Four Ways to Centre (2000). In 2007 Paul released a solo album, A Rumour of Angels, which he recorded with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. John Sakamoto selected People Let You Down from this album for mention in his Anti-Hit List in 2007, noting that the album's style was a significant departure from Paul's musical past. In 2008, Paul contributed vocals to Your Flight Tonight on ProCon's album Kingmaker. Al Schmitt, a 23-time Grammy-winning producer and recording engineer, has died at age 91. Messages of condolence from numerous studios and other organizations have appeared on social media honoring Schmitt's lifetime of work. (Variety notes that "multiple friends and associates have confirmed, [though] no official statement or cause of death has been given.")
Over his seven-decade career, Schmitt worked alongside nearly every name in popular music over the decades, covering a wide range of styles, sounds and generations. Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Toto, Quincy Jones, Hot Tuna, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Jefferson Airplane and dozens more are included in his long resume. For Schmitt, the world of recorded music was a part of his childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930, he would frequently take the subway into Manhattan to spend time at his uncle's recording studio, Harry Smith Recording, where legends like Bing Crosby, the Andrew Sisters, Orson Welles and Les Paul would appear from time to time to cut sessions. After serving in the Navy, the 19-year-old Schmitt started working as an apprentice at Apex Recording Studios, where he began to learn the trade. One afternoon, he found himself the only one in the studio with Duke Ellington. "I kept saying to him, 'Mr. Ellington, I’m not qualified to do this,'" Schmitt later recalled in an interview. "He patted me on the leg, and he looked me in the eye and said, “It’s okay, sonny, we are going to get through this.” They ended up recording songs together. Schmitt eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where got a job with RCA in 1963, but he left in 1966 to work as an independent producer (becoming one of the first engineers to go fully freelance) and spent the next six decades working alongside some of the best rock, jazz and R&B artists. More recently, in 2014, Schmitt worked with Bob Dylan on the singer-songwriter's series of Sinatra covers, an opportunity Schmitt had been hoping for but did not expect the notoriously selective artist to change his schedule for him. “Unfortunately, I was busy at the time they had planned,” Schmitt remembered in 2015. “I was really disappointed, because Dylan was still on the bucket list of artists I’d love to work with but never had. The very next day I got a call back, saying that they were prepared to move their schedule to a time when I was available, because Bob really wanted to work with me. Evidently, he’d heard my work, including the Duets album I had recorded with Sinatra, and he must have figured that I was the right guy to record it.” Schmitt was the right guy for innumerable artists. He won more Grammy Awards than any other engineer or mixer - including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 - and recorded and mixed more than 150 gold and platinum albums.
Vaak alleen, zelden eenzaam.

We need its values, based on human dignity and the fight against racism and all forms of oppression. It is so much more than music, jazz is the kind of bridge builder we need in the world today.” Established by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2011 at the initiative of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, and recognized by the United Nations General Assembly, International Jazz Day brings together countries and communities worldwide every April 30th to celebrate jazz and highlight the music’s important role in encouraging dialogue, combating discrimination and promoting human dignity. International Jazz Day has become a global movement reaching more than two billion people annually on all seven continents, including Antarctica, through education and community outreach, performances, radio, television and streaming, along with electronic, print and social media. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz is UNESCO’s official partner in the organization and promotion of International Jazz Day. Air transportation and support for artists and educators is provided by United Airlines, the airline partner of International Jazz Day. www.jazzday.com Het Tiense stadsfestival Suikerrock zal deze zomer niet doorgaan.
Resurrection will be available for pre-order on May 21st at mikezito.com. Producing the new disc is the celebrated Grammy-winner David Z, best known for his long-standing work with Prince, and who has contributed to albums by Etta James, Billy Idol, BoDeans, Buddy Guy and John Mayall, among many others. “I have songs in me and musical ideas all of the time,” volunteers Mike Zito about the new album’s genesis. “I write what I can, when I can and try to save it all for posterity. Some of the songs are just songs and they don’t always have meaning for me, and some of them become very personal. For me to sing songs and feel them with real emotion, they need to be somewhat personal. Even songs I did not write, I need to feel they explain a part of my thinking or how I am feeling about love, sex, life, death, the world…. Resurrection is an album of feelings, emotions, and is very personal. The title track is how I once almost lost my love, but it came back stronger than ever. I have had this song in me for years, but it only makes sense now to share it with the world. After the year we have had on planet Earth, I believe we all need a rebirth. This rebirth has given me an opportunity to be who I want to be musically and artistically.” Joining Zito (vocals, guitar) on his new musical journey are many musicians who’ve played with him for the last several years, including: Matthew Johnson – drums; Doug Byrkit - bass guitar; Lewis Stephens – piano, organ; Zach Zito - acoustic guitar; and Lisa Andersen - backing vocals. The 11 tracks on Resurrection not only showcase Zito’s strengths as a composer, with eight original songs that sparkle, but also as an interpreter of other compositions, with scintillating and powerful takes on tunes from JJ Cale (“I’ll Make Love To You”), Eric Clapton (“Presence of the Lord”) and Willie Dixon (“Evil”). “I wrote and recorded the music I felt strongest about and I wanted to share it with the world,” Zito says.” I played my guitar the way I want to play my guitar, not the way anyone says I am supposed to play my guitar. I sang the way I wanted to sing - in my voice with my emotions. I had David Z produce for me again after a few years apart. We have now worked on seven albums together and I believe he understands my music and helped me to shape this album to be strong in the year 2021. This is an album that requires deep listening from beginning to end. The album cover art is an original painting by an amazing South Korean Artist, Yool Kim. She has captured the feeling of soul and light at the end of struggle. I am excited for people to hear this music. I believe it is a wonderful album of songs, stories, and sonic waves of electric guitar that convey darkness before the dawn. I am once again excited about love and life and music.” Mike Zito’s last CD, Quarantine Blues, was recorded during the heart of the coronavirus pandemic and served as a healing love letter to his fans around the world that heralded better days ahead if we’d all just stick together. His album prior to that was a tribute to fellow St. Louis native and rock ‘n’ roll legend, Chuck Berry, and featured an array of guest guitarists ranging from Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout and Eric Gales, to Robben Ford, Luther Dickinson and Sonny Landreth, as well as Berry’s own grandson. Jazz vocalist REBECCA KILGORE is one the most prolific recording and performing artists on the scene today. With 50 or so recording projects as a leader or co-leader, she is one of the most respected interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Based in Portland, OR, Kilgore has worked with many of the top jazz musicians in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Her newest recording, THE REBECCA KILGORE TRIO – VOL. 1 features pianist RANDY PORTER and bassist TOM WAKELING. Kilgore’s husband, DICK TITTERINGTON, also plays cornet on a couple of tunes. Kilgore has a smooth, flexible voice that is a perfect fit for her repertoire. Her approach is lighthearted. She is never histrionic and eschews melisma and vocal pyrotechnics for a swinging, bluesy, conversational style that puts the lyrics and melody front and center. Her singing has won her many accolades. An honoree of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame, Kilgore was awarded the Portland Jazz Master Award in 2020 by PDX Jazz, the largest organization presenting jazz performances in the Pacific Northwest. She has also been a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and appeared on A Prairie Home Companion. She has performed with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall and has been invited to perform at New York’s Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention for three years at Town Hall and Lincoln Center. She was the guest of honor at the 2013 Roswell Jazz Festival, and she was honored as a Jazz Legend at the San Diego Jazz Party in 2016. THE REBECCA KILGORE TRIO – VOL. 1 is an album by artists at the top of their game. The eclectic mix of songs is compelling and unexpected, but all beautifully held together by Kilgore’s expressive vocals and the superb musicianship of Porter, Wakeling, and Titterington.

It was quickly scooped up by Searchlight Pictures, which will release the film in theaters and simultaneously on Hulu on July 2. As Questlove served as the music producer for the 93rd Academy Awards this year, it was fitting the studio dropped the first trailer during the ceremony. Check it out below. The debut from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who has been the drummer of hip-hop band The Roots for over three decades, serves up a different slice of music history in the pivotal year of 1969. During the same summer as Woodstock, a different music festival took place 100 miles away. More than 300,000 people attended the summer concert series known as the Harlem Cultural Festival. It was filmed, but after that summer, the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. It has never been seen — until now. The film features performances by B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples, Hugh Masekela, Mongo Santamaria, Nina Simone, and Sly & the Family Stone, among many others. “Summer of Soul” has glowing reviews, including from IndieWire’s Tambay Obenson, who applauded the film in his grade A-review. “Seething through the entire documentary, against the backdrop of a racially turbulent 1960s, is an insistence on a new kind of racial pride and unity across the diaspora, which infuses ‘Summer’ with an honesty and realism,” he wrote. “It’s explained that attendees distrusted the NYPD to the point of hiring the Black Panthers to safeguard the festival, anticipating Black Lives Matter events decades down the line. Questlove and editor Joshua L. Pearson lace together footage of stage performances with history lessons (Motown, gospel music, the evolution of Black style, the concept of a common struggle among Black people worldwide), tying it all together with endearing recollections of the single day in 1969 by those who were there. The result fans the flames of Black consciousness.” line-up voor 45e editie in juli 2022, o.a.: Madness, Social Distortion, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, New Bomb Turks, Equal Idiots, Vandoliers, Pat Todd and the Rankoutsiders, The Jason Ringenberg Band Sjock: your rock & roll highlight of the year -8, 9 en 10 en juli 2022 Poeyelhei Gierle (BE)- Start ticket sales op zaterdag 10 juli 2021 In juli 2020 zou in het Belgische Gierle de speciale 45e editie van Sjock plaatsvinden, maar vanwege het coronavirus werd het festival geannuleerd.
The inevitable has been decided. We will move the 45th edition of Sjock festival back to 2022. There's no way we can get things organised like we want and to get Sjock going as it should be like. We will start to refund all tickets that were sold for the 2020 and 2021 edition as of April 15th. There’s no action needed from your side, refunds will be done automatically. Go spend that refunded money in your local bar, rock’n’roll club or buy some goodies from your favourite band. They can all use the support!” “It’s been only 2 weeks since our last update on the 45th edition of Sjock fest, but your reactions on our refund policy made us reconsider our decision”, laat de organisatie geëmotioneerd weten. “We were truly overwhelmed by so many people who want to hold on to their ticket until 2022. Some people even won’t accept a refund and buy new tickets for next year! So we decided to give you the possibility again to make your own choice: either you keep your ticket or you request a refund. To request your refund, please visit www.sjock.com. Tickets for Sjock in 2022 will go back on sale that same weekend. This way we’ll have a good idea of how many tickets have become available again.” You might not know a huge amount about Belgian cosmic rockers Go March, but hopefully that’s set to change when you get your hands on their new single, a real motherchugger of a space-rock monster.’ BEZETTING: gitaren - Philipp Weies (Intergalactic Lovers, Manngold, Motek, General Mindy, Statue, Dez Mona, Arno etc) synths - Hans De Prins ( Broken Glass Heroes, Creature with the Atom Brain, Millionaire etc) drums - Antoni Foscez ( Arno, Meuris, Statue, DVKES, Crayon Sun etc) New Jersey (April 22, 2021)—Bob Porter, who made his mark on jazz as a reissue producer and syndicated blues, soul, jazz and R&B radio DJ on NPR, died April 10 of esophageal cancer. Over the years, Porter was nominated for five Grammy Awards and won two, recognizing just some of his efforts across a career that saw him involved in the creation of hundreds of jazz and blues albums.
Born June 20, 1940 in Wellesley, MA, Porter made his mark across jazz and blues with his archival work for a number of labels, overseeing compilations and reissues, first for the Prestige label in the Sixties, then later for Savoy Records (1975-1980) and Atlantic Records (1986-1991). Curating and re-contextualizing the work of then-underappreciated artists who would come to be acclaimed by ensuing generations, Porter often chose which artists’ work to reintroduce to new audiences, arguably creating a blueprint as to how history now regards the mid-20th Century oeuvre of both genres. As part of his reissue work, Porter wrote liner notes for hundreds of albums for numerous labels—an effort that was rewarded when he won his first Grammy in 1980 for his commentary that accompanied The Complete Charlie Parker on Savoy. Six years later, he took home his second trophy, for best historical album, as the reissue producer of the mammoth box set, Atlantic Rhythm and Blues 1947-1974, Vols. 1-7. An archivist at heart, Porter discovered while compiling the set that numerous masters had been lost in a fire, so he tracked down pristine original pressings to preserve the music and expose it to a wider audience through the project. Porter’s career as a producer was not solely defined by reissues, however. Over the decades, he produced more than 170 jazz and blues albums, working with artists like Illinois Jacquet and Big Joe Turner. Porter also served nine times as the governor of the New York chapter of NARAS (today known as the Recording Academy), and additionally a member of the nominating committee of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Despite these industry efforts, Porter likely was best-known for proselytizing on behalf of jazz and the blues in mass media. Beyond writing liner notes, he wrote for Jazz Times, Down Beat, Cash Box and others; blogged at his own site, Jazzetc.net, authored the book Soul Jazz: A History of jazz in the Black Community-1945-1975, and most prominently spent 40 years in radio, hosting syndicated radio shows such as Keeping The Blues Alive (for which he won a WC Handy Award in 1986), Saturday Morning Function, Portraits in Blue, Beale Street Caravan and more. Mike Mitchell, a founding member of the band that recorded 'Louie Louie,' has died at 77 on April 16, 2021. Mitchell was the last founding member still playing with the Portland, Oregon, band best known for its confounding rock cover of the R&B song "Louie Louie." Mitchell performed the famous jangly guitar solo in the middle of the song and continued to perform with different lineups of the band for more than 60 years.
