Wishbone Ash achieved considerable success in the 1970s, during which they were among England's most popular hard rock acts, achieving an incredible eight top 40 albums. Often regarded as one of the premiere UK live acts of the ’70s, they toured considerably throughout this period and into the following decades.

Madfish are now proud to present a new 10-LP box set containing five live concerts recorded between 1976 - 1980 from across the globe. Initially appearing on “The Vintage Years” CD box set in 2018, four of the concerts enclosed will be issued on vinyl for the first time, with a newly sourced and previously unreleased recording from the band’s October 1976 run of shows in Nakano Sunplaza, Tokyo on the New England tour, exclusively available within.

Featuring the second classic Wishbone Ash line up of Andy Powell, Martin Turner, Laurie Wisefield and Steve Upton, these recordings showcase a band at their live best and firing on all cylinders across four different tours.

In-depth album notes and track-by-track ‘making of’ interviews by author and Wishbone expert Campbell Devine are on display within a lavish booklet which features a sleek design as well as rare live photographs, a replica ‘Wishbone News’ newspaper from the Front Page News tour and individually numbered certificate.

In 'Eenzaat' beschrijft Kaai Man een Steppenwolfachtig personage dat zichzelf heel bewust in de rand van de maatschappij heeft geplaatst en een nachtelijke wandeling maakt.
"Hij hoeft geen geld, hij heeft de tijd. De sleur van de dag is niet aan hem besteed, in 't holst van de nacht zomaar nergens heen."

'Eenzaat' is na 'Samen' en 'Op Zoek' de derde single van het debuutalbum van Kaai Man. 'Overkant' verschijnt op 13 mei 2022. 

‘Overkant’  (release: 13 mei) is het debuutalbum van Kaai Man. Ooit was Fred Verhaegen het boegbeeld van de veelbelovende band Mambo Chillum (Kinky Star Records 1998), daarna succesvol met Blues- en rootsband Durango. Onder de naam Kaai Man schrijft hij tegenwoordig Vlaamstalige liedjes die hij zelf omschrijft als “Nederswamp, recht uit het hart, doorspekt met hoop en geloof... en een vleugje medeleven”. Fred Verhaegen is een songwriter met een zoekende ziel in een wereld die al lang gevonden is. Uit zijn teksten klinkt een rust als een thuisgevoel van iemand die altijd onderweg is. Want, waar staat een man als hij reeds op het kruispunt heeft gestaan, en hij zijn pact met de duivel heeft overleefd om erover te kunnen vertellen? Zo’n man kent de toekomst zonder ze als een slang te bezweren. Met de songs die Kaai Man brengt, schenkt hij ons een ongewisse weg die het verleden verbindt met wat nog moet komen. Het is geen uitweg, geen afrit of pitstop, gewoon de weg verder. Fred Verhaegen is met Kaai Man de kwellende loutering voorbij en kiest resoluut voor een ‘nieuwe’ taal, zijn moedertaal, het Nederlands aan de Wase oever van de Antwerpse haven. De helderheid waarmee hij zingt, uit zich in een articulatie van hoe hij de wereld observeert. Blues, gospel en kleinkunst weet hij op authentieke wijze te verenigen. Hij arrangeert zijn nummers volgens oude recepten maar mengt even goed met gif van hier en nu. Zijn swamp gitaarstijl kraakt als een gammele stoel in een houten kippen hok, waar ooit John Lee Hooker wat nog restte van zijn ziel heeft uitgebraakt. De mondharmonica waait doorheen zijn repertoire. Nu eens als een zachte zuiderwind, dan weer snijdend als een gure noorderwind doorheen de nacht van het blauwe uur. Kaai Man geeft ons het gevoel dat woeste zeeën ook al eens gaan vervelen. Zijn muziek verbeeldt wat er omgaat in een man die slentert langs de kaaien van ons simpele, eeuwenoude bestaan. Nu eens flanerend, dan weer aangemonsterd op een boot die door de binnenvaart meandert, voortgetrokken door het zoeken naar de kaai in de man. Eindelijk staat er weer iets moois en positiefs te gebeuren... en dat heet Kaai Man! Release debuutalbum 'Overkant' op 13 mei.

Omwille van gezondheidsredenen moet Céline Dion noodgedwongen haar Europese 'Courage World Tour' verplaatsen van 2022 naar 2023, waaronder ook de concerten gepland in het Sportpaleis in Antwerpen en de Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Céline had de eerste 52 shows van de tournee voltooid voordat de pandemie in maart 2020 uitbrak, maar werd onlangs behandeld voor ernstige en aanhoudende spierkrampen die haar verhinderen op te treden en haar herstel duurt langer dan ze had gehoopt.

"I'm so sorry we have to change our tour plans for Europe one more time; first we had to move the shows because of the pandemic, now it’s my health issues causing us to postpone the shows,” Celine said. "I am doing a little bit better…but I'm still experiencing some spasms. I need to be in top shape when I'm on stage. I honestly can't wait, but I’m just not there yet… I'm doing my very best to get back to the level that I need to be so that I can give 100% at my shows because that's what you deserve.”

​Antwerpen, 29 april 2022 - Sportpaleis Group start vandaag een nieuw hoofdstuk met een volledige rebranding en naamsverandering. De nieuwe naam be•at dekt veel beter de lading waarvoor de grootste live-entertainmentgroep van België op het vlak van zaaluitbating of venue management van België vandaag staat. Sportpaleis, Lotto Arena, Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen, Capitole Gent, Vorst Nationaal, Trixxo Arena, Trixxo Theater en Proximus Pop-up Arena krijgen een meer uitgesproken identiteit en worden met elkaar verbonden door het moedermerk be•at. De rebranding gaat gepaard met een forse ambitie om te groeien, de klantenservice te verbeteren en een absolute prioriteit voor duurzaam ondernemen. Zo zal de groep verder inzetten op de  pop-uplocatie(s) en engageert zij zich tot het drastisch verkleinen van de ecologische voetafdruk.

“De nieuwe naam is een directe oproep om erbij te zijn en samen momenten te beleven die een leven lang bijblijven. De inspiratie voor de nieuwe visuele identiteit is de energieke beweging van de massa, de aantrekkingskracht van de artiest, de muziek en de collectieve hartslag van het publiek. Het is die beweging en emotie die aan de basis liggen van de nieuwe naam en visuele identiteit van onze organisatie”, vertelt Jan Van Esbroeck, CEO van be•at.

“Ons uitgangspunt was de collectieve magie van een live ervaring vertalen naar een energetisch visueel systeem, dat zowel werkte voor de groep als de iconische zalen", vertelt Sebastien Greffe, Creative Director van WeWantMore, de Antwerpse designstudio die de rebranding uitwerkte.

De groep krijgt dan wel een nieuwe naam, de venues krijgen meer dan ooit hun eigen identiteit en zullen prominenter op de voorgrond treden. Met nog meer aandacht voor de bezoeker, die op een meer persoonlijke manier benaderd zal worden. Zo zal er voor een optreden of een theatervoorstelling vanuit de venue zelf gecommuniceerd worden en niet langer vanuit de groep. Ook het customer experience center wordt verder uitgebouwd. Voor inspiratie en ontspanning heeft de groep een eigen theatermagazine gecreëerd. Een podcastreeks is in de maak.

De trouwe fans zullen binnenkort dan weer kunnen genieten van een loyaliteitsprogramma, dat be•at later dit jaar lanceert. Er komt een fast lane (snelle toegang tot de zaal), ze krijgen toegang tot een lounge of bar, tot presales, gratis tickets en kortingen op VIP ervaringen.


Bruto Nationaal Geluk verhogen

“Het doel van onze organisatie is en zal altijd blijven om het Bruto Nationaal Geluk te verhogen door mensen van alle leeftijden en welke afkomst dan ook samen te brengen in collectieve, magische ervaringen”, vertelt Jan Van Esbroeck. “De timing voor de rebranding is niet toevallig gekozen en zorgt voor een extra dynamiek na twee bijzondere jaren. Alleen al in de volgende acht maanden staan er binnen de groep bijna 600 evenementen op de kalender. We hebben ons de afgelopen jaren enorm geprofessionaliseerd, wat ons toelaat om grootschalige evenementen te organiseren die bijdragen aan het algemene welzijn van de maatschappij”.

Daarnaast zal be•at zijn team van enthousiaste medewerkers verder uitbreiden en nieuwe ‘out-of-the-box’ locaties creëren. De Proximus Pop-up Arena in Middelkerke vorige zomer was een groot succes, en loopt nog minstens twee jaar. De groep wil nu verdergaan op dat elan.

Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen

Be•at spreekt met zijn nieuwe naam ook een versterkt engagement tegen de klimaatopwarming uit. De organisatie wil zijn CO2-uitstoot verminderen door nog meer in te zetten op het duurzaam vervoer en de ‘last mile to the arena’, wat betekent dat je met andere mobiliteitsoplossingen dan de wagen tot aan de venues geraakt.

Er zijn al heel wat resultaten geboekt de laatste jaren. Vooral het combiticket – het concertticket dat gratis toegang geeft tot het openbaar vervoer – heeft gezorgd voor een stijging tot meer dan 50% van de bezoekers die zich op een duurzame manier verplaatsen naar de venues. De ambitie is om dit cijfer op te krikken tot 60% tegen 2025.

Be•at wil haar ecologische voetafdruk gedetailleerd in kaart brengen en is daarvoor gestart met nulmetingen. Energieverbruik is een belangrijk aandachtspunt en de ommeslag naar hernieuwbare energie is ingezet. Zo liggen er nu al 1600 zonnepanelen op de daken van Trixxo en Lotto Arena. In Lotto Arena is dat goed voor 50% van het volledige dagverbruik, in Trixxo Arena goed voor de volle 100%.

Ook wordt er gewerkt aan een strikt afvalbeleid met een focus op circulaire economie. Be•at zit aan tafel met de Belgische festivals om dit vanuit de sector uit te tekenen. Veel aandacht gaat ook naar efficiënt waterverbruik en waterrecuperatie.

Vanaf vandaag zullen de nieuwe naam en het nieuwe logo uitgerold worden op en in de venues.

Tamino is terug. Na bijna drie jaar stilte kondigt de Belgisch-Egyptische artiest zijn terugkeer aan met de nieuwe track The First Disciple en ook een fantastische clip, waarin het verleden, het heden en de toekomst samenvloeien. Het ene moment bespeelt Tamino de Arabische oed, omringd door een leger ravers en muren bedekt in graffiti. Het andere moment wordt hij opgeslokt door de glitchy lichten van de club. 
   
Bassist Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) vergezelde Tamino de laatste jaren al op het podium en nam de baspartij van The First Disciple voor zijn rekening. Drummer Ruben Vanhoutte (DIRK., Faces On TV) speelde de drums in. De Belgische producers PJ Maertens en Jo Francken werkten samen met Tamino aan het nummer. De video voor The First Disciple werd geregisseerd door Bastiaan Lochs & Jonathan Van Hemelrijck.

​Tamino's debuut Amir luidde de komst in van een artiest die ondanks zijn jonge leeftijd volledig gevormd leek. In de media werden onmiddellijk gelijkenissen getrokken met een jonge Jeff Buckley. 
 
Tamino combineert de intensiteit en breekbaarheid in zijn krachtige stem met een orkestratie die een sterke hommage brengt aan zijn Egyptische roots. Het is geen verrassing dat de klanken van het Midden-Oosten als een rode draad door Tamino's muziek lopen. Zijn grootvader, Muharram Fouad, was één van de meest gevierde zangers en acteurs van Egypte. Toen Tamino zijn grootvaders oude gitaar cadeau kreeg, startte zijn muzikale reis.
 
In Europa speelt Tamino voor uitverkochte zalen met duizenden toeschouwers, waaronder in 2019 een opmerkelijke show in de Lotto Arena (capaciteit 8000) in zijn thuisstad Antwerpen. The First Disciple is de fascinerende terugkeer van deze meeslepende artiest. Ondanks alle lofbetuigingen aan de start, voel je dat zijn reis nog maar net begonnen is.

Nearly sixty years after they first played together, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, longtime friends and collaborators, reunite with an album of music from two Piedmont blues masters who have inspired them all their lives: Get On Board: The Songs of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.

​With Taj Mahal on vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano and Cooder on vocals, guitar, mandolin, and banjo—joined by Joachim Cooder on drums and bass—the duo recorded eleven songs drawn from recordings and live performances by Terry and McGhee, who they both first heard as teenagers in California.
Explaining where Terry and McGhee took him musically, Cooder says, “Down the road, away from Santa Monica. Where everything was good. ‘I have got to get out of here,’ was all I could think. What do you do, fourteen, eighteen years old? I was trapped. But that first record, Get on Board, the 10” on Folkways, was so wonderful, I could understand the guitar playing.”
Mahal adds, “I started hearing them when I was about nineteen, and I wanted to go to these coffee houses, ‘cause I heard that these old guys were playing. I knew that there was a river out there somewhere that I could get into, and once I got in it, I’d be all right. They brought the whole package for me.”

Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder originally joined forces in 1965, forming The Rising Sons when Cooder was just seventeen. The band was signed to Columbia Records but an album was not released and the group disbanded a year later. The 1960s recording sessions, widely bootlegged, were finally issued officially in 1992. Cooder then played on Taj Mahal’s 1968 self-titled solo debut album. Get On Board is their first recording together since then.
Harmonica player Sonny Terry and guitarist Brownie McGhee, both originally from the southeastern United States, had active solo careers as well as collaborating with some of the most celebrated musicians of their time. But they were best known for their forty-five-year partnership, which began in 1939 and included mesmerizing live performances around the world and numerous acclaimed recordings.
Their Piedmont blues style became popular during the folk music revival of the 1940s and ’50s, centered in New York City’s flourishing club scene for jazz, boogie-woogie, blues and folk music. Terry and McGhee traveled in the same circles as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, and Josh White, among others in a rich mix of writers, actors and musicians. As a new generation emerging in the 1960’s drew inspiration from folk and blues, Terry and McGhee toured the world as the foremost exponents of the acoustic music of the Piedmont. They were named National Heritage Fellows in 1982 in recognition of their distinctive musical contributions and accomplishments.
“You got the south on steroids, when you got the music of the south, the culture of the south, the beauty of the south, through Brownie and Sonny,” Taj Mahal says. He describes McGhee as a “solid rhythm player. To really play behind the harp like that. He would set stuff up. He wasn’t making many notes. Sonny had all the notes, running around. But Brownie, he laid it down.” Cooder adds: “This thing of squeezing the thumb and first finger and a little bit of the second finger, which I still do. I’d forgotten where it came from. That’s what Brownie did. I saw him do that and said, ‘I think I can do that.’”

​Mahal calls Terry “a wizard harmonica player.” Cooder says, “Sonny had incredible rhythm for one thing. Making sounds with his voice and the harmonica so you couldn’t tell quite which was which. He was good at that.”

“We’ve been doing this a while,” Cooder says. “Perhaps we’ve earned the right to bring it back.” Mahal concludes. “We’re now the guys that we aspired toward when we were starting out. Here we are now … old timers. What a great opportunity, to really come full circle.”

Readying itself as an antidote for the weariness worn on the sleeves of blues music lovers everywhere, a new collective project makes its way to the scene with the Strongman Blues Remedy, Volume 1 —available June 17 via Stony Plain Records.
 
Conceived by producer, songwriter and artist Steve Strongman, the “collective”  features a veritable who’s who of the blues, including Dawn Tyler Watson, Crystal Shawanda, Steve Marriner, Jesse O’Brien, Alec Fraser, and Harrison Kennedy — who can be heard on the album’s newly released single, “I Like To Ride.”
 
With seven albums as a solo artist — plus Canada’s JUNO Award, the Mel Brown Blues Award, International Blues Challenge’s Best Guitarist winner, four Maple Blues Awards, and more — deep into his career Strongman is an acclaimed bluesman  known for liberally applying swampy swagger and sweetness to shuffles, blues ballads, and four-on-the-floor chuggers alike.  The Strongman Blues Remedy, Volume 1 is the Hamilton, Ontario-based musician’s first time producing, a process he calls “a huge learning curve, but incredibly rewarding.” 
 
By doing songwriting sessions with a stellar cast of multi-award-winning and -nominated
Canadian blues artists, he developed an album that touches on a wide cross-section of experiences and viewpoints. The result is an expansive 10-track album with one overarching message within: the best remedy for the world we’re living in right now is to fill it with music that celebrates life and focuses on the joys of being on the other side.

Musiceren in de breedte; dat is wat er op Jazz Middelheim deze zomer zal gebeuren. Het oudste jazzfestival van het land pakt van 12 tot 15 augustus uit met internationale klasbakken als Iggy Pop, Thurston Moore Group, Fred Hersch Trio en Alabaster dePlume, maar ook Belgische jazzgrootheden als Jef Neve, Aka Moon en Bert Joris. Vaste waarden als Karen Willems, Bert Joris, TaxiWars en blackwave. tekenen eveneens op het appel. Het al aangekondigde verjaardagsconcert ter ere van de 100ste verjaardag van Toots Thielemans wordt begeleid door het Metropole Orchestra en Brussels Jazz Orchestra. 



Vrijdag 12 augustus wordt de perfecte openingsdag, gewijd aan de muziek van de toekomst. Nabou Claerhout– vorig jaar ook één van de beloftevolle Twintigers van Klara – kon als winnaar van Jong Jazztalent haar Trombone Ensemble Nabou Trombone Ensemble realiseren, een band met maar liefst zes trombonisten. Ze wordt gevolgd door de Belgisch-Ghanese multi-instrumentaliste Esinam die muziekstijlen uit verschillende culturen en fascinerende ritmes verweeft tot een uniek en eigentijds geluid. Er volgen nog enkele namen voor die dag maar afsluiten zal alvast in stijl gebeuren, want Middelheimhabitués Lander Gyselinck en Adriaan 'Pomrad' Van de Velde brengen als Lander & Adriaan hun '360° Ground Floor Aftershow' vol zomerse clubvibes.

Daags nadien, op 13 augustus, ligt de focus op avant garde en rockmuziek met Iggy Pop, Thurston Moore Group, Taxi Wars, Alabaster dePlume en Karen Willems. Met veel goesting en een open geest de muzikale bruggen tussen jazz, punk-rock en noise verkennen. 
 


Maar wacht eens. Iggy Pop op een jazzfestival?!

'Toch wel', klinkt het bij de organisatie  . 'Toen we hem twee jaar geleden aankondigden, gonsde het al van ongeloof en onbegrip, maar de legendarische rocker hoort hier wel degelijk thuis.'
Dat zit zo:
Toen men Iggy Pop ooit vroeg wie hij graag in het voorprogramma van The Stooges wilde, klink het vastberaden: 'Sun Ra'. En dat gebeurde ook. Twee jaar geleden nog verleende de zanger zijn stem dan weer aan het erg knappe jazzalbum ‘Loneliness Road' van pianist Jamie Saft, bassist Steve Swallow en drummer Bobby Previte. Ook op zijn eigen 'Free' uit 2019 zette hij al een forse stap richting jazz . Past helemaal op een dag vol nostalgie, avontuur en muzikaal spelplezier, dus waarop Sonic Youthgitarist Thurston Moore met zijn Thurston Moore Group de brug legt tussen experimentele muziek, noise en jazz. Het TaxiWars van Tom Barman en Robin Verheyen zorgt dan weer zoals gewoonlijk voor gierende tripjes tussen jazz en rock, terwijl Alabaster dePlume en Karen Willems Terre Sol Four vakkundig balanceren op de lijn tussen sfeervolle jazz en experimentele muziek. 

Zondag jazzdag, want op 14 augustus eert Jazz Middelheim de grootste jazzmuzikant uit de Belgische geschiedenis met het Toots 100 Official Anniversary Closing Concert. De peter van het festival zou dit jaar honderd jaar geworden zijn, reden genoeg voor een eerbetoon met een set die zowel op zijn fimmuziek als op zijn jazzrepertoire inzoomt. Als opwarming passeert die dag het beste uit de Belgische jazzscene. Publiekslieveling Jef Neve komt er zijn ‘Mysterium’-project voorstellen, trompettist Bert Joris bundelt voor zijn 65ste verjaardag de krachten met zoon Sam, Anneleen Boehme en haar Grand Picture Palace gaan de concurrentie aan met de grandeur van kasteel den Brandt. 
 


Op de slotdag maandag 15 augustus staat een bijzonder project van Aka Moon op de affiche om het dertigjarig bestaan van de band in de verf te zetten. Ze worden aangevuld door het Fred Hersch Trio & Desguin String Quartet en het Trio Kurt Rosenwinkel. Zo blijft ook de meer traditionele jazzliefhebber niet op zijn honger zitten. En omdat Jazz Middelheim ook een kweekvijver wil zijn voor muzikanten en daarvoor samen werkt met de jazzafdeling van het Antwerps Conservatorium opent het festival die dag met het bijzonder project Flight of the Black Zebra ft. Jakob Bro. 

Jazz Middelheim vindt plaats van 12-15 augustus 2022 in Park Den Brandt, Antwerpen. Tickets zijn exclusief verkrijgbaar via jazzmiddelheim.be. Kindertickets (3 tot 12 jaar) kosten 8 euro en zijn inclusief toegang tot de kinderanimatie op het festival.

Verjaardagsconcert Toots 100, Bozar 
Radio 1 en Klara maken een gezamenlijke uitzending van het verjaardagsconcert op 29 april in Bozar. Het Metropole Orkest, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Philip Catherine en Kenny Werner brengen er hulde aan Toots Thielemans. Uitzending van 18-22.30u. Vanaf 18 uur, met Lies Steppe en Annelies Moons, Bent Van Looy.

​Op vrijdag 6 mei 2022 brengt BLP Records 'Ruimtevaarder' van Kommil Foo na twintig jaar voor het eerst uit op 7” vinyl single. Het nummer stond op het album ‘Lof Der Waanzin’  uit 2002 en werd door de jaren heen één van de favoriete en meest bekende songs van de broers Mich en Raf Walschaerts. Drie keer behaalde het liedje de hoogste plaats in De Lage Landenlijst van Radio 1. Op de B-kant van de single staat 'De Tijd Dringt', een nummer dat Kommil Foo begin vorig jaar schreef als eerbetoon aan hun muzikale held Kris De Bruyne.

'Ruimtevaarder' past in een serie van klassieke nummers uit het belpop repertoire die nooit eerder een single release kenden. De single 'Ruimtevaarder' is, sinds de start van de reeks in 2019, het achtste Nederlandstalige nummer dat BLP Records voor het eerst op vinyl single uitbrengt. 'Ruimtevaarder' verschijnt in een gelimiteerde oplage van 1000 exemplaren op zwart vinyl en is vanaf 6 mei te koop via www.blprecords.be en in de betere platenwinkel.

A​lain Allaeys uit Ieper, de zanger van de Belgische indierockband Mad Dog Loose is overleden. Dat heeft de platenmaatschappij 62TV Records dinsdag meegedeeld. Allaeys was 59 jaar oud.

Mad Dog Loose maakt halfweg de jaren negentig naam. In 1995 wordt een eerste EP uitgebracht, met daarop het nummer ‘Shiny Side’, dat vaak gedraaid werd op Studio Brussel. In 1996 wordt het album Material Sunset uitgebracht, met daarop onder meer de singles ‘Versa’ en ‘Take Me Down’. Een jaar later beslist Allaeys evenwel om de groep te ontbinden. Na een reünie in 2015 worden nog twee nieuwe albums uitgebracht.

​Allaeys stierf tijdens het weekend, vermoedelijk zaterdag, in zijn flat in Ieper aan een hartaanval, zo meldt zijn platenmaatschappij.

The Hog

De single ‘Friendly Is Better’, ook terug te vinden op de EP 'Songs Of Light And Shade' uit november 2021, is een dromerige popsong met een “happy sad vibe”. Het nummer zweert bij de glimlach als het ultieme communicatie-middel. Wolf: “Ik was in de tuin met mijn dochtertje aan het spelen en schreef het liedje al zingend. Eenmaal binnen in mijn studio heb ik de tekst in één ruk geschreven.” ‘The Hog’ is een idyllische terugblik op de jeugd van Wolf met fictieve karakters. Het nummer geeft het gevoel weer van hoe de tijd eindeloos lijkt als je een kind bent. ‘On a Sunday Afternoon’ is een reflectie over een zondagnamiddag en een minder idyllische versie van Wolf’s 'thuis'.
 
Vanwymeersch heeft ‘The Early Years’ afgerond een maand na het overlijden van zijn vader en dat heeft de plaat gekleurd. Hij vertelt: “Vooral ‘I’m Wide Awake’ is een soort afscheid voor mijn vader geworden, je hoort meeuwen omdat mijn vader aan de zee woonde en kraaien als symbool des doods. Daarbij zit er ook een stukje in van het liedje ‘Besser’ van mijn eerste band Waldorf, wat ook een nummer was over mijn vader.”
 
Hoewel zijn roots in de (elektrische) gitaarmuziek (Waldorf, The Van Jets, Raketkanon en Ian Clement) liggen, deelt Wolf Vanwymeersch op ‘The Early Years’ muziek/nummers met eerder een singer-songwriter insteek. Tijdens de opnames van het album liet hij de elektrische gitaar zoveel mogelijk links liggen, leerde gitaar te spelen zonder plectrum, om zo voor een combinatie van akoestische gitaren en elektronische sounds te kunnen gaan.
 
Wolf, opgegroeid met The Beatles, metal en Cohen, denkt liever niet in hokjes, maar in sferen. Zijn melodieën zijn pakkend en de songstructuren verraden een ongebruikelijk muzikaal brein. Hij is een muzikant die ervan houdt om verschillende geluiden te laten botsen, zoals singer-songwritermuziek en elektronische muziek.

De minidocu van de hand van Anton Coene, al jaren een goede vriend van Vanwymeersch, was al een fantastisch voorproefje. De film is een mooi en innemend portret geworden van een muzikant die geen masker wil opzetten. Het laat Vanwymeersch in al zijn eerlijkheid zien. 


Live wordt Vanwymeersch vergezeld door twee ervaren muzikanten: Stijn Vanmarsenille (Future Old People Are Wizards, Elefant) en Roeland Vandemoortele (Too Tangled, Rick de Leeuw).

American saxophonist, Andrew Woolfolk, passed away on April 24, 2022, from natural causes. He was aged 71.
Woolfolk, was better known as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire. He was a popular figure in jazz, R&B, soul, funk, disco, pop, EDM, Latin, and Afro-pop genres.
Woolfolk has composed popular songs like September, Let’s Groove, Boogie Wonderland, After The Love Has Gone, Fantasy, Reasons, Shining Star, and many more.

Many music fans have conveyed their heartfelt condolences after learning of his demise. The Earth, Wind & Fire band wrote:
The band wrote “We turned buddies and bandmates after assembly in high school. His identity was Andrew Paul Woolfolk. We misplaced him tonight after he had been sick for greater than six years. From this Land of the Dying to the Land of the Dwelling, he has Transitioned on to the Without end.”
“Wonderful memories. Exceptional ability. Funny, but also competitive. With a quick wit. And there’s always the styling. Boroski… My friend, I’ll see you on the other side”

​Born on October 11, 1950, in Texas, United States, Woolfolk played in the United States School in Orleans, France school band during his father’s military deployment.

Woolfolk also collaborated with artists such as Deniece Williams, Stanley Turrentine, Phil Collins, Twentynine, Philip Bailey, and Level 42.
Woolfolk attended East High School in Denver, Colorado. In 1972 he joined the band Earth, Wind & Fire as a saxophonist and became a longstanding member.
​
Woolfolk was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire in 1999. In 2017, Woolfolk was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

De Nederlandse zanger en componist Henny Vrienten is op 73-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft de familie via concertorganisator MOJO laten weten. Hij werd vooral bekend met zijn groep Doe Maar. Een doodsoorzaak is niet gemeld, maar de zanger en componist was al langer ziek.

“Hij was een geweldige, liefhebbende vader en echtgenoot; een wijze, erudiete man met vlijmscherp gevoel voor humor en taal”, laat zijn familie weten. De uitvaart vindt in besloten kring plaats. De familie vraagt om rust en privacy en doet verder geen mededelingen.

Vrienten was sinds 1980 de frontman van Doe Maar. De band had hits met nummers als ‘Sinds 1 Dag Of 2 (32 jaar)’, ‘Is Dit Alles’ en ‘Smoorverliefd’. De groep ging oorspronkelijk in 1984 uit elkaar, maar kwam sinds een reünie in 2000 toch weer geregeld bij elkaar. Doe Maar zou afgelopen najaar beginnen aan een afscheidstournee, maar die werd afgezegd vanwege de ziekte van Vrienten.

Vrienten maakte samen met George Kooijmans en Boudewijn de Groot ook deel uit van het trio Vreemde Kostgangers.

De zanger werkte daarnaast als componist en maakte soundtracks voor tientallen films en documentaires. Recent werkte hij aan de musical ‘De Koning van Amsterdam’, die later dit jaar in première zal gaan.

Gent Jazz kondigt  een nieuwe festivaldag aan, vrijdag 8 juli wordt een ontdekkingstocht in een paradijs voor muziekliefhebbers. Met GoGo Penguin, Lady Blackbird, Oscar Jerome, Theon Cross, Bex Burch & Leafcutter John: Boing! en Dishwasher_ brengt het festival het kruim van de nieuwste muzikale lichting naar de Bijlokesite in Gent. Een dag met stuk voor stuk jonge, vernieuwende groepen, scherp en gretig, waarvan de komende jaren heel veel verwacht wordt. “Met een dagprijs van 29 euro wil Gent Jazz zo veel mogelijk mensen de kans geven om deze groepen te ontdekken” aldus de festivalorganisatie. “Dit programma past helemaal in onze missie om jonge artiesten voor te stellen en een duwtje in de rug te geven. We mikken met deze dag op muziekliefhebbers die graag ‘mee’ zijn en op iedereen die uitkijkt naar een heerlijke festivaldag vol muzikale ontdekking. We streven altijd naar correcte ticketprijzen, rekening houdend met de kost. Wanneer we dan een programma van dit muzikaal niveau kunnen voorstellen aan een lagere ticketprijs, doen we dat graag, en met trots.”  
 


Op de al aangekondigde dagen werden Daniel Lanois, Stikstof, Black Flower, De Beren Gieren, Steven De Bruyn & Jasper Hautekiet, Emmy d’Arc, Camille Camille, Smerz, Nabou Trombone Ensemble en Bram Delooze toegevoegd. "Dankzij de bijzonder sterke en creatieve Belgische muziekscene, kunnen we veel artiesten van eigen bodem presenteren." stelt de festivalorganisatie. "Om de volgende generatie jazzmuzikanten te prikkelen en uit te dagen, plaatsten we ook twee studentenprojecten van het Gents conservatorium op het programma. Daarmee is het programma volledig.” 
 


Enkele dagen in de kijker

Stikstof en Smerz vervolledigen het programma op 15 juli. Deze dag waar ook Kae Tempest en Sylvie Kreusch, twee van de meest markante en bejubelde hedendaagse performers staan, trekt zo volledig de kaart van de hedendaagse urban scene, met voldoende vette beats voor een stomend feestje. 

Daniel Lanois zal op 10 juli, de dag met onder meer Van Morrison en Judi Jackson met een kleine bezetting aantreden. Naar goede gewoonte brengt hij een onvoorspelbare set vol muzikaal avontuur met een blueskantje. Dat kantje zal bij Steven De Bruyn & Jasper Hautekiet wellicht nog wat guller worden ingekleurd.   

Het programma van donderdag 14 juli lijkt wel een ode aan unieke vrouwelijke stemmen nu Agnes Obel, Meskerem Mees en Sohnarr het gezelschap krijgen van Camille Camille. Vier fantastische stemmen maar ook vier straffe muzikanten.

De ticketverkoop verloopt via www.gentjazz.com – het enige officiële verkoopkanaal. De prijzen variëren per dag (29-46 euro). Kindertickets (-12 jaar) kosten 8 Euro. Gent Jazz 2022 vindt plaats op de Bijlokesite van 7 tot 16 juli. 

Tickets van de door corona uitgestelde festivaledities werden omgezet in vouchers en per mail bezorgd aan de tickethouders. Deze vouchers zijn geldig tot de zomer van 2023. De organisatie roept wie een voucher heeft op om deze tijdig in te wisselen. Gent Jazz raadt tickethouders die hun ticket willen omwisselen aan om gebruikt te maken van het Ticketswap platform.

Peter Bence, wereldberoemde pianosensatie, componist, muziekproducer en Guinness wereldrecordhouder ("Snelste Pianospeler”), komt voor de allereerste keer naar België! Peter Bence oogstte sensationeel succes met zijn edgy, percussieve en expressieve manier van spelen, waarmee hij de grenzen tussen klassieke en populaire muziek resoluut opheft. Hij tilt het pianospel naar een volledig nieuw niveau, maakt van het instrument een compleet orkest en inspireert jonge en oudere generaties van muzikanten en muziekliefhebbers overal ter wereld. Met zijn pianoarrangementen maakte hij de voorbije jaren furore op het internet. Hij verzamelde meer dan 950 miljoen videohits en een enorm volgerspubliek op YouTube en Facebook.
 
Toen hij amper twee jaar was, speelde Bence op het gehoor al melodietjes na van zijn favoriete tekenfilms op de buffetpiano van zijn grootouders. Zijn passie en opmerkelijk talent brachten hem op zijn vierde naar de lokale muziekschool in zijn geboorteplaats in Hongarije. Na zijn opleiding in klassieke piano en compositie in Hongarije, zette hij zijn studie filmmuziek en piano voort aan het Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Daar maakte hij kennis met een breed spectrum van muziekgenres, waarvan vele bijdroegen tot de stijl die hij vandaag heeft ontwikkeld. Als belangrijkste muzikale invloeden verwijst hij zelf naar John Williams, Michael Jackson, Queen, J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart en vele anderen.
 
In januari 2012 vestigde hij een Guiness Wereldrecord voor de "meeste pianoaanslagen in een minuut”, namelijk 765. Peter begon met het uploaden van video’s op YouTube toen hij studeerde aan Berklee, maar het was pas in 2015 dat het plots hard ging, namelijk met zijn arrangement van 'Bad’ van Michael Jackson. In enkele dagen tijd werd die video maar liefst 10 miljoen keer bekeken en groeide hij uit tot een virale sensatie. Ondertussen staat de teller op meer dan 950 miljoen views op YouTube en Facebook samen. De voorbije vier jaar gaf hij uitverkochte optredens in meer dan 40 landen, waaronder Sydney Opera House, Lotte Concert Hall in Seoel, Stadthalle in Wenen, Victoria Hall in Genève en Crocus City Hall in Moskou. Hij opende de BBC Proms In The Park 2017, in het Londense Hyde Park voor 50.000 toeschouwers. Arno Hintjens is zaterdag 23 april overleden op 72-jarige leeftijd. De rockzanger leed sinds 2019 aan pancreaskanker. Na operaties en chemo zette hij begin dit jaar de behandeling stop. Er volgden nog optredens in ‘zijn’ steden, Brussel en Oostende, als finaal saluut.


​Le plus beau is niet meer. Arno Hintjens overleed vandaag op 72-jarige leeftijd in zijn appartement in Brussel, omringd door zijn familie. Velen zullen hem missen. In de voorbije weken leefde Vlaanderen mee met zijn laatste strijd: hij kreeg een lintje van de koning, en een ferme schouderklop van de luisteraars van radio 1, die zijn song ‘Les yeux de ma mère’ naar de top van hun jaarlijkse Classics-referendum stemden.
​
Zijn ultieme concerten in Brussel en Oostende lieten een man zien die met pijn op het podium stond, en afscheid nam zoals we hem vijftig jaar lang meemaakten: als zanger met een volstrekt eigen stijl. Van de natuur kreeg hij geen perfecte zangstem mee, noten lezen kon hij niet en zijn instrumentale kennis bleef beperkt tot de mondharmonica. Maar het podium was waar hij zich het best voelde, en waar zijn publiek hem het best aanvoelde.

Niemand kon tot het einde met meer recht het leven bezingen als ‘oh la la la … c’est magnifique.’ Al gebeurde dat steeds moeizamer.

​De voorbije maanden wilden veel mensen dan ook absoluut zijn optredens bijwonen. Zo zong hij eind februari nog voor een tjokvol Kursaal in Oostende, zijn thuishaven. Eerder die maand verraste Arno het publiek in de AB: plots verscheen Stromae op het podium om samen met zijn idool “Putain”te zingen.
​
De rockzanger zat meer dan 50 jaar in het vak, maar de echte doorbraak kwam er in 1980 met de groep T.C. Matic. Hits als “Oh La La La” en “Putain” groeiden al snel uit tot klassiekers. In 1986 waagde Arno zijn kans als soloartiest en bracht hij zijn eerste soloalbum uit. Zijn laatste album “Santéboutique” verscheen eind 2019.

Guitar Shorty, the blues guitarist born David William Kearney who was an influence to Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, has died at the age 87.
The musician’s passing was announced by his record label, Alligator, in a statement posted yesterday (21 April). According to the label, the artist – born David William Kearney – passed away from “natural causes” in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday (20 April)

Kearney was renowned for his unconventional guitar playing, husky singing voice and energetic performances, which even involved backflips and front rolls.

In his twenties, the sought-after musician opened for Ray Charles and Guitar Slim, and met Jimi Hendrix in Seattle while touring with influential soul artist Sam Cooke.

According to Alligator, Hendrix would often go AWOL from the US army to catch Kearney’s performances.
“Jimi told me the reason he started setting his guitar on fire was because he couldn’t do the back flips like I did,” Shorty told Alligator.

Born in Texas in 1943, Kearney took an interest in guitar at a young age, inspired by the likes of BB King, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker.
Kearney soon joined Walter Johnson’s 18-piece orchestra as featured guitarist and vocalist, and, supported by singer-songwriter Otis Rush in 1957, released his first single on independent label Cobra Records.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1971, Kearney also opened for his idols BB King and T-Bone Walker and he eventually settled there to play gigs locally.
Over his seven decade-long career, Guitar Shorty released 10 full-length solo recordings with his 2004 Alligator Records debut, Watch Your Back, being his best-selling record. His final album, Trying To Find My Way Back, came out in 2019.

Throughout her career, she’s earned three more nominations for Best Female Vocalist thanks to albums like Racine (1992), Rats (1994), Present (1997), Hot Gossip (2000), Get What You Give (2006), From Dusk Til Dawn (2009) and her side project S.U.N.’;s album, Something Unto Nothing (2011) — along with singles like “Make You A Believer,” “You Don’t Have to Remind Me,” “Sun’s Gonna Rise” and 1992’s “Trust in Me,” a duet with Joe Cocker from the record-selling Bodyguard soundtrack.
 
Jordan starred in the off-Broadway Janis Joplin show, “Love Janis,” performed “The Vagina
Monologues” in Winnipeg and Toronto, toured the world with “A Bowie Celebration,” guest-starred on NBC-TV’s “Sisters,” weighed in as the only female judge on “Canadian Idol” for all six seasons beginning in 2003, and branded her own line of wine, Kick Ass Sass Wine.
 
In 2017, she released Racine Revisited, recreating her sophomore album with an all-star cast
for its 25th anniversary, and celebrated the same milestone for Rats in 2020 with a colored-
vinyl reissue. With Bitches Blues, Sass returns to a genre that’s long been ingrained in her grasp since the start. “There’s been an undercurrent of blues throughout my whole career - the music that I have mostly been drawn to has always had that gritty, rootsy vein running through it, and that’s why I’m enjoying making these records so much.”

Sometimes it takes a potentially life altering event to make you stop and re-evaluate what is truly important to you. In March 2021, guitarist, composer, and arranger CHRIS STANDRING found himself in the emergency room after experiencing chest pains. Although there was some history of heart disease in his immediate family, he never dreamed that he was himself a candidate for a heart attack. He was just 60 years old, kept trim, ate well, exercised, and never smoked. But he was lucky. He come through it with flying colors and a new appreciation for the simple things that make life worth living.

On his newest release, SIMPLE THINGS, Standring reflects on his recent experience and his new and intimate awareness of the fragility of life. Standring relates, “We have all heard cliches like ‘who knows what tomorrow may bring’ and ‘don't forget to stop and smell the roses,’ but we usually don’t take those old aphorisms to heart. To suddenly come face to face with my own mortality made me think about what is really important to me and how I want to live out my third act. Ultimately the answer came down to a just few basic things - spending time with loved ones, being present in the moment, and doing things with joy. Indeed, the theme of this album is joy, positivity, hope, and, because I'm a sucker for a beautiful melody, a little sadness as well.”

Standring is one of the most prolific and successful artists on the contemporary urban jazz scene. SIMPLE THINGS is his 14th CD as a leader and follows his 2021 release Wonderful World, of which critic Travis Rogers said, “Wonderful World propels Chris Standring’s reputation—indeed, fame—as masterful guitar artist and savvy arranger. Standring’s ability to pare down standards and classics, while never losing the lush quality of the orchestra, is brilliant. Whether it is his composing, his arranging, or his performing, Chris Standring is deserving of careful attention.”

Standring, a native of England, has had 13 Billboard Top 10 singles and 6 singles that reached number one on the chart. Although he spent his childhood on a farm, driving tractors and feeding sheep, he began studying classical guitar when he was just six years old. He listened to a lot of West Coast American jazz growing up and became a serious jazz musician when he attended the London College of Music. Many of his fellow students were aspiring jazz musicians and hard-core, straight-ahead aficionados, and Standring soon found himself listening to the great bebop players and learning new approaches to harmony and rhythm.

Standring had visited the United States several times in the 1980s and loved the West Coast vibe. He moved to Los Angeles in 1991 and quickly became part of the local jazz scene, playing the top L.A. venues with A-list musicians. He soon caught the attention of many top music acts, and his contemporary guitar sound can be heard on recordings by Bebe and Cece Winans, Jody Watley and Rick Braun. He has also performed with Marc Antoine, Bob James, Richard Elliott, Peter White, Kirk Whalum, and Al Stewart.

Standring released his first album, Velvet, in 1998 on Instinct Records, a label out of New York City. A prolific composer, he has written or co-written over 100 compositions and produced a new album for a variety of labels every year or two. Standring is focused and intense about his work. He writes nearly every day and never married because he did not want any distractions. He says that “just 1% of my output is from inspiration and 99% is from dedication to my craft.”

Covid has not lightened Standring’s output or schedule. Besides working on SIMPLE THINGS, he has been producing music for other artists and will soon present additional artists on his label, Ultimate Vibe Recordings.
Besides playing guitar and composing all the tunes on SIMPLE THINGS, Standring also plays keyboards and programmed various synth sounds and drum loops. He is joined by some of the top names in jazz, smooth jazz, funk, and R&B who live in Southern California, including his regular bandmates ANDRE BERRY on bass and CHRIS COLEMAN on drums. Also performing on the album are RODNEY LEE on keyboards, GARY MEEK on sax, and KEVIN AXT on bass.

Standring is no stranger to funk, and several compositions on the album were heavily influenced by Prince and Bootsy Collins. Standring explains, “I’m a big fan of Prince, who learned about funk studying the music of people like Bootsy Collins. I wrote the opening track, “Shadow of Doubt,” after hearing a particular bass line by Prince that I really liked and wondered what I could do with something similar. I also saw a YouTube video of Bootsy explaining his basic funk formula. The bass line he demonstrated is so funky that it inspired me to write something of my own. Of course, I had to thank him, which I did on “Thank You Bootsy.” “Face to Face” is another song that was influenced by Prince and Bootsy.”

Standring originally wrote “Change the World” for another artist, but he decided to keep the song for himself because it fit his style so well. He released this tune as a single, which reached #1 on Billboard. “A Thousand Words” is a darker tune that Standring wrote for an old friend who suffered from mental illness and recently ended her own life. Standring composed “Ain't Nothin' But A Thing” specifically to play in live shows. It features Rodney Lee on organ.

“The Gist of You” has a romantic yet funky, half-time feel. Standring built “No Two Ways About It” on a two-chord groove that he imbues with an infectious, toe-tapping feel. “Too Close for Comfort” refers to his health scare last year. Standring often uses the phrase “Don't Get Me Started,” so he wrote a song with that title. The track features Gary Meek on tenor sax. Standring closes the album with “And the Show Goes On,” a mellow track with a lovely melody. As Standring says, “With all the world has been through the last couple of years – me included - the title says it all.”
Standring is a superb guitarist and composer with an innate feel for funky, bluesy jazz. For him, music should be emotionally authentic rather than an intellectual exercise or a demonstration of a musician’s proficiency. As Standring says, he is a sucker for a beautiful melody, which is quite apparent on SIMPLE THINGS, an album with a lot of heart.

Wie dacht dat Koen en Kris na meer dan 37 jaar Clouseau wat gas zouden terugnemen, komt bedrogen uit: met 'Jonge Wolven' - meteen goed voor goud! - levert Clouseau zijn veertiende (!) En de titel van het album geeft aan dat de mannen nog lang niet uitgezongen zijn. In de zomer en het najaar van 2022 stelt Clouseau 'Jonge Wolven’ live voor tijdens een nieuwe tournee doorheen Vlaanderen en Nederland. Na het ijzersterke en felgesmaakte album 'Tweesprong' (2019) trekken Koen en Kris de lijn door: ze doen hun eigen ding en zetten op 'Jonge Wolven' zo mogelijk nog meer in op kwaliteitsvolle songs - een leidraad doorheen de carrière van Clouseau. 'Jonge Wolven' is bovenal een eerlijk album: het drijft op enthousiasme en op waarachtigheid. 
 
Koen zingt beter, eerlijker en volwassener dan ooit en het album klinkt fantastisch. De productie van Kris is feilloos: sommige songs zijn adembenemend, andere zijn verrassend, zowel qua vorm als inhoud. Je voelt als luisteraar tegelijkertijd onvervalst jeugdig enthousiasme én een hoop métier. Je hoort échte instrumenten: drums, gitaren, violen - zaken die je de dag van vandaag nog maar weinig hoort in de hitparade. Zoek op "Jonge Wolven” vooral niet naar geprogrammeerde grooves of computergestuurde sounds, alles wat je hoort is écht gespeeld door echte muzikanten. Het is zo onhip dat het wel hip moet zijn.
 
Maar de échte troef van 'Jonge Wolven' is, zoals al gezegd, de ongelooflijke verzameling songs. Wàt een sterke plaat is dit. Het album is tevens een laatste getuigenis van het geweldige talent van de betreurde Stefaan Fernande, met wie Kris alle muziek schreef. Ook Koen zorgde bij meerdere songs voor briljante tekstuele inbreng. Ze legden zich geen enkele limiet op in eender welke richting en dat hòòr je. De ontelbare uren plezier tijdens de songwritingsessies zijn rechtstreeks terug te vinden op dit album. Al het harde werk ook, het resultaat staat als een huis.

During the ungoing pandemic, This Can Hurt started working on a 3rd full album which is nearly finished as we speak. Due to the uncertain times we live in, the band decided to put the release of the full album on hold and started working on a 5-track semi-acoustic EP which will be released Friday 22nd of april 2022.
 
8 weeks ago, the first single “If You Go (ft Marieke Bresseleers) was released on all digital platforms. Next Friday, the second single 'High Tide' will be dropped, together with the 5-track EP 'A Darker Shade of Blue', 

The 'A Darker Shade of Blue' EP features a few previously released songs in a somewhat stripped down version, collaborations with both Nel Mertens and Marieke Bresseleers, ...  

This Can Hurt was founded by the end of 2015 in Ghent (BE). The band started out as a 100% studio project with only one goal: “Create music without limitations”

After a year of intense songwriting the debut album “Nothing Matters” hit the shelves in March 2017. The album turned out to be a mixture of Rock, Metal, Wave, Industrial and even popmusic. Several reviewers praised the band for having an international standard, throwing in references to the likes of Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Type O Negative, Deftones, Massive Attack, Sisters Of Mercy...
By mid 2019 This Can Hurt started recording the songs for what would become the successor to 'Nothing Matters’. By the end of september 12 songs were selected, recorded, mixed and mastered.

‘Worlds Apart’ was set for release.

The band released a limited batch of 200 vinyls on their own ‘Lacienda’ label which was sold out in a mere 2 weeks, giving the band an opportunity to negotiate with several record labels. On the last day of 2019 This can Hurt signed a worldwide deal with UK-based Glasstone Records for the Worlds Apart

album.

The band decided not to renew the collaboration with Glasstone Records because of Brexit and is

Veteran Texas songwriter Wayne Willingham returns with his 5th album, Temptation Row. To truly appreciate the new record, one must first know a bit about Wayne’s journey to this point. For 26 years Willingham was a full time performer, earning his stripes in bars, honky tonks and such throughout Texas and then one day he walked away. He spent the next 19 years in the corporate world and not really even thinking of the music he left behind. Then one day someone handed him a guitar. 

This time around, Willingham was determined to take a different route. Instead of the dive bars and the cover bands that ruled his younger days, he would draw on his songwriting heroes like Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Paul Simon and Gordon Lightfoot and use his talents to tell stories that people could see and feel. Over the next four years Willingham released four albums of original material and began playing listening rooms and house concerts, connecting with the audience in a completely new and refreshing way. 

With no intentions of making another record a bout of writer’s block didn’t faze Willingham at the outset of the pandemic. He focused his energy on reorganizing his personal life and through that he found that songs began to flow out of him again. The resulting album, Temptation Row, contains 8 tracks that all tell a compelling story. Backed by a smooth studio band, Willingham’s sometimes haunting and always superb vocals force the lyrical content to the forefront. 

Covering a plethora of topics and emotions, Temptation Row’s songs fall somewhere in the folk/ Americana place in the musical landscape. Starting with the album’s opener, “Runnin’ Away” and continuing through tracks like “The Lady” and “Dancing With Him”, Willingham demonstrates a keen eye for the trials and tribulations of the relationships that all of us have experienced through our lives. “Hot Rod” finds Wayne paying tribute to his younger brother, whom he lost over the pandemic, a closure of sorts that anyone that has lost a loved one will be able to relate to. Later in the album, the first single and title track tell the tale of the seedier of side of every town in America. Closing out the album is a splendid cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1966 track, “Suzanne”. 

Temptation Row will serve as an introduction to Wayne Willingham to many people and a welcome door to the rest of his catalog. With its release, these newcomers will quickly learn what his fans already know, Wayne Willingham is much more than just another songwriter from Texas. 

​Pianist Rusty Tinder’s passion for country music took a bit of a winding road starting in Pullman, WA—piano at six, Choir at fourteen, a short stint with opera in college (music degree from Washington State), and several midwest-based jazz bands—before fate intervened

Moving back to the West Coast, circumstances took Tinder on tour with his friend Doug Cameron’s alt-country band, Stranger Neighbor for six months. He realized this sound’s melodic nature was perfect to play on the piano and also fit the way he was feeling. Once back in Los Angeles, Tinder played piano for the country rock outfit, Von Cotton for eight years, playing originals and covering the likes of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and George Straight, which officially hooked him on country music.

Tinder counts becoming a dad as one of the milestones in his life and also a motivation for making his own music. “I’ve thought, ‘What kind of legacy do I want to leave for me and my son? What do I want to put into this world, and what is it going to take?’” So in  2019 he stepped into the spotlight for the first time releasing, Dear To You, a deeply personal album inspired from true events of his life and what Elmore Magazine called “…good, honest medicine for the heart and soul.”

Now, in 2022, he’s co-producing with Mike Cionni and Blake English to release Alchemy Road, an 12-song Americana record with roots in folk, country and blues. “My last album was done in a rush.  While I’m proud of that album and what we accomplished, there is a noticeable difference between Dear To You and Alchemy Road because of the time we spent in pre-production figuring out how each song could be its best. Going into the recording process, we said we wouldn’t finish the record until each song found its best sound and vibe.  I think we accomplished that.”

“Infinite Grace” is a lead up instrumental piece to “Let Me Be Found” and is influenced by Tinder’s meditation and affinity for East Indian music. He learned to play harmonium for these songs. “It’s such an amazing instrument that has a bellow and can be a stream of sound,” he explained.  “It was fun learning this instrument and recording it.  It brought me back to a meditative state while tracking.”

Tinder is known for his voice, his approach to the keyboard, and his songwriting.  He writes from personal experience and is able to bring spiritual elements to his music without being preachy.  Prime examples are “Remember Why You’re Here”, a song questioning whether he is on track in life and remembering what he came on earth to do. The title track, “Alchemy Road” captures the nature of life’s twists and turns and looks for a better tomorrow.

“Copper Penny Sun” is social commentary on the political and sociological tension in America and a warning to learn from our past. It was influenced by the smoke from California wild fires blocking out the sun and resembling what he thought was a copper penny. The producers brought a lot of orchestral elements to the song creating a choir out of Tinder and Julie Pusch’s voices.  They also brought in several horns including tuba.  “We wanted to make it big,” said Tinder.  “Along with additional percussion, it gave a dramatic sound that we felt was needed to convey the importance of the message.”

The album was recorded in July of last year during quarantine.  Tinder had made demos of most of the songs which he was able to send to all of the musicians to learn at home before coming in to record.  “People at that time, pre-vaccine, were very wary to be in the same room with others that weren’t family or a very close friend in your ‘bubble’.  Being that I work in the film industry, I took the playbook from their Covid protocols and got everyone tested and we were all socially distanced while in the studio.  This required a lot of trust in me and each other.  Otherwise, this album wouldn’t have happened and frankly, it wouldn’t have been so special if it were under normal circumstances.”
Tinder’s co-produer Mike Cionni was also the demo engineer along with playing acoustic guitar and key background vocalist. The two took the time to dig into the arrangements and Tinder also focused on the quality of the lyrics. “We’ve been developing this relationship for the last 4 years and we went into recording Alchemy Road with an open mind, but also with a vision on the sound we wanted to create.  It has a modern folk-rock approach with a cohesive Americana eclecticism.”

“I spent so much time playing for others that I wasn’t nurturing my own songs and voice,” Tinder laments. “Once I decided to go for it, I was able to hone my sound. Alchemy Road is that album.  It’s the project where I really found my voice. I have been playing music for over 30 years and I finally discovered what I consider home in the music that I write, produce and perform.”
