​Tony Bennett, the beloved and durable interpreter of American standards whose chart-topping career spans seven decades, has been honored with this year's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
The Library of Congress announced the award Tuesday (June 20). The lifetime achievement award named for the duo of George and Ira Gershwin was created by Congress to honor singers and songwriters who entertain, inform and inspire. Past recipients include Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder.
Bennett, 90, gained his first pop success in the early 1950s with a string of singles for Columbia Records, including "Because of You" and "Rags to Riches." His 24 top 40 hits include his signature song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (1962), which won two Grammy Awards.
Bennett enjoyed a career revival in the 1990s and became popular with younger audiences in part because of an appearance on MTV Unplugged. He continued recording and touring constantly, and in 2014, his collaboration with Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
"His staying power is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Great American Songbook the Gershwins helped write, and his ability to collaborate with new generations of music icons has been a gift to music lovers of all ages," Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a statement.
Bennett recalled that one of his earliest recordings was "Fascinating Rhythm," a song by the Gershwins.
"To be receiving an award named in their honor is one of the greatest thrills of my career, and I am deeply appreciative to the Library of Congress to be named this year's recipient," Bennett said in a statement.
Born Anthony Thomas Benedetto in Queens, New York, in 1926, Bennett served in World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and participated in the liberation of a concentration camp. He marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to support civil rights and has performed for 11 U.S. presidents.
He is also an accomplished painter whose work has been exhibited at galleries around the world.
Bennett is scheduled to accept the award in Washington in November.

De Britse singersongwriter Nick Mulvey kondigt de komst van zijn tweede album aan:  Wake Up Now.  De plaat komt uit op 8 september. Groot nieuws voor de muzikale fijnproever! Bonobo komt niet op zijn eentje naar Vorst Nationaal; met Nick Hakim wist hij een jonge en buitengewoon getalenteerde artiest te strikken voor zijn voorprogramma.
 
De 27-jarige Amerikaan uit Washington is een geboren muziekliefhebber. Met zijn diploma van de prestigieuze Berklee School in Boston vers op zak, trekt hij naar Brooklyn. In 2014 brengt hij een tweedelige EP ‘Where Will We Go, pt. I & II’ uit, die kan rekenen op laaiende reacties van de critici, die in hem de nieuwste prins van de psych-soul zien. Drie jaar later levert hij zijn debuut ‘Green Twins’ af, geproducet in samenwerking met zijn onafscheidelijke kompaan Andrew Sarlo. De pers is opnieuw dolenthousiast. Na eerdere succesvolle passages in België komt de Amerikaanse pop-rockband R5 opnieuw naar ons land! Dit keer staan ze op 8 oktober in de Antwerpse TRIX.
Geleid door zanger/gitarist Ross Lynch en samen met broers Riker (bas/zang) en Rocky (gitaar/zang), zus Rydel (keyboards/zang) en beste vriend Ellington 'Ratliff’ (drums/zang) is R5 vanaf 2009 een feit. Sindsdien is de groep erin geslaagd om op korte tijd een nieuwe stem te worden in de pop-rockwereld. Hun debuutalbum 'Louder’ (2013) stond bovenaan de hitlijsten in tien verschillende landen en de nummers worden keer op keer luidkeels meegezongen tijdens hun concerten.

The War On Drugs kondigde eerder al aan dat de wereldtournee naar aanleiding van hun vierde studioalbum op 4 november halt houdt in Vorst Nationaal. The Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was held on Thursday, June 15 at New York’s Marriott Hotel. Musical titans Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Robert Lamm & James Pankow, Max Martin, Shawn “JAY Z” Carter and Motown Records’ founder, Berry Gordy, were all inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Rhonda Ross Kendrick surprised her father and performed a soulful rendition of “To Be Loved” before welcoming music titan Berry Gordy whom she called a “guiding force,” into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Gordy, who shared a special moment with his daughter on stage, told stories from throughout his career, adding “a song is not only a force that evokes emotion; it takes us to another time and place.”
It may seem odd that music legend Berry Gordy isn’t already in the Hall. In fact, he is, for his publishing acumen, a lifetime achievement award, and a pioneer award. But this year’s induction, for his songwriting prowess, was the one that meant the most to him. In a long and humorous speech, Gordy, whose short list of hits include Jackie Wilson’s “Reet Petite,” Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” and the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” detailed how every time he was told he was being honored in prior years he would say “it’s for my songwriting, right” only to be told it was for his other skills. “It’s about time!” he exclaimed. “Most people think I got this award many years ago but that’s not the case. Songwriting is my first love and protecting that love was the motivation for everything else I did.”

Pere Ubu's new album ’20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo’ opens the doors of the avant-garage to reveal the hardworking mechanics hammering away at the fundamentals of blue-collar rock. A three-guitar revision spans the state of the art for guitar-based rock in the year 2017. Keith Moliné is joined by Cleveland guitar legend Gary Siperko and Kristof Hahn in the now familiar orchestra of analog and digital synths, clarinet, drums and Thomas’ unquestionably unique vocals.
 
It follows on from their release in 2015 of 'Carnival of Souls,' which was widely praised by the media, confounding the usual clash of critics' sensibilities, and chosen by cult series 'American Horror Story' to provide two soundtracks for characters Mordrake and Twisty, in Season 4.
 
David Thomas says 'To my way of thinking, the new album is The James Gang teaming up with Tangerine Dream. Or something like that. The Chinese Whispers methodology we worked on the last two albums, now that everyone has gotten comfortable with it, has been replaced by the Dark Room. Put a bunch of musicians in a lightless room and by feeling one small section of an unknown object have them figure what it must be.’
 
It would be easy to suppose that the album is about being in a Missile Silo... in Montana... for 20 years or so, but this is Pere Ubu and they’re not about to make things easy. Thomas confirms, ‘I wanted to call it ‘Bruce Springsteen is an Asshole,’ then changed that to 'Robert DeNiro Is An Asshole,' then decided maybe that wasn't a good idea either. It’s not my job to explain.'
 
The album was recorded and mixed at Suma, Painesville Ohio. Engineer Paul Hamann, and his father before him, have been part of almost every Pere Ubu album since 1976. Thomas and Hamann have explored innumerable production methods over the years, establishing the unique Ubu sound that pre-dated punk and still stands proud of the forced genre defined clichés of the music world.
 
Over the years, Kristof Hahn had become a regular visitor to the Ubu dressing room during his time-off touring with The Swans. He was given access to the songs from the new album as works-in-progress. "I was just listening to 'The Healer' again today and it gave me goosebumps," he wrote to Thomas. "The whole album sounds amazing already, I would be really proud to be part of it, however small my part might be." He was brought on board immediately.
 
The touring arm of Pere Ubu will be heading out on tour with the new album later this year; first-off in the USA, with a full European tour and further USA dates in 2018.

Venom Inc. wed opgericht ter ere van een live set op het in 2015 gehouden Keep I True festival in Lauda-Königshofen – Duitsland. De podium reünie was een enorm succes bij de vele venom fans en de muziekindustrie. Bay Area thrash giganten Testament kondigen hun ‘Brotherhood Of The Snake’ headline show aan voor deze winter. De Metal goden Sabaton speelden op  het 15e Metal Hammer Golden God Awards in de O2 op . Dit event trekt velen uit de metal en rock industrie aan vanuit vele hoeken van de wereld. Het is dan ook niet verrassend dat wargames en World Of Tanks daarbij betrokken zijn en uitmondde in de start van een samenwerking tussen het spel en Sabaton.
 
Voor Wargaming en zijn miljoen spelers is de combinatie van het historische en epische muziek een onderdeel van hun game wereld. Niet enkel is Sabaton van grote invloed voor de gamers maar ook de band zelf speelt World Of Tanks graag als ze even tijd hebben tussen de shows. Het toont enkel maar aan dat deze gedeelde inspiratie een grote menigte samenbrengt om de passie te delen… en dingen op te blazen!
 
Dit was ook niet Sabaton’s eerste maal op de Metal Hammer Golden God Awards. In 2011 won Sabaton reeds de prijs ‘Breakthrough Band Award en werd ook genomineerd in 2012. Het leek dus maar enkel om ze op deze vijftiende editie weer te zien.

Extreme metal band Evil Invaders maakte onlangs de details voor het nieuwe album ‘Feed Me Violence’ bekend. Deze brutale aanval wordt wereldwijd uitgebracht op 29 september via Napalm Records en heeeft veel te bieden.

Hardcore/punk outfit Comeback Kid tekende een deal met Nuclear Blast (wereld) & NewDamage Records (Canada).
 
Zanger Andre Neufeld: “We zijn in extase dat we konden tekenen bij Nuclear Blast! Het is een label dat al dertig jaar meedraait en de thuis voor vele van de grote hardcore en matal acts in de wereld. Net zoals Comeback Kid is Nuclear Blast een label dat zich wereldwijd focust met kantoren overal ter wereld. Dat is ongelofelijk voor ons als band aangezien we in alle uithoeken van de wereld willen spelen.
 
Hier in Canada sloten we een deal met trouwe vrienden New Damage/Dine Alone. We hebben reeds nauw samengewerkt met hen voordien en weten daaruit dat ze passen in onze visie en thuisland.
 


​Het nieuwe album wordt het meest diverse en boeiendste album dat we tot op heden uitbrachten. Er zijn enkele samenwerkingen en we dachten ook buiten de box en stapten daarbij zelfs uit onze comfort zone. Ik werkte voordien met Devin Townsend aan een ander project om hem dan ‘Absolute’ te laten zingen was ongelofelijk voor ons. Ik hield al rekening met zijn zangstijl voor de demo vocalen nog voor we wisten dat hij zou meedoen. Toen we hem vroegen om deel uit te maken van het nummer stond hij er echt voor openen daar danken we hem ook voor. Hij heeft er zeker zijn eigen stempel aan gegeven ook. We kijken uit naar dit nieuwe avontuur en nieuw team dat ons hept om onze muziek in de wereld te verdelen. De nieuwe wereldtournee start ook deze zomer en we kunnen niet wachten om het nieuwe materiaal met de fans te delen.”
 
De voorbije maanden heeft Comeback Kid hard gewerkt aan de opvolger van de in 2014 verschenen ‘Die Knowing’ plaat. Het nieuwe album ‘Outsider’ zal uitkomen op 8 september via Nuclear Blast/New Damage Records.

Ray Charles’ Daughter Sheila Raye Charles Succumbs to Breast Cancer.
Sheila Raye Charles; the daughter of the music icon, the legendary Ray Charles and Sandra Jean Betts has passed away after a gallant battle with breast cancer. Sheila Raye was 53.
Sheila Raye has traveled across the United States and abroad spreading her message of love and redemption while also keeping her legendary father’s memory alive through song, worship, and praise.
Having spent much of her life watching her famous father, Sheila Raye embarked on her own music career as an adult. Her debut album, Introducing Sheila Raye Charles, was released in 2005. This R&B singles collection included traditional standards and a touching tribute to her late father, "My Daddy."
Sheila Raye rose above her own tragic life choices to spring back with a message of hope for the world’s children with a strong and compelling message based on her own experience of what faith and belief in 'God' can do.
Sheila Raye took her life’s story out to the people who needed to hear her own trials most, spreading a legacy of her own of LOVE, HOPE, and FORGIVENESS. In her testimonies, she revealed that her 20-year drug addiction resulted in three stints in federal prison on grand larceny charges. She also revealed she had five children but lost custody of all five of them because of her drug abuse and that her drug use caused her son to be born prematurely, weighing only 14 ounces at birth.
Sheila Raye didn't meet her father, Ray Charles until she was 14 and spoke of being sexually abused as a child. Two years later she was in a serious car accident that lodged her right eye into the back of her skull, taking her years to recover.
Years later, Sheila Raye began to follow in her father’s footsteps, with her his help. Although she managed to tour with bigger named artist’s, her career was unsuccessful. She struggled with daddy abandonment issues stemming from childhood and spent years trying to break free from his shadow. Eventually, she ended up on crack. Sheila’s lowest points came just before her third prison stint, her mother had died and her dad was no longer returning her calls.
Sheila had been drug-free for more than 10 years and began singing again. She reconnected with most of her children and spent every moment she could with her grandchildren.
Sheila Raye was recognized by the Georgia General Assembly’s House of Representatives for helping to keep her father’s legacy alive and well and, whereas Ray Charles’ compilation of “Georgia On My Mind” was designated as the official song of the state of Georgia.
Sheila married Michael "Tony" Steptoe in 2010 and has since become a devout Christian and, as a published author of her life story “Behind the Shades” she provided insight into her life and her path to God.
She and husband developed the One Way Up Prison Ministry, where they use their life stories to encourage prison inmates that they too can change their lives. They also spoke at many churches, service organizations, and recovery programs. Together, Sheila and Tony founded “No More Chains”; a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and proceeds raised from these many worldwide events go to specific nonprofit organizations to aid in the fight of the growing epidemic of addiction, incarceration, and human trafficking.
Sheila Raye opened one of her prison speaking engagements by stating:
“I know some of you out there are thinking, ‘Oh, she’s Ray Charles’s daughter; what could she have possibly been through?’ It is only by the grace of God that I’m not sitting in that chair right now."

Passion and optimism permeate the songs he wrote for his fourth album, coming August 4. 

VERONA (15 June 2017): It's been a steady upward trajectory for jazz guitarist Frank Piombo ever since he issued his debut album, "Smooth Reminiscence," independently in 2010. The New Jersey-based musician sold enough units to be ReverbNation's No. 1 jazz artist in the Garden State for three straight years while cultivating a growing fan base in the New York Metropolitan area via his live performances. This past April, he hit the red carpet in Hollywood and went home with three statues from the Indie Music Channel Awards for three tracks from his upcoming fourth album, "Keep It Movin'," providing the perfect launch pad for the new set. Piombo wrote six songs for the disc arriving August 4, and produced and arranged the record with Joe Arminio and Tom Jacobsen. 

Perhaps it's inherent in the culture from which he was spawned, but the Rome, Italy-reared Piombo imbues a sense of quixotic romance and passion into his spirited melodies and sultry grooves on "Keep It Movin'."  The title track, which won him the Best Male Jazz Artist title at the IMC Awards, is as optimistic and chirpy as they come. Illuminated by Michael Mahadeen's whimsical flute and sax flourishes, the record opens with the instrumental version garnering international airplay and closes with a vocal rendition featuring empowering lyrics sung by Arminio. The placid "Al Dente (Tino's Theme)" earned Piombo the Best Easy Listening Song award, a cut on which his cool electric jazz guitar humbly yields the fore to snappy flute, sax and keyboard solos. Piombo & Company ratchet up the tension on "Sunset Beach," a steamy nocturnal number. That theme continues on "Middle Of The Night," a track bolstered by Sam Hankins' heated trumpet explorations that scored the Best Easy Listening Artist victory from the IMC Awards. Nominated for Best Jazz Recording, saxophonist Tony Exum Jr. trades soulful jabs with Piombo on "Rush Hour Funk." Rich authentic Italian sensibilities mesh with improvisational jazz riffing and a robust R&B beat on the charming "Sogno D'Amore." Piombo's crisp guitar etchings thrive in the straight-ahead jazz setting of "Easin' Up."

Two days prior to "Keep It Movin''s" arrival, he will take the outdoor stage as part of the Essex County Summer Music Concert Series in Verona on August 2. The album showcases Carole leading a full band (including guitarist Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, who played on the original Tapestry album) through the album with the bonus addition of some of her personal favorite compositions from her formidable songbook. Guest performers include her daughter, Louise Goffin, who joins Carole on several tracks including “Where You Lead” (which the duo re-recorded as the theme song to the popular television series "Gilmore Girls") plus the Laurence Olivier Award-winning West End cast of "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical."
 
Originally released in 1971, Tapestry established Carole King--already a noted songwriter of smash hits for Aretha Franklin, The Everly Brothers, The Monkees, The Drifters and many others--as an extraordinary performer who defines the singer-songwriter genre from the 1970s onward.
 
The Carole King - Tapestry: Live at Hyde Park package includes the full concert on CD/DVD and is rounded out with insightful recollections from Carole about the making of Tapestry.
 
Leading up to the home release of the CD/DVD, "Carole King: Tapestry – Captured Live at Hyde Park London" will be broadcast to U.S. movie theaters on Tuesday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. (local time). In addition to the full-length concert, this special one-night cinema event includes an interview with King herself, special introduction by the iconic WCBS-FM radio host Scott Shannon, star-studded appearances from Tom Hanks, Elton John, Graham Nash, Lou Adler, Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, James Taylor, David Crosby, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and includes several timeless Goffin/King compositions. Cellar Darling, de band rond Cellar Darling rond ex Eluveitie leden Anna Murphy, Merlin Sutter en Ivo Henzi brengen eenderde trailer voor het te verwachten album ‘This Is The Sound’ dat op 30 juni uitkomt.  In deze clip bepraten de leden de verschillen tussen de nieuwe band en hun oude band Eluveitie. Dellar Darling is ook bevestigd om het voorprogramma van Evanescence te doen met een exclusieve show in de Z7 in Pratteln – Zwitserland op 8 juli. De band noemt het een hele eer om voor Evanescence te mogen openen, temeer nog omdat dit de eerste gelegenheid is om de album release te vieren.

Het gaat bijzonder snel voor Rag’n’Bone Man... Na een wereldwijde tournee trapt hij vol overgave de zomermaanden af met een langverwachte passage op Rock Werchter, op zondag 2 juli. De kolos met het gouden hart kondigt vandaag alvast de data van zijn aankomende Europese najaarstour aan. En ja: ook bij ons is een zaalshow gepland, op 13 november in Vorst Nationaal!
 
Rory Graham, alias Rag’n’Bone Man, dé revelatie van de laatste maanden, is tegenwoordig voor niemand nog een onbekende. Met “Skin” en uiteraard megahit “Human” veroverde hij met sprekend gemak de hele wereld. In ons land was de single goed voor dubbel platina, en haalde zijn gelijknamige debuutalbum goud binnen. Als zijn imposante figuur, baard of tattoos nog niet genoeg indruk maken, dan doet hij het wel met zijn stemtimbre, zijn talenten als componist en songschrijver, en zijn charisma. In april stond hij in ons land nog in een tjokvolle AB, waar hij een vijfsterrenshow liet optekenen. Nu keert hij dus terug om ook dit najaar een groot feest te bouwen met zijn Belgische fans. En plots is daar... Queens Of The Stone Age! De legendarische rockgroep is helemaal terug! Met een nieuwe plaat en heerlijk concertnieuws. QOTSA kondigt een nieuwe tournee aan, die door Noord-Amerika en Europa trekt. Er is een Belgische passage voorzien op donderdag 16 november in het Sportpaleis. ‘Villains’. Zo zal de nieuwste plaat, die op 25 augustus in de rekken ligt, heten. “De titel is geen politieke verklaring. Het heeft niets te maken met Trump of van die shit. Het is gewoon 1) een fantastisch klinkend woord en 2) een reactie op de drie versies van elk scenario: jouw versie, de mijne en wat er effectief is gebeurd... Iedereen heeft iets of iemand nodig om tegenin te kunnen gaan, een ‘villain’ ofte ‘slechterik’. Zo is het altijd geweest. Het is sterker dan jezelf. Het enige wat je kan controleren is wanneer je het loslaat.”, aldus Joshua Homme. Geproduceerd door Mark Ronson, co-produced door Mark Rankin en gemixt door Alan Moulder, is ‘Villains’ het eerste volledige album van Queens Of The Stone Age sinds 2013. Negen nagelnieuwe songs, waarvan eerste single “The Way You Used To Do” alvast een heerlijk voorsmaakje is.

Joshua Homme (zang, gitaar), Troy Van Leeuwen (gitaar, keys), Michael Shuman (basgitaar), Dean Fertita (keys, gitaar) en Jon Theodore (drum) kunnen niet wachten om opnieuw te touren. Amor is een vierkoppig gezelschap uit Phoenix, Arizona. Hun muziek is een mix van krachtige breakdowns, catchy pop melodieën waarmee ze de luisteraar aangenaam verrassen. Voor het debuut ‘Love Vs Logic’ werkte de band samen met producer Matt Good (From first To Last).

Gitarist Ryan Daminson: “ik heb al wat ik had in deze plaat gelegd, het was ongeloofelijk om deze nummers tot leven te horen komen een alles afgewerkt was. Ik ben dan ok zeer tevreden met het resultaat.”
 
Zanger Dillon Conneally: “ het was veel trial en eroor om dit album tot stand te brengen maar al het harde werk heft tot een mooi resultaat geleid dat uitmonde in een in een divers album dat voor iedereen wat heft. Ik ben opgewonden om dit met de wereld te mogen delen.”
 
Intussen gaat Amor onvermoid door met touren ter ondersteuning van de release van dit album.
