Fischer-Z’s 40-year career includes 20 albums and over 3000 concerts worldwide with success spanning continental Europe. Aan de line-up werd vanmiddag in Koksijde The Gibson Brothers toegevoegd, in aanwezigheid van Chris Gibson. Ook Sylver kwam langs in Koksijde. De hitmachine The Gibson Brothers uit Martinique brengt hun salsa vibes naar het Kerkplein in Koksijde deze zomer. Eerder werden ook al Ozark Henry, Stan van Samang, John Miles, Bart Peeters, The Starlings, Sylver en fluittist Gabor Vosteen toegevoegd.

The Gibson Brothers brengen hun zomerse vibes naar Koksijde
The Gibson Brothers uit Martinique touren al 40 jaar de wereld rond met hun aanstekelijke mix van disco en salsa. Hun wereldhits van toen worden nu nog steeds door iedereen woord voor woord meegezongen. “Que sera mi vida”, “Non stop dance” haalden in Vlaanderen zelfs de nummer 1 in de hitllijsten. Maar ook oa. “Come to America”, “Cuba” en “Latin America” haalden de charts bij ons.

Night of the Proms 'Summer Edition' wordt het eerste optreden van The Gibson Brothers na corona. Ze hebben geen moment getwijfeld om terug in België op te treden. Dat vertelde Chris Gibson aan Radio 2: "Over zo'n fantastische kans moesten we niet lang nadenken. België is voor ons heel belangrijk, want 40 jaar geleden is onze carrière hier begonnen. Na alles wat er gebeurd is in het afgelopen jaar is het voor ons een gigantische eer om terug te beginnen in België, waar we zo'n trouw publiek hebben". 

Ook op de 'Summer Edition' zullen de artiesten begeleid worden door een groot orkest. "Met zo'n fantastisch orkest zal ons optreden van een hoger niveau zijn en een heel andere dimensie krijgen dan het publiek normaal van ons gewoon is. De show wordt een echt spektakel!", vertelt Chris Gibson. 

Huidige corona maatregelen

De coronamaatregelen worden op de voet gevolgd. Momenteel worden er enkel zitplaatsen aangeboden, is tussen elke reservatie van tickets een vrije stoel voorzien en is een mondmasker niet langer verplicht tijdens het concert (wanneer het publiek op hun stoel zit). Ook een negatieve PCR-test of vaccinbewijs is niet nodig volgens de huidige protocollen.

Larssen. (mét puntje) is de jonge Gentse muzikant & producer Sasja Maekelberg (broer van Jasper). Hij combineert donkere beats met catchy melodieën. Tel daarbij het samenspel van melancholische, herkenbare lyrics en het resultaat is elektronicapop pur sang. De invloeden van Larssen. zijn onder meer Sohn & Glass Animals. Sasja is zelf grote fan van Nils Frahm & Ólafur Arnalds.
 
Reeds drie keer werd de groep geselecteerd voor De Nieuwe Lichting van Studio Brussel maar bereikte helaas nooit de finale.

De eerste single van Larssen. ‘It’s Like’ werd uitgebracht in februari 2019 en daarna volgden nog twee singles. Deze werden respectievelijk uitgebracht in november 2019 - ‘Mess’ en in augustus 2020 - ‘Make It Right’.
Alle singles werden positief onthaald door Belgische blogs en waren te horen op Studio Brussel. De singles ‘Mess’ en ‘Make It Right’ kregen ook airplay op Radio 1.

Larssen. is momenteel nieuwe nummers aan het schrijven en opnemen voor een EP die gepland is voor het voorjaar van 2022.

SAN DIEGO (22 June 2021): After nearly twenty years as a recording artist plus four months of persistence, patience and promotional pushing from his new record label, soul-jazz saxophonist Isaac Edwards has hit the Billboard singles charts for the first time. Released in early February, “On The Town” finally debuted on the Billboard chart last week at No. 24. The funky R&B instrumental, Isaac’s first single after inking with Next Paradigm Records, was written by the saxman and produced by label head, Jacob Webb, who has produced several Billboard chart toppers.
 
As the world emerges from coronavirus restrictions, the marketplace - and the Billboard charts – have become quite crowded with new releases, especially from marquee artists, which makes Edwards’ chart debut that much more of an accomplishment.
 
“It has been a huge battle at radio this year with just about every A-lister releasing a track, sometimes more. Due to COVID, most of the artists were at home, not touring, and presumedly finishing their tracks, and now they're releasing them. To give you an idea of how hard it has been to hit the Billboard charts this year, this is our 19th week promoting the single at radio! It took this long to debut on Billboard, but we never gave up! It is rare for a single to take this long to hit the charts and there were lots of moments when we thought that we weren't going to make it, but we did. Now we are on the chart with a bunch of A-listers,” said an excited Isaac. 
 
“On The Town” features Isaac’s alto saxophone engaging in a discourse with Randall Haywood’s flugelhorn. The groove is anchored by drummer Kevin Bowden and Webb’s rubbery basslines with melodies added by Webb’s keyboards and programming along with Sonny Dumarsais’ piercing electric guitar riffs. COVID precautions and geographic distance required that all of the tracks except for sax to be recorded at Webb’s New York studio compound while the saxophone tracks were laid down in a vocal booth set up in Edwards’ San Diego home.      
 
Edwards has released three albums since the early 2000s, juggling his desire to be a jazz musician with busy days in court as a litigation attorney. His recording projects have incorporated jazz, R&B, pop, rock and gospel, and have included collaborations with GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum, multiple GRAMMY nominee Darren Rahn, and Joel Kibble, a 10-time GRAMMY-winning member of Take 6. Edwards’ 2002 gospel-jazz album, “Here,” was nominated for a Vibe Award, Canada’s Dove Awards equivalent. He studied under the tutelage of noted saxophonists Eric Marienthal and Jeff Clayton and has opened concerts for multiple GRAMMY winners Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith.      
 
Last July, Edwards dropped the independent single, “Bird Rock,” which not only garnered national airplay from SiriusXM’s Watercolors, but captured Webb’s attention, leading to the recording pact with Next Paradigm.   
 
“The title for ‘On The Town’ came to me during the recording process. I had just signed the record deal and it made me think that I had really stepped up my game. I have released albums and singles before, but this is the first time I had a label behind me. I guess you could say that it made me feel like I was really on the music scene, or ‘on the town,’” said Edwards.

​The Isley Brothers got honored in a major way with two streets named after them in New Jersey. 
Truly a full-circle moment since they used to live there, but they’re originally from Cincinnati. Ron Isley resided in Teaneck, Ernie lived in Englewood and another brother, Rudolph, lived in Irvington.
The first ceremony was on Van Arsdale and Van Cortlandt Terrace in Teaneck, and the new street name is Isley Brothers Way. The second street naming happened on Liberty Road and Greenleaf Avenue in Englewood.
As reported on ABC, Ernie Isley said this is a “wow” moment. He went on to say, “This is a spectacular culmination of a lot of dreams and a lot of prayers.” 
Ron Isley was filled with emotion but also ecstatic. He said to the crowd, “It’s beyond words for me to express my level of appreciation and gratitude. I love you people, and I thank you for loving me, for loving us, and for loving the Isley Brothers.”

Oslo-based art rock trio Dim Gray play melody-driven songs in a post-progressive vein, incorporating elements from folk music into a forward-thinking aesthetic that results in a hauntingly evocative sound. A wide and sophisticated palette of sounds and ideas is rooted in yearning vocals and subtly reverb-ed guitars.

The group’s debut album, ‘Flown’, was released digitally in 2020. To coincide with the brand new release of its physical 2xLP and CD formats (with bonus songs), a live video of album song ‘Dreamer’s Disease’ has been made available. Twisting the expression used at the beginning of 'You Get What You Give', a late 90’s hit by New Radicals, ‘Dreamer’s Disease’ is described by Dim Gray as “a song about being trapped in a state of apathy and the process of escaping it. It is incredibly fun to play live, alternating between heavy riffs and tender moments, including an expansive instrumental section featuring a menacing folk riff that builds and builds.”
The three group members - Håkon Høiberg, Oskar Holldorff and Tom Ian Klungland - all moved from different parts of Norway to its capital city in 2012 in order to continue their studies. Having found each other, they soon began writing and performing together. The trio have contrasting musical backgrounds in genres as diverse as black metal, progressive rock, blues, folk and film music, but in fusing these together they have developed something distinctive and unique.

2020 saw the band issue the songs ‘Ráth', ‘Again', 'Light Anew' and ‘Ouroboros' prior to the initial digital release of ‘Flown’. A concept record with intertwining songs structured as one continuous story, the album relates a vivid tale of loss and loneliness that constantly twists and turns, with intimate and spatial moments offset with massive and colourful soundscapes. Describing their lyrical approach, the band explain that “rather than tell a linear story, we attempted to structure it as a circular narrative, with the protagonist trapped in a downward spiral, a vicious cycle without a clear beginning or ending. The story can be interpreted in various ways, but the lyrical themes remain centred around loss, longing and loneliness, and the psychological toll these feelings can take on a person.”

Musically, ‘Flown’ weaves a route from strings-infused chamber pop, through dark indie folk and into grandiose art rock. It is an ambitious musical statement that will appeal to fans of artists such as Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Steven Wilson, Sigur Rós and Susanne Sundfør.

Four songs have been added to the album for its release on 2xLP and CD formats.

Jimmy Colman is geen onbekende in de muziekbusiness. Hij bracht als Jim Cole in 2008 en 2011 twee succesvolle albums uit en scoorde hits op StuBru, Radio1 en Radio2.
 
Ook de schrijvende pers was gretig met woorden van lof: HUMO, P-Magazine, De Standaard, Het Laatste Nieuws, De Morgen, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet Van Antwerpen, Metro en De Krant Van West-Vlaanderen. 
 
Ook in Nederland werd hij opgemerkt door Radio2 en 3FM. In 2016 werd hij verliezend finalist in The Voice van Vlaanderen en sinds 2018 brengt hij samen met zijn collectief Minneapolis de hits van Prince weer tot leven.
 
Sinds november 2020 echter legt Jim zijn eigen muzikaal artistiek ei volledig in het Nederlands met onder andere de melancholische nummers 'Zonder Zorgen' en 'De Tijd'.

Barbara Pravi zette een fenomenale prestatie neer op het Eurovisie Songfestival 2021. De Franse zangeres eindigde tweede, maar ging niet met lege handen naar huis. Haar lied Voilà werd bekroond als beste lied door de geaccrediteerde pers en Pravi ontving ook de prijs van beste artistieke act uitgereikt door de commentatoren. 
 
Barbara Pravi, opgegroeid in een kunstenaarsfamilie in Parijs met Iraanse & Servisch roots, is dé grote revelatie in het genre van het Franse chanson. Ze wordt in één adem genoemd met iconen als Jacques Brel en Édith Piaf. Elk nummer dat ze uit haar buffetpiano tovert, doet de luisteraar zweven. Barbara’s stem wisselt tedere klanken af met grootse uithalen en geeft tegelijk scherpe en zeemzoete songteksten muzikaal gestalte. Barbara Pravi deelt haar emoties en fluistert ons liefelijk en met een ontwapenende eenvoud haar passie voor het Franse chanson in.

De Kameroense zanger Wes Madiko is op 57-jarige leeftijd overleden in het Franse Alençon. Onder zijn artiestennaam Wes werd Madiko in 1997 wereldberoemd met het nummer ‘Alane’.

Het was de familie van Madiko die op sociale media het nieuws bekendmaakte dat de zanger in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag was overleden. De zanger lag al verschillende dagen in het ziekenhuis en zou eerder geopereerd zijn nadat hij een ziekenhuisinfectie had opgelopen.
‘Een legende is van ons heengegaan’, meldde de familie. ‘Hij heeft vanuit zijn ziekenhuisbed nog een laatste boodschap van vrede voor de mensheid gebracht, die zullen we de komende dagen bekendmaken.’

Madiko begon muziek te maken in zijn geboorteland Kameroen, en trok in 1987 naar Europa. Tien jaar later werd hij wereldberoemd met zijn zomerhit ‘Alane’. Wereldwijd werden er meer dan 10 miljoen singles van verkocht. Een ander nummer van de zanger ‘In Youpendi’ werd gebruikt in de Disney-film The lion king.

Emily Wolfe is an Austin, Texas based singer-songwriter and guitarist who has spent the last few years making a name for herself as an electrifying, live rock solo artist. Described as the sonic merging of PJ Harvey and Jack White, her 2019 self-titled debut album was co-produced with Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes.
Its brand new follow-up, ‘Outlier’, is produced by Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age, Mini Mansions) and marries Wolfe's rock roots with the soaring choruses of modern pop, exploring and obliterating the boundaries of both and arriving at a guitar-drenched sound that is wildly unpredictable yet immediately magnetic. It is an album built on exquisite tension: an endless push-and-pull between desire and resistance, determination and self-sabotage, the instinctive need to belong and the urge to strike out on one’s own in its bold but masterful genre-bending.  
Wolfe explains that "I wanted to try something new and different. I wanted to step outside of the blues-rock box and see what else could happen. This record is my attempt at crossing genres between classic '70s rock, '80s pop, '90s grunge and modern pop elements. I wanted to see how far I could push my boundaries musically while still holding onto my integrity as a guitar player. ‘Outlier’ is a huge indicator of where I'm headed as an artist. My goal is to create well-crafted rock songs with polished pop production, but stay true to myself as a lover of guitar solos."

Wolfe’s guitar skills have long been acknowledged, with Epiphone/Gibson even launching a signature model Sheraton Stealth for her in March 2021. Elaborating on both her guitar and vocal chops, Shuman adds that “Emily is an insane guitar player and has a beautiful, raw voice that is so hard to find these days. That rawness is as genuine as she is as a human being, and is reflected in her vulnerable and honest lyrics. She carries true musicianship and a deep knowledge of all genres of music. I think we were a great match for making ‘Outlier’ together. We both had the same vision of making a timeless rock ’n roll record with a hint of pop sensibility and modern production. I think we have accomplished just that.”
Album opener (and current single) 'No Man’ sees Wolfe present a powerful introduction to the aesthetic of ‘Outlier', adding jagged synth as well as her blistering guitar work to the song’s message of fearless self-sufficiency (sample lyric: “Don’t need no man to tell me how to work my machine”). “I wrote it out of passion and rage, and for every person who has ever felt stifled in their endeavours,” she states. “It was written after a few situations where I had people telling me I needed a man to help me out with certain aspects of my music. It came from a place of frustration and rage, but really it’s about independence, how I don’t need anyone but myself to do what I want to do.”

By contrast, introductory single ‘Something Better’ opens with a thrumming synth-pop beat that transforms into a buoyant rock tune with a hypnotic guitar melody, flawlessly showing off the confident, intriguing and always unpredictable nature of her new sound. “This was written at a difficult time in my life, when I was working hard toward a future but wasn't sure if that future would ever come. But, with the pandemic, it feels more like a universal song about wanting change and not knowing when things are going to be okay. I wanted to take my love of ’80s and ’90s music and twist it with modern pop sounds. I wanted it to sound fresh, but familiar.”

Elsewhere, ‘LA/NY’ unfolds as an emphatic refusal to conform, matching its soulful urgency with an undeniable sweetness, while on ‘Vermillion Park’ Wolfe shares a harmony-laced piece of storytelling threaded with vividly detailed teenage memories. “That one starts out as a song about a relationship I had in high school, but by the end it’s about who I am now and my relationship with my wife, who is really the inspiration behind most of my songs,” she reveals. Closing out with the woozy romanticism of ‘Heavenly Hell’, the album shows off her evolution as a songwriter.

“I reached a point where I thought to myself, ‘Okay, I can shred onstage, whatever. Lots of people can do that, but not everyone can craft a great song,'" says Wolfe. “I’m so used to seeking comfort in a guitar solo, but for this record I wanted to focus on creating songs that will stand the test of time. That’s what really matters the most to me now.” This shift in approach has essentially reshaped her identity as an artist

“Making this record aligned with my journey as a person, and helped me grow into someone who no longer sees things in black and white. It taught me that I don’t have to try to fit into one box. I can take the energy of rock and blues, which is very on-the-fly and spontaneous and raw, and blend that with the polish of pop music, where everything is much more intentional. I feel like I’m a totally different musician now than I was five years ago, like I’ve grown into myself. I’m finally able to show people who I am and not be afraid of it.”

Acclaimed pianist Anders Helmerson leads bassist Lukasz Chula and drummer Juan Meija as the Anders Helmerson Trio ahead of the anticipated release of their second album: Opus i. Its DNA intertwined through classical music, folklore, prog rock, and all that lay between, the album sees the band pay homage to those that came before while progressing jazz like no other. Unsatisfied with the genre dormant, the Anders Helmerson Trio infuse a technology and futurism inspired philosophy to bring new life to contemporary jazz.
 
This signature sound is heralded by the album’s lead track iSchertzo, a piece rooted in a pulsating bass and ever-changing drums that Anders’ masterful piano dances across. Listeners would be forgiven for struggling to define the piece. Part jazz fusion, part prog rock, the song shifts between its layers creating the presence of a totally engulfing soundscape from only its humble three-piece makings. Moments of respite prime listeners for the awe of explosive piano runs that move between feelings of percussion and the softness of tender vocals.

​NEW YORK (21 June 2021): How the principal clarinetist and soloist from West Point’s Army Special Band decided to make her debut recording an authentic Brazilian album on which she plays and sings in Portuguese in jazz big band settings is a story centered on love more than a decade in the making. There is also an Olympic connection to the release of Kristen Mather de Andrade’s global music offering “Clarão,” which drops July 23, the same day as the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics. 
 
Mather de Andrade was enamored by Brazilian music at a young age, and her affinity rose to the next level when she met and married a Brazilian man in 2011. Desiring to immerse herself in the culture, the classically trained clarinetist and saxophonist began learning songs in Portuguese in order to learn the language. She started playing choros, classic instrumental Brazilian pop music dating back a century ago, finding that the style suits the clarinet. To celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympic athletes, Mather de Andrade performed a handful of tunes live on the West Point Band Facebook page. The enthusiastic response even garnered coverage from the Brazilian media. The seeds were planted and have blossomed into “Clarão,” which means “flash of light.” Teaming with producer Sergio Krakowski helped bring this passion project together.
 
“I wanted to show the diversity of Brazil in the music selections on this album. I learned so much from the music producer, Sergio Krakowski, who really helped me dig deeper into the styles that I was already familiar with and find some music that was really interesting and would flatter the band. I wanted to showcase music beyond Bossa Nova and bring attention to some amazing styles and composers that I have found so inspiring,” said Mather de Andrade, a Youngstown, Ohio native now based just outside of New York City.
 
With Krakowski’s assistance, Mather de Andrade gathered several Brazilian musicians to accompany her and selected the repertoire. Half of “Clarão” is comprised of instrumental covers, three of which are performed big band-style and were made famous by Brazilian clarinetists. The album includes four original songs penned by Brazilian singer-songwriter Roque Ferriera, tunes that showcase Mather de Andrade’s silken, yearnful voice singing sublimely in Portuguese. Krakaowski relied upon genuine Brazilian instrumentation from Vitor Gonçalves (accordion), Cesar Garabini (violão) and Eduardo Belo (bass) while playing pandeiro himself. A lively four-piece horn section adds luster to the ten-track album brimful of exuberance, lush harmonies and masterful musicianship.
 
The recording process began two summers ago with Mather de Andrade recording live with the horns and rhythm section. She recorded her vocals just prior to the coronavirus quarantine, which delayed the project’s completion and forced some additional accordion and pandeiro tracks to be added remotely. Mather de Andrade describes “Clarão” as a multicultural offering.
 
“What I like about the album is the uniquely ‘New York’ experience: the horns are all American, the rhythm section is all Brazilian, and the arrangers are American and Brazilian. We had a French guitarist - the studio owner was Italian - there were a ton of languages flying around the sessions. It was a great combination of talents to create a sound that I have come away thinking is just as much ‘New York’ as it is Brazilian,” said Mather de Andrade of the global music record quilted together from swatches of Brazilian music, jazz and classical.
 
Preceding the album release, an animated video for the song “Guelê Guelê” created by the record’s bassist, Belo, will be released on June 25. The tune is one of the originals composed by Ferriera. Mather de Andrade said, “Roque Ferreira is a major composer from the North East of Brazil in the style of Bahian Samba. His style is very evocative and creates vivid imagery, which lent itself to an animated video treatment.”
 
To launch the album, Mather de Andrade will perform selections from “Clarão” on August 8 at 6pm ET accompanied by several of the musicians who performed on the album during a special livestream event broadcast from Studio 42 Brooklyn using Stretto.live, a new interactive visual platform that enables audiences to work together to control certain aspects of a performance in real time and provide the performer with visual feedback they can see and react to while performing.
 
Mather de Andrade has been with the West Point Band since 2007. She also plays with, co-founded and serves as artistic director for the New York City-area ensemble Vent Nouveau, which performs and records music for woodwinds and brass, as well as the mixed instrument group Quintette 7. Mather de Andrade has performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and The Kennedy Center. Equally important to the artist, she uses music to unify and breakdown barriers culminating in performances in countless schools, veterans’ homes, and three prisons. Platenlabel Rhino brengt op 30 juli voor het eerst een boxset uit die haar gehele carrière overspant inclusief materiaal dat nog niet eerder is uitgekomen. 'ARETHA' verschijnt op CD, 2LP en 4CD boxset.

De tracklist van ARETHA bestaat uit maar liefst 81 nieuw geremasterde nummers gerangschikt op chronologische volgorde. De collectie is een overzicht van haar werk dat ze bij verschillende labels heeft uitgebracht waaronder J.V.B records, Columbia Records, Atlantic Records en Arista Records. Rhino's nieuwe boxset verschijnt kort voor de première van Respect, de langverwachte biopic over Franklins leven met in de hoofdrol Jennifer Hudson. De film is vanaf 2 september in de Nederlandse bioscopen te zien.

Summer Nights Fever Festival  Nieuwe toevoeging aan de affiche:

Lessines/Lessen (vlakbij Geraardsbergen) zal deze zomer zeker een van de aangenaamste topplaatsen zijn voor de herstart van het concert / festival seizoen in ons land. 
Met Balthazar voegt het festival een concert toe aan de affiche van een van onze meest prominente alternatieve rockbands. Ze op staan op 19 augustus in het groene amfitheater aan de Dender van het "Hopital Notre Dame à la Rose".

De voorverkoop begint op donderdag 24 juni om 11 uur. Zoals bij alle shows van ‘Summer Nights Fever’ festival worden tickets per stuk verkocht. De support act wordt later bekendgemaakt.

 Het festivalterrein en ontvangst van het publiek
Summer Nights Fever speelt zich af op de weide van het oude "Hopital Notre Dame à la Rose" in Lessines, (Lessen, vlakbij Geraardsbergen). Een groen amfitheater langs een zijtak van de Dender en in de schaduw van het prestigieuze Hôtel-Dieu uit de 16e eeuw.
Het podium staat aan de rivier. Het publiek staat opgesteld in de weide ervoor, die zacht glooiend naar het podium afloopt. Een natuurlijk, met bomen omzoomd amfitheater, een open plek op twee straten van de Grote Markt van de stad.
De camping ligt aan de Ravel, het jaagpad van de Dender, waar prachtige wandelingen mogelijk zijn. De organisatie biedt in dat verband ook een fietsverhuurservice aan. 

De geldende Covidnormen worden uiteraard steeds gerespecteerd en aangepast waar nodig en mogelijk.
Momenteel is het terrein ontworpen om het publiek te ontvangen in groepen van maximaal 8 personen. Elke bubbel bestaat uit een kleine zithoek gemaakt van hergebruikte materialen (pallets, verkeersborden, oude meubels, banken, enz. Een comfortabele en sympathieke setting).
Het dragen van een masker is alleen verplicht bij verplaatsingen. Eenmaal op hun ‘eiland’ kunnen toeschouwers zitten, staan, dansen, drinken, eten... ter plaatse. In een groep van acht vrienden wordt dit  .
De set up kan onmiddellijk worden gewijzigd mochten de gezondheidsmaatregelen versoepelen.
Wanneer staande voorstellingen mogelijk zijn, worden de zitplaatsen naar achteren verplaatst en dus hoger op het terrein. Zo kan het publiek kiezen om het concert staand vooraan te bekijken of zittend achteraan met een uitstekend uitzicht.
Belangrijke opmerking: tickets worden per stuk verkocht en niet per bubbel.

 


Summer Nights Fever, genieten van muziek, én gastronomisch rendez-vous !
In Lessines hebben we trouwens niet op Ronaldo gewacht: het is al 20 jaar geleden dat de industriële softs en bieren uit de supermarkten werden gebannen. Uitsluitend fris / vruchtensappen en uitstekende bieren van lokale en ambachtelijke productie staan op het menu. En wijnen gekozen om hun kwaliteit en ethische productie.
Wat het eten betreft: alles wordt ter plaatse bereid door de teams van het festival, met uitsluitend lokale producten van topkwaliteit, afkomstig van een eerlijke landbouw. De organisatie heeft altijd zo gewerkt, niet omdat het nu modieus is, maar gewoon omdat het beter is. En anneen het beste is genoeg voor ons publiek. In de loop der jaren zijn het Roots & Roses Festival en alle activiteiten van CC René Magritte quasi gastronomische evenementen geworden.
Summer Nights Fever is het werk van vakmensen, en een vakman heeft graag controle over alles wat hij maakt en organiseert, om zo het vertrouwen van zijn bezoekers te verdienen. In Lessines is de toeschouwer nooit zomaar een nummer !

Rodrigo Leão's nieuwe single Friend of a Friend, met vocals en tekst van de Canadese singer-songwriter Michelle Gurevich, is nu uit. Het is de eerste single van het nieuwe album A Estranha Beleza da Vida, dat in oktober zal verschijnen bij BMG en vanaf nu ook in voorverkoop verkrijgbaar is. Het nieuwe album zal tevens Rodigo's eerste  'post-covid' live-concerten meebrengen, ook in Belgie.

​Doorheen zijn carrière heeft Rodrigo sommige van zijn platen gecomponeerd en geconcipieerd alsof het films waren of een verhaal dat verteld moest worden. Net als in een film komt het aan op het casten van de stemmen die elk personage van het verhaal tot leven zullen brengen. Rodrigo voegt er dan de geluiden en stemmingen aan toe om de uiteindelijke versie te maken die elke plaat zijn eigen diversiteit en identiteit geeft, gedicteerd door elk van zijn verhalen. Dit zag je ook in albums als Alma Mater, Cinéma of A Mãe, waar het verhaal wordt verteld door de gastzangers die de personages belichamen. Al deze platen hebben niet alleen een muziekstijl of genre gemeen, maar tevens het idee van een album als een film, en van cinema als de wereld.
 
Friend of a Friend keert terug naar dit concept door Michelle Gurevich te casten als een personage. Rodrigo zegt dat het een van zijn favoriete nummers van het nieuwe album is: "dit nummer is ontstaan uit mijn zoektocht naar een vrolijk ritme, beïnvloed door de muziek van de jaren vijftig, en gaf me het enthousiasme dat ik nodig had om nieuwe ideeën te zoeken. Karen Ruimy is the definition of multifaceted. Undertaking many paths in her life, from an author, singer-songwriter, dancer and creative director of the lifestyle brand KALMAR she is ready to launch into a new type of creative expression. After 7 years working in the bond market, Karen embarked on a spiritual quest which led her to become a dancer and singer performing the acclaimed dance piece Zik’r and other successful shows including Flamenka, in Paris, India, Morocco, London and at the Edinburgh festival. She has written several spiritual books, launched a spiritual App and also created the much-loved and sought-after lifestyle, fashion and beauty brand Kalmar.

After releasing several albums, starting with Flamenka (La musique du spectacle) in 2006, Karen is now set to release 2 cover EPs with tracks in English and French with more of an ambient Jazz twist. The last produced material from the eminent producer Phil Ramone made before he passed away in 2013. Youth (Killing Joke and Paul McCartney's band member in The Fireman) and Tim Bran (London Grammar etc.) have added additional production. The result is a decadent selection of covers that more than stand on their own, covering The Mamas & the Papas to Radiohead and some French classics in between. The first EP will be called 'Black Coffee' and is set for release on 6th August, with the first single also titled 'Black Coffee' set for release 9th July).

NEW YORK, June 22, 2021 –  As the jazz world slowly emerges from the more than year-long pandemic, the New Orleans-born alto saxophonist Donald Harrison – the critically-acclaimed, innovative musician with four decades of experience as an instrumentalist, sideman and leader who has worked with everyone from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and salsa legend Eddie Palmieri, to the legendary rapper Notorious B.I.G. – unleashed a flurry of new projects, along with some prominent news features.
 
On May 8, Harrison was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music from his Alma Mater, Berklee College of Music, as part of the virtual Class of 2021 commencement. As President Roger Brown stated, Harrison was awarded his doctorate for “his creativity, innovation and lasting impact on jazz.” Accepting his award, Harrison spoke of how heartwarming it was to “receive an Honorary Doctorate and have the opportunity to communicate my experiences with our students, their parents, guardians, and advocates of music.”
 
Harrison is featured in the new global video production of the New Orleans R&B standard, “Iko Iko,” produced by the Playing for Change Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world, and creating hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. The video features musicians performing from Ghana, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Panama, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, Los Angeles and New Orleans, featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann (both of The Grateful Dead), Ivan Neville, the late Dr. John and Harrison, chanting and playing the saxophone in his stunning Congo Nation, Afro-New Orleans-inspired attire. “I’m an Afro-New Orleans cultural participant,” Harrison says. “I know the secrets that go all the way back to Africa, and how they were used in jazz, and I'm probably the only jazz musician who knows that.” Harrison formed Congo Nation, an Afro-New Orleans cultural group in 1999, and learned those chants from his father, Donald Sr.
 
Harrison is also set to release his first single of the year, entitled “Upper Stratus,” his take on John Coltrane’s complex, supersonically syncopated 1959 composition, “Countdown,” from Harrison’s latest two-disc CD, The Eclectic Jazz Revolution of Unity. “What I noticed about John Coltrane is that he played basically eight notes on “Giant Steps” and “Countdown,” … Harrison says, “so I figured out how to add all these other tiny spaces where you're doubling up, playing across the time and putting forms inside of forms, and to my surprise, the musicians are saying that I actually moved Trane forward to another perspective.”
 
Harrison’s latest CD, also features “Stepper’s Paradise,” a grooving, track composed for the Chicago-based, urban dance genre, called Steppin,’ which features his daughter Victoria Harrison on vocals. The compilation also includes “Congo Square,” a three-part symphonic opus Harrison composed and recorded with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in 2015. “The first movement is a chant with drums and percussion,” Harrison says. “The second movement features the orchestra utilizing those real life chants from Congo Square, and the third movement features the jazz band with the symphonic orchestra.”
 
The saxophonist’s other recent releases include his multi-genre single, “The Magic Touch,” which combines two versions of the composition – a 2007 acoustic version featuring pianist Victor Gould and a 2005 smooth jazz track featuring trumpeter Chris Botti, guitarist Chuck Loeb and members of the soul group Maze. In 2019, Harrison released his swinging, straight-ahead take on Lil Nas X’s mega-hit single, “Old Town Road.”
 
In his four decades on the scene, Harrison has contributed three genres to the jazz continuum. He created an Upsouth version of his hometown’s parade rhythms called the New York Second Line, which was the title of the 1983 album he co-led with Terence Blanchard. In the nineties, he debuted his concept of Nouveau Swing: his jazz-inflected mix of soul, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, soul and hip-hop, which can be heard on the albums, Nouveau Swing and Free to Be. In the early 21st Century, he unveiled his quantum jazz concept on his 2010 CD, Quantum Leap, where “the African drums had a link to quantum physics, because the drummers of West Africa are connected to the universe,” Harrison says, “which led me to understand that we think of music in two dimensions, and through Quantum Jazz, I can hear music in four dimensions, with new ideas in time in every direction.”
 
Harrison is a presence on the TV and the silver screen. He’s featured in the recent Christopher Wallace/Notorious B.I.G. Netflix documentary, Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell, as an early music tutor to the rapper. “I was initially trying to groom Chris to be a jazz artist, because he was so talented,” Harrison says in the documentary. “One of the things we worked on was putting what a snare did in bebop drumming into the rhythm of a rhyme. We listened to Max Roach with Clifford Brown … Max has a very melodic way of playing the drums … Notorious B.I.G. was accenting those notes in a way that exudes all of the qualities of a bebop drummer.” Harrison has also mentored many musicians, including his nephew, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Esperanza Spalding, Trombone Shorty and Jon Batiste.
 
“I remember coming up trying to figure things out musically, trying to figure out how to lead a band, how to be a performer, how to play my instrument on the highest level possible. Donald Harrison is considered to be one of the greatest educators in the last 50 years for anyone, in any style of music,” said Batiste about his mentor.
 
In the HBO series Treme, Emmy-winning director David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music, and he appeared in nine episodes. Harrison was also featured in Oscar-winning director Johnathon Demme’s film, Rachel Getting Married, Spike Lee’s When The Levees Broke documentary, Marvel’s Netflix series Luke Cage, and he had a cameo as a child in the James Bond 1973 film, Live and Let Die.

Harrison continues touring throughout September and October with performances in Long Island, Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver and several dates at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
 
An articulate spokesman for jazz, Harrison is often quoted and featured in newspapers and magazines. In a February 22, 2021 USA Today article about New Orleans music, Harrison remarked on how modern musicians channel the spirit of New Orleans music, “even though the players today don’t have a consciousness of … some of those things are still at the root of what we call jazz music.” Harrison has also been featured in Hot House, Jazziz, JazzTimes, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, among others.
 
New Orleans is the source of Harrison’s multifaceted musicianship. Born there on June 23, 1960, Harrison grew up playing with the same broad approach to music that Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and all of his forebears did, playing jazz, funk, R&B, Latin, blues, gospel and traditional New Orleans music. Harrison is a graduate of the famed New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (/NOCCA), which also included Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr. and future partner Terence Blanchard. He attended Southern University before he transferred to Berklee.
 
Harrison has recorded 17 recordings as a leader and performed and recorded with over 250 musicians, including Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Dr. John, Lena Horne, McCoy Tyner, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Digable Planets, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The Headhunters and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a long-standing member of Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri’s ensembles, and is a member of the jazz collective, The Cookers. “The lessons of all those great masters gave me the real deal, not out of a book,” Harrison says.
 
A truly multi-dimensional musician, Donald Harrison continues to go forward and is boldly heading where no jazz musician has gone before. ‘I’m trying to learn as much as I can from the masters, and see where the music takes me.”

​Voor zijn nieuwste album “I Was A Witness” heeft Malford Milligan besloten iedereen een inkijkje te geven in zijn “inner soul”.
 
Beïnvloed en aangegrepen door alle gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen anderhalf jaar vertelt Malford openhartig en aangrijpend zijn verhaal hoe het geweest is om eind 60-er / begin 70-er jaren op te groeien als zwarte albino in een gesegregeerd Texas.
 
Een beklijvend en tegelijk ontroerend relaas vormgegeven in 11 nieuwe songs, waarvan het overgrote deel mede geschreven is door drie bandleden van The Southern Aces, plus zoals gebruikelijk een bijpassende song van dierbare vriend en songwriter Stephen Bruton.
 
Het is een meer dan waardige opvolger van het succes-album ‘Life Will Humble You’ uit 2018 geworden, wederom geproduceerd door Jack Hustinx.
 
“I Was A Witness” komt op 24 september uit op zowel CD, vinyl als digitaal, met schitterend bijpassend artwork en er zal vanaf de releasedatum anderhalf jaar uitgebreid getourd gaan worden langs de bekende clubzalen en theaters.

​Mithra Jazz is eindelijk terug van 23 tot 26 september in de mooiste zalen van het centrum van Luik!  Na anderhalf jaar van cultureel dieet en uitstel, hopen wij u weer te zien met een onmetelijke honger naar muziek en naar jazz in al zijn vormen.

Vindt het concert van Ibrahim Maalouf plaats op 8 december, dan zullen Kurt Elling met het Charlie Hunter Quartet, Thomas Dutronc en Camille in september aanwezig zijn om de prachtige zaal van het Forum, dat binnenkort zijn 100-jarig bestaan viert, te betoveren.  

Tijdens deze jubileumeditie zullen opnieuw verschillende generaties musici elkaars pad kruisen in de Cité Ardente. Aan de ene kant gevestigde artiesten zoals Erik Truffaz, Steve Coleman Five Elements, en Bill Frisell Trio, die erop gebrand zullen zijn om de relevantie, diversiteit en moderniteit van hun muziek aan te tonen (als ze dat nog moeten doen...).

Daartegenover staat de nieuwe Engelse scene die ons al een paar jaar verbaast, en die ook nu weer goed vertegenwoordigd zal zijn met Portico Quartet, Ill Considered, Binker & Moses, Mammal Hands en Wildflower.  

Matthew Halsall zal zijn nieuwe album voorstellen, 6 jaar nadat hij het Palais des Congrès had betoverd tijdens zijn eerste bezoek aan het festival.  

We zullen ook het genoegen hebben enkele oude bekenden en vaste gasten van het festival weer te ontmoeten zoals Aka Moon met een prachtig werk rond Beethovens sonate Opus 111, maar ook Eric Legnini in trio, of Jean-Paul Estievenart in kwartet en Antoine Pierre met zijn uitstekende Urbex-project. Ook de niet te klasseren Belgische bands Stuff!, Tukan, Yökai, Commander Spoon en Dans Dans zullen ons komen verblijden, zonder de betoverende fluit van de getalenteerde Esinam of de afterparty met Lefto te vergeten.

Onze inmiddels jaarlijkse afspraak met de blues krijgt gestalte in een dubbelconcert van de Fransman Ronan One Man Band en de Brit Dollar Bill in de Brasserie Sauvenière.  

Liefhebbers van meer "klassieke" jazz kunnen in de Cité Miroir applaudisseren voor de charmante Robin McKelle en het Raphaël Chevalier Duflot Rebob Quintet. De avontuurlijke Guillaume Perret zal er ook zijn.

Tot slot verwelkomen we op het kruispunt van jazz, wereldmuziek en neoklassieke muziek de terugkeer van pianist Jean-Christophe Renault, die zijn laatste en zeer mooie album zal voorstellen en zijn set zal opluisteren met de stemmen van Thierry Devillers en Malabika Brahma.

In meer dan een opzicht heeft deze dertigste editie de geur van vrijheid...

Elton John kondigt zijn terugkeer naar het podium aan. In het najaar 2021 herneemt de legende zijn "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour in Antwerpen. Na een uitverkocht concert in het voorjaar van 2019 en door de overweldigende vraag van de Belgische fans voegde Elton John toen twee extra concerten toe aan zijn ultieme afscheidstournee in 2020. Door de pandemie werden deze concerten verplaatst naar zaterdag 16 en zondag 17 oktober 2021. Het concert van 16 oktober is uitverkocht, maar er zijn nog tickets beschikbaar voor het concert op zondag 17 oktober 2021 via greenhousetalent.com 
 
Wie dacht dat Elton zich - samen met zijn platina platen, ontelbare prijzen en onderscheidingen - zou terugtrekken op een onbewoond eiland, had het mis. Voor hij zich volop op zijn gezin concentreert, wil hij graag in stijl afscheid nemen van het tourleven en zijn publiek. In 2019 verschenen 'Rocketman’, de biopic over het leven van Elton John, en zijn autobiografie 'Ik Elton John’.
 
Meer dan vijftig jaar na zijn debuut zullen Elton en zijn indrukwekkende band live terugblikken op zijn rijkgevulde carrière. Hij zal zijn fans trakteren op klassiekers als 'Your Song’, 'Daniel’, 'Tiny Dancer’, 'Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’, 'Rocket Man’, 'Bennie and the Jets’ en 'Crocodile Rock’. Onder de gloed van de spots zal de flamboyante zanger/pianist datgene doen waarvoor hij geboren is: zijn geliefde publiek in extase brengen!

A song she penned together with guitarist Chris Bergström and it is the first of her own songs to be released.
 
Blues is a big influence on Lily and as her previous releases Catfight is a Bluesy gem!

Op zaterdag 21 augustus organiseren wij de 33ste editie van ons festival Swing Wespelaar. De maandenlange onzekerheid i.v.m. het organiseren van festivals wegens Covid 19 en het beperkte aanbod van Amerikaanse bands heeft ons doen besluiten om een ééndagseditie te organiseren met meer Belgische bands in de hoofdrol. De buitenlandse acts zijn de Italiaanse bluesrockgitariste Eliana Cargnelutti en Amerikaanse Hill Country bluesartiest CW Ayon.

Het Festival gaat door in school Klimop, Elisabeth Willemslaan 4 te Wespelaar.
Toegang tot het Festival is gratis!

Wij blijven coronamaatregelen opvolgen, maar volgens de geplande afbouw van restricties zullen wij één van de eerste festivals zijn waar de meeste maatregelen vervallen: geen mondmaskers of 1,5 meter afstandregel. Eén van de voorwaardes zal wel zijn dat toeschouwer dubbel gevaccineerd zal moeten zijn of een recente negatieve PCR test zal moeten aantonen.
