 A half-century after his landmark “What’s Going On” album was released, legendary Motown singer Marvin Gaye had a street named after him in Detroit.
The street naming was unveiled during an event hosted by Motown Museum and Detroit City Councilman Roy McCalister. It was attended by Gaye’s youngest brother, Antwaun Gay -- the family’s original surname -- and Dylan Holley, Gaye’s grandson. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence also attended the ceremony, which was held on a rainy day in the city. The intersection of Outer Drive and Monica Street is just yards from the home where Gaye lived with his first wife, Anna Gordy, for seven years, the newspaper reported. The backyard of the property was the scene of the photoshoot 50 years ago that produced the iconic cover for Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album. “To be here on this day is just a beautiful thing,” said Gay, who was just a year old when “What’s Going On” was released, the newspaper reported. “I remember it moved me to tears,” Gay said recalling when he listened to the album as an 8-year-old. “I couldn’t understand what was happening to me. I don’t know if I even realized it was Marvin.” “Marvin Gaye left an indelible mark on the world, and honoring his meaningful work and his impact with the newly minted Marvin Gaye Drive ensures his legacy lives on in an important way with his continued presence in Detroit, steps away from the home where he lived and conceptualized the ‘What’s Going On’ album 50 years ago,” Robin Terry, chairperson and CEO of the Motown Museum, said in a statement. “It was incredibly special for us to share this ceremonial moment with members of Marvin’s family, members of our Motown family and the Detroit community. It’s a day we’ll never forget.” Terry read a letter from Gaye’s youngest sister, Zeola Gaye, who wrote, “I’m elated and touched by the love shown to my brother Marvin.” “I’m so honored to see all the support for ‘What’s Going On’ and for the loving man who sacrificed for others,” said Gay. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer named Jan. 20 “What’s Going On Day” earlier this year, and special Marvin Gaye-themed tours were held at the Motown museum in May. Marvin Gaye was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He was nominated for a Grammy Award 12 times and won twice in 1982 for his song, “Sexual Healing.” Gaye took Grammys for best R&B performance by a male, and best R&B instrumental performance for the instrumental version of the song. He died on April 1, 1984, in Los Angeles, when he was fatally shot by his father after intervening in a fight involving his parents. He was a day short of his 45th birthday.

It honors musicians around the world and their contribution towards making everything all that more melodious. The existence of various genres in music does not only indicate variety but it also a reflection of the history and culture from where they have emerged from. History World Music Day was first celebrated in France in 1982. The Minister of Art and Culture, Jack Lange, gave this festival a green light, along with a renowned French composer named Maurice Fleuret. Every year, it is celebrated on the day of the summer solstice, which is June 21. The aim behind this was to bring people out on the streets and enjoy themselves listening to the music, however they like it. Since then, around 120 countries in the world celebrate this incredible day. Significance For many of us, music is an integral part of our lives. Be it being professionally trained or being a self-proclaimed bathroom singer, it does not matter because this is something that we absolutely love. They respond.” - Ray Charles  Warner Bros has landed What’s Going On, a biopic of iconic soul singer Marvin Gaye that Allen Hughes will direct, and produce with Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Andrew Lazar. The studio acquired a script by poet-playwright Marcus Gardley (he wrote the musical The Color Purple for WB) and the singer’s estate and Motown are part of the deal so there will be rights to use all of Gaye’s signature songs. This finally will bring to the screen the singer’s story, after many previous attempts by different filmmakers stalled or fell short of the rights needed.
“This is so personal for me,” Hughes told Deadline. “When I made my first film with my brother, we were fortunate to get “What’s Going On” into the trailer for Menace 2 Society, and it was a game changer in elevating the marketing of that film. Every film of mine but the period film From Hell had some Marvin Gaye in it, and I’ve just always connected to him. He’s the artist’s artist, with this ethereal voice that just comes out of the heavens. There have been plenty of great artists, and then Marvin, in his own lane. When you listen, in one measure you feel like you’ve read a novel. Such a rich inner life in that voice, heavenly but riddled with pain, the agony and ecstasy at the same time. When he gained his independence in the ’70s, with that album What’s Going On, then Trouble Man and Let’s Get It On, I Want You and his final masterpiece Here, My Dear, when it comes to vocal orchestrations and the way he layered his voice, he’s Mozart. You’ve heard of all these big-name directors that have tried for 35 years to consolidate these rights. This started with Dre, saying, ‘Let’s do this together,’ and then Jimmy came on, and Andrew Lazar, and we worked with the estate, with Motown and some other things that needed to be tied down, and we got it done.” Deadline hears the studio will put up the biggest budget ever for an African American music biopic, north of $80 million. The Marvin Gaye estate and Motown are squarely aboard, with the singer’s widow, Jan Gaye, being an executive producer along with Suzanne de Passe. Hughes and the producers immediately will begin the search for the actor to play Gaye. The film is effectively greenlighted for a production start next year, for an event-ized release in 2023 that will encompass Warner Bros theatrical and HBO Max. The intention is not to do a by-the-numbers biopic but rather to create a musical odyssey and theatrical experience around the life of one of America’s greatest singers and musicians. The film will thread the story of his past with events that helped shape his infamous last tour. Not only does it depict the tumultuous relationship he had with his father, it celebrates the life of the women who influenced Gaye’s career and inspired some of the most iconic love songs of all time. The film also affirms how his music was integral to popular culture for three decades running. What’s Going On not only addresses the demons that haunted Marvin, it is a thrilling tribute to an icon whose music changed the world. Gaye’s early career helped shape the Motown sounds of the ’60. He became the first Black singer to sign a million-dollar record deal and then had some of his most influential and politically charged songs when he went solo. The long list of hits includes “Ain’t That Peculiar,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You’re All I Need To Get By,” “Let’s Get It On,” “Sexual Healing” and dozens of other hits he recorded solo and in duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross. He released the seminal ’70s solo albums What’s Going On (which Spike Lee made a prominent part of Da 5 Bloods) and Let’s Get It On. Gaye’s demise was tragic: A day before his 45th birthday in 1984, he was shot dead by his father. Gaye was inducted posthumously into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hughes said he expects to use Gaye’s voice in the depiction of his songs in the film. “Marvin’s voice is so singular that 90% of it has to be the real guy, but hopefully we can find an actor who can tie it up with ligamental scenes, and live stuff where you do a blend,” he said. “But mostly I want to honor that singular voice, and I don’t want to mimic it. But there are techniques I’ve been exploring audio-wise in live performance and recording in the studio. I’ve taken all those multi-tracks apart with Dr. Dre and it has revealed a lot, but we don’t want to play any tricks with what is probably the purest voice of all time.” Hughes has been on a decidedly musical track as a filmmaker. That started with The Defiant Ones, the critically acclaimed series about the unlikely partnership between Dr. Dre and Iovine, and he has upcoming Dear Mama, a five-part FX docuseries on Tupac and Afeni Shakur. Met aanstekelijke energie zetten deze vier heren een uiterst smerige doch onweerstaanbare sound neer. Hun derde album 'Love Me Some' zal tien nieuwe nummers bevatten plus als bonustracks de twee 'coronajaar'-singles 'Howl' & 'Mine All Mine', waarbij Jim Diamond (cfr The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs & The Sonics) aan de knoppen zat.  - 'Van Rolling Heat' tot 'Favorite Scene' - Toen de band begon aan 'Favorite Scene', hadden ze een soort The Rolling Stones meet Canned Heat-sfeertje in gedachten. De werktitel van de song werd dan ook zeer toepasselijk 'Rolling Heat'. Het was een catchy riff van gitarist Patrick die de basis vormde, en al snel werd duidelijk dat hier een kopstem bij hoorde. Zanger Jan slaagde er echter niet in om de juiste lyrics en melodie te vinden, en dus liep de boel een beetje vast. Enkele maanden later, tijdens een residentie van de band in de GAM Studio in Waimes, besloot producer Koenraad het over een andere boeg te gooien. Hij kleedde het nummer helemaal uit tot een zeer dansbare groove met een ietwat Curtis Mayfield-achtige feel. De zangmelodie volgde spontaan, maar op de lyrics bleef het wachten tot enkele dagen voor de finale opnames in Studio Jupiter, in Tongeren. Als finishing touch haalde Koenraad de backing vocals van girl next door Rijkje Crommen er weer bij, en zo werd 'Rolling Heat' uiteindelijk het sensuele 'Favorite Scene'.  Vanaf half juli verrijst er voor het Muziekodroom-gebouw een open air muziekclub. De hele zomervakantie wordt het dé place to be voor concerten en feestjes, of gezellig wat hangen met je maten bij een drankje en veel muziek. In samenwerking met gelijkgestemde partners uit de regio (De Serre, PXL Music, Villa Basta, ..) hebben we een breed muzikaal programma uitgedokterd. Rock, hiphop, electronica, nightlife en vooral veel opkomend talent. In Het Zomerkwartier vind je het allemaal!
Na meer dan een jaar quarantaine komt eindelijk terug de vrijheid in zicht. En da's geen moment te vroeg: iedereen is hongerig naar feestjes en live muziek. Dat is precies wat je in Het Zomerkwartier kan komen beleven. In samenwerking met onze partner Pukkelpop bouwen we een volledig uitgeruste en professionele concertzaal in open lucht, recht voor onze club. Naast onze eigen programmatie worden er events gecureerd door verschillende spelers uit de Limburgse muziekscene. We serveren dit alles in een mini-festival setting voor 200 tot 700 bezoekers in juli, met mogelijke versoepelingen in augustus breiden we uit tot 1000 bezoekers. Op 7 juli trappen we af met een grote klepper (meer nieuws volgt snel)! Vanaf donderdag 15 juli is Het Zomerkwartier elk weekend dé plek voor concerten, nightlife en vooral heel veel muzikale good vibes - en dat 8 weken lang! Net zoals bij hun Studio Brussel programma Boitlyfe draait het om drie dingen: lekkere schijfkes, goede zever en helemaal chaud worden! Alsof deze tsunami van beats nog niet voldoende zou zijn, kondigen we binnenkort nog twee namen aan voor deze party dag! Factory of Sweetness is de kleinere broer van Suikerrock, maar even groot in sfeer, gezelligheid en beleving. De naam dekt de lading volledig, want het evenement vindt plaats aan het T-center van de Tiense Suikerraffinaderij, net buiten het centrum van Tienen. Met de skyline van de fabrieksgebouwen als decor en een uitermate gezellige inkleding, is dit afgesloten privé terrein met zijn 185 jaar geschiedenis ideaal om drie dagen te genieten van ‘het feest van de bevrijding’! ALISO VIEJO (15 June 2021): Guitarists Blake Aaron and Adam Hawley wrote “Sunday Strut” for Aaron’s “Color and Passion” album while in the throes of the coronavirus quarantine and now that things are reopening, the hard-charging, high-energy contemporary jazz instrumental tops four singles charts simultaneously. The horn-powered track featuring urban-jazz icon Najee and produced by Hawley is No. 1 on the Billboard, Mediabase, Smooth Jazz Network and SmoothJazz.com charts. It’s the third single to go No. 1 on the Billboard chart from the Innervision Records release that dropped last September, following “Groovers and Shakers” and “Fall For You.” Much of “Color and Passion” was written and recorded last year while Aaron was unable to tour due to COVID-19 restrictions, so he used the time productively to produce projects for other artists and to finish his sixth album, which continues to be a celebrated release. “2020 was a tough year, and incredibly tough for some of us. AB viert op 18 juni 2022 de (uitgestelde) 40ste verjaardag van haar favoriete herrie- en stilte-adepten: Einstürzende Neubauten. Het concert was in een mum van tijd uitverkocht en daarom kondigt de band rond Blixa Bargeld een extra show aan op maandag 20 juni 2022. Einstürzende Neubauten zijn inmiddels meer dan 40 jaar leveranciers van succulent muzikaal schrootlawaai. Taking inspiration from jazz, soul and funk, Ungodly War is a dynamic track recorded some 50+ years ago in Louisville, Kentucky. “People have always loved that track (Ungodly War), people would always want to talk to me about it and you know it’s more relevant now than ever before…it’s stood the test of time” Lamont Butler. For this release we wanted to try something a little different and so, for the first time on Miles Away, we’ve enlisted the help of a musician to add a little somethin’ somethin’. Someone who has spent a lifetime hoarding, editing and compiling rare soul and disco records. There was really only one person at the top of our list and he goes by the name Al Kent. Al’s sound is big and his edit flows from the off, allowing everything we love about the original to shine through perhaps even more brightly than before. With a little beefiness added to the drums and a subtle restructuring in parts, the result is an exemplary 7” bullet ready for the dancefloor. This new video & digital single is an appetizer for the upcoming album by incomparable French avant-pop band Aquaserge. Un grand sommeil noir is the band’s interpretation of one of the rare songs by revered composer Edgard Varèse, who set a poem by Paul Verlaine to music, in 1906. When he wrote this tonal, post-romantic piece, Varèse was 23 and was still influenced by his then-contemporaries Debussy, Ravel and Satie. He had barely started the journey which, from the 1920s on, led him to revolutionise contemporary classical music (and, much later on, to become Frank Zappa’s role model…) As for Aquaserge’s new album, it’s a very special project in which the band set themselves quite a challenge: drawing inspiration from four major, atypical figures in contemporary classical music from the mid-20th century (Ligeti, Scelsi, Varèse and Morton Feldman), in order to write & record an album which joyfully blurs boundaries between rock and what used to be called ‘serious music’. Entitled The Possibility of a New Work for Aquaserge (the title is inspired by that of a Morton Feldman piece), the album will be released on October 15, as part of Made To Measure, Crammed Discs’ celebrated composers’ series, which is being reactivated in 2021 after a long slumber. The Possibility of a New Work for Aquaserge is also the title of a music theatre show, which Aquaserge will be performing in several European cities, a.o. as part of open-minded contemporary music festival such as Art Musica (Brussels) and Aujourd’hui Musiques (Perpignan). Judging by their previous albums, it appears that Aquaserge’s music is “densely packed with ideas, boldly anarchic about ignoring borders and boundaries of every kind, and dazzling with joyful weirdness” (The Wire, UK), and “playful, seductive, and joyous” (All Music Guide, US). Prominent figures from the world of jazz have been paying their respects, while a statement issued by his family on social media states: “With great pain, the family communicates the death of Raul de Souza, tonight, in France. Guerreiro, as always, fought until the end of his forces against cancer. Our Brazilian hero left for eternity, leaving for everyone his greatest legacy, his music. We are immensely grateful for the support that all of you have always shown.” João José Pereira de Souza was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1934, began playing while still in his teens and adopted the artistic name Raul. His first album recording was in 1957 as a member of the nine piece group Turma da Gafieira, where his talent stood out. He soon began playing with renowned musicians such as Sérgio Mendes, with whom he recorded and toured internationally in the ‘60s as a member of the group Bossa Rio. He also recorded with the likes of Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento and Flora Purim, while a period living in Los Angeles in the ’70s saw collaborations with stars the included Cannonball Adderley, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius. He also worked with George Duke, who produced his 1977 hit ‘Sweet Lucy’. De Souza relocated to France in the late ’90s and in recent years had been leader of a much younger crop of musicians that developed its own infectious blend of Funk with traditional and contemporary Brazilian Jazz and also incorporated the beautiful sound of a two trombone front line. As Raul de Souza Generations Band, the quintet has just released its first album, ‘Plenitude’. Recorded while the group were living together for several weeks while on tour just before the pandemic, the record consists of contemporary arrangements of de Souza’s early funk successes such as ‘Sweet Lucy’ and ‘Daisy Mae’, collaborations with old friends of his such as Chico Buarque's ‘Apesar de Você’, plus brand new compositions. NEW YORK (9 June 2021): Jazz history was forged in the rustic Black Forest of Germany in 1968 when Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer launched MPS Records and recorded some of the genre’s seminal artists. Legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, The Count Basie Orchestra and George Duke released albums on the prestigious label known for its high-level recording technique and distinctive aesthetic. Much of MPS’s catalog will be reissued in the United States over the coming months thanks to a distribution pack with Germany’s Edel and New York City’s Bob Frank Entertainment. The first titles to hit, Fitzgerald’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” and Hubbard’s “The Hub of Hubbard,” are dropping June 16 as limited-edition vinyl LPs exclusively through Vinyl Me, Please. “It is very exciting to see a renewed interest for the MPS label in North America. As Germany’s first jazz label, MPS played a crucial role in jazz history even though both the label and the studio were based in a small town in Germany´s Black Forest region. Says Dario, “The message is to find yourself not just as an artist but a human being. Through all the craziness in the world I had to keep reminding myself that after the Dark Ages came the Renaissance, I really think that will happen. After his mom took him to see the Beatles at an outdoor concert, he was profoundly influenced and became infatuated with becoming a musician. Fast forward to his teenage years and music became a reality when he purchased his first guitar. Dario took an unusual approach. When most musicians were aspiring to play covers, Dario was immediately drawn to writing original music and spent time learning multi-track recording. After graduating Berklee College of Music, Dario toured with his band, Decoy and worked as a session guitarist, touring and teaching. His instructional book, “The Shapes Remain the Same” was published in 2010. After his Decoy project came to a close, Dario went solo, starting a new band he named Dario and the Clear. Dario and the Clear has released five albums since 2011. Eerbetoon aan Ennio Morricone In juli 2020 overleed een van de meest legendarische componisten die de filmwereld gekend heeft: Ennio Morricone. De soundtracks die Morricone componeerde voor films als "Once Upon a Time in the West", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" en "Cinema Paradiso" werden net zo legendarisch als die films zelf. Als geen ander wist Morricone de onuitgesproken sfeer van een film in klanken te vatten. Waarbij hij er tijdens zijn carrière, die meer dan 60 jaar en 400 scores omspande, telkens in slaagde zichzelf opnieuw uit te vinden. Zijn werk voor de westerns van Sergio Leone werd bepalend voor de klank van het Wilde Westen. Muziek uit deze films, en vele andere, hoort u tijdens The Legend of Morricone.
