![]() Taumei “Big John” Akapo is a presence in Hawaii, not just in his physical stature, but in the commanding nature of his soulful blues voice and ringing guitar playing that have enthralled residents and visitors to the Islands for decades. With the release of his debut CD, Paradise Blues, on October 19 from Mensch House Records, listeners from around the globe will get to experience what all the excitement is about. Produced by Akapo, the 10 tracks on his new disc include seven originals, as well as his own unique take on songs from some of his mentors, such as Robert Johnson (“Ramblin’ on My Mind”), Muddy Waters (“I Can’t Be Satisfied”) and Tommy Johnson (“Big Road Blues”). John Akapo is a nomad who followed the music: from his early days as a kid growing up in Alaska, where he fell in love with the guitar, to his youth spent in American Samoa singing acapella and learning how to loop, John Akapo has been magnetically connected to a path of musical discovery. John's family heritage runs deep into the music. As a kid, John was constantly surrounded by music and his uncles were touring musicians who played guitar. His parents had watched family members succumb to addiction from the rock-and-roll lifestyle, so they did their best to keep John and his brothers away from the same pitfalls. “My parents were firmly against the idea of me taking up the guitar,” John says. “I would have to hide my interest in singing and especially playing the guitar. I looked to my brother's friend for guitar lessons and quietly dove into a wormhole of music that I have never climbed back out of. I would learn to play songs from watching VHS tapes or whatever I could get my hands on. That was how I discovered Eric Clapton performing his MTV Unplugged set and my whole world changed. I was still too young to have known who he was or that he was even part of the British revival of the Blues. All I knew was I wanted more.” John immersed himself into the origins of the blues and never looked back. Taking a cue from the legends like Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, and B.B. King, he began to explore and absorb as much as he could from recordings, movies, books and magazines. Blues had become his solace. Recording his own original works, John began a professional career as a luau musician, bandleader, solo entertainer, and more recently, a hip-hop producer and vocalist for 13 years. When he sits down to write music, he always ends up with a blues song. It's only fitting that he has finally decided to release his first album, Paradise Blues, as a blues artist bringing him right back home. “I think my music is like a tree rooted in traditional blues but sprinkled with Pacific salt water,” John explains. “I’m merely telling a story of where I’m from, and how I got here, set to a mellow acoustic blues soundtrack. I play the blues because it feels familiar to me. I feel a connection to the story behind the blues and I’m just trying to continue the story from another perspective. Give me a try and see if I can’t make you feel good about being blue.” Akapo's eclectic style has won over fans across the globe, including the likes of comedians J. Anthony Brown and Russell Peters, who sang John's praises on his Instagram feed. On his musical journey, John Akapo never turned his back on his Samoan heritage or his Hawaiian roots, and his experiences on the Islands have helped shape him as a person, as well as a guitarist. John embodies the spirit, beauty, sadness, and struggle of the Islands with every guitar lick. “The blues fans that have seen me play, appreciate the fact that I’m from Hawaii, yet I make them feel like they’re at home in the mainland,” he summarizes. “The blues is at home here in the Islands, and it’s nothing new. Epic-aggressive, mystical-melodic – that’s the sound of Bad Butler. The metallers vocally work foremost with high-contrast growl, melodious harmonies and powerful vocals. Energetic guitar riffing with catchy tunes and a driving rhythm complete the total package.
Bad Butler manages to build a unique mystic-dynamic sound atmosphere which carries you away and gets under your skin. In their songs they deal with apocalyptic scenarios. They describe the horror, evil and the devil. In that historical-political events play as much a role as the seven deadly sins or classics by Steven King. The sophisticated sound is brought on stage with a lot of power, passion, and much blood, sweat and tears with Bad Butler’s year-long experience in other famous bands. The project Bad Butler was founded in 2013. The two well attuned guitarists Christian Lautemann and Gary Bonassi start to write songs together. It soon becomes clear that young and willing men are needed to present the works. Since the beginning of 2016 the rhythmical foundation is set with drummer Thomas Diener and bass player Christian Junker. Last but not least Dominik Kockler joins the group as frontman and vocalist. The first album ‘Not Bad at All’ was released in August 2017 recorded by the group in an in-house production. As Pit Schneider aptly put it: the debut is ‘hard, fast and luscious, but still melodic’. The title developed over the years of the band’s formation. Every time after writing texts, the first instrumental recordings, and the spontaneous vocal backings, these entirely humble words were uttered. The music video to the first single ‘Nameless Thing’ registered over 5.500 views after a few weeks. Frontman Andy Cairns: " ‘Cleave’, is voor mij, therapy? op ons meest gefocust. Ik hou van onze meer experimentele kant, maar ik vind het ook geweldig dat deze plaat klinkt alsof ze gemaakt is door een band die allemaal vanuit hetzelfde script aan het lezen is en met dezelfde vastberadenheid en honger vooruitgaat. De manier waarop ik ‘Cleave’ heb beschreven aan mensen die hebben gevraagd, is dat het een beetje zoals Nurse and Pleasure Death-era ontmoet Troublegum, maar dan met een volledig moderne productie van de 21e eeuw. " De productie van ‘Cleave’ was in handen van oudgediende Chris Sheldon, die al eerder met de band werkte voor ‘Troublegum’ (1994), ‘Semi-Detached’ (1998) en ‘High Anxiety’ (2003). Andy: "We weten dat we Chris kunnen vertrouwen. Hij heeft een geweldige geschiedenis met de band en een vrije agenda. Het is niet alsof hij singles wil maken, maar hij wil ook dat de band maximaal kan presteren, en hij is erg goed in het aanwijzen van problemen zonder je te beledigen! In de pre-productie hebben we veel van de nummers ingekort en direct ter zake genomen. Je kunt in je eigen kleine bubbel stappen als je songs schrijft, dus het is geweldig om iemand objectief te laten zijn en je uitdagen om dingen opnieuw te bedenken. " Therapy? 1989-2018 In 1989 opgericht in Noord-Ierland bleken gevoelens van vervreemding, frustratie en ontwrichting voor Therapy? een uitstekende inspiratiebron. Het gevoel van achterdocht en verwarring dat deze eigenwijze band als buitenstaander en eeuwige underdog sinds het begin van zijn carrière voelde en verwoordde in zijn muziek, songteksten en video’s sluit nog immer bij de huidige tijdsgeest aan. Gecombineerd met een inktzwart en idosyncratisch wereldbeeld kreeg Therapy? de reputatie van één van de meest eigenwijze, compromisloze, creatieve en onafhankelijke bands van zijn generatie. A track-by-track guide to Cleave, by Andy Cairns Wreck It Like Beckett This song originated with Michael. He told me he had a riff which reminded him of She Watch Channel Zero by Public Enemy and he sent me over a bass riff, a guitar riff and a drum beat. I thought the riff was incredible, and so we chopped it up in the rehearsal room, to make it more stop-start, like [classic Therapy? tracks] Knives or Screamager, and that really worked. Lyrically, it’s about trying to start anew. The reason that [Irish playwright and poet] Samuel Beckett is referenced in the title is that each time Beckett began a new project he used to imagine that he was sitting at a desk and could swipe his arm across the desk to clear away all the sheets of paper so that he could make a fresh start. This is a song that sets the album up as a new chapter for Therapy? Kakistocracy Michael actually sent me this riff too. It was mid-paced, with a heavy groove, a bit like Helmet. We’ve had a song idea kicking around for a while based around the line ‘It’s okay not to be okay’ and when we got this riff it was such a great head-nodder that it reminded us of something like Unbeliever from Troublegum, with that same kind of chunky riff. Lyrically, it’s about division again, the division between the haves and the have-nots. There’s an awful lot of anger and frustration out there right now, and you look at this wealthy country and how it treats people, and so this song is kinda saying ‘You’ve got a right to be pissed off.’ People in our country don’t kick off against injustice enough… Callow Callow is one of two songs on the album that I wrote start-to-finish. Everyone who knows anything about our band know that I love Hüsker Dü and The Buzzcocks and Ramones, and this is another melodic punky song in the vein of Nowhere and Screamager and Lonely, Cryin’, Only, with maybe a hint of the Manic Street Preachers The Holy Bible too. My son Jonah is really into a rapper called Lil Peep, which sounds to me like emo with trap drum beats, with lyrics about fucked up and lost and lonely he feels, and I managed to get Jonah a ticket for his show in London last year. A few months later he said to me, ‘Lil Peep is dead’, and I could see that he was really affected by it: I realised that, for him, this was like the passing of John Lennon or Ian Curtis or Kurt Cobain. In some of his music, Lil Peep talked about the antidepressant Xanax, the over-use of which has become a real problem in the UK, and while I was thinking about that I remembered a Stephen Fry quote where, after he was prescribed antidepressants to combat his manic depression, and he said that he felt like a zombie for months. He said something like, ‘If you take away my demons, you’ll also take my angels.’ His point was that, yes, there were dizzying heights and terrifying lows without antidepressants, but he’d rather have that than constant numbness. So this song is talking about how we negotiate the chaos of life right now, and to understand why someone might numb out so that they don’t notice our divides. Expelled This was co-written by Michael and I. Michael had an idea which was reminiscent of Killing Joke and I added some Black Flag descending chords to it. Going back to something I touched on earlier, this is a song about class division. There’s a line ‘I wasn’t born pretty, I wasn’t born rich, everything I’ve got I’ve had to fight for’, which references the idea of one’s environment and background and upbringing, and how depressing it is that people currently seem really determined to divide the country into categories of people. I’m living out my inner John Lydon a little with the vocals here. Success Success Is Survival This reminds me of something like Perversonality from Nurse, it’s a big, stomping tune, with a bassline from Michael and my chorus. The idea behind the lyric started with Leonard Cohen. I was watching a Leonard Cohen documentary and someone was speaking to him backstage somewhere in 1977/’78 and asked him, ‘How do you define success?’ His answer was, ‘Well, for me, success is survival’. This is probably the most overtly political song on the record, without explicitly naming and shaming anyone. My wife works for a charitable organisation and she works a lot with the homeless, and so I see first-hand what she has to deal with. Just trying to survive now seems even harder now than it used to be. The opening line paraphrases Samuel Beckett, where he said, ‘The cream of this country, rich and thick.’ Save Me From The Ordinary This originated with a bass and drums line that Michael wrote. He wasn’t sure that it was something I would like, or something that we would do, but once Neil played drums on it, it made sense. Its initial title was Quotidian. Lyrically the idea came from watching Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin, which is a great film, about a little man getting caught in the cogs of a machine. Beckett was always enthralled by Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin films because he saw a lot of sadness in man’s pathetic attempts to wriggle free of troubled situations and there’s something of that pathos here. Crutch This is the second track on the record that I wrote from start-to-finish, in this instance on an acoustic guitar, sitting at my kitchen table. While thinking about duality in personalities, I thought about how much certain people change when they add alcohol, and so this is about alcohol addiction. It’s not pointing fingers: with any big major fuck up that I’ve made in my life or any seriously rash decisions I’ve made that I’ve come to regret, alcohol was always involved. The melody line here is almost like a country song, with an element of our song Die Laughing too. I Stand Alone We had this riff which was kinda …And Justice For All-era Metallica-meets-The Young Gods but we just couldn’t get it to sound like Therapy? And then Neil suggested we try it with a similar approach to how we wrote Skinning Pit or Fantasy Bag on Pleasure Death and that seemed to work. The verses remind me a little of Nine Inch Nails. Lyrically it is inspired by Gaspar Noé’s movie Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) which is a brilliant film about a middle-aged butcher in Paris who has the ultimate mid-life crisis, completely melts down and goes on the rampage. Dumb Down The music here is 100 per cent Mr Cooper. Neil bought himself some sampling gear and keyboards and music software and he sent me a piece of music which had him drumming and playing the bass and guitar parts on a synthesizer. It sounded like a bizarre but brilliant Daft Punk track, with a really great riff. Because it was played on a keyboard we spent ages trying to transpose it to the right key so that we could play it, but we copied Neil’s synth parts on the bass and guitar and then I added the lyrics later on. The lyrics were inspired by a conversation I had at a dinner party immediately post-Brexit. My neighbor was hosting this party and at some point the conversation, inevitably, turned to Brexit and I said that I disagreed with it. This middle class, middle-aged man said, ‘Well, if you don’t like it, you can always go home.’ I looked at him and said, ‘What, next door?’ That kinda summed up Brexit to me, that this guy actually felt empowered to say something like that now. No Sunshine I think this is my favourite track on the album. Michael wrote the verses and pre-chorus, and I wrote the chorus. Initially this sounded like Portishead, with a very slow trip-hop beat and what sounded like a double bass playing a descending line, but Neil thought it was missing something, so then we added an almost black metal pre-chorus. Then I wanted to add a huge chorus that would lift the song right up. Lyrically, this song is completely autobiographical: I’m prone to depression at times and having talked about other people’s depression on Callow, this is a more personal take on it, where I tried to think of how I feel when I’m really, really down and make the lyrics as frank as possible. Hij schreef zijn eerste songs op z’n elfde, was op z’n zeventiende reeds buskend on the road en zocht en vond een publiek in de straten van Londen tot Barcelona, van Amsterdam tot Rome, zelfs de oversteek wagend en tevens naar Australië en Canada trok. Hij werd op jonge leeftijd onder hoede genomen door een voormalig EMI UK manager, wat resulteerde tot een eerste album en scoort hoog in de finale van de Internationale Imagine wedstrijd in 2015 waar hij o.m. de Sabam prijs wegkaapt. Dat meldt de VRT. Visterin raakte vooral bekend met de hit ‘De vogel’ uit 1970. Tim Visterin speelde aanvankelijk als muzikant in de jazzgroep The Jokers en de rockgroep Roland et les Bémols, maar hij werd vooral bekend met zijn lied De vogel. Dat was een bewerking van het Franse nummer Dites-moi, Monsieur van Jean-Claude Darnal, die in Vlaanderen een gigantische hit werd. Het nummer, over een jongen die aan tovenaar Merlijn sterke vleugels vraagt om een mooie vogel te worden, werd opgenomen met het Mechelse Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-knapenkoor (met onder meer een jonge Frank Deboosere, Eric Melaerts en Pat Donnez) en ging meer dan 100.000 keer over de toonbank. It echoes from the magnolia groves and bayous of his Louisiana childhood, and looms into the present every time he unleashes the molasses and tanned-leather combination of his guitar and voice. The legendary songwriter’s new blues-based album, Bad Mouthin’, which arrives September 28, comes straight from the swamps with its blend of classics and five White originals, including two of the first songs he wrote — just before penning his breakthrough hits “Polk Salad Annie” and “A Rainy Night in Georgia” in 1967. “When and where I grew up, blues was just about the only music I heard and truly loved,” says White, who’s 75 and, if anything, an even more visceral performer than in his youth. “I’ve always thought of myself as a blues musician, bottom line, because the blues is real, and I like to keep everything I do as real as it gets. So, I thought it was time to make a blues record that sounds the way I always loved the music.” And that’s down-to-the-bone raw. Over the course of Bad Mouthin’ ’s 12 songs, White conjures a world of meaning that transcends the lyrics of classics like Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man,” Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Awful Dreams,” and Charley Patton’s “Down the Dirt Road Blues,” using his deep river of a voice and the dark, spartan tones of his guitar to evoke the mystical South — a place where ghosts roam among abandoned pecan groves covered in Spanish moss and, indeed, the Devil might be encountered at a moonlit crossroads. That White — who has written hits and cuts for a compendium of fellow legends from Elvis Presley (“Poke Salad Annie”) to Brook Benton (“A Rainy Night in Georgia”) to Dusty Springfield (“Willie and Laura Mae Jones”) to Eric Clapton (“Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You”) to Tina Tuner (“Steamy Windows”) to Willie Nelson (“Problem Child”) to Kenny Chesney (also “Steamy Windows”) to Robert Cray (who recorded White’s “Don’t Steal My Love” and “Aspen, Colorado” just last year) — would now craft a blues album after more than 50 years spanning the rock, country, R&B, and Americana genres is an incredible testament to his versatility as well as to his roots. Mostly, Bad Mouthin’ features White accompanied solely by his road-worn 1965 Fender Stratocaster, the guitar he’s favored for his entire career. That’s all he needs to conjure the same kind of simmering emotional magic that John Lee Hooker distilled into his historic solo recordings — just one man and one guitar essentially defining what it means to be human in a story as simple and yet as profound as a Zen koan. Five Bad Mouthin’ stories, “Stockholm Blues,” “Rich Woman Blues,” “Cool Town Woman,” “Sundown Blues” and the title track, are plucked from his own past. In “Bad Mouthin’,” about an abusive lover, White’s voice rings with the weariness of a man pushed to his limits. And in “Sundown Blues,” his spare lyrics capture the essence of a lonely heart over a slow smoky shuffle reminiscent of Hooker’s famed lowdown boogie beat. On both of those tunes — which are early, rediscovered compositions that White first recorded for a local label in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1966 — and two others, drummer Bryan Owings backs White. Owings is White’s frequent accompanist on tour, in the two-man band format that White enjoys. Owings has also performed and recorded with Emmylou Harris, Justin Townes Earle, Wanda Jackson, and many others. Bassist Steve Forrest joins the duo on two numbers. The album was produced by Jody White and engineered by Ryan McFadden. Their recording strategy was unconventional. White moved a hodgepodge of gear from his home to his barn, where two former horse stalls became their studio. “The cement-floor saddle room with unfinished wood paneling had a window unit air conditioning box that had to be turned off for recording,” says McFadden. “The next stall over had a dirt floor covered with glued composite board. Tony cancelled the first session, saying he couldn’t sing in there because of the chemical smell of the glue. When I went back, Tony had filled the stalls with bowls of coffee grounds, cups of rice, dryer sheets, and decorative brooms made of bound twigs that were drenched in a cinnamon scent, sold at grocery stores around Halloween.” After that, each song was cut live in one or two takes. The approach perfectly captured the laidback open sound and sliding chords with thumb-plucked low-string lines that defines White’s blues-drenched guitar style. Since White plays good and loud, they put his 1951 Fender Deluxe amplifier in the back of his Land Rover, so its bawling tones wouldn’t interfere with the vocals and percussion tracks. White, who was born in 1943 as the youngest of seven children on a cotton farm about 20 miles from the nearest town, Oak Grove, Louisiana, says the foundation of his music “comes from hearing blues singers play guitar with maybe just a harmonica or stomping their feet for accompaniment.” Adding a drummer, he cut his teeth playing school dances and then moved on to nightclubs along the Texas and Louisiana “crawfish circuit” of rough and tumble watering holes. And then the hits started happening, with “Polk Salad Annie” reaching number eight on the pop charts in 1968. Two years later, Brook Benton’s recording of “A Rainy Night in Georgia” topped the soul charts, and it’s been a wild ride since: decades of touring and recording marked by hit songs and collaborations with the likes of Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis and Mark Knopfler. “If there’s anything like a line connecting everything that I’ve done, I would say it’s realness,” says White. “Even my songs that are sweet little love ballads —those are all real, inspired by real love and real life. Over the course of a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, Turre has proved time and time again that he’s one of the foremost masters of the trombone, able to steer his challenging instrument through breakneck turns and imaginative leaps at dizzying speed. On The Very Thought Of You, Turre shows off a less celebrated side of his brilliant artistry: his moving, heartfelt way with a ballad. Luxuriating in timeless melodies and swathed in lush strings, Turre makes his horn sing with delicate lyricism and subtle beauty. Of course, the irrepressible trombonist can’t help but unleash his fiercely swinging side, peppering his ballad set with a few pulse-quickeners here and there. Available now on Smoke Sessions Records, The Very Thought Of You features a stellar quartet ideal for a session that calls for a light touch combined with the soul-stirring depth of feeling that Turre brings to everything that he plays. Turre is joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Willie Jones III, supplemented on four of the pieces by a string octet conducted by veteran arranger Marty Sheller. An outstanding pair of guests, legendary tenor saxophonist George Coleman and guitar great Russell Malone, both lend their breathtaking mastery to the music as well. “There’s a challenge to playing ballads on any instrument,” Turre admits. “It’s not about showing off; it’s about trying to play beautiful, to touch somebody with your sound and with your phrasing. The reason I wanted to do it is because I’ve never done it before. I’ve done so many records where I play fast and complicated. It was time to play ballads.” Especially on the four immortal classics to which Sheller added strings – “Never Let Me Go,” “Shadow of Your Smile,” “Danny Boy,” and the title track – Turre likened his role to that of a singer, ceding the solo spotlight to his bandmates while focusing his own playing on the interpretation of the songs’ incredible melodies. “I don’t know anybody on the trombone that can play faster than Curtis Fuller could,” Turre explains. “But when I first came to New York in 1973, I met Curtis and he told me that the hardest thing to do is to play simple and have it mean something. So my role wasn't as the improviser; I was the singer, and my focus was to make the melody say something without over-embellishing it.” It was some of the music’s most renowned vocalists that inspired Turre’s choice of standards on The Very Thought Of You. Nancy Wilson’s versions of the title tune and “Never Let Me Go” convinced the trombonist that he wanted to take on those melodies, while a live rendition of “The Shadow of Your Smile” so captivated him that he added it to the setlist. “Carmen McRae sang nothing but the melody and it was so astounding,” Turre recalls. The Very Thought of You is not the first time that Turre has melded his voice with strings. On Lotus Flower (1999), he led a sextet where the frontline swapped sax and trumpet for Akua Dixon’s cello and Regina Carter’s violin. And on his 1997 self-titled album he teamed with Sheller – a longtime colleague on the Latin jazz scene – for a string arrangement of the Machito classic “Ayer Lo Vi Llorar” featuring the iconic Afro-Cuban singer Graciela. But the new album marks the first time that Turre has utilized strings in the traditional vein of classics like Clifford Brown with Strings or Nat King Cole’s elegant sound. “With ballads, it’s not about playing loud and boisterous, it’s about playing with subtlety,” Turre says. “The strings help to bring that out. Plus, Marty Sheller’s writing was just sublime, so tasteful and lush and not overdone but complimentary to a T.” After opening the album with a swooning “The Very Thought of You,” the band is joined by Malone for the first time on an up-tempo but laid-back romp through “September in the Rain.” Then Turre and Malone pair off for the trombonist’s intimate duet piece “No Regrets.” The song was originally written back in the ‘70s while Turre was playing bass in drummer Chico Hamilton’s band, where once a night the leader would take a break and leave Turre to play duo with guitarist Rodney Jones. On “Freedom Park, SA” Turre and Jones go head to head with a free improv sparked by a melody conceived by Turre while playing a festival in South Africa last year. Turre contributes his own ballad to the proceedings with the wistful “Time Will Tell,” then nods to his late mentor J.J. Johnson (as well as his wife) on the trombone giant’s touching “Carolyn in the Morning.” Coleman’s heart-wrenching solo on “Never Let Me Go” is a highlight of the album, but Turre welcomes him back to let loose on a rip-roaring take on Charlie Parker’s “Yardbird Suite.” The album concludes on a poignant note with the sentimental Irish ballad “Danny Boy,” a particularly meaningful choice for Turre. He fell in love with the song through Ben Webster’s version, but never played it until his brother-in-law, frail but still alert at 100 -years-old, made the request. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, Turre’s gentle but jaunty “Sachiko” is named for a baby whose smile touched his heart during a chance encounter in San Francisco. There are countless musical moments that might come to mind at the thought of Steve Turre: his formative stint with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, his innovative collaborations with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, his tenures on the road with Ray Charles or Woody Shaw, his decades as a member of the Saturday Night Live band, his ground-breaking use of conch shells as musical instruments, countless collaborations with the greatest artists in jazz and popular music. King belandde in 1972 bij de gitaarrockband om daar Leon Wilkinson op bas te vervangen. Maar hij schakelde over naar gitaar waardoor de Southern Rockband ook live de voor de kenmerkende drie gitaarpartijen kon brengen. De gitarist tekende aldus mee voor de bekendste nummers van Lynyrd Skynyrd: 'Sweet Home Alabama', dat hij meeschreef, en het epische 'Free Bird'. In 1975 verliet King de groep. In 1987 keerde hij terug, maar vanwege problemen aan het hart ging Lynyrd Skynyrd vanaf 1996 zonder hem verder. Ed King was ook stichtend lid van de psychedelische rockband Alarm Clock. Die werd in 1967 bekend met 'Incense and Peppermints'. De musicus is woensdag in zijn woning in Nashville overleden.

Northward Pre-order the new album "Northward" via this link: http://nblast.de/NWNorthward It was during the 'All Star Jam' at Progpower USA Festival in 2007, when current NIGHTWISH singer Floor Jansen and PAGAN'S MIND guitarist Jorn Viggo Lofstad spontaneously joined forces on stage for some cover songs and noticed the creative magic between them. Although the two musicians had never met before, they soon discovered their mutual love for stripped down hard rock and decided to write some songs together. In 2008 still barely knowing each other, they composed an entire album's worth of material in next to no time. But due to their tight schedules with their main bands, their new project named NORTHWARD never found its way into the spotlight - until this day! In 2017, the year of NIGHTWISH's break, Floor took the opportunity to contact her old friend Jorn Viggo again, to see if he was still interested in resurrecting NORTHWARD - and of course he was! "Jørn Viggo was positive about the project and we started to make the overall plans, meeting again in March of 2017 in Sweden to go through all the material together to see if we still felt happy with what we had created", remembers Floor Jansen. Stepping free from all boundaries NORTHWARD's sound is strong, euphoric and straight in the tradition of SKUNK ANANSIE, FOO FIGHTERS and ALTER BRIDGE but also older bands such as DEEP PURPLE and LED ZEPPELIN, the Music comes straight to the point and makes no compromises. With the help of producer Jacob Hansen (VOLBEAT etc.), who mixed the record, they forged a raw diamond composed of heavy riffs and Floor's incomparable voice, free from influences of the musicians' main bands. And although the songs had originally been written in 2008, they just felt as fresh and alive upon a second hearing, as they had on the very first day of their creation. "The music is melodic, but also in your face and kick ass rock. Cool riffs, good melodies, tasteful arrangements. We would simply like to call it 'Good Music'", commented the singer and adds: "We wanted to explore a stripped down sound, with drums, bass, guitar and vocals. Not the heavy layers of keyboards, choirs etc.". Alongside Floor Jansen and Jorn Viggo Lofstad, Morty Black (TNT) handled bass duties, while drums were handled by Jango Nilsen and Stian Kristoffersen (PAGAN'S MIND). You will also hear a guest appearance by Floor's sister Irene Jansen, singing a duet on the song ’Drifting Islands‘. And finally, Ronny Tegner from PAGAN'S MIND played the piano on one song. This year, NORTHWARD is ready to break free. Floor Jansen states: "We are happy and exited to be able to release this rock album under Nuclear Blast’s name. They accepted the challenge of bringing this non metal album into the world by believing in us as musicians, and also for the pure love for music that sounds good to them. Muziekicoon David Crosby, bekend van The Byrds en supergroep Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, mag daar niet aan ontbreken en sluit op zaterdag 8 september de zomer van OLT Rivierenhof af. De carrière van David Crosby is ongeëvenaard: al zes decennia lang is de Californische muzikant actief. Eerst als een van de oprichters van The Byrds in het midden van de jaren '60, vervolgens als lid van Crosby, Stills & Nash én Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Maar de laatste decennia doet hij het ook als soloartiest. Halverwege de jaren '70 had de man al een bijzonder palmares opgebouwd, met een indrukwekkende reeks platen, waarop minstens een handvol klassiekers staan. De folkrockpionier werd in 2009 dan ook terecht opgenomen in de prestigieuze Songwriters Hall of Fame, maar wil van geen ophouden weten. De laatste jaren bracht de 76-jarige Crosby heel wat nieuwe muziek uit, zoals het prachtige Croz (2014), het minimalistische Lighthouse (2016) en vorig jaar verscheen met Sky Trails een meer jazzy album van zijn hand. Maar bovenal blijft muziekicoon David Crosby een gerespecteerd muzikant en lichtend voorbeeld voor een nieuwe generatie folk-, rock- en jazzmuzikanten zoals Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, The National, Bon Iver en Sufjan Stevens.
