Op vrijdag nodigt Mauro de schaamteloze Runa Svetlikova en de onvoorspelbare Delphine Lecompte uit. Hun gedichten stuwen je op de smerige riffs van Mauro naar een godlasterend poëtisch hoogtepunt. Twee dichterlijke universums en een muzikale draad vinden elkaar, botsen, raken  compromisloos in de war.
Runa Svetlikova bracht in 2014 haar debuut uit ‘Deze zachte witte kamer’ en kreeg promt de Herman De Coninck-debuutprijs en alle lof. In 2018 verscheen ‘Drieëntwintig tips om de hond en je demonen aan de lijn te houden’, een fascinerende weerslag van een leven dat overhoop ligt. Op het podium swingt en bezweert ze en grijpt ze je steevast bij de lurven.
Delphine Lecompte publiceerde al een tiental met lof overladen bundels en verzamelde ook enkele prijzen. In haar gedichten bevrijdt ze zich van haar opvoeding en haar onorthodoxe adolescentie. Een ontwapende verademing op het podium, met soms een deuk van het lachen. Ze deelt brutale shots uit en zorgt ervoor dat een literaire avond meer neigt naar een rockconcert. Daarvoor zijn Mauro & Runa natuurlijk de ideale bondgenoten. Het zal kletteren. Chaos en morsigheid verzekerd !

Blues-rock gitarist Joe Bonamassa keert terug naar het Kursaal in Oostende nadat hij het in 2018 al moeiteloos uitverkocht. In mei 2019 stelde hij nog zijn meest recente album 'Redemption’ voor in een uitverkocht Koninklijk Circus in Brussel. 
Op 4 mei 2020 komt hij terug naar België en brengt hij samen met zijn virtuoze groepsleden - gebonden door hun gezamenlijke liefde voor muziek - naast nummers van zijn nieuwste album 'Redemption’ ook nummers van zijn milestone album 'Blues of Desperation’, fan favourites en verrassingen. 
In september 2018 kwam zijn - inmiddels al - dertiende album uit. Met 'Redemption’ brengt Joe Bonamassa een ode aan zijn grote idolen Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck en Jimmy Page. Veertig jaar Simple Minds. Dat moet gevierd worden! De iconische band doet dat in stijl, met twee nieuwe albums. De Canadese wereldster- die met nummers als 'The Power Of Love', 'Think Twice' én natuurlijk de Titanic-ballad 'My Heart Will Go On' de wereld veroverde - staat op 28 en 30 mei in het kader van haar 'Courage World Tour' in het Sportpaleis in Antwerpen. Op 10, 12 en 13 juni staat Céline Dion in Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam. De Courage World Tour mag met recht een wereldtour worden genoemd dankzij concerten in ruim 100 steden wereldwijd. Met haar fantastische livereputatie en uitzonderlijke vocal range is Céline Dion ongetwijfeld één van de meest onvergetelijke acts.
Eerder dit jaar zei Céline Dion haar succesvolle 16-jaar durende Las Vegas-residentie vaarwel, die maar liefst 1 141 shows op de teller heeft staan en 4,5 miljoen fans naar The Colosseum in Caesars Palace bracht! 2019 is voor Céline het jaar waarin ze een nieuw hoofdstuk in haar carrière start, weg van haar comfort zone. In juli gaf ze al een exclusieve Europese show op BST Hyde Park voor een indrukwekkende mensenmassa van 70 000 concertgangers.

Na een uitstekend concert in het Depot te Leuven in mei jl. komt Motorpsycho terug naar Belgie, op 4 oktober zijn ze live te zien in ‘s Gravenbrakel / Braine Le Compte.

Het verhaal van Motorpsycho begint in october 1989, onder de invloed van 70ies rock en psychedelische muziek. De Noorse band, die ondertussen al een indrukwekken aantal albums heeft uitgebracht (meer dan 20 in 30 jaar), kent een constante evolutie en speelt even gemakkelijk heavy metal als 'lichtere pop'.
Het enige wat alle albums gemeen hebben is die ongelooflijke constante kwaliteit van de nummers en hun ijzersterke arrangementen.
Live is het een unieke ervaring : bijna 3uur muziek, vol met wonderbaarlijke riffs en psychedelische invloeden! Onmisbaar !

Ze zijn zonder twijfel één van de meest succesvolle bands van de afgelopen jaren, maar de Belgische muziekwereld zal het de komende tijd zonder de charismatische heren van Triggerfinger moeten doen. De leden duwen voor minstens twee jaar de pauzeknop in. “Maar splitten is niet aan de orde.” ‘All this dancin’ around’, ‘Love lost in love’, de Lykke Li-cover ‘I follow rivers’ of ‘By absence of the sun’: de komende jaren zullen de fans van Triggerfinger enkel kunnen hopen dat ze deze nummers nog eens live mogen horen. De ‘luidste band van het land’ heeft immers beslist om zich minstens twee jaar lang te focussen op andere projecten.
​Een break die voor zanger Ruben Block (48), bassist Paul ‘Lange Polle’ Van Bruystegem (60) en drummer Mario Goossens (47) wel op een logisch moment komt, zo legt hun manager Eric Didden uit. “Triggerfinger vierde dit jaar hun twintigjarig jubileum en de steeds strak in het pak zittende heren koppelden daar met hun Colossus Tour ook nog eens een succesvolle tournee aan vast. Ze zijn toe aan rust”, klinkt het. “Het is de bedoeling dat Triggerfinger voor minstens twee jaar in de koelkast gaat, maar het is niet uitgesloten dat ze vroeger aan nieuwe muziek beginnen te werken. In feite is deze break heel logisch: de groep bestaat niet alleen twintig jaar, de heren zijn ook al twaalf jaar onafgebroken aan het touren. Dat kruipt in je kleren en dan is ademruimte niet alleen heel welkom, het stelt hen ook in staat om andere dingen te doen.”

Wat Ruben en Paul precies gaan doen, is voorlopig nog onduidelijk, maar in het geval van Mario - die wordt beschouwd als één van de beste drummers die er in ons land rondlopen - is er van een lege agenda al zeker geen sprake. Hij maakt volgende week vrijdag z’n debuut als televisie-presentator in de zesdelige docureeks ‘Paradise City’ op Canvas. “Ik ben daarvoor naar zes wereldsteden getrokken die getroffen werden door onheil”, legt Mario uit. “Ik wilde kijken of muziek het leven van de mensen ter plaatse kan helpen verbeteren. Al is ‘Paradise City’ veel meer geworden dan een docureeks. Er komt ook een radioprogramma, fotoboek, cd en op 31 oktober gaat de theatertournee van start. Met andere woorden: het komt wel even goed uit dat Triggerfinger een pauze heeft ingelast. Maar geloof me vrij: we zijn sowieso nog van plan om muziek te maken. Het is niet omdat we zeggen dat we een rustpunt inlassen, dat we uit elkaar gaan. Splitten is zeker en vast niet aan de orde.”

Today the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation (LAEF) announced three days of celebration in honor of the organization’s 50th Anniversary, including the Annual Louis Armstrong Continuum Symposium and Concert and the Annual Satchmo TM Award, with a special Lifetime Achievement Award to the LAEF board president.
 
On October 16, the Annual Louis Armstrong Continuum Symposium will include panel discussions with Daphne Brooks, Jon Faddis, Wycliffe Gordon, Michelle Miller and NEA Jazz Master Wynton Marsalis at the Lenfest Center for the Arts on Columbia’s Manhattanville campus. On October 17, in collaboration with the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia and the Manhattan School of Music (MSM), the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation will present the Louis Armstrong Continuum Concert, bringing to the stage The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong TM All Stars and the MSM Jazz Orchestra’s Art Blakey Tribute, conducted by Jon Faddis. The Celebration will close on October 18 at the historic Alhambra Ballroom with a Swing Dance Party starring the George Gee Swing Orchestra featuring special guest Dick Hyman. The evening includes the presentation of the LAEF SATCHMO TM Award to pianist and composer Dick Hyman, followed by the first Lifetime Achievement Award presented to LAEF president and NEA Jazz Master, Stanley Crouch. These events are all free and open to the public.
 
The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation is proud to present the2019 SATCHMO ™ Award to jazz pianist, organist, composer, and arranger Dick Hyman. The Satchmo™ Award represents a tribute to the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong’s passion for jazz, excellence and his commitment to sharing his music with the world.  The award is presented by LAEF to an individual for his/her important and lasting contributions in the world of jazz education. In making the announcement of the 2019 Satchmo™ Award, LAEF President Stanley Crouch and SATCHMO ™ Award Chairperson David Chevan released this joint statement: “At 92, Dick Hyman continues to exemplify Louis Armstrong’s commitment to jazz and jazz education on and off the bandstand, through his lessons collected in Dick Hyman’s Century of Jazz Piano; as the founder and artistic director of the Jazz in July series at the 92ndStreet Y for its first two decades; working with high school students where he lives in Sarasota County, Florida; and in his lifetime of championing the music of Armstrong’s era and Armstrong himself; and for his achievements as a performer and prolific film composer. In 1974, three years after Armstrong’s passing, Hyman orchestrated a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, which he later took on tour to Europe and the former Soviet Union. Armstrong and his legacy have played an integral role in his career as a global jazz ambassador, and the presentation of the Satchmo™ Award recognizes Hyman’s contribution to the wonderful world that its namesake envisioned.”  
 
In celebration of LAEF’s 50thAnniversaryand in honor of his extensive contributions to the world of jazz, as a writer, advocate, historian, and educator, Stanley Crouch will be present a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Board of Directors. The LAEF Executive Committee stated that Mr. Crouch’s body of work, which includes columns, essays, and novels combined with his thought-provoking lectures, and provocative interviews of various leaders in the world of jazz have worked to advance the importance of this great music in academic communities and has raised the awareness of jazz as an important modern art form in the general public. He has reached audiences across the country and beyond. 
 
On Friday, October 18, the award presentations will take place at the historic Alhambra Ball Room in Harlem, where swing dancers, big bands and jazz vocalists once reigned supreme. The Satchmo™ Award will be held from 8:00-10:00pm. The Alhambra Ballroom is located at 2116 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd. This event is also free and open to the public.

The Louis Armstrong Continuum
Presented by Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies in conjunction with the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, this symposium honors Louis Armstrong as one of contemporary music’s founding fathers. Through this two-day series of sessions and concerts, we explore the range of his influence in music but also in literature, visual art, and social justice. Who knew that Armstrong created collages? Who knew that his name and image come up over and over again in literature and in film? Hearing from a wide range of musicians and scholars, The Armstrong Continuum will consider the continuing impact on the broad cultural scene. 
 
Because the study of the forms and functions of jazz is required of every student in Columbia College as part of our Core Curriculum, this symposium will be addressed to the entire campus. Let us then ask these questions, too: How might the way Armstrong lived and made music provide models of forthright community action—particularly at a time of emergency? What are the most profound lessons to be learned from improvisation, from the jagged grain of the blues, from the flight and momentum of the music, from its love of dynamic coordination that musicians still call swing? What about the jazz band’s lessons about who we are, both as individuals and as members of a world-wide family in motion? At Columbia, the virtuosic Armstrong is taught along with Plato, Shakespeare, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Virginia Woolf: What special information would Pops send our way? The Armstrong Continuum is honored to present an all-star line-up of presenters and musicians….

The Manhattan School of Music   
Manhattan School of Music was one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the importance of jazz as an art form by establishing undergraduate and graduate degree programs in jazz. The program, led by Associate Dean and Director Stefon Harris since fall 2017, is one of the richest of its kind, combining systematic and rigorous conservatory training with a myriad of performance and networking opportunities in New York City. Students have the opportunity to perform in various ensembles, including the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Philharmonic, and Chamber Jazz Orchestra, as well as a variety of small combos. In addition to studies with a faculty drawn from the highest ranks of the jazz world, students are provided opportunities to play for and observe world-renowned guest artists. www.msmnyc.edu

This Award was created by The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and represents a tribute to the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong's passion for jazz and excellence matched only by his joyous love of life and children. The recipients of The Satchmo™ Award are selected for their important and lasting contributions in the world of jazz education. The recipients reflect the spirit of Louis Armstrong and his inspiring belief in the power of the language of jazz music, essential in making a “wonderful world.”
 
DICK HYMAN
NEA Jazz Master (2017), Dick Hyman (b. Richard Hyman, March 8, 1927) in New York City is an American jazz pianist, composer and arranger whose career has spanned over 60 years. He was classically trained by his mother’s brother and later his brother Arthur introduced him to the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong and Teddy Wilson— who broke the race barrier as a member of Benny Goodman’s trio. While in high school, Hyman played piano in bands throughout Westchester County, New York.  In 1945, he entered Columbia College for one year before enlisting in the Navy as a radio technician and later transferred to the band department. Upon his return to Columbia College, where he graduated in 1948, he won an on-air piano competition that earned him twelve free lessons with Teddy Wilson. A few years later, Hyman occupied that same piano chair, of Wilson, in Goodman’s band.
 
While developing improvisation in his own piano style, Hyman also studied ragtime and earlier periods of jazz and has recorded the piano music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake and Fats Waller. In 1952, he played with Charlie Parker on the only television appearance that Parker ever made; the band included Dizzy Gillespie and they played the tune, Hot House. An in-demand pianist, some of his early club engagements in New York City included Café Society, playing with Tony Scott’s Quartet; Bop City with the Red Norvo Sextet; various 52nd Street clubs with Sol Yaged and others. Eventually Hyman became a freelance pianist, organist, arranger, composer, music director for many radio, television and Broadway shows. In 1975, he led the New York Jazz Repertory Company in a concert of the music of Louis Armstrong at Carnegie Hall, produced by George Wein. A recording on Atlantic Records followed, as well as tours of Europe and numerous U.S. concerts. 
 
Of his many achievements, one of his most significant was his position as founder and artistic director for the “Jazz in July” series at New York's 92nd Street Y. For twenty years (he stepped down in 2004) he made the place one of the best to celebrate jazz. He brought a unique combination of jazz paring, such as Phil Woods with Duduka Da Fonseca and Freddie Cole with an organ trio. He also brought Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Ray Bryant and other great pianists together on one stage. His successor, Bill Charlap, said that Hyman was the “perfect person to bring this type of festival together because he has so much music in him and he loves and understands and is able to play so much music and has such a great relationship with the musicians around him. He did it his way with integrity, passion and intensity for the music.” In 1995, Hyman was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies and the New Jersey Jazz Society.
 
Stanley Crouch
Stanley Lawrence Crouch, born December 14, 1945 in Los Angeles, California, is an American poet, musical and cultural critic, syndicated columnist, novelist and biographer. He is the author of eight critically acclaimed books and of hundreds of uncollected articles, liner notes and reviews of jazz. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) chose him as one of the 2019 recipients of the coveted A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for Jazz Advocacy. Currently Crouch is the president of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation (elected on June 12, 2008) and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science. “Each generation has a moment, or an embodiment, of hard-earned integrity and the keenest insight. Among our generation of writers, Stanley Crouch is that moment, ”wrote Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
 
Raised in a single-parent home, he immersed himself with books and old movies and taught himself to play the drums while becoming interested in jazz and poetry. From 1965 to 1967, Crouch worked as an actor and a playwright under the direction of Jayne Cortez in both Studio Watts and the Watts Repertory Theatre Company in Los Angeles. He taught at the Claremont Colleges (1968 to 1975), first as poet-in-residence at Pitzer, then as the first full-time faculty member of the Black Studies Center (BSC), and finally in a joint appointment to the BSC and the English Department of Pomona College. In 1975, Crouch moved to New York City to focus on his writing. When his freelance writing took off he gave up his performing. By 1979, Crouch became a staff writer for The Village Voice where he remained until 1988. He also wrote a column for the New York Daily News from 1995-2014. After his stint at the Voice, Crouch published Notes of a Hanging Judge: Essays and Reviews, 1979-1989and was selected by The Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook as the best book of essays published in 1990. 
He has served as Artistic Consultant for jazz programming at Lincoln Center since 1987 and is a founder of the jazz department, known as Jazz at Lincoln Center. Making history for JALC, Wynton Marsalis, who became artistic director in 1991, asked Crouch to write a sermon for his 1996 recording, The Majesty of the Blues entitled “Premature Autopsies.” 
 
Crouch has also served as visiting professor at Columbia University in New York City.  He holds honorary doctorates from Hofstra University and Manhattan College, and he has received a Guggenheim Fellowship (1982), Whiting Award (1991), MacArthur Fellowship (1993), and Fletcher Foundation Fellowship (2005). In 2016, Crouch was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for nonfiction from Yale University. He appeared frequently on television as a commentator, often on topics related to jazz, and in 2001 Crouch was one of the prominent jazz scholars featured in Ken Burns’ epic 10-part television documentary, Jazz.
 
His most recent book, Kansas City Lightning: The Rise and Times of Charlie Parker (Harper Collins) was published in 2013. 

Ginger Baker, drummer en oprichter van de Engelse rockband Cream ligt in kritieke toestand in het ziekenhuis. Dat meldt de familie van de muzikant op Twitter.
In het Twitter-bericht liet de familie vannacht weten dat Baker zeer ernstig ziek is, maar licht niet verder toe wat hem nu mankeert. "Laten we voor hem bidden", staat er slechts.

De 80-jarige Baker onderging drie jaar geleden een open hart-operatie maar volgens The Mirror is niet bekend is waarom hij nu in het ziekenhuis ligt.

Baker - wiens echte naam Peter Edward Baker is - was de oprichter van de in de zestiger jaren populaire rock- en bluesband Cream waar in 1966 ook Eric Clapton en Jack Bruce lid van werden. Bruce overleed op 25 oktober 2014 op 71-jarige leeftijd.

De band zou de standaard zetten voor rockbands die bestonden uit een drummer, een bassist en een gitarist, zogenaamde powertrio's. "Sunshine of Your Love" en "White Room" behoren tot de bekendste nummers van de band.

Een optreden dat, vanwege de uitstekende show vorige keer, met luid gejuich ontvangen zal worden door de vaste bezoekers van het gratis toegankelijke JazzRock Café dat we al enige jaren organiseren i.s.m. SmoothJazz Europe. En dat is in het geval van The Lao Tizer Band, en helemaal in deze bezetting, meer dan terecht!

Naast de naamgever van de band, Lao Tizer die al vroeg in zijn carrière een nominatie in de wacht wist te slepen als Best New Jazz Artist en die je ook kan kennen van Special EFX en Down To The Bone, bestaat de band die je vanavond in actie gaat zien uit de met een Grammy genomineerde gitarist Chieli Minucci die overigens ook 3 Emmy’s in de kast heeft staan. Drummer Gene Coye heeft dan weer een Grammy en speelde met o.a. Larry Carlton en Terence Blanchard en op bas de eveneens met een Grammy genomineerde Ric Fierabracci die speelde met o.m. Chick Corea, Billy Cobham en Blood Sweat & Tears.

Dit sterrenensemble gaat zich deze avond vooral richten op stukken die in 2018 zijn verschenen op de cd/dvd Songs From The Swinghouse.
In het Muziekcafé kan je natuurlijk zitten maar reken maar dat de stoelen vanavond een rustig avondje gaan hebben!

De wereldberoemde gitaar van B.B. King heeft op een veiling 280.000 dollar (307.000 euro) opgeleverd, meldt Deadline. Lucille, zoals de blueslegende het instrument noemde, ging onder de hamer bij het Amerikaanse veilinghuis Julien’s Auctions.

Het bedrag is een stuk hoger dan verwacht. Het veilinghuis schatte vooraf dat de gitaar tussen de 80.000 en 100.000 dollar zou opleveren. Tijdens de veiling gingen in totaal meer dan 550 items van King onder de hamer, waaronder awards, foto’s, kleding en juwelen. King kreeg de gitaar, die speciaal door fabrikant Gibson voor hem was ontworpen, op zijn tachtigste verjaardag. Op de hals van het zwarte instrument staat de tekst B.B. King 80.
De zanger had overigens meerdere gitaren die hij Lucille noemde. In 1949 gaf hij na een optreden de naam al aan een van zijn gitaren. Tijdens dat concert brak in de zaal brand uit, waarna het pand geëvacueerd moest worden. Buiten kwam King tot de ontdekking dat hij zijn gitaar had laten liggen. Hij ging terug naar binnen om zijn geliefde instrument te redden. Achteraf bleek de brand te zijn uitgebroken tijdens een ruzie tussen twee mannen. Ze vochten om een vrouw die Lucille heette.
Zijn gitaar kreeg daarna de naam Lucille om hem eraan te herinneren nooit om een vrouw ’te vechten of een brandend gebouw in te rennen’. De zanger schreef ook een nummer over het verhaal. Dat liedje Lucille staat op het gelijknamige album uit 1968.
King overleed in 2015 op 89-jarige leeftijd.

Ben Watt releaset op 31 januari 2020 zijn 4de studio album Storm Damage. De wederhelft van Tracey Thorn in het muziekduo 'Everything But The Girl' besloot 6 jaar geleden om zich te focussen op zijn solocarrière en bracht tussentijds reeds 3 albums uit.

"I needed a fresh approach," zegt Watt (56). "The album came out of an intense period of personal anguish and political anger. Sometimes repeating yourself musically feels disrespectful to the sharpness of your feelings. You have to search for a new way to capture the energy."

Gedurende 4 decennia was Watt steeds vooruit op zijn tijd. Van zijn folk-project met Robert Wyatt, naar 17 jaar als co-writer en lid van Everything But The Girl (samen met Tracey Thorn) tot zijn eigen soloalbums, waaronder de award-winning Hendra (2014) en Fever Dream (2016).
 
Het nieuwe album Storm Damage, geproducet door Watt zelf, is hierop geen uitzondering. De hele plaat is een persoonlijke reis door angst en verandering. Op het album wordt gebruik gemaakt van, zoals Watt zelf zegt, een "future-retro trio": een buffetpiano, een contrabas en hybride akoestisch-elektronische drums. Daarnaast zijn er ook heel wat 'found sounds' te horen die Watt opnam op openbare plaatsen.

 
Storm Damage ontstond tijdens een donkere periode in het leven van Watt. Zo stierf zijn halfbroer onverwachts in 2016, slechts 4 jaar nadat zijn halfzus gestorven was.

Het album verschijnt op 31 januari 2020, digitaal, op vinyl, CD en als download.

‘All You Need Is Love!’ is terug! De spectaculaire musical over het leven en de ongelooflijke carrière van The Beatles keert volgend jaar terug naar ons land. De muzikaal en visueel hoogstaande show was eerder te zien in Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland, de Verenigde Staten, China, Italië, Oostenrijk, Denemarken, Zwitserland en Duitsland, en hield in 2016 voor het eerst halt in België, in een uitverkocht Kursaal Oostende. In 2020, exact 60 jaar na het ontstaan van de band en 20 jaar na het ontstaan van de musical, is ‘All You Need Is Love!’ te zien in Antwerpen.

De unieke muzikale biografie vertelt het verhaal van één van de meest bekende en meest invloedrijke bands aller tijden. Een onwaarschijnlijk succesverhaal! In de hoofdrol van deze musical staat het kwartet Twist & Shout. Niet enkel de treffende fysieke gelijkenissen van het viertal uit Las Vegas doen je geloven dat John, Paul, George en Ringo op het podium staan, de artiesten treden ook live op in de originele kostuums en leven zich zodanig in dat ze hun publiek een instant Beatles feeling bezorgen! Ze spelen meer dan dertig onsterfelijke hits, als "Yellow Submarine", "Let It Be", "Yesterday" en "Hey Jude", terwijl authentieke historische beelden op de achtergrond de echte Beatles weer tot leven brengen.

‘All You Need Is Love!’ is op zaterdag 30 mei 2020 te zien in de prachtige Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerpen. Tickets voor het spektakel zijn beschikbaar vanaf vrijdag 27 september om 10u. Een must see voor iedere Beatles fan!

Multi-platinum platen en tal van andere awards pronken op haar kast. Een derde album ‘Manic’ (release voorzien op 17 januari 2020) met de hits “Without Me” en “Graveyard” heeft ze in het vooruitzicht. Net zoals een nieuwe tournee! Singer-songwriter Halsey kondigt vandaag de 2020 Manic World Tour aan, met 19 data in 15 landen in Europa. Antwerpen en zijn Lotto Arena staan mee in dat lijstje. Op donderdag 5 maart komt Halsey naar België. De ticketverkoop start vrijdag 27 september om 10u.
 
Halsey is een rijzende ster aan het popfirmament. De teller van haar muziekstreams begon te lopen in 2015 en staat inmiddels op 23 miljard. Voeg daar ook maar meer dan 9 miljoen verkochte albums aan toe. Haar concerten verkopen zowat overal uit. Zo ook de Ancienne Belgique in 2018. Halsey is eveneens een veel gevraagde gaste op tracks van andere artiesten. Een selectie uit haar vele samenwerkingen: The Chainsmokers – “Closer”, Justin Bieber – “The Feeling”, G-Eazy – “Him & I”, BTS – “Boy With Luv”, Yungblud – “11 Minutes”. Singles die stuk voor stuk de charts inklimmen. Net zoals haar eigen tracks.
 
Halsey verlegt steeds haar creatieve grenzen, wat haar invloed en impact tot ver buiten de muziek doet reiken. Na een geslaagd filmdebuut als de stem van Wonder Woman in de animatiefilm ‘Teen Titans’, speelde ze ook een rol in de meermaals bekroonde film “A Star is Born” met Bradley Cooper en Lady Gaga in de hoofdrol. Ze ijvert openlijk voor zaken die haar nauw aan het hart liggen als kansarme jongeren, vrouwenrechten, geestelijke gezondheid en de LGBTQ-gemeenschap. Die community riep haar vorig jaar uit tot 'Outstanding Music Artist'.

​ILA is de nom de plume van de 22-jarige singer-songwriter Ilayda Cicek. Met haar muziek, gekenmerkt door een uniek stemgeluid en vergezeld van een gitaar, staat ILA garant voor rauwe emoties die meer dan eens de grilligheid van het leven blootleggen. Een eigenzinnige en intense artieste, zoveel is duidelijk.

ILA is geen onbekende meer. In 2017 behaalde de singer-songwriter zilver op Limbomania en in 2018 werd ze geselecteerd voor zowel De Nieuwe Lichting als Humo’s Rock Rally. Puik!

Vandaag releaset ILA 'Nude', de voorloper van de EP 'Montage', die op 18 oktober 2019 verschijnt onder Noisesome Recordings (jawel, het label van onder meer SONS, Equal Idiots, High Hi, Psycho 44 en Hypochristmutreefuzz)
«'Nude' handelt over een verbondenheid, getekend door wantrouwen en uitgedoofde passie, die toch blijft voortbestaan in een vicieuze cirkel van besef en ontkenning», aldus ILA over haar nieuwe worp. 

In februari 2018 bracht ILA haar debuut EP uit. Met enkel een akoestische en elektrische gitaar, haar kenmerkende stem en een minimalistische live-opname, weet ILA vier driftige en eigenzinnige nummers neer te zetten. Het geheel voelt als een innerlijke tegenstrijdigheid, steeds twijfelend tussen hoop en wanhoop. ILA brengt zowel de schreeuw als de stilte. 

Hoog tijd voor een vervolg, zodus! De opvolger is de EP 'Montage', komt uit op 18 oktober 2019 en wordt op 19 oktober voorgesteld in Muziekodroom in Hasselt! Een bijzondere avond, gegarandeerd.

A new album release from Tommy Sands is always a special event but “Fair Play To You All” on Spring Records is perhaps one of his most special offerings of all.
One glance at the cover or a single listen to the music will immediately delight of course but there is so much behind the cover and between the lines that you will find yourself slowly feasting on the contents for a long time to come.
The title itself is an oft used throwaway line in Ireland but in the pen-hand of Tommy Sands it becomes much more profound and an overture to the album itself.

Uriah Heep’s lead singer Bernie Shaw has been working on a new studio album, in between the band’s tour dates, with his bandmate from the music scene in Victoria, guitarist and songwriter Dale Collins.
 
The duo has released an EP in Canada, however, it only included some of the songs they’d worked on together and was recorded many years back. This new studio album sees them re-record those tracks afresh, along with the other songs from their collaboration.
 
The album has Bernie working with same people he’d worked with on recent Uriah Heep projects, including sound engineer Steve Rispin, mastering engineer Mike Pietrini, graphic designer Mike Inns and label/copyrights manager Daniel Earnshaw.
 
The album is available as a CD, 180gsm LP, Download and on Streaming platforms. The CD is a six panel digipack which matches many of the recent Uriah Heep releases and back catalogue re-releases, so the album will look great sitting alongside the band’s catalogue in a fan’s collection.

No-one involved with the project can believe the release date of 13th September 2019 is 6 years to the day that the very first email was sent between them suggesting the project. It’s been a labour of love, with work completed as and when time and schedules allowed.
 
Of the album Bernie Shaw said: “This album has been a long time in the making as Uriah Heep still occupies almost 200 days of my year! But we’ve done it! l’m very proud of the end result. Working from two sides of the world is not an easy task, but the power and the energy of these songs shine through. I can’t wait for the reaction from both the Heep fans and beyond! Rock on!”
 
Dale Collins added: “It’s been a long journey to make this album. Thanks to the thousands of fans who have followed the process and corresponded with me throughout. I am very pleased to see it completed.”

Linde's tweede single is geladen met een intensiteit die haast eng is. In Leave zingt ze over liefdestrauma in haar kenmerkende idioom: hels maar ingehouden drama aan de zachtere kant van de volumeknop.

"Leave is geen verzoek om op te hoepelen", zegt ze, "het is geen sneer die je iemand tijdens een ruzie naar het hoofd slingert: de relatie die ik bedoel, heeft dat strijdtoneel nooit bereikt. Uiteindelijk is loslaten het tederste teken van liefde dat je iemand kunt schenken".

In Leave vermijdt Linde de grote gebaren door zich terug te trekken in haar favoriete performance paradox:  de grote-vrouwenstem in het lichaam van een meisjeskind. Haar ingetogenheid wordt spaarzaam gekaderd door gitarist Jeroen Huyzentruyt – die akkoordjes steekt om de harmonie te suggereren die niet in de tekst zit – en percussionist Jef De Smet – die het leed in een suggestie van ritme verdrinkt. Jeroen en Jef suggereren de verhalen die Linde nog niet kan vertellen.

Melanie Martinez is een artieste die haar eigen excentrieke universum creëert. Ze verwierf bekendheid bij het grote publiek toen ze in 2012 deelnam aan The Voice in de Verenigde staten, waarna ze een platencontract tekende en haar identiteit als songschrijver en muzikante verder begon te ontwikkelen. De single 'Dollhouse’ vormt de basis van het verhaal, waarbij speelgoedgeluiden de belangrijkste inspiratie zijn. Rond deze geluiden begon Melanie te schrijven en haar personage Cry Baby uit te diepen op haar gelijknamige debuutalbum "Cry Baby" (2015). "Cry Baby" behaalde de nummer 1-positie in de Billboard Alternative Album Charts en heeft in totaal meer dan 2 miljard streams wereldwijd.
Nu is de multigetalenteerde popster terug met "K-12”, de langverwachte opvolger van haar debuutplaat, met een bijhorende film die geschreven en geregisseerd werd door Martinez en waarin zijzelf ook de hoofdrol vertolkt. Former Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey has juggled a number of different projects over the course of his long career in music - from the Western-themed outfit Gunslinger, to the Middle East-tinged Bedouin and, more recently, the incredibly ambitious Hawkwind supergroup Hawkestrel, made up of 9 alumni of that quintessential and legendary British space/psych band. But before there was Hawkestrel, there was The Psychedelic Warlords! Named after the lead off track from Hawkwind’s fifth album, 1974’s Hall Of The Mountain Grill, the band consists of frontman Craig High, keyboardist Zoie Green, guitarist Simon Wilkins and drummer Billy Fleming on drums (who worked as Motörhead’s drum tech for 12 years) with Davey on bass, of course. In 2014, this troop set up an epic concert performances to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 2 landmark albums, which they played in their entirety - the aforementioned Hall Of The Mountain Grill by Hawkwind as well as Robert Calvert’s debut solo album, the masterful Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters. It was an acid trip down memory lane like no other for that London audience, and now fans around the world can join the fun on 2 live albums to be released two weeks apart. 
 
Coming on September 27, Alan Davey’s Psychedelic Warlords will release Hall Of The Mountain Grill (London 2014) on both CD in a special digipak and a 2LP vinyl set of limited edition ORANGE vinyl! Then, on October 11 comes, Captain Lockheed & The Starfighters Live! also released on digipak CD and in a single LP vinyl set in limited edition YELLOW vinyl. As an added bonus, each of the vinyl editions has been hand-signed by Mr. Davey himself. 
 
Davey shares some thoughts on the live performances: “Lemmy once told me Hall of the Mountain Grill was his favorite Hawkwind album so celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release in 2014 seemed like a must-do to me. The same year in 1974 Bob Calvert's classic album Captain Lockheed and the Starfighers was also released so matching the two albums together in one live show was a no brainer to me. Also, the Captain Lockheed album was never performed live so this was gonna be a real treat for Hawkwind fans! The venues were packed, the engines were running and everyone in the audience was blown away by the Psychedelic Warlords’ renditions of these two great albums. So glad we had the foresight to record the London show so now all Hawkwind fans can enjoy the moment!”

​Seminal contemporary jazz band mines a collection of vinyl classics for their first album in six years. “Vinyl Tap” drops October 11 with the first single, “Can’t Find My Way Home,” going for playlist adds September 23.
 
NEW YORK CITY (18 September 2019): Free of the tension of having to write great songs, the five members of Spyro Gyra were laughing and having fun in the recording studio. Creativity flowed as the venerable contemporary jazz band revisited the songs that inspired them from their youth when they were listening to music on vinyl. That artistic fount was spun into “Vinyl Tap,” Spyro Gyra’s first album in six years, which drops October 11 on the Amherst Records label.      
                                        
“It was tensionless as we ‘warped’ the tunes. We had a world of brilliant music to choose from and we didn’t have to worry about writing brilliant music. It was a really fun project to make,” said saxophonist Jay Beckenstein, who will lead Spyro Gyra on tour to support “Vinyl Tap” with a string of US concert dates beginning November 15 in Newark, NJ after a three-week international trek that begins at the Cancun Jazz Festival on October 23.
 
When Spyro Gyra manager Phil Brennan proposed the album’s concept a few years ago to bandleader Beckenstein for their 31st album, he knew that it might take some convincing, so he came prepared with an intriguing concept. Brennan suggested that the band use their arrangement talents to transform the originals into something brand new. The challenge appealed to Beckenstein, who soon overcame any misgivings.
 
“It’s cliché (to record covers) in saxophone-based contemporary jazz. We did not want to sound like a fantastic wedding band. I was really afraid that if we didn’t do our own thing, that our identity would be lost. It was imperative in the creative process – and everybody (in the band) knew this in a big way – that things had to be mixed up. Things had to be jolted out of the old way of approaching the songs. We really tried to come up with a new take on whatever (song) we were doing. We put solos into tunes that really are complete extensions that never had anything to do with the originals,” said Beckenstein.
 
What initially stands out on “Vinyl Tap,” which was produced by Spyro Gyra, are the wildly imaginative arrangements. Beckenstein said, “The arrangements were put together with everyone in my basement with all the equipment set up. We were all together in the pre-studio arrangement process. It was all done democratically. Spyro Gyra is a musician’s group collective. When you have five talented guys, you can do some cool arranging things.” 
 
Spyro Gyra are Beckenstein, Tom Schuman (keyboards), Julio Fernandez (guitars), Scott Ambush (bass) and Lionel Cordew (drums). The musicians have somewhat of a wide range of ages, which explains some of the diversity of the material recorded for “Vinyl Tap.” Beckenstein selected the album opener, “Secret Agent Mash,” a supercharged and ultrahip mashup of “Secret Agent Man” and “Alfie’s Theme.” “Sunshine Of Your Love” is virtually unrecognizable in its new form as a Latin big band number. The first cut going for playlist adds on September 23 is the plaintive “Can’t Find My Way Home,” which takes on a bit of a western feel and benefits from the soulful perspective of Beckenstein’s saxophone protagonist. “What A Fool Believes” is slowed to become a contemplative power ballad that breaks into a mid-song swing cadence.
 
“I spent a lot of time listening to radio – classic rock radio – looking for material that had fantastic melodies. If there was a beautiful, arching melody, like ‘What A Fool Believes,’ it would definitely translate to my saxophone ‘voice,’” said Beckenstein.         
 
Adding chromatic and bass harmonicas by Gary Schreiner, “The Cisco Kid” vacillates in time and tempo, letting the band members stretch out into improvisational banter. Exemplative of Spyro Gyra’s ethos, each band member shares the spotlight equitably, adding sweetness and redolent depth to “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away.” “Tempted” always oozed soul, but the band’s reading is deliberate, adding romance and underscoring the sweeping chorus. “Stolen Moments” is another that essentially becomes an “original” composition in Spyro Gyra’s inventive hands after the piece was reconstructed using entirely new, deft and complex rhythms. The set closes with an exhilarating romp cascading through a groovy expanse on “Carry On.” 
 
“This is the first record we’ve done where we have allowed ourselves to do other people’s material full throttle,” said Beckenstein. “That is not to say in any way that we tried to copy what other people did, but it was really great to reach outside of our writing capabilities for inspiration for us to take off on. And that’s what this album is about.”

​“Morning Walk” went for playlist adds on Monday ahead of the October 4 album release.
 
CHICAGO (17 September 2019): Inspiration strikes artists even when on holiday break. As pianist Brian Culbertson strolled the frigid streets of Chicago last winter, he felt compelled to write music. Feeling the cold air, seeing his breath and hearing the crunch of snow under his feet spurred the creation of “Winter Stories,” a contemplative collection of melodic musical “stories” recorded in a jazz trio setting. The first “story” that will preface the BCM Entertainment release dropping October 4 is “Morning Walk,” which went for playlist adds on Monday.     
 
When Culbertson returned from that inspired walk, he started composing the first piece for the album that, over time, will become a four-album series: separate stories for each season. He wrote and demoed one song per day for ten consecutive days. After each day’s session, he’d head back into the cold, taking the demo out for a walk. Upon his return, he’d make adjustments to the composition until “it was just right.”
 
Best known for crafting a catalogue of R&B, jazz and funk hits, Culbertson felt that this pensive and introspective album would best be presented by a jazz trio. Knowing that drummer Khari Parker has a deft touch with brushes to craft the gentle rhythms, Culbertson had only one acoustic bassist in mind: Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group). They knew each other from the Chicago jingle scene at the beginning of Culbertson’s professional career and Rodby played on a track on the keyboardist’s second album, “Modern Life” (1995). 
 
“Understanding Steve’s jazz/pop sensibilities and knowing how musical and ‘in tune’ he plays upright bass, I knew that he was the only one who could play on this record,” said Culbertson.
 
Culbertson describes “Winter Stories” not as a Christmas album, but as a hybrid. “It is very melodic with a pop structure, but utilizing traditional straight-ahead jazz elements - acoustic piano, upright bass and drums with brushes – which give it a ‘holiday’ feel, but also something you can listen to any time since these are all new original songs. However, what was unusual is that the three of us didn’t record together. I produced the album using a layered approach, which also makes it more of a pop-styled record, replacing each demo track one at a time. I first recorded piano, then layered Wurlitzer, Rhodes and B3 organ parts sparsely to add depth here and there. After that was drums and then bass was last. A couple tracks also called for percussion, which was played by Lenny Castro.”
 
While writing his “Winter Stories” - the inspiration for all ten stories is shared in the accompanying liner notes, which is another first for Culbertson – he spotted a painting online that he felt perfectly encapsulated the album’s motif. So, he bought the painting and made it the album cover.
 
“It was exactly what was in my mind. I wanted it to be like an intriguing book cover, the kind that after you look at it, you get a sense of what the music is like and then compels you to want to listen,” said Culbertson, who curates, hosts and headlines his second annual Chicago Jazz Getaway running this Thursday through Sunday, a spinoff of his wildly popular Napa Valley Jazz Getaway.      
 
A second single from “Winter Stories” is planned for just prior to the holiday season. Going for adds on November 18, “City Sleigh Ride” is one of the album’s more up-tempo and fun adventures, and the only song with sleigh bells. “While most of the album is on the slower, more ruminative side of things, it was important for me to break up the feel a little bit with a couple tracks,” said Culbertson.
 
After a recent YouTube Premiere with fans, the video for the album opener, “Sitting By The Fire,” is now available for viewing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkuG5bxnQgc). “I’d say the best time to listen to this record is when it’s the coldest and bleakest outside,” said Culbertson. “These songs will warm you up and keep you cozy.”
