​Longtime Tower of Power bassist Francis Rocco Prestia Jr., better known by his stage name, Rocco Prestia, has died at the age of 69, the legendary funk outfit confirmed in a social media post on Wednesday morning. While the cause of death was not specifically stated, Prestia had battled serious health issues since 2001 and underwent liver transplant surgery in 2014.
Prestia initially auditioned for the band that would eventually become known as Tower of Power in the group’s early days as a guitarist, but was persuaded to switch to the bass. The decision to switch instruments proved to be prescient, as Prestia went on to become a renowned bass player and a pioneer of the “fingerstyle funk” approach, in which he would lightly mute the strings with his left hand to add a percussive feel to his playing while maintaining clear and accurate pitch. That characteristic sound helped put him at the forefront of an innovative period for electric bass players in the early 1970s.

Ook in dit tiende seizoen verandert er niets aan de ijzersterke formule van de reeks. Artiesten vertellen openhartig over hun prilste inspiraties, de eerste schuchtere optredens, de zoektocht naar een artistieke identiteit, het geploeter voor de erkenning, de gelukzalige roes van de doorbraak, de kater van het succes, het tot stand komen van bekende nummers, de strapatsen on tour, de buitenlandse zege of mislukking, de pijnlijke split of de eeuwige camaraderie. 
Interviews met de hoofdfiguren worden afgewisseld met bijdragen van (ex-) bandleden, familieleden, producers, collega-muzikanten, managers, muziekkenners, journalisten en andere kroongetuigen. Het verhaal wordt verteld door de vertrouwde stem van Luc Janssen en rijkelijk geïllustreerd met (vaak nooit eerder getoonde) archiefbeelden.

​Zangeres Helen Reddy, die in 1972 als feministisch icoon werd beschouwd dankzij haar hit 'I Am Woman', is gisteren in Los Angeles overleden op 78-jarige leeftijd. Dat hebben haar dochters Traci en Jordan bekendgemaakt. Helen's single 'I Am Woman' vloog in 1972 naar de eerste plaats van de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot 100. Haar singles 'Delta Dawn', 'Angie Baby' en 'I Can't Hear You No More' volgden in 1973, 1974 en 1976 dat voorbeeld. Haar andere Top 10 hits in de Verenigde Staten waren 'Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)', 'You And Me Against The World' en 'AIn’t No Way To Treat A Lady'. In 1973 won Helen een Grammy Award voor 'I Am Woman' en sprak zij de legendarische woorden "I thank God because She makes everything possible". In datzelfde jaar presenteerde Helen haar eigen televisieshow 'The Helen Reddy Show', voordat zij overstapte naar een loopbaan als actrice in films als 'Pete’s Dragon' en 'Airport ’75'. Reddy ging al vroeg rentenieren, maar zou in 2012 weer terugkeren met optredens. Reddy was een geboren Australische, maar liet zich in 1974 naturaliseren tot Amerikaans staatsburger. Daarna kwam zij regelmatig in het nieuws als politiek activiste. In 2002 begon de zangeres aan een medische studie en werd zij klinisch hynotherapeut. Reddy groeide in Melbourne in een show business gezin op en werd in haar geboorteland een heldin, toen zij als eerste Australische een Grammy Award won. In 2006 publiceerde Helen haar biografie onder de titel 'The Woman I Am'. In Nederland kennen we Helen Reddy vooral van haar versie van 'I Don't Know How To Love Him' (1971) uit de rockopera 'Jesus Christ Superstar' en haar hitsingle 'No Sad Song' (1972). Daarnaast zullen velen Helen's optreden in 1981 in het programma 'Mies' van Mies Bouwman nog herinneren. Helen Reddy ruste in vrede! .

​Mac Davis, de schrijver van Elvis Presley's wereldhit 'In The Ghetto' en voormalig 'ACM Entertainer of the Year' winnaar, is gisteren in Nashville overleden. Hij werd 78 jaar oud. Dit heeft zijn manager Jim Morey bekendgemaakt. Morris Mac Davis werd in Lubbock, Texas geboren. Na zijn schooltijd verhuisde Mac naar Atlanta. Hij formeerde een rockband en werkte voor een aantal platenmaatschappijen. Vervolgens begon hij aan een loopbaan als songwriter bij Nancy Sinatra's Boots Enterprises, Inc. Hij speelde ook mee op plaatopnamen van Nancy Sinatra en begeleidde haar tijdens optredens. Nadat Mac voor Elvis Presley successen als 'In The Ghetto' (oorspronkelijk getiteld ‘The Viciuos Circle’) en 'A Little Less Conversation' had geschreven, begon hij aan een loopbaan als uitvoerend artiest in het country-genre en had hij succes met liedjes als 'Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me' en 'Stop And Smell The Roses'. In 1975 won hij de prestigieuze 'ACM Entertainer of the Year Award'. Davis scoorde zes Top 10 hits in de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot Country Songs lijst. 'Hooked On Music' werd in dat opzicht de grootste hit met een tweede plaats in die lijst. Daarnaast scoorde hij vier Top 10 hits als songwriter in de Billboard Hot 100. Davis was ook een succesvol acteur. Hij had zijn eigen 'The Mac Davis Show' op de televisie van 1974 tot 1976 en acteerde in films en televisieseries in de jaren zeventig, tachtig en negentig. Ook na de eeuwwisseling was Davis nog volop actief. Zijn laatste rol speelde hij in Dolly Parton's 'Heartstrings' in 2019. Mac Davis ruste in vrede!

BLOEMLEZING TOURNEE

Nu woensdag begint Stef in Vlaanderen aan een korte solotoer onder de titel BLOEMLEZING die door de corona maatregelen anders is dan anders. De publieksaantallen zijn beperkt en voor de liefhebbers is het een mogelijkheid om de zanger en liedschrijver intiemer dan ooit aan het werk te zien.
Verder is de zanger bezig met een bijzonder project voor de Nederlandse televisie dat eind oktober start. Een serie gesprekken met mensen aan de rand van de samenleving die uiteindelijk de inspiratie vormen voor een nieuwe song. Het programma onder naam SERENADE VAN STEF zal vanaf 30 oktober wekelijks te zien zijn op NPO 1.

Legendary pop icon Marty Wilde MBE is back, celebrating eight decades in music with a new album of fresh songs, interwoven with selected tracks from his past. Running Together, out 2 October, is a 15-track collection that features Marty’s two daughters, Roxanne Rizzo-Wilde and Brit award winning Kim Wilde, with input from son Ricky Wilde, who co-wrote three of the tracks; and The Wildcats.

Running Together is a vibrant contemporary collection, showcasing the outstanding songwriting aptitude of this musical icon. Diverse, eclectic and engaging, the album traverses music from the 50s, right through to the present moment, showcasing Running Together as a full-bodied family affair, with Marty and Roxanne bringing the tracks to life. A sound that’s bang up-to-date, but which tips its hat to the indulgent pop sounds of the past 70 years.  

“This is the album I’ve always wanted to write,” explains Marty. “There’s a fresh batch of new studio recordings that I’m really proud of, which I’ve mingled with some poignant songs of mine from across my career. These depict my journey over the decades, it’s a musical slice of mine and my family’s history. I recorded this album with my youngest daughter Roxanne, as I wanted her to perform the songs that needed that special woman's touch and were written especially for her.”

This live version of Juana Molina’s classic song “Eras” is a foretaste of the experimental pop maestro’s first live album, which comes out on Oct 23. Entitled ANRMAL, it was recorded in March 2020 at the NRMAL festival in Mexico, and contains rearranged renditions of tracks off her previous, acclaimed releases (the “Halo", "Wed 21" and "Un día" albums, as well as the “Forfun" EP).  

​De Argentijnse Juana Molina is de ongeëvenaarde meesteres van de mysterieuze, experimentele pop. Met pareltjes als ‘Wed 21’ (2013) en ‘Un Día’ (2008) liet ze zich al eerder opmerken. Na het uitbrengen van meesterwerk ‘Halo’ (2017) gaat iedereen overstag. “Unexpected brilliance”, kopt Mojo, “Endlessly bewitching”, volgens Mixmag en The Sunday Times bestempelt ‘Halo’ onomwonden als “an album veering on genius.” In 2019 laat Molina ‘ForFun’ op de wereld los, vier punkversies (!) van vroegere nummers. (een incident met zoek geraakte instrumenten - en een set op geleende instrumenten -  op Roskilde festival bracht op het idee om vier nummers te herwerken in diezelfde punky stijl. 
Ondertussen (in Maart '20, net voor de lockdown) nam ze ook eerste live-album op, dat op 23 oktober verschijnt, met als titel ANRMAL. 

'Rank', de nieuwe single van Kosmo Sound, is sinds vorige week te beluisteren op de digitale kanalen. De Gentse band werd eerder al omschreven als "Khruangbin met meer dub".
'Rank' is na 'Aunt Sister Lydia' de tweede single uit het debuutalbum van de groep. Producer van dienst was Koen Gisen. Full album 'Antenna' verschijnt op 6 november via Zephyrus Records.

Venues to Follow Strict Covid-19 Safety Guidelines for Artists, Audiences and Staff

September 28, 2020 – After much deliberation and preparation, the 45thAnnual International Jazzfestival Bern kicks off September 29, 2020 with live, in-person performances – featuring world-renowned artists Cyrille Aimée, Monty Alexander, Stanley Jordan, Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis and more – in Marian’s Jazzroom. Student bands are scheduled each week in the Jazz Tent.

Held in Hotel Innere Enge in Bern, Switzerland, the festival is practicing strict Covid-19 guidelines to help assure the safety and well being of artists, audiences and staff. All artists travelling to the festival will be screened for Covid-19 prior to their arrival at the hotel and quarantined in their rooms, except during performances. All guests and staff must wear masks and all seating meets proper social distancing standards.

“We are grateful to Jacques Pitteloud, Swiss Ambassador, and Leo Kalberer, Head Consul, Swiss Embassy in Washington, for their assistance in arranging performance documents allowing musicians to come to Bern under these special circumstances,” said Hans Zurbrügg, Founder/Producer, International Jazzfestival Bern. “Not only does the festival provide much-needed work for musicians, it also offers hope for a brighter future and shows the music industry a blueprint for another way to safely provide cultural entertainment for audiences.”

Hotel Innere Enge, located at Engestrasse 54 in the heart of Bern, has been home to Marian’s Jazzroom since 1992. Presenting world-class musicians in an inviting atmosphere, Marian’s has gained a reputation as one of the world’s leading Jazz clubs. Known as “The Jazz Hotel,” the elegant venue also boasts a Jazz Tent and musician-themed rooms, which pay homage to Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, Milt Hinton, George Wein, Louie Bellson, Lionel Hamilton, the Newport Jazz Festival and other Jazz greats.

“It is a unique opportunity during this world-wide crisis to be able to travel to work in another country and not be required to quarantine for two weeks,” said Zurbrügg. “We have the advantage of the hotel, which has everything the musicians need, including luxurious rooms, fine dining and a world-class club.”

Since most people have been sheltering in place for the past seven months, a major benefit will be the change in scenery. Zurbrügg says, “The bands will not be permitted to travel around our beautiful city to experience the cultural sights, shopping and other dining. Artists are aware of the individual travel risk during this challenging time; however, they are looking forward to playing the festival even with these special quarantine regulations.”

​A Motown artist’s album has been ranked as the greatest in music history. Rolling Stone just released its new list of the 500 greatest albums of all-time. Not only does a Motown artist top the list, but another Motown legend ranks in the top five.
Rolling Stone originally published its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. “No list is definitive, so we decided to remake it from scratch,” the music publication wrote on Twitter.
At number 1 is “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye. Released in 1971 on Motown’s subsidiary label Tamla, this album ranked number six on Rolling Stone’s top 500 list in 2003.
“Motown Records founder Berry Gordy initially resisted releasing “What’s Going On,” telling Gaye that he thought scatting was out of date and protest lyrics were too commercially risky,” Rolling Stone wrote about the album. “But when the song became an instant hit, Gordy gave Gaye a single month to craft an album to accompany “What’s Going On.” Gaye more than rose to the challenge.”
“What’s Going On” reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The album’s second single, “Mercy Mercy Me” peaked at number 4. “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” topped out at number 9. “Save The Children” peaked at number 41 in the U.K. and was not released as a single in the U.S.
“What emerged was soul music’s first concept album, and one of the most important and influential LPs ever made,” Rolling Stone added. “After “What’s Going On,” Black musicians at Motown and elsewhere felt a new freedom to push the musical and political boundaries of their art.”
Rolling Stone ranked “Pet Sounds” by The Beach Boys at number two, followed by Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” at number three. Motown’s Stevie Wonder comes in at number four with “Songs in the Key of Life." It featured hits “I Wish,” “Isn’t She Lovely" and “Sir Duke."
Rounding out the top 10 are The Beatles “Abbey Road," “Nevermind” by Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac’s, “Rumours," “Purple Rain” by Prince and the Revolution, Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” and Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
Other artists associated with Michigan in the top 100 are Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” at number 12, Aretha Franklin’s “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” at number 13, Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” at 34, Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall” at 36, Stevie Wonder’s “Talking Book” at 59, Aretha Franklin’s “Lady Soul” at 75 and The Stooges “Fun House” at 94.

​James Edward Winston Langwith, beter bekend als de Engelse muzikant en acteur Jimmy Winston, is gisteren op 75-jarige leeftijd overleden. Winston was de oorspronkelijke toetsenist van Small Faces en had eerder een tijdje onder de artiestennaam James Moody gewerkt. Als acteur was Winston onder andere in 1968 actief in de hippiemusical 'Hair' en in 1972 in de televisieserie 'Doctor Who'. Begin 1965 richtte Winston, samen met Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane en Kenney Jones, de band Small Faces op. Hij was gitarist, maar werd al snel toetsenist van Small Faces. Zijn ouders waren eigenaar van de pub 'Ruskin Arms' in Manor Park, waar Small Faces repeteerde en af en toe optrad. Na een optreden in The Cavern Club op Leicester Square zorgde een assistent van manager Don Arden ervoor dat de leden van Small Faces een contract met Decca Records tekenden. De debuutsingle 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It' haalde de veertiende plaats van de Britse Top 50. De opvolger 'I've Got Mine' flopte helaas. Kort daarna verliet Winston de groep en werd hij vervangen door Ian McLagan. Jimmy Winston ruste in vrede!

Precies vijftig jaar na het uiteenvallen van de Beatles zijn er tijdens een online veiling memorabilia van de legendarische Britse band te koop. Het Britse veilinghuis Sotheby's biedt items aan die de hele carrière van de popgroep bestrijken. Zo is er een gesigneerd exemplaar van de allereerste single van de zogenoemde Fab Four (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison en Ringo Starr), 'Love Me Do' uit 1962.

Het plaatje is getaxeerd op een bedrag tussen ruim 16.000 en bijna 22.000 euro. Ook gaat een van de kenmerkende brillen van John Lennon onder de veilinghamer. Een overzicht van alle straffen die Lennon op school kreeg als stoute puber is geschat op een waarde van zo'n 5500 euro.

Daarnaast is een Cartier-horloge van bandmanager Brian Epstein te koop. Het overlijden van de manager in 1967 heeft volgens kenners een belangrijke rol gespeeld bij het uit elkaar vallen van de legendarische band uit Liverpool.

​'Call Us When It’s Over' —het 6de studio album van Tiny Legs Tim— is een spontane uitbarsting van energie. Een ode aan het ‘samen muziek maken’ na drie maand muzikaal braakland tijdens de lockdown. We zullen de lente en de zomer van 2020 nooit vergeten. In maart werd de wereld getroffen door de Covid-19 pandemie.
Overal ter wereld gingen steden en landen in lockdown, werden bars en podia gesloten en verstomde elke vorm van livemuziek. Na drie maanden van totale isolatie —zonder jamsessies of optredens in Missy Sippy Blues & Roots Club in Gent of eender welke plaats— besloten Tiny Legs Tim en enkele vrienden eind juni een weekend door te brengen in de The Yellow Tape recording studio. Het doel: vastleggen van de emotionele ontlading en de energie van die eerste keer opnieuw samen spelen. Een eenvoudige live-opstelling, een 60’s Faylon mengtafel en een oude 24-track tapemachine werden gebruikt om deze uitbarsting van muzikale vreugde op te nemen. Tijdens het weekend bereikten Tim en zijn muzikanten de aanstekelijke flow
die ze al zo vaak mochten ervaren tijdens de nachtelijke jams in een volgepakte en stomende Missy Sippy. Vier muzikanten die tot één geheel versmelten in een energieke dans met het publiek, geleid door de zwoele beats van de drums (Bernd Coene), de dirty grooves van de bas (Mattias Geernaert) en de opzwepende dialoog van de gitaren (Toon Vlerick & Tiny Legs Tim). Op dit moment lijken dit soort scènes en zorgeloze uitbarstingen van levensvreugde iets uit een lang vervlogen tijd, maar zoals Tim het zegt: “We’re always ready to roll, call us when it’s over.” In afwachting van die betere tijden kan de luisteraar vanaf 27 november. Genieten van zes spontaan gearrangeerde songs die bol staan van positieve energie en spelplezier.

​Op 18 september presenteerde TUYS hun debuut EP. De nummers op deze EP bestaan ook als  vijfdelige video-serie "A Curtain Call for Dreamers". Het laatste deel van de reeks "Saturday Night"  komt er nu aan.

​The SAN GABRIEL 7 is a group that has been flying under the radar for far too long. The band has been gigging around Southern California since its inception in 2006 and is now releasing RED DRESS, their tenth album. CHRIS GORDON, the album’s producer, says, “The group has grown and changed over the years, and we felt it was time to bring our music to a larger audience outside of the region.” The musicians on RED DRESS each have a long list of professional credits playing with some of the biggest names in the music business. Their newest album features singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and voiceover actor FEMI KNIGHT, AKA Dawn Bishop. Knight is perhaps best known for her long association with Sergio Mendes. RED DRESS features seven songs composed by Knight and two live performances of Knight and the SG7 recorded at the Cal Tech Jazz Festival. There is real synergy between Dave Cushman’s fun and engaging arrangements and The San Gabriel 7, a high energy band of top-notch players. Knight has a smooth, flexible, and warm voice, and the music on RED DRESS is swinging and suffused with toe-tapping funkiness, aided and abetted by Knight’s intelligent, sensitive lyrics.

“People have been asking us to do a live concert video forever, for decades,” Shepherd explains. “We’ve been working so much focussing on studio recordings. But I’ve been hearing the call from the fans for many years now.” As live music has come to a standstill, the band wanted to give fans a taste once again of that experience, and this blistering set shows it to them in full force.

The Live! In Chicago album, the band’s only other live output, was released a decade ago and earned itself a Grammy nomination, but this time around you get to watch the band in its full glory, in addition to listening. Over the past 10 years, the multi-platinum selling artist has gone from strength to strength, winning countless awards, releasing four studio albums and touring the world over several times – from Brazil to Europe, India to Canada, US to Australia and beyond.

The band’s last studio album ‘The Traveler’ was released in May of last year, giving the band their eighth #1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. The performance captured on Straight To You: Live took place at the famous Leverkusen Jazzstage for the iconic German TV show, Rockpalast on November 25th, 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of The ‘Traveler World Tour.’

The seven-piece band took the stage and immediately launched into their most-recent hit-single “Woman Like You,” with the honey-soaked powerhouse voice of Noah Hunt blasting “I ain’t looking for a one time girl” backed by the fiery fretwork of Shepherd. It’s the first of four songs from The Traveler featured in the set. “The whole intention of this set-list is that we come out with a lot of energy, get the crowd pumped up. We want to get them energized right off the bat.” It slips into the soul-drenched blues of “Long Time Running,” with Chris Layton’s drums firing through the building horn section as Hunt and Shepherd lock-in on duel vocals, whilst blue and yellow lights spray the stage, catapulting you right to the front row of the audience.

“We were really fired up,” he continues. “We had expanded the band and brought in the horn section, it was their first time over to Europe with us. So we were glad to have the full ensemble there. It’s always exciting when we’re incorporating a new album into the live performance. Remembering the show, there were several stand out moments. The song off the new record “I Want You,” is a really extended version, and every soloist gets an opportunity to really shine, and everybody brought it 150%.”

The band never let up, and it’s in a live environment that Shepherd truly lets it rip. The five-time Grammy nominated guitarist has developed a formidable back catalogue that only someone with road-worn life experience can deliver, and this set is besieged with all of the classics. Shepherd prowls the stage on “Diamonds and Gold,” explodes into honkey-tonk revelry on the Elmore James cover “Talk To Me Baby,” and stuns with an 11-minute epic version of “The Heat of The Sun.” “On that the band is really focussed, everybody is listening to one another, everybody’s working collectively on the dynamics of the song, bringing it down, building it back up, trying to transcend what’s actually happening on stage and take the music to the next level.”

The band continues to shift up gears with a 9-minute version of “Shame Shame Shame,” a selection from Shepherd’s 1995 debut. “The reason why the song goes on the way that it does is because everybody is feeling it and there’s a lot of special moments that I’m proud of. Giving the keyboard and horn guys their moments to shine, and standing back and letting those guys do what they do best, made me feel just as proud as any solo that I played that night,” he enthuses.

While Kenny has had six #1 rock tracks and a slew of top ten songs, no show would be complete without the mega-hit “Blue on Black.” Featured on the band’s second album, the song spent an incredible 42 weeks on the US Billboard Rock Charts, winning Rock Track of the Year, and now has over 25 million streams. “That’s the song that we cannot not walk out onto the stage and play,” says Shepherd. “I’ve been playing that song for more than 20 years, and I still enjoy playing it. As a songwriter it’s the song that you hope you can write. It’s a timeless song that doesn’t really seem to age.  A year ago a new version of it came out with the Five Finger Death Punch guys, Brian May, myself and Brantley Gilbert. In the states it went to #1 on the rock charts again. As a songwriter, to have a #1 hit twice with the same song is really rare, and certainly something to be proud of.” The new version of the song has received more than 80 million streams so far.

Talking about not being able to perform live during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shepherd says; “I miss it. Live concert performances are the essence of what we do best. So, not having that in our life is yeah, this has been an eye-opening experience I think for all musicians. It’s been a personal loss for every performer out there who does what we do. A lot of our lives have been spent pouring our heart and soul into that.”
The release of Straight To You comes at a time when there is no live music and the world looks very different than it did 12 months ago, but as you watch the seven-piece Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band bow out on a phenomenal finale of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and wave goodbye to the cheering Leverkusen crowd, it reignites the love of live music and the hope that is still to come.

​Na drie eerdere niet verzilverde nominaties is de prestigieuze Mercury Prize dit jaar eindelijk voor ‘Home Again’-zanger Michael Kiwanuka (33). Dat melden Britse media donderdagavond. De muzikant kreeg de prijs tijdens The One Show van radio-dj Annie Mac.“Het is een droom die uitkomt. Dit is alles wat ik ooit in mijn leven heb gewild”, zei Michael na het winnen van de befaamde prijs. “Het is geweldig, het is ridicuul en gek. Ik ben zo blij, ik heb m’n derde album uitgebracht en het is echt een prachtig moment om te winnen. Ik wil graag doorgaan met muziek maken en mensen verbinden en hun leven zo net een beetje beter maken.”

De Mercury Prize is een van de beroemdste en meest gewaardeerde muziekprijzen van Groot-Brittannië en wordt alom gezien als het startschot van een glorieuze carrière. Michael (33) krijgt daarbovenop ook nog eens een cashbedrag van 25.000 pond (27.000 euro). Op 2 oktober 2020 brengt de Nederlandse band Templo Diez hun langverwachte nieuwe album ‘Starlight’ uit. Het album neemt je mee op reis langs een tiental nummers in de kenmerkende warme en filmische Templo Diez stijl. ​

De band werkte vijf jaar aan ‘Starlight’, een lange periode waar veel gebeurde op privé-gebied en persoonlijke ontwikkelingen. De eerste single van ‘Starlight’ is de track ‘Sound Of Waves’. Templo Diez zanger en gitarist Pascal Hallibert schreef ‘Sound Of Waves’ voor zijn dochter; het liedje gaat over het wonder van onschuld en de breekbare wijsheid die daarmee samengaat.

De video is gemaakt door Stift, een collectief jonge film- en videomakers uit Arnhem. Zij lichten graag toe hoe de prachtige video tot stand is gekomen: "Templo Diez werkt eigenlijk hetzelfde als wij: hun muziek is filmisch en verhalend, een prachtige combinatie. De manier waarop de band in hun teksten tijd en reflectie gebruiken, inspireerde ons om deze videoclip te maken. Naast onze eigen interpretatie van het nummer, werd ons verteld dat dit nummer is geschreven voor de dochter van de zanger. Dit inspireerde ons nog meer om dit verhaal over een dochter, tijd en reflectie te maken.”
Stift maakte eerder videoclips voor Steffen Morrison, Shirma Rouse, Ben Forte en Point Quiet.

Stephen Britt is a singer-songwriter from Asheville, North Carolina. His band, Ugly Runner, put out their debut EP, “Romanticizer,” with Cleopatra Records in January, 2020. It was aggressive and raw, with little room for sorrow or sentiment. The band parted ways during quarantine, and in late July of 2020, Stephen enrolled in school at Full Sail University to pursue a BFA in Creative Writing. Taking a break from music didn’t last long. He began working on what would become his debut solo album, “Bite A Lemon” on August 8th. He wanted to touch on all the aspects of rock and roll that have inspired him throughout his life as an aspiring songwriter. With ”Bite A Lemon,” you get the familiar raw, aggressive, unpolished rock and roll, but it doesn’t end there. The record is laden with acoustic guitar, vocal harmonies, and relaxation, but it never loses the soul of rock and roll. With that, Stephen Britt presents an album that from start-to-finish should have something for everyone.
 
“Bite A Lemon” was written and recorded at Stephen Britt’s home in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 8th to September 8th, 2020. The album was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Stephen himself, and while it might show at times, it’s exactly what he was going for. Stephen’s friend, roommate, and local musician, Garett Hatch, is featured on various tracks throughout the 38-minute album playing bass or guitar. Stephen also had his friend and local musician, Ben Survant (Natural Born Leaders), lay down a saxophone solo in the opening track, “Elevator Toe Jam” to kick off the album, and he shows up again in the upbeat soul track, “Left The Party.” 
 
Says Stephen, “Going into the quarantine of 2020, I wanted to create an album with intent. No filler. Of course, that’s the plan with every release, but to really sit down and trim the fat is something I’ve never done. It’s also not something you were able to do in the pre-COVID days, where you go into a studio, record everything you’ve prepared and that’s what you put out. It was nice to be able to sit with the material as I made it, and really create an intentional collection of what I considered the most timeless 12 songs I could write at the moment. I believe the intent of ‘Bite A Lemon’ is to not only be an outlet for me to say some things I’ve wanted to say, but also to pay tribute to the history of rock and roll with an eclectic blend of (hopefully) timeless rock and roll songs. 
 
“My friend and roommate, Garett Hatch, had just released a solo album in August, 2020 (‘A Place With No Name’). I really enjoyed it, and thought I would give it a shot. I didn’t want to use any of my older songs. I really just wanted to write and record an album within a month. At some point during this process, Garett heard a demo version of a song I wrote at the beginning of quarantine called ‘Bite A Lemon’ and demanded it go on the album. It’s the only song from the record not written between August 8th and September 8th, and it’s funny how I considered this track only a ‘throwaway’ back in March and now it’s the title track to the record.”
 
To support the new release Stephen is currently working on a video for the track “Imaginary World” which he aims to release by the middle of October. He’s still figuring out the live production of “Bite A Lemon,” but with the talent of his friends in the Asheville area, it will surely be a lot of fun!
 
In closing Stephen has this to impart, “I know there’s a message I want people to take away from ‘Bite A Lemon,’ but I think I’m still trying to figure out what it means to me. The one thing I know is that it’s as honest as I could be without being too on-the-nose. The entire process was a whirlwind of guitars on porches, too many cigarettes, and not enough sleeping. I hope by the end of the album people love rock and roll a little bit more than they did before.”

On October 9th, 2020, Lennon’s 80th birthday, in celebration of his remarkable life, a collection of some of the most vital and best loved songs from his solo career will be released via Capitol/UMe as a suite of beautifully presented collections, titled GIMME SOME TRUTH. THE ULTIMATE MIXES.

Executive Produced by Yoko Ono Lennon and Produced by Sean Ono Lennon, these thirty-six songs, handpicked by Yoko and Sean, have all been completely remixed from scratch, radically upgrading their sonic quality and presenting them as a never-before-heard Ultimate Listening Experience.

Mixed and engineered by multi GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Paul Hicks, who also helmed the mixes for 2018’s universally acclaimed Imagine – The Ultimate Collection series, with assistance by engineer Sam Gannon who also worked on that release, the songs were completely remixed from scratch, using brand new transfers of the original multi-tracks, cleaned up to the highest possible sonic quality. After weeks of painstaking preparation, the final mixes and effects were completed using only vintage analog equipment and effects at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, and then mastered in analog at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Wharton in order to ensure the most beautiful and authentic sound quality possible.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. – named for Lennon’s 1971 excoriating rebuke of deceptive politicians, hypocrisy and war, a sentiment as relevant as ever in our post-truth era of fake news, will be available in a variety of formats including as a Deluxe Edition Box Set that offers several different ways to listen to this engrossing 36-track collection with stunning new mixes across two CDs alongside a Blu-ray audio disc containing the Ultimate Mixes in Studio Quality 24 bit/96 kHz HD Stereo, immersive 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos.

“John was a brilliant man with a great sense of humour and understanding,” writes Yoko Ono Lennon in the preface of the book included in the Deluxe Edition. “He believed in being truthful and that the power of the people will change the world. And it will. All of us have the responsibility to visualize a better world for ourselves and our children. The truth is what we create. It’s in our hands.”

The 124-page book included in the Deluxe Edition has been designed and edited by Simon Hilton, the Compilation Producer and Production Manager of the Ultimate Collection series. The book tells the story of all thirty-six songs in John & Yoko’s words and the words of those who worked alongside them, through archival and brand-new interviews, accompanied by hundreds of previously unseen photographs, Polaroids, movie still frames, letters, lyric sheets, tape boxes, artworks and memorabilia from the Lennon-Ono archives.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. will also be released as a 19-track CD or 2LP, a 36-track 2CD or 4 LP, and several digital versions for download and streaming including in 24 bit/96 kHz audio and hi-res Dolby Atmos. The vinyl was cut by mastering engineer Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios. The Deluxe Edition and 4LP formats will include a GIMME SOME TRUTH. bumper sticker, a two-sided poster of Lennon printed in black and white with silver and gold metallics, and two postcards, one of which is a replica of Lennon’s letter to the Queen of England in 1969 when he returned his MBE in “protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigerian-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and Cold Turkey slipping down the charts.” The 2LP and 2CD will also include the poster and all versions will come with a booklet filled with photos and the MBE letter.

The album cover features a rarely-seen striking black and white profile portrait of John Lennon, taken on the day John returned his MBE. The album cover, CD and LP booklets and typographic artworks were designed by Jonathan Barnbrook who created the covers for David Bowie’s albums Heathen, Reality and The Next Day and won a GRAMMY® Award for the packaging of Bowie’s Black Star album.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. traces the arc of Lennon’s post-Beatles life and career, bringing together songs from all of his revered solo albums including John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), Some Time In New York City (1972), Mind Games (1973), Walls and Bridges (1974), Rock ‘n’ Roll (1975), Double Fantasy (1980) and 1984’s posthumous Milk and Honey. The collection is bookended with his early non-album singles, kicking off with the one-two punch of “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On),” Lennon’s exuberant exhortation about the karmic forces of action/reaction and equality (“we all shine on like the moon and the stars and the sun”), and the electrifying addiction-themed “Cold Turkey,” and culminating with the holiday classic “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and the anti-war protest anthem “Give Peace A Chance,” with its ubiquitous, titular call to action: “All we are saying is Give Peace A Chance.”

Sequenced in chronological order by album they were released on, songs on the 36-track version include all of Lennon’s biggest hits and showcase his thoughts, beliefs and convictions about everything from peace (“Imagine,” “Give Peace A Chance,” “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”), religion (“God”), politics (“Power To The People,” “Working Class Hero”), lying politicians (“Gimme Some Truth”), racism (“Angela”), equality (“Woman”), love and marriage (“Love,” “Oh Yoko!,” “Dear Yoko,” “Mind Games,” “Out The Blue,” “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him,” “Grow Old With Me”), fatherhood (“Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)”), loneliness (“Isolation”) and much more. ​Eagle Vision proudly presents the first in-depth film biography of iconic musician Ronnie Wood with the release of Somebody Up There Likes Me. An official selection at both the BFI London Film Festival 2019 and Tribeca Film Festival 2020, the film by acclaimed director Mike Figgis will be released on DVD, blu-ray, digital and deluxe hardback book on October 9th.

As an artist, musician, producer and author, Ronnie Wood has made countless contributions to the cultural zeitgeist. Yet, there is so much more to know about the man himself. This intimate portrait traces the many lives and careers of one of the most important guitarists in music, capturing what it means to be a rock ‘n’ roll icon.
 
Somebody Up There Likes Me traces Wood’s 50-year musical history, from The Birds, The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces (with Rod Stewart), and The New Barbarians, to becoming a permanent member of The Rolling Stones. Additionally, Mike Figgis captures Wood’s charismatic warmth, energy and honesty as he speaks openly about his battles with drink and drugs.  The film takes its title from a conversation with Wood about surviving his chronic smoking habit: “When they operated on my cancer, they took away my emphysema. They said my lungs were as if I’d never smoked. I thought: ‘How’s that for a Get Out Of Jail Free card?’ Somebody up there likes me, and somebody down here likes me too.” 
 
The documentary features brand new interviews with Wood’s Rolling Stones bandmates Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts, as well as his Faces bandmate, Rod Stewart. Other interviewees include Wood’s wife Sally Wood, singer Imelda May and artist Damien Hirst, alongside both present-day performances and archive footage from Wood's stellar multi-band career.
 
These interviews and performance segments blend with footage of Wood playing guitar and harmonica (a reminder of his talents as a versatile instrumentalist), as well as quiet, personal moments while he paints in his studio. It climaxes with Wood giving a beautiful, intimate performance of “Breathe On Me” from his 1975 solo album New Look.
 
The DVD, blu-ray and deluxe formats all feature bonus performances by Ronnie, plus two mini-features. The deluxe is a special limited edition 40-page hardback book featuring pictures, paintings and annotations by Ronnie which are exclusive to this format. It also features an exclusive essay by Paul Sexton, with DVD and blu-ray of the documentary.
 
Somebody Up There Likes Me is a fresh look at Ronnie Wood – a rewarding and compelling insight into one of music’s most likeable, successful and complex key players.
 
Ronnie describes the film as summing up “the essence of survival” in a life he continues to live to the fullest, without regrets, “I wouldn’t change anything except I’d do it with my eyes open a bit more,” he says, “I was in the hands of destiny all my life…and being in the right place at the right time”.

De Franse zangeres Juliette Gréco is op 93-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft haar familie laten weten aan persbureau AFP. Bekende liedjes van haar zijn ‘Déshabillez-moi’ en ’Je suis comme je suis. Ze kreeg ook beroemdheid door haar rol in de televisieserie ‘Belphégor ou le Fantôme du Louvre’.

“Juliette Gréco is woensdag 23 september 2020 gestorven, omringd door haar dierbaren in haar zo geliefde woning in Ramatuelle. Zij heeft een buitengewoon leven geleid”, klonk het in een reactie van de familie.

De zangeres werd op 7 februari 1927 geboren als dochter van een Corsicaanse vader en een moeder uit Bordeaux. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog raakte ze bij het verzet betrokken. Ze werd door de Gestapo opgepakt, maar kwam vanwege haar jonge leeftijd maanden later alsnog vrij. Later belandde ze in de intellectuele en bohemien kringen van Parijs en was ze bijvoorbeeld bevriend met filosoof Jean-Paul Sartre. De grande dame van het Franse chanson had ook een jarenlange relatie met de Amerikaanse trompettist Miles Davis.

Prestigieuze onderscheidingenIn 1949 begon Gréco te zingen in het Parijse cabaret Le Boeuf sur le Toit, waarbij ze werk van bekende Franse schrijvers vertolkte. Haar zangcarrière nam sindsdien een vliegende start. Gréco vertolkte liedjes, geschreven door onder meer Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg, Boris Vian én Jacques Brel (waaronder ‘Ne me quitte pas’).

Ze zong niet alleen in Frankrijk, maar bijvoorbeeld ook in New York waar ze veel succes kende. Gréco acteerde ook in een hele reeks films en in 1965 speelde ze een rol in de televisieserie ‘Belphégor ou le Fantôme du Louvre’. De zangeres/actrice was drie keer getrouwd en kreeg enkele prestigieuze onderscheidingen. Haar precieze doodsoorzaak is niet bekend. In 2016 was de zangeres al een tijdje buiten strijd nadat ze een beroerte kreeg.
