A post office in Jimi Hendrix‘s hometown will be named after the musical icon, it has been announced. Last month (November 28), it was reported that Congress in the US were voting on the re-naming decision after Rep. Adam Smith proposed the idea to designate a post office in Renton, Washington the ‘James Marshall Jimi Hendrix Post Office Building’ in July. The building, located at 4301 Northeast 4th Street, is on the same street where Hendrix grew up and close to the Greenwood Memorial Park where Hendrix is also buried. Washington’s eight representatives in Congress all voted for the post office to be named in Hendrix’s honour, with the motion passed by the House Committee last week. When announcing the bill in summer, Smith said it would be “one more way we can celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest musicians of our time and the importance of the south Seattle and Renton areas in his enduring legacy.

Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor, keyboardist and vocalist in Walk Off the Earth, has died, the band has confirmed.
The group posted the following statement on social media Sunday night (Dec. 30): "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and band member, Mike 'Beard Guy' Taylor. Mike had a love for life that was unmatched and a willingness to give that went beyond ordinary means. He passed peacefully from natural causes last night in his sleep. Our deepest sympathies are with his two children, whom he adored more than anything else in the world. We ask for privacy for his family in this trying time." The Canadian indie pop band, known for their well-crafted cover songs on YouTube as well as originals including recent single "Fifth Avenue," was scheduled to perform on New Year's Eve in Niagara Falls for CBC. "I’ve trained quite hard at being a keyboard player since I was four years old, worked my lifetime trying to get my chops up at the highest level I can," Taylor said in an interview in 2012, when the group's cover of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" went viral. Just before Christmas, Taylor shared his beautiful solo piano rendition of "O Holy Night" on Facebook, where he said it was "hands down my favorite Christmas song." "Jazz is a music that I have come to love since I started playing it as a sixth grader, but as I have grown older I have come to understand it’s limitations. One example of these limitations is how jazz pianists usually play chord changes in the left hand and melodies in the right hand, ignoring many of the instrument’s possibilities. Through the study of many of Chopin’s solo piano works—which use the full instrument in extraordinary ways—I created The Lonely Sailor by blending classical textures with jazz vocabulary, thus expanding the concept of jazz."
-James Fernando James Fernando’s musical journey began when he started playing classical piano at the age of five. He was first exposed to jazz in middle school and quickly fell in love with the genre, working relentlessly to develop his skills. While in high school, James received awards from both Downbeat Magazineand the National Young Arts Foundation and was nominated for the Jazz Fellowship Awards of the American Pianists Association. He was also selected for the prestigious Jazz Band of America, as well as the Berklee Summer Jazz Workshop, placing him firmly among the elite musicians of his age group. James attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship, where he graduated summa cum laude after only three years of study. Shortly after graduating, James went on tour with legendary saxophonist Chris Cheek (Paul Motion, Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell). Highlights from that tour include performances at the Regattabar in Boston and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center in New York City. After returning from that tour, he attended the historic Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music. It was at this workshop he met Toronto-based vocalist and composer Mingjia Chen, with whom he recorded and released his debut album Extended Layover. James is set to release his first solo album, entitled The Lonely Sailor, in February of 2019. Along with performing and composing, James is a passionate teacher. He strives to challenge all of his students by using their favorite music as a tool for education. Central to my artistry is the concept of expansion. Jazz is a music that I have come to love since I started playing it as a sixth grader, but as I have grown older I have come to understand it’s limitations. One example of these limitations is how jazz pianists usually play chord changes in the left hand and melodies in the right hand, ignoring many of the instrument’s possibilities. Through the study of many of Chopin’s solo piano works—which use the full instrument in extraordinary ways—I created The Lonely Sailor by blending classical textures with jazz vocabulary, thus expanding the concept of jazz. I also expanded the sound of the piano itself by using what I call the electronically augmented piano. To accomplish this, I placed contact microphones on the piano and ran the sound through my computer while controlling the software with a foot pedal. The effect is that the acoustic piano is always audible, but there are electronic elements that enter and exit throughout the course of the album. All of this expansion occurs while telling the story of personal growth. The album is about a man sailing through the sea. As he progresses through his journey, the soundscape changes from purely acoustic to almost entirely electronic, reflecting the development in his voyage. He is currently co-founder and artistic director of the BSBI Jazz Festival in Manchester, CT. Ben Goldman is a dynamic and versatile percussionist and music educator. In 2017, Ben was a guest artist and teacher at the Tefen Music Festival in Israel, where Ben performed with the Faculty Jazz combo and led steel drum masterclasses. When not performing as an associate artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass, Ben maintains an active and diverse performance schedule in Philadelphia playing drumset, timpani, and steel drums. As an educator, Ben has built a studio of 30 private students and is the instructor of percussion and drumset at Cecil College in Maryland. Ben holds an MM from University of Delaware and a BFA in multi-focus percussion performance from California Institute of the Arts.

Hij houdt van allerlei muziek, maar vindt het vooral leuk om weer thuis te komen, terug naar de roots. Sinds zijn eerste album “Water” in 2010 uitkwam, kent de man succes. Ondanks het feit dat Porter nu veel meer succes heeft dan vroeger, kiest hij niet altijd voor grote bigbands, maar durft hij ook voor kleinere en dynamische bezettingen te gaan. Torgeir Waldemar verraste met zijn debuutalbum in 2014. Op zijn 40e bracht hij een akoestisch meesterwerk uit dat klonk alsof het rechtstreeks uit de oefenruimte kwam van een jonge troubadour van Laurel Canyon in de jaren zeventig (denk aan Neil Young, Gene Clark en Gram Parsons). December 2018 : The Perfect Year Lynda leerde elektrisch orgel spelen toen ze zeven jaar was en dat betekende de start van een boeiende muziekcarrière. De eerste professionele stappen zette Lynda op twaalfjarige leeftijd met weekendoptredens en plaatselijke talentenjachten, die meestal succesvol gewonnen werden. Maar drie jaar later kwam plots alles in een stroomversnelling terecht. Haar carrière begon met het winnen van het talentenprogramma "Sky Star Search" dat over de hele wereld werd uitgezonden door televisiezender Sky TV. Lynda werd vanaf dat moment gevraagd voor optredens in betere etablissmenten als ondersteuning voor bekende artiesten : Edwin Starr, Jimmy James, The Drifters, George McCrae, Tony Christie, Showaddywaddy, The Searchers,... A child of the Depression, she began playing piano around the age of four when her parents invited two music teachers, who had fallen on hard times, to live with their family. Although it was a difficult era for most, that turn of events led to a lifelong career in music that is going as strong as ever today.
Besides performing regularly around Los Angeles to packed houses, Bryant is releasing PROJECT 88, her ninth CD. The title is a double entendre, since the piano has 88 keys and Bryant turned 88 a year ago. The CD features a mix of standards and originals penned by Bryant. PROJECT 88 was produced by Bryant’s close friend, ROBERT KYLE. The two have been friends for 30 years, and Kyle has either produced or co-produced most of her CDs. A saxophonist and flutist, Kyle is a mainstay on the Los Angeles jazz scene and a touring and recording artist who has worked with many top names in both the jazz and pop worlds, including Natalie Cole, Della Reese, Francisco Aguabella, Michael McDonald, Johnny Mathis, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Kenny Loggins, Lou Rawls, and Christina Aguilera, to name just a few. Kyle assembled a top-notch band for this project including bass player TOM GARGANO, who has played on all of Bryant’s previous releases. Kyle and Bryant wanted to create different sounds and styles for the CD, so they switched around the rhythm section as appropriate. Gargano plays on five of the tunes, while RICHARD SIMON plays bass on three and HUSSAIN JIFFRY plays electric bass on two numbers. Kyle also brought on board three different drummers for this outing: JAMES GADSON, QUENTIN DENNARD SR., AND KENNY ELLIOTT as well as Brazilian percussionist CASSIO DUARTE. Kyle also plays tenor and flute on several tunes, and renowned Brazilian guitarist KLEBER JORGE, who has a very busy touring schedule but was in town when Bryant was in the studio, appears on one tune. Each player has their own, unique style that added different and exciting textures to these performances. Bryant sometimes plays solo or duo, but prefers to play in trio or quartet settings, so the addition of a horn section with Kyle -- TONY GUERRERO on trumpet (who also contributed the horn arrangements), RYAN DRAGON on trombone, JEFF DRISKILL on alto sax, and JAY MASON on bari sax – was thrilling for her. Due to the tremendous response UK prog ensemble The Gardening Club received for the reissue of their 1983 self-titled album last year, the band has released a brand new album! The new Gardening Club album, “The Riddle” was recorded at producer/guitarist Norm Macpherson's Garry Oak Studios in Metchosin British Columbia. This location surrounded by forest and close to the Pacific Ocean, was ideal for writing and recording the new record.
Martin Springett and Norm had known each other as young players while living in Victoria many years ago, both were drawn to the music the other was making; Norm was a phenomenal blues player even at the age of 17. Martin as a new immigrant from England, was setting Tolkien's words to music. Two very different worlds! The connection that started the new project, was a mutual friend, a poet named Cyril McColgan. Martin had been setting Cyril's poems to music for many years, and so after meeting up again, Norm and Martin decided it would be fun to 'do something' together, and Cyril's words were the connection for them both, and a starting point for recording together. There was no thought of an album, just an exploration of Martin's songs, old and new, with Cyril's words. The tale grew in the telling, to quote somebody or other, and when Gonzo Multimedia re-released the original “Gardening Club” album from 1983 in October of 2017, this inspired the recording sessions with a new hope that perhaps Gonzo might well be interested in this new Gardening Club project. The shape of the album grew and changed as players appeared, miraculously you might say, that seemed to be a perfect fit for Martin's music. Norm's son, James MacPherson brought in his phenomenal drum programming skills, as well as some very effective synth solos. Sean Drabitt, a highly respected jazz bassist, came in with fretless electric bass, to provide a unique underpinning to the songs, Sean's first love being bands like Rush and King Crimson. Wayne Kozak, with a wealth of studio experience over the decades, provided beautiful soprano sax solos. Finally, Norm Macpherson, an award winning guitarist gave the album it's 'second voice', after Martin's heartfelt vocals, his signature soaring, slide guitar. Norm also produced and engineered the album, giving it a shape and focus sound wise that again complemented Martin’s songs perfectly. The art that Martin Springett created for the album was actually a compilation of images created over a year prior to the recording. Inspired by the very positive reaction to his Gardening Club album's re-release, Martin explored as many aspects of The Garden as he could, and The Three Riddles came out of this fertile creative period. The 24 page illustrated lyric booklet that accompanies “The Riddle”, was the next visual challenge. Martin has always felt that the link between the visual and the musical exemplified the best of the Prog rock releases of his youth, and wished to emulate that particular specific synergy with “The Riddle”. The band is deep in the recording of the next Gardening Cub album, “Boy On A Bike”. All the songs are written, two thirds of the album recorded. This a very different experience to “The Riddle”, where the band was learning to work together. In the new one, Norm and Martin can afford to experiment just a little more, the songs are all connected together sonically, making this something of a rock concerto. The same team has assembled plus some very cool guests, which of course changes things yet again. Martin will be putting together videos with his art and music from “The Riddle” very soon, as well as for “Boy On A Bike”. In closing Martin has this to impart, “Life is full of beautiful melancholy, moody mysteries, shadows and light, grand gestures, tiny life changing moments, exploding super novas, cosmic light shows, stalled cars, love, seven year old poets, thoughts on surviving heart surgery, an homage to a brilliant female artist, the original sleep; you know the usual stuff.” The Gardening Club features: SEAN DRABITT - FRETLESS ELECTRIC BASS - Sean Drabitt left Victoria, Canada, in early 90's to study Jazz bass in Los Angeles with mentor John Clayton. The next decade he spent first in New Orleans, where he worked with all members of the Marsalis family, then in New York, working with the best young players on the modern jazz scene, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Eric Harland and Ari Honig among them. Specializing in a hard driving hard bop informed style of bass playing. At home in any genre of music, his improvisations are intense and melodic explorations that add immeasurably to any song he is asked to play on. Wayne ran his own studio for many years in Vancouver, Wayne Kozak Audio Productions, involved in music production, advertising jingles and soundtracks. JAMES MACPHERSON - James began playing different instruments when he was very young, including woodwinds in a variety of orchestras, then went on to play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards in many bands. Teaching these instruments professionally, he also became involved with audio production, recording and producing albums for local bands. James brings a fresh and young energy to the music that has become an essential ingredient in The Gardening Club sound. NORM MACPHERSON - Victoria (BC) Canada Music Hall Of Fame Inductee 2010 / Lifetime Achievement Award. Norm’s reputation as an outstanding guitarist began with his lead playing in local Victoria bands like Blues By Five and Moxie. His recording and touring credits include The Poppy Family (Terry and Susan Jacks) Skylark (with founding member producer David Foster), Burton Cummings, Roy Forbes, Connie Kaldor, The Sample Stearns Band and many years with Canadian troubadour, Valdy. He recorded his first album in 1969, settings of JRR Tolkien's poems. The album was never released, but this experience set Martin on a path to combine his art and music as one effective statement. The early days of the progressive rock movement were a huge influence, especially the combined effect of art and music, as in Roger Dean's covers for Yes. “The Gardening Club” LP, originally released in 1983, now considered a 'lost prog classic' by some, was the first mature linking of his art and music.
