​Western North Carolina singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe is a survivor. Recently he overcame cancer, canned his 18th album, an album that is colored with his brilliant and expressive musicality. Shortly after his diagnosis in 2022, he and Jared Tyler decided to record these songs. And that is exciting and rough earthy folk music and a good portion of countryblues.

​The second artist who can count on a '10 inch vinyl Rhythm Bomb Records 20th Anniversary Edition' release is Ruby Ann. This Portuguese artist performed in the clubs as an upcoming talent. After that, she stayed under the radar. She went out into the world and tried to survive singing on small stages. She already had talent then, but it was until she recorded the album 'Mama's Back' together with Cherry Casino and his musicians in 2010 and 2011 that the general public could enjoy it. Fortunately, due to the 20th anniversary of the Rhythm Bomb Records label, this album is once again getting the necessary attention. Because that's what Ruby Ann deserves. However, you can hardly put them in one musical box, because she is too versatile for that. She immediately shows that on 'Call His Name', with which she kicks off. A rhythm & blues class of stature and pay particular attention to that powerful voice. Rockabilly-wise she continues with 'No I Won't Cry', including beautiful guitar work. The raw undertone in her voice in 'Mad Mama' brings out the 'real rockin' chick' in her. With a voice drenched in echo, she later rocks herself with verve through 'Your Mama's Here'.
Side 2 starts with 'Baby Don't Care' that certainly exudes the Sun atmosphere and once again shows that Ruby Ann breathes pure rock and roll. Rockabilly then comes once again to the surface in "I'll Never Get Rich". For a moment she slows down a little bit in the somewhat poppy sounding 'I've Heard That Line Before', but on closing track 'Many Tears Ago' she pulls out all the stops again.
More than 10 years after its release, ‘Mama’s Back’ still has the power of rock 'n' roll and rockabilly.

​Detroit radio formed the soundtrack of Emm’s life and career and her brand new record is a celebration of that music. From Motown,jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. 

​The Rhythm Bomb Records label celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. An anniversary that gets even more shine with the release of some 10 inch '20th anniversary edition' vinyls.
'Let's Play Around!' by Cherry Casino and The Gamblers' is one of them. In 2006, this German band managed to connect with contemporary bands that embrace traditional rhythm & blues with this album, which was only released on CD. 'Let's Play Around!' received very good reviews and as it turns out, the album has not lost any of its power so many years later. Cherry Casino and The Gamblers have now become a permanent value. Rhythm Bomb’s Records’ boss Ralph Braband therefore thought it appropriate to release these historic recordings for the first time on vinyl on the occasion of the anniversary of his label. A decision that gives us, together with the fans of the band, great pleasure.
When listening, it immediately becomes clear that the band already radiated an enormous dose of professionalism in 2005. Cherry Casino (voc., gtr), Ike Stoye (sax), Michael 'Humpty' Kirscht (rhythm gtr), Torsten Peukert (drums) and 'Lucky' Lehmann (bass) ensure that. This immediately manifests itself in the raw, returning to the essence of rhythm & blues 'Huh Baby'. With 'Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down' the band presents a more rocking version of the genre.  Cherry and his mates work their way swinging through 'You're Too High For Me', which also boasts great backing vocals from the band members. And side two also opens in the same way with 'Baby Please Come Back'. Unadulterated rock 'n' roll typifies 'All Night Long'. A somewhat Chuck Berry-like intro later puts 'Girl Next Door' on the rocking tracks. Song that also boasts sublime sax and guitar solos.
Cherry Casino and The Gamblers know the authentic rhythm & blues and the rocking version of it in detail. Their craftsmanship, coupled with a dynamic performance, also make 'Let's Play Around' an extremely danceable record.

​During their fourth Canadian trip, compiler Mark Armstrong and designer and artist Henrique San once again search for recordings by local heroes on labels such as Apex, Canatal, Delta, Sparton and Quality. These are supplemented by imported records that performed extremely well in that country. Again you get 28 songs, all recorded between 1952 and 1963.
Let's start right away with the oldest recording. That's ‘Don't Hang Around Me Anymore’ by Hank Snow, a song that creates a great country atmosphere with the addition of steel guitar. That atmosphere also characterizes 'Party Doll' by Luke Simmons and Jack Turner's 'Everybody's Rockin' But Me’. The Canadian Vanda Jackson, however, may kick off with the rocking 'Ooh Watcha Do!'. More female talent comes later with Penny Candy and the somewhat poppy 'Came On Over'. Small or meaningless titles were common in the 1950s. One of them is ‘Bop-A-Dee, Bop-A-Doo’ by Hall Willis. Willis initially started out as a country artist, but with this pure rockabilly song he was certainly able to reach the same level as his American colleagues. Energetic number! Paul Anka had many hits worldwide. Before he got that far, however, he already made this 'Blau-Wile-Deveest-Fontaine' in 1956, at the age of 15. You can also hear him with 'Late Last Night', recorded 3 years later. And yet Anka had to lose at the time during an amateur singing contest. Sixteen-year-old Bob King won the first price and you can hear him here with 'Rockin' Jukebox'. In the 1960s, R. Dean Taylor scored several hits here. However, the rocking 'At The High School Dance' from 1961 did not reach us. A shame, because it is a formidable number. Marty Hill and Bill Ramal teamed up for the title track 'Red Lips'. In addition to being a singer/songwriter and producer, Hill was also a guitarist. Ramal was a professionally trained saxophonist. The result is an exciting song with beautiful orchestral accompaniment. This also applies to the later 'Mr. Oracle of love". For a rather tearing sax you can go to The Sugar Canes with the instrumental 'Sioux Rock'. Saxophonist was Ray Felder. He also worked with Wynonie Harris, Bull Moose Jackson and James Brown, among others. Also at this volume, a French song should not be missing, Rudy Asselin does that job with 'En Avant Le Rock 'n Roll', on which the accordion is of course also present.
Also worth mentioning are the rhythm & blues of Eugene Church in 'Miami', the famous Dale Hawkins with 'Mrs. Merguitory's Daughter', of course Little Richard and his wildly rocking 'Keep A Knockin'' and the sweet harmony vocals of girl group The Valentines with 'The Sock'.
It has become a tradition that the 'Rockin' Rollin' USA' series features only high quality rockers. We are already curious what the Armstrong/San duo still have in the pipeline.

​'Soul Steps' is the second album by Berlin and San Diego based band The Everettes, who have been an insider tip in the soul landscape for a few years now. On the one hand, the title alludes to the musical footprints they follow, as their danceable music is rooted in Northern Soul, Stax and Motown and with their three female singers they carry the magic of the 60s girl groups into the present.

​Lady J Huston is a well-decorated though sparsely recorded woman who sings, writes, plays trumpet and flugelhorn, arranges, and produces. Her debut full length studio album, ‘Groove Me Baby,’ is a reflection of all that Huston is (singer, songwriter, trumpeter, music director, arranger, and producer) and has accomplished in her career that began as a child dancer on shows with her mother Loyce Huston and led to an array of awards and high-profile appearances.

​Giles Robson's five track EP, all original songs, was recorded in France during a recent tour featuring some of the country's most acclaimed musicians. It features pianist Philippe LeJeune and Paris born guitarist Franck Goldwasser, who has worked with some of the USA’s most highly regarded blues artists after moving to California in the early eighties. The bass and drums are provided by France’s elite blues rhythm section Mig Toquereau on bass and Pascal Delmas on drums. Giles Robson belongs to the cream of the current blues generation, which has developed its own harp style. Now he dives into the deep Delta with five enchanting blues songs. Solo acoustic, in an intimate line-up or with a band. This is Vol1 , so hopefully more great things are coming our way. What an amazing EP!

​Gypsy Soul features a diverse pallet of influences capturing various genres on this release such as Rock, Blues, R&B, and a dash of funky undertones. This album is reminiscent 60s and 70s vibe music melted into a pot of contemporary Blues-Rock. Written and produced by Jennifer Lyn and bandmate Richard Torrance, Gypsy Soul showcases the pair's compositional and lyrical progression as a writing team.

​Johnny King's music ranges from blues, roots, rock, reggae, bluegrass, country, motown, gospel, funk, Latin, ragtime, New Orleans jazz, jam band, and psychedelic southern rock. He calls it the "Baptism of Sound!"  

Jan James honed her powerful vocals in a church choir, and learned guitar licks from a Tennessean named Catfish. She made her way from a family-run fishing resort in central Michigan to downtown Chicago to become one of The Windy City’s most enduring female artists. Her creative partnership with Craig Calvert is a decades-old exploration of roots music of all kinds – rock n’ roll, soul, country, and of course, the blues. The path to ‘Time Bomb,’ the newest record, took them from the Midwest to Europe, through the studios of notable producers, onto stages with the biggest names in music. And it all started in a small café near Michigan State University.

​With volume 4, the miniseries that focused on the 'rock 'n' roll made in Germany' also comes to an end. Compiler Nico Feuerbach one again was looking for 32 tracks that give a nice picture of how the heyday of rock 'n' roll was experienced in Germany. Well-known, lesser-known and even rare songs complement each other nicely. That also applies to the artists on this album. Well-known artists who also achieved success beyond the German borders were undoubtedly Peter Kraus, Ralf Bendix, Conny Froboess and The Rattles. All are present on this compilation. But non-German artists also liked to record songs in the German language. Here we find, among others, Connie Francis, Casey Jones & The Governors and Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers, a band that actually put the later Beatles on the tracks. For their repertoire, a number of them provided the then English-language hits with German lyrics. Others opted for original songs that had the spirit of the fifties and sixties in them. Ralf Bendix, who also had success outside his home country with 'Babysitter Boogie' opens the album with the German version of 'At The Hop'. The German Elvis could of course not be missed. You can hear Ted Herold here with 'Ich Brauch' Keinen Ring', an adaptation of 'Wear My Ring Around Your Neck'. The Gisha Brothers opted for Chuck Berry and 'Memphis, Tennessee', which rocks like the master himself. The Liverpool Beats drift more towards rhythm & blues with their version of Jimmy Reed's 'Let's Get Together'. The Rattles provide a good dose of garage rock 'n' roll with 'Shimmy Shimmy', a song by Hank Ballard. Together with the Tielman Brothers, The Javalins formed the most famous Indo rock bands in the Netherlands. The latter band you get here with 'Caroline' a remake of 'You're So Fine'. The Tielman Brothers performed frequently in Germany at the time. Those performances provided inspiration for the German The Taifuns. They put down an energetic instrumental here with 'Go, Go'. Another great instrumental song, rather The Shadows style, Peter Reese & The Pages present with the original 'Pages Rhythm'. Things are rougher with Hannes Patek in 'Susie-Twist'. Also worth mentioning is the rocking version of ‘Too Much Monkey Business’ as ‘Too Much Language Business’ by The King-Beats. John Lamers later also shines with 'Bitte Bleib Bei Mir' or 'Lover Please', as well as The Pralins in 'High Heel Sneakers'. Although their English was not yet at the top level.
The album ends in peace. When the energy gives way to a closing at the bar, the laidback 'Constantly' by Benny Quick sounds through the speakers.
With volume 4, the Bear Family label closes the 'Rockin' With The Krauts' series in a nice way. For many, this series will bring back fond memories. Those who did not experience this period can perfectly empathize with German rock 'n' roll in the fifties and sixties with this 4-part series. And finally, the 30-page German-language booklet takes a closer look at German rock 'n' roll and the 32 tracks. Beautiful series!

​Still playing and touring the World, Li’l Jimmy Reed is the last of the original Louisiana bluesmen. The blues was born in the deep South, a wild outcry against segregation, poverty and hard, back-breaking work. Sadly most of the great musicians who created this vibrant, influential music have passed on, leaving only their recordings to testify to their genius. However, one man, whose career stretches back to the time when rhythm ‘n’ blues was just bursting onto the popular music scene, is still with us and playing better than ever. When two-time Blues Music Award nominee and budding music historian Ben Levin (age 23) first contacted Lil' Jimmy Reed (Leon Atkins, age 84), the two bluesmen, at very different times in their lives and careers, discovered that their musical synergy was effortless. It was soon clear to Levin that producing the capstone album of this treasured icon who epitomizes the Louisiana down-home blues style was an important contribution to recorded blues history. Lil' Jimmy Reed's powerful harmonica playing, stinging guitar, and commanding vocals are showcased in a mixture of covers and original songs written by Ben Levin, his father Aron Levin, and Lil' Jimmy.

​2021 Independent Blues Award Winner Grainne Duffy returns with her fifth album and Blue Heart Records debut, a collaboration with multi-GRAMMY-winning producer Chris Goldsmith. A musical exploration of Delta Blues traditions and their extension into 70's blues rock yields a fine contemporary blues result, gently infused with tasty Celtic lines. Duffy supplies, in one unique mix, Irish mysticism, soulful vocals, an amazing groove.

​Edwin 'Captain Keys' Risbourg and Nico de Cock a.k.a. Big D are soulmates in the renowned formation The BluesBones. Now they've had the new project Big D & Captain Keys for a while now. An idea that took shape when the duo performed a bit on a piano in a hotel bar or airport lounge. Two voices and a ivory keyboard, that's all it takes to create an intimate setting. Highly recommended! 

​Peter Clasen was born in Ostend and moved to Brussels in the 1980s. He started his musical career as a drummer in the post-punk band 10 Kleine Snobs, of which Elvis Peeters was also a member. The 'post punk spirit' did not let go of Clasen and as a result he created the electro-dub project Neven. Neven made 10 records and performed on various European stages for 12 years. From 2010, Peter changed course and made music for socially related events and street theaters such as De Zinnekeparade. Occasionally he performed and made records with acts such as Monsieur Smits, The Library Sisters or Elektratique.
Peter has played a little guitar since his youth, but he always felt that he could not express himself fully and properly through that instrument. Until 2019! Then he bought himself a somewhat unusual guitar, namely a four-string tenor guitar. A guitar, of course with 4 strings, that has a narrower body and was used by American jazz musicians in the 1930s.
On 'Anderlecht' he presents 8 surf guitar-inspired instrumental and semi-instrumental songs on danceable electronic beats. Songs that are reminiscent of The Spotnicks, Link Wray, Kraftwerk, The Ramones, Underworld, Derrick May and Front 242.
These links with a musical past sharpened with the more current electronic beats provide energetic danceable music. Peter uses his 4 string guitar as the only real instrument. He programmed the beats, basses and synths with Cubase and Logic Pro. The guitar provides beautiful parts. These are immediately expressed in opener, the also very melodic 'Saint Guidon Dub' and certainly in the rousing 'Opposite Directions'. In the closing of side 1, 'Beat Beat The Clock' I clearly hear influences from Link Wray. 'I Could Dance Back To You' sends me more towards Kraftwerk. Closing track 'Are We Dreamers' is a somewhat quieter song that perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the dreamy title.
If you ignore the beats, it does indeed appear that Peter has studied the guitar legends well. He reduces those influences to a minimum so that they don't become complicated guitar monstrosities.
With 'Anderlecht', Peter Clasen not only proves that he is extremely musically inclined, but also that adding electronic beats and synths should not be at odds with the presence of a nice melody. 'Anderlecht' is certainly an album to reflect on.

​Brad Wilson is a charismatic and talented guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Just like on his previous five full-lengths, Wilson once again shows his musical versatility. 

​Few artists in the genres of rockabilly and rock 'n' roll could score more than locally in the 1950s, the heyday of both genres. Legends such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran succeeded. This also applied to Sanford Clark who immortalized his name in rock 'n' roll history with 'The Fool' in 1956. The song also landed him a contract with Dot Records, which made him one of the most successful rockers of his time. Later Clark also made recordings for Ramco, Warner Bros, Project and Trey, among others. 'The Fool' was produced by Lee Hazlewood, who also immediately profiled himself as a producer. It is not surprising that 'The Fool' became a national hit, because the song typifies Clark in a strikingly personal way, which differs from the average rock and roll artists. In 1966 he recorded 'The Fool' again, in an adapted version for the time, for the Ramco label. Of course both versions found their way to this compilation, as well as 'Lonesome For A Letter' the flip side of the original single released in 1956. Song that winks at Elvis. But Sanford had much more to offer. This is immediately apparent from the first track 'Ooo Baby', which he plays as an experienced rocker. And also note the great work of lead guitarist Al Casey. In addition to Sanford's formidable performances, the same Casey shines on every song. 'Modern Romance', 'Usta Be My Baby', 'Love Charms' and 'Lou Be Doo' are just a few of the many gems on this album. Also noteworthy is the then unreleased 'Cross-Eyed Alley Cat'. Unbelievable, because the song is a blast of a rock song. Another great track is the pre-Dean Martin version of the Hazlewood composed 'Houston'. A rarity is also the presence of the two versions of 'A Cheat'. In addition to the original version, you also get the version with 'snare drum overdub'. Clark's blues side floats again in Hazlewood's 'Just Bluesin', as well as in 'It Hurts Me Too'. You can hear that he also had country in his genes on 'Black Jack County Chain'. Humorous sounds more like '(They Call Me) Country'. In addition, you will also find rare recordings that Sanford made for Project, Trey and Warner Bros. Sanford Clark passed away on July 4, 2021 due to Covid. He was 85 years old.
That he can be counted among the historical heroes of rock 'n' roll is clear from this compilation. His masterful voice, the beautiful choice of songs, the extremely competent studio musicians and especially the presence of producer Lee Hazlewood are an undeniable part of this. In addition, there is a 36-page booklet, in which, in addition to beautiful photos, you can learn everything about the person Sanford Clark and the tracks. Super release!

The 33 songs date from the period 1955 - 1964 and can be divided into rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, jazz, pop and instrumentals and provide you with a 'holiday, sun, sea' feeling.
Let's embark immediately with Frankie Ford and his well-known 'Sea Cruise'. The original was by Huey 'Piano' Smith, but it is undoubtedly best known in the Johnny Rivers version. Later you also get the rare version of the song by 'The Keil Isles'. Ricky Nelson takes us on 'A Long Vacation'. There is no shortage of well-known names on this compilation, because Joey Dee and The Starliters also pass by. Also nice is the instrumental 'By The Beautiful Sea' from Billy Mure's Supersonic Guitars. It is followed up with a formidable instrumental version of Charles Trenet's ‘La Mer’ as ‘Beyond The Sea’ by Earl Grant. You get more of an instrumental outlier via Speedy West and the steel guitar drenched 'Rippling Waters'. Prefer some ska? No problem, skip to 'Cool Shade' by Don Drummond and The Skatalites. The Ivies provide great vocal work with 'Sunshine', as well as The Techniques with 'Moon Tan' and The Shells in 'Sippin' Soda'. The prize for the most outstanding version of a classic goes to Chubby Chops and The Twisting Cyclones and 'Summertime'. Presenting a romantic duet you get from Dick Haymes & Eileen Wilson with Irving Berlin's 'It's A Lovely Day Today'. Italy is represented by Mina e I Solitari and the catchy 'Tintarella Di Luna'.
You're sure to get into the rockabilly spirit with ‘Thunderbird Beach’ by Floyd Brown, Vince Maloy's ‘Soda Pop’, ‘There's Gonna Be A Party (On The Beach)’ by Bobby Gray, ‘Magic In A Summer Night’ by Myron Lee and The Caddies and Marvin Rainwater with 'Hot And Cold'.
Surf songs match perfectly with the summer feeling of sun and sea. Rickey Leigh and The Twins got that right in 'Seashore Stomp', as did Pete Cummins and The Redeemers Four in 'The Surfin' Freeze'. For instrumental surf you can go to 'Breaker' by The Polaras.
You can enjoy a portion of rhythm & blues with 'Bermudas' by Big Jay Mercer. Fans of big bands will get their money's worth with Harry James and his orchestra in 'Sleepy Lagoon'. Another great orchestral track comes with 'Sail Along Silvery Moon' by Billy Vaughn's orchestra.
With classy artists Les Paul & Mary Fond and 'In The Good Old Summertime' our 'sea cruise' unfortunately comes to an end.

​Nic Clark learned early on in the recording of Everybody’s Buddy to not count himself out, which turned out to be the name of one of the tracks (“Don’t Count Yourself Out’). He’s lived a hard life battling an eating disorder since he was a young kid. In his teens and ‘20s, Clark weighed upwards of 400 pounds. It’s a daily struggle for Clark, though he admits that his life is not all that different from many Americans. If you’re ever in need of a friend, simply put on the new studio album, ‘Everybody’s Buddy’, by Mexican-American musician Nic Clark and let his uplifting and honest songs pass through those tough life moments.

Let's start right away with the well-known and sublimely rocking 'Hickory Dickory Dock' by Big Boy Myles. Myles is followed by Johnny Acey with "Please Don't Go (Back To Baltimore)" that conveys both blues and gospel. Also beautiful is 'Polly Molly' by The Five Masks, who also provide the rocking rhythm & blues with wonderful harmony vocals. Cool harmony vocals then also characterize 'Forget It' by the vocal group The Larks and certainly 'Sud Buster' by The Spinners. Curtis Knight is best known for his collaboration with Jimi Hendrix. He shows that he could also score vocally on the swinging 'Gotta Have A New Dress' that he recorded for Shell in 1962. If you're looking for a throbbing sax-driven rhythm & blues instrumental, you can't ignoreren King Curtis. Here he presents 'Beach Party' and pay also attention to the performance of the Hammond in addition to the sax. Phil Flowers' ‘You Stole My Heart" is remarkably modulated after the early Elvis. Lee Dorsey was one of New Orleans' most famous artists. ‘Ya Ya’ earned him a worldwide hit. That the man had many more beautiful songs, proves 'Rock'. It is common knowledge that some genres are very close to each other. A good example of this is "I Wanna Do Everything For You" by Brook Benton, which sounds very soulful in addition to rhythm & blues. Another jack-of-all-trades was Wynona Carr. Gospel, rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll characterized her repertoire. Rock 'n' roll is here the basis for 'Touch And Go'. A hell of an instrumental rocker comes with The Upsetters and their 'Jaywalking'. The band acted as accompaniment for Little Richard on several singles. You can hear him a little later with 'Ain't Nothin' Happening', on which he takes it a bit easier than what we are used to from him. The title track 'Lonely Lonely Train' comes from Sonny Anderson, on which the backing vocals play for train. Wonderful!
There are a lot of bangers galore at this volume. Listing them all would lead us too far, but 'Please, Please Be Mine' by El Pauling & Royal Abbit, including a great piano solo, 'Struttin' and Twistin'' by Roosevelt Grier, 'Turn It Off' by Dean & Jean and The Jarmels with 'She Loves To Dance' are certainly also worth mentioning.
With the rhythm & blues of Jimmy Witherspoon's 'Move Me Baby', not only this volume closes, but also the 'More Boss Black Rockers' series.
We secretly hope that compiler Little Victor will expand on this. Wait and see!
