​Als Benjamin Joy Eidson werd Benny Joy geboren op 5 november 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia. Wanneer Benny 5 jaar was verhuisde het gezin naar Tampa, Florida. In 1951 vormde Benny in High School zijn eerste band. Daar kwam hij ook in contact met John Wilkie Taylor, die later als Big John Taylor belangrijk zou worden voor Benny. Het duo luisterde naar country en blues, stijlen die ook hun carrières zouden beïnvloeden, net zoals het geval zou worden bij vele rockabillyartiesten. Benny’s muziekcarrière begon in 1957 bij het Tri-Dec label, waar hij aanvankelijk een contract kreeg als songschrijver. Zijn eerste opname was de single ‘‘Hey’…High School Baby! / Spin The Bottle’. Buck Ram, die manager was van The Platters, kocht in 1958 de Tri-Dec masters en Benny’s songschrijverscontract. Ram tekende op datzelfde moment tevens Benny en Big John Tayor voor de muziekuitgeverij Argo Music. In 1958 nam Benny voor Rams Antler label ‘Little Red Book / Crash The Party’ op. In datzelfde jaar stuurde Ram het duo Joy/Taylor naar Nashville om opnames te maken met professionele muzikanten. Na zijn samenwerking met Buck Ram stapte Benny over naar Decca. Daar nam hij 3 singles op die weinig deden. Benny kwam eerder aan de kost als songwriter. Die job oefende hij gedurende 10 jaren uit in Nashville, waar hij meer dan 200 songs pende voor bekende countryartiesten.
Op 52 jarige leeftijd overleed Benny op 28 oktober 1988. John Taylor overleed net als Benny aan kanker, op 13 april 1995. Hij was 58.
‘Little Red Book / Crash The Party’ was Bennys enige hitsingle buiten Amerika. Jammer want zijn overige prestaties zijn ronduit dezelfde pareltjes.
De kwaliteit van Joy wordt meteen duidelijk bij opener ‘‘Hey’…High School Baby!’ uit 1957. Het nummer had heel wat in zijn mars en stak zonder meer met kop en schouders uit boven vele rock-‘n-roll producties die in die periode op het publiek werden losgelaten. De energie die Benny Joy hier tentoon spreidt druipt van de songs af. Vocaal was hij gezegend met een krachtige stem. Die koppelde hij aan krachtige eigen composities, die hij bovendien van sublieme rockarrangementen voorzag. Leuk zijn ook de beide versies van ‘Spin The Bottle’. In 1957 nam hij de rock-‘n-rollversie op om het nummer een jaartje later in een ietwat dixieversie aan het vinyl toe te vertrouwen. Samen met Big John Taylor zet Benny met ‘Money, Money’ een sterk staaltje van een instrumentaal nummer neer. Voor deze compositie tekende Big John. Dat het niet steeds rock-‘n-roll hoefde te zijn, laat Joy horen in de ‘tearjerkers’ ‘Sincerely, Your Friend’ en ‘You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)’. Begin zestiger jaren dreef de muziek ietwat richting pop. Voor Joy was dat geen probleem, want met ‘Birds Of A Feather Fly Together’ en ‘I’m Of No More Use To You Old Earth’ wist hij perfect hoe dat genre behoorde te klinken.
Verder op dit album hoor je Benny’s composities uitgevoerd door collega artiesten. Collega artiesten die de waarde van Joys composities alle eer aan doen. De knik in de stem van Marty Evans in ‘Eyes Of Tears’ doet een beetje aan Buddy Holly denken. Verder baden die nummers in een heerlijk poppy sfeertje, terwijl ‘Lets Walk Away Strangers’ door Bill Phillips duidelijk country in de genen heeft. Wat andermaal bewijst wat een getalenteerde songschrijver Joy wel was. Uitzonderingen hierop zijn ‘(What I’ll Do) Call The Zoo ‘ door Darrell McCall en ‘Hey, Boss Man’ van Ray Smith, waar rock-‘n-roll toch weer meer het voortouw neemt. ‘She Loved Everybody But Me’ door Charlie Rich, had dan weer net zo goed door Elvis kunnen uitgevoerd worden. Wat een prachtsong!
Voor de afsluiter zorgt Big John Taylor met het uit zijn pen gevloeide formidabele door gitaar gedreven instrumentale ‘Stompin’.
Voor velen mogen Benny Joy en Big John Taylor voetnoten zijn in de Amerikaanse muziekgeschiedenis, maar de 29 tracks op dit album laten uitschijnen dat dit eigenlijk onterecht is en dat de wetten van de muziekbusiness allesbehalve voor iedereen gelijk zijn. Want zowel Joy als Taylor verdienden ruimschoots meer erkenning. Benny was niet enkel een begenadigd uitvoerend artiest, maar had ook de ‘real skills’ als songschrijver.
Het album is te verkrijgen op cd en op 10 inch lp. Op de 10 inch lp staan 10 uit de cd geselecteerde tracks, maar bij aankoop ervan krijg je de cd met alle 29 nummers er als bonus bij. Niet te missen!

'Little Red Book / Crash The Party' was Benny's only hit single outside America. Too bad because his other performances are simply the same gems.
The quality of Joy is immediately clear with opener ''Hey'…High School Baby!'' from 1957. The song had a lot to offer and was certainly head and shoulders above many rock 'n' roll productions that were produced during that period. The energy that Benny Joy exhibits here drips from the songs. Vocally he was blessed with a powerful voice. He linked these to powerful compositions of his own, which he also provided with sublime rock arrangements. Both versions of 'Spin The Bottle' are also nice. In 1957 he recorded the rock 'n' roll version and released the song on vinyl a year later in a somewhat Dixie version. Together with Big John Taylor, Benny delivers a strong example of an instrumental song with 'Money, Money'. Big John signed this composition. Joy shows that it didn't always have to be rock 'n' roll in the 'tearjerkers' 'Sincerely, Your Friend' and 'You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)'. In the early sixties the music drifted somewhat towards pop. That was no problem for Joy, because with 'Birds Of A Feather Fly Together' and 'I'm Of No More Use To You Old Earth' he knew perfectly what that genre should sound like.
Furthermore, on this album you will hear Benny's compositions performed by other artists. Artists who do justice to the value of Joy's compositions. The kink in Marty Evans' voice in 'Eyes Of Tears' is a bit reminiscent of Buddy Holly. Furthermore, those songs have a wonderfully poppy atmosphere, while 'Lets Walk Away Strangers' by Bill Phillips clearly has country in the genes. Which once again proves what a talented songwriter Joy was. Exceptions to this are (What I'll Do) Call The Zoo' by Darrell McCall and 'Hey, Boss Man' by Ray Smith, where rock 'n' roll takes a little bit more the lead again. 'She Loved Everybody But Me' by Charlie Rich could just as well have been performed by Elvis. What a beautiful song!
Big John Taylor provides the closing track with the formidable guitar-driven instrumental 'Stompin'.
For many, Benny Joy and Big John Taylor may be footnotes in American music history, but the 29 tracks on this album show that this is actually unjustified and that the laws of the music business are anything but the same for everyone. Because both Joy and Taylor deserved more recognition. Benny was not only a gifted performing artist, but also had 'real skills' as a songwriter.
