​Met het album rond Eddie Bond in de ‘Rocks’ serie werpt het Duitse Bear Family Records een blik op de Memphis rockabilly. De cd bevat 14 tracks uit de fifties, die Bond opnam voor Ekko, Mercury en Sun/PI, 15 in de jaren zestig opgenomen songs voor o.a. Millionaire en Stomper Time en 6 songs uit de rockabilly revival van de jaren zeventig.
Bond werd in 1933 geboren in Memphis en toen hij zijn eerste opname maakte in de helft van de vijftiger jaren, stond hij in het middelpunt van het nieuwe rockabillygenre. Van 1956 tot 1959 behoorde Bond tot de toppers van het genre. Zo trad hij op in shows waar ook Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins en Johnny Cash van de partij waren.  Eddie startte en eindigde als een countryartiest, maar in zijn begeleidingsband zaten steeds muzikanten die tot de top behoorden van de rockabillymuzikanten. Zijn Mercury opnames met gitarist Reggie Young zijn klassiekers binnen het rockabillygenre. Opnames die ook hier terug te vinden zijn.
De compilatie start met Eddie’s grootste hit, zeg maar zijn ‘signature song’, het in 1956 opgenomen ‘Rockin’ Daddy’. Nummer dat hem bekend maakte als de ‘rockin’ daddy from ding dong Tennessee’. De door John Hughey bespeelde steelgitaar, laat duidelijk Bonds countryachtergrond horen. De cd eindigt met hetzelfde nummer, maar dan opgenomen in 1972.
Het was in de jaren vijftig niet ongewoon dat originele hits veelvuldig gecoverd werden. Dat deed ook Eddie Bond, maar dan wel op een heel speciale manier. Dat ervaar je bijvoorbeeld al in Carl Perkins’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, waar Jerry Lee Smith een dijk van een pianosolo loslaat. Andere uitstekende covers zijn o.a. Hank Williams’ ‘Fool About You’, Jimmy Reeds ‘Big Boss Man’, Tarheel Slims ‘No. 9 Train’ met waarschijnlijk Charlie Feathers op gitaar al is daar geen zekerheid rond, Hank Ballards ‘Tore Up Over You’, de rockabillyversie van Ray Charles’ ‘I’ve Got A Woman’ met subliem gitaarwerk van Reggie Young, Little Richards ‘Long Tall Sally’ en Chuck Berrys ‘Memphis, Tennessee dat kan bogen op een heerlijke samenzang tussen Eddie en diens bassist Bobby Joe Killingsworth.
Eigenlijk is het beschamend om ze als covers te bestempelen, want vaak overtreffen ze moeiteloos het origineel.
Dat Eddie Bond van vele muzikale markten thuis was laat hij horen in ‘Love Makes A Fool (Every Day), een parel van honky-tonk country. Op ‘Satisfied’ zorgt het koor dan weer voor een aangename gospelfeel, terwijl ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ in een New Orleans rhythm & bluesjasje wordt gestoken.
Maar ook als writer en co-writer had Bond talent. Het is een feit dat ‘Here Comes The Train’ tot zijn beste nummers behoort. Maar ook het uit zijn pen vloeiende ‘Monkey Business’ is een knap staaltje van rockende country. Andere razendknappe originele songs zijn o.a. ‘Look Like A Monkey’ en ‘The Monkey And The Baboon’.
Door zijn hele repertoire hoor je Eddies liefde voor country. De manier waarop hij die injecteert in zijn rockabilly maken zijn uitvoeringen heel uniek.
In het 38 pagina’s tellend booklet schrijft Martin Hawkins, aan de hand van interviews met Eddie, een uitermate gedetailleerde biografie. Traditiegetrouw krijg je ook alle opnamedetails van de tracks. Dit alles is tevens prachtig geïllustreerd met foto’s en illustraties.
Eddie Bond was naast rockabillyartiest bedrijvig op vele vlakken. Zo was hij o.a. dj, nachtclubeigenaar en had hij zijn eigen platenlabel. Eddie Bond overleed in 2013.
Met de spots op Eddie Bond te plaatsen in de ‘Rocks’ serie brengt Bear Family Records een hommage aan een rockabillyartiest die bij velen enkel gekend is via het nummer ‘Rockin’ Daddy’. Eddie had echter meer zijn mars. Hoog tijd om ook zijn andere nummers naar waarde te schatten. Daar is deze compilatie de geschikte tool voor.

With the album about Eddie Bond in the 'Rocks' series, the German Bear Family Records takes a look at Memphis rockabilly. The CD contains 14 tracks from the fifties, which Bond recorded for Ekko, Mercury and Sun/PI, 15 songs recorded in the sixties for Millionaire and Stomper Time, among others, and 6 songs from the rockabilly revival of the seventies.
Bond was born in Memphis in 1933 and when he made his first recording in the mid-1950s, he was at the center of the new rockabilly genre. From 1956 to 1959, Bond was one of the top stars of the genre. He performed in shows where Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash were also present. Eddie started and ended as a country artist, but his backing band always included musicians who belonged to the top rockabilly musicians. His Mercury recordings with guitarist Reggie Young are classics within the rockabilly genre. Recordings that can also be found here.

It was not uncommon in the 1950s for original hits to be frequently covered. Eddie Bond did that too, but in a very special way. You already experience this, for example, in Carl Perkins' 'Blue Suede Shoes', where Jerry Lee Smith unleashes a hell of a piano solo. Other excellent covers include Hank Williams' 'Fool About You', Jimmy Reed's 'Big Boss Man', Tarheel Slim's 'No. 9 Train' with probably Charlie Feathers on guitar, although there is no certainty about that, Hank Ballard's 'Tore Up Over You', the rockabilly version of Ray Charles' 'I've Got A Woman' with sublime guitar work by Reggie Young, Little Richards' 'Long Tall Sally' and Chuck Berry's 'Memphis, Tennessee, which boasts wonderful harmonies between Eddie and his bassist Bobby Joe Killingsworth.
It's actually embarrassing to label them as covers, because they often effortlessly surpass the original.
The cd shows that Eddie Bond was at home in many musical markets in 'Love Makes A Fool (Every Day), a pearl of honky-tonk country. On 'Satisfied' the choir provides a pleasant gospel feel, while 'Let The Good Times Roll' is given a New Orleans rhythm & blues twist.
But Bond also had talent as a writer and co-writer. It is a fact that 'Here Comes The Train' is one of his best songs. But also 'Monkey Business' is also a fine example of rocking country. Other great original songs include 'Look Like A Monkey' and 'The Monkey And The Baboon'.
You can hear Eddie's love for country throughout his repertoire. The way he injects it into his rockabilly makes his performances very unique.
In the 38-page booklet, Martin Hawkins writes an extremely detailed biography based on interviews with Eddie. Traditionally, you also get all the recording details of the tracks. All of this is also beautifully illustrated with photos and illustrations.
In addition to being a rockabilly artist, Eddie Bond was active in many areas. He was, among other things, a DJ, a nightclub owner and had his own record label. Eddie Bond died in 2013.
By placing the spots on Eddie Bond in the 'Rocks' series, Bear Family Records pays tribute to a rockabilly artist who is only known to many through the song 'Rockin' Daddy'. However, Eddie had more to his advantage. High time to appreciate his other songs as well. This compilation is the right tool for that.
