​In de review van ‘The Blues According To Hank Williams / Hank Williams According To The Blues’ kondigden wij reeds deze tweede luxueuze uitgave van Richard Weize Archives aan.
De titel van dit album ‘Encore Lovey’! is ontleend aan de kreet die de dansers riepen tijdens de dansgelegenheden die door de Trinidad String Band opgeluisterd werden. De Trinidad String Band werd geleid door violist George Robertson Lovelace Baillie, kortweg Lovey genoemd. De band was op zijn best vanaf het begin van de 20ste eeuw tot in 1928, het jaar waarop de band stopte. In 1912 telde de groep, inclusief Lovey, twaalf leden. In datzelfde jaar maakte de groep voor enkele optredens een trip naar New York. Gedurende hun verblijf daar maakte de band opnames voor de Victor Talking Machine Company en de Columbia Graphophone Company, wat meteen de eerste waxopnames waren van een band uit het Engelstalige West-Indië. Het nieuwe Spaans-Amerikaans karakter van hun instrumentarium was verantwoordelijk voor hun succes. Hun reputatie was zo indrukwekkend dat in de laatste dagen voor het uitbreken van de Wereldoorlog 1, engineers van Columbia naar Trinidad trokken om een vijftigtal opnames te maken gedurende sessies die startten op 31 juli en eindigden op 5 augustus 1914.
De drie cd’s uit deze schitterende uitgave bevatten teruggevonden opnames uit 1912, aangevuld met 40 van de 50 of meer in 1914 gemaakte opnames.
Het repertoire weerspiegelt ritmes van verschillende eilanden in het Caribisch gebied en het vasteland van Zuid-Amerika. Behalve Cuba in het Caribisch gebied, Argentinië en Brazilië, is Lovey's de vroegste zwarte, door een band gemaakte muziek op platen in Amerika. Hoewel het geen jazz of ragtime was, introduceerde de band een andere dansmuziekstijl met 19e-eeuwse wortels die ‘hot’ werd en die voor het eerst via geluidsopnames werd vastgelegd.
En die zijn niet mis. Misschien klinken de opnames bij een eerste beluistering wat vreemd in de oren, maar al vlug heeft Lovey’s Trinidad String Band je in zijn greep. Immers die prachtige instrumentale nummers dateren uit een tijd waarin de melodie nog enorm belangrijk was. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de prestaties van Lovey’s Band destijds enorm geliefd waren tijdens dansgelegenheden. De nummers vormden de ideale achtergrond voor de vluggere paseo of de tragere wals.
Dat we met deze uitgave hiervan kunnen genieten, is meer dan uniek. En alhoewel deze muziek meer dan een eeuw oud is, is de geluidskwaliteit op deze 3 cd’s zonder meer enorm goed.
‘Encore ‘Lovey’!, The Historic Trinidad String Band Recordings 1912 & 1914’ is een luxueuze
gelimiteerde uitgave op een 10 inch formaat. Naast de 3 cd’s met in totaal 65 tracks krijg je een 48 pagina’s tellend boek waar je alle mogelijke informatie over de band kan vinden. Boek dat bovendien bijzonder knap geïllustreerd is met memorabilia, zoals foto’s, krantenartikelen en aankondigingen van optredens.  Aangezien het een ‘limited edition’ betreft, is ook nu snel zijn weer de boodschap. Bedenk dat je me deze uitgave niet alleen een fantastisch tijdsdocument, maar ook unieke muziek in huis haalt.

​In the review of 'The Blues According To Hank Williams / Hank Williams According To The Blues' we already announced this second luxurious edition of Richard Weize Archives.
The title of this album is taken from the cry the dancers shouted during the dances that were graced by the Trinidad String Band. The Trinidad String Band was led by violinist George Robertson Lovelace Baillie, simply known as Lovey. The band was at its best from the early 20th century until 1928, the year the band stopped. In 1912 the group, including Lovey, had twelve members. In the same year the group made a trip to New York for a few performances. During their stay there, the band recorded for the Victor Talking Machine Company and the Columbia Graphophone Company, which were the first wax recordings by a band from the Anglophone West Indies. The new Spanish-American character of their instruments was responsible for their success. Their reputation was so impressive that in the closing days before the outbreak of World War 1, engineers from Columbia traveled to Trinidad to make some fifty recordings, during sessions that started on July 31 and ended on August 5, 1914.
The three CDs in this superb edition contain recovered recordings from 1912, supplemented by 40 of the 50 or more recordings made in 1914.
The repertoire reflects rhythms from various islands in the Caribbean and mainland South America. Besides Cuba in the Caribbean, Argentina and Brazil, Lovey's is the earliest black band-made music on records in America. While not jazz or ragtime, the band introduced a different dance music style with 19th-century roots that became "hot" and first recorded.
And these recordings are not wrong. They may sound a bit strange on the first listen, but Lovey's Trinidad String Band soon has you in its grip. After all, these beautiful instrumental songs come from a time when the melody was still extremely important. It is therefore not surprising that the performances of Lovey's Band were hugely popular at the time during the appearances on the dance halls. The songs formed the ideal background for the faster paseo or the slower waltz.
The fact that we can enjoy this with this edition is more than unique. And although this music is more than a century old, the sound quality of these 3 CDs is unquestionably very good.

Book that is also very cleverly illustrated with memorabilia, such as photos, newspaper articles and announcements of performances. Since it is a 'limited edition', being fast is again the message. Keep in mind that this edition is not only a fantastic period document, but also contains unique music.
