​Volgende artiest die in de ‘Rock’ serie in de spots wordt geplaatst is Frank Virtue. Scoren kon Frank maar één maal, namelijk met het nummer ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle’, waarmee hij tot de Top 10 kon doordringen. Op deze compilatie krijg je nog twee extra ‘guitar boogies’, namelijk een vroege versie van de Esquire Boys uit 1953 en ‘Guitar Boogie Twist’ uit 1960. Belangrijker en interessanter is dat deze verzamelaar een mooi beeld geeft van de muzikale evolutie die Frank in diverse settings doormaakte. Soms nam hij op als Frank Virtuoso en eerlijk gezegd na beluistering kun je niet anders vaststellen dat hij wel degelijk een gitaarvirtuoos was. Hij startte als bassist bij de Esquire Boys, die nog min of meer een binding hadden met rhythm & blues. Zijn virtuositeit is ook te merken in de vertolking en het aanvoelen van zijn coverversies van bekende nummers. Mooie voorbeelden hiervan zijn op dit album terug te vinden in Carl Perkins’ ‘Boppin’ The Blues’, Haley’s ‘Rock-A-Beatin’ Boogie’ en het meest nog in Berry’s ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, Little Richard’s ‘Rip It Up’ en het van Ray Charles gekende ‘Hallelujah, I Love Her So’. De eigen rock-‘n-roll nummers die Frank opnam staan tevens moeiteloos schouder aan schouder met het repertoire van een Bill Haley, om maar iemand te noemen. Ronduit subliem is ook ‘Go Joe Go’ dat hij opnam met het Frank Virtuoso Quintet. Het nummer wordt vooruit gestuwd door een sax die wild om zich heen blazend het nummer naar ongekende hoogtes stuurt. Eind jaren ’50 ontpopte Virtue zich als een gitaarwonder dat uitblonk in instrumentale nummers als ‘Guitar In Orbit’, het reeds eerder genoemde ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle’, ‘Flippin’ In’ en ‘Highland Guitar’, om maar enkele van de 13 formidabele instrumentale tracks te noemen, die deze verzamelaar afsluiten. De kers op de taart komt er met afsluiter Franks dynamische versie van Duane Eddy’s uit 1958 stammend ‘Rebel Rouser’, hier omgevormd tot ‘Rebel Rouser 65’. In de jaren ’70 werkte Virtue als studiomuzikant nog mee aan Northern Soul opnames.
Bekende, minder bekende en obscure opnames die Frank in diverse settings opnam voor zowel kleine als budgetlabels plaatsen zijn virtuoos gitaarwerk in de kijker. Uitgebreide informatie over Franks carrière, zijn chronologische discografie, aangevuld met illustraties en zeldzaam fotomateriaal tref je aan in het 36 pagina’s tellende kleurrijke booklet geschreven door muziekjournalist Bill Dahl. ​The next artist to be featured in the ‘Rock’ series is Frank Virtue. Frank could only score once, namely with the song ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle’, which allowed him to reach the Top 10. On this compilation you get two extra 'guitar boogies', namely an early version of the Esquire Boys from 1953 and 'Guitar Boogie Twist' from 1960. More important and more interesting is that this collector gives a nice picture of the musical evolution that Frank went through in various settings. From rhyhtm & blues to rock and roll he eventually became a master of instrumental guitar songs.
Well-known, less well-known and obscure recordings that Frank recorded in various settings for both small and budget labels put his virtuoso guitar work in the spotlight.
