​Het is algemeen bekend dat de rhythm & blues de voedingsbodem was voor het doorstoten van de rock-‘n-roll. Werd de overgang aanvankelijk nog bestempeld als rockende rhythm & blues, uiteindelijk zou het rock-‘n-roll worden. Een aantal artiesten, alhoewel ze dit meestal niet konden verzilveren, lagen met hun rockende rhythm & blues aan de basis van de rock-‘n-roll. Eentje onder hen was zeker bluesshouter Roy Brown, wiens werk nu door Bear Family Records in de spots wordt geplaatst. De cd bevat 30 tracks die Brown destijds opnam voor het DeLuxe label waar hij tussen 1948 en 1951 zijn grootste hits scoorde. Daarnaast krijg je zijn opnames voor het King label (1952-1955) en deze voor Imperial Records (1956-1958) toen de legendarische New Orleans artiest Dave Bartholomew Browns comeback mee hielp lanceren. 
Opmerkelijk is tevens dat Roy naast een indrukwekkende performer ook een memorabele songschrijver was. Maar liefst 25 van de 30 songs op deze compilatie vloeiden uit zijn pen, of was hij  er als co-writer bij betrokken. Zijn ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’ uit 1947 zette de deur voor de in de startblokken zittende rock-‘n-roll wagenwijd open. Dat bewijst ook opener ‘Saturday Nite’ dat Roy in 1956, de hoogdagen van de rock-‘n-roll, opnam. Andere sublieme rockers zijn zeker ‘Rockin’ At Midnight’, ‘Boogie At Midnight’ en afsluiter ‘Ain’t No Rocking No More’. Indrukwekkend zijn het eerder door een blanke rocker verwacht gebrachte ‘Hip Shakin’ Baby’ en ‘We’re Goin’ Rockin’ Tonight’. Om maar te zeggen dat Roy Brown een geweldige artiest was die zich in elke muziekvorm met verve kon inleven. Opmerkelijk is ook ‘Butcher Pete’ dat je hier in deel 1 en 2 krijgt, in totaal 5 minuten. Fats Domino mocht dan het grootste succes oogstten met het door Dave Bartholomew en hemzelf geschreven ‘Let The Four Winds Blow’, maar onder ons gezegd is Browns versie puurder en authentieker. Doorwinterde bluesfans kennen zeker ‘Ain’t Gonna Do It’ in een coverversie van Kim Wilson. Hier hoor je  Roys versie die toch heel wat overtuigender klinkt. Voor een knap stukje gitaarwerk van Jimmy Davis, kan je dan weer terecht bij ‘Letter From Home’.
 ‘I’ve Got The Last Laugh Now’ en ‘Gal From Kokomo’ leunen dan eerder nog aan bij de rockende rhythm & blues. ‘Mr. Hound Dog’s In Town’ lijkt dan weer enorm op Big Mama Thorntons ‘Hound Dog’, dat in 1952, een jaar eerder dan het nummer van Brown, opgenomen werd. Roys talent als bluesshouter komt met klasse aan de oppervlakte in o.a. ‘Riding High’, ‘Good Man Blues’ en ‘Cadillac Baby’.
‘Roy Brown Rocks’ neemt je op een formidabele manier mee naar de tijd toen de rockende rhythm & blues de voorloper was voor de opkomende rock-‘n-roll en Roy Brown is daar de meest geschikte artiest voor. Laat dat duidelijk zijn!

It is generally known that rhythm & blues was the breeding ground for the advancement of rock 'n' roll. While the transition was initially labeled as rocking rhythm & blues, it would eventually become rock 'n' roll. A number of artists, although they were usually unable to capitalize on this, laid the foundation for rock 'n' roll with their rocking rhythm & blues. One of them was certainly blues shouter Roy Brown, whose work is now being spotlighted by Bear Family Records. The CD contains 30 tracks that Brown recorded for the DeLuxe label, where he scored his biggest hits between 1948 and 1951. You also get his recordings for the King label (1952-1955) and those for Imperial Records (1956-1958) when legendary New Orleans artist Dave Bartholomew helped launch Brown's comeback.
It is also remarkable that in addition to being an impressive performer, Roy was also a memorable songwriter. No fewer than 25 of the 30 songs on this compilation came from his pen, or he was involved as a co-writer. His 'Good Rockin' Tonight' from 1947 opened the door wide for the rock 'n' roll that was in the starting blocks. Opener 'Saturday Nite', which Roy recorded in 1956, the heyday of rock 'n' roll, also proves this. Other sublime rockers are certainly 'Rockin' At Midnight', 'Boogie At Midnight' and closing track 'Ain't No Rocking No More'. The 'Hip Shakin' Baby' and 'We're Goin' Rockin' Tonight', you would rather expect performed by a white rocker, are impressive. Just to say that Roy Brown was a great artist who could embody any form of music with verve. Also noteworthy is 'Butcher Pete', which you get here in parts 1 and 2, a total of 5 minutes. Fats Domino may have had the greatest success with 'Let The Four Winds Blow', written by Dave Bartholomew and Fats himself, but Brown’s version sounds purer and more authentic. Real blues fans certainly know 'Ain't Gonna Do It' in a cover version by Kim Wilson. Here you hear Roy's version, which sounds a lot more convincing.  'I've Got The Last Laugh Now' and 'Gal From Kokomo' lean more towards rocking rhythm & blues. ‘Mr. Hound Dog's In Town' is very similar to Big Mama Thornton's 'Hound Dog', which was recorded in 1952, a year earlier than Brown's song. Roy's talent as a blues shouter comes to the surface with class in, among others, 'Riding High', 'Good Man Blues' and 'Cadillac Baby'.
'Roy Brown Rocks' takes you in a formidable way to the time when rocking rhythm & blues was the precursor to the emerging rock 'n' roll and Roy Brown is the most suitable artist for that. Let that be clear!
