​The Ford Motor Company werd op 16.06.1903 gesticht door Henry Ford. In datzelfde jaar boekte Ford zijn eerste succes met de productie van het ‘Model A’. Een model dat eind jaren ’40 enorm populair was als basis voor het ontwerpen en bouwen van Hot Rods. Na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog waren het ’T model’ (1910-1920), het ‘As model’ (1928-1931) en het ‘Bs model’ (1932-1934) bij de liefhebbers van Hot Rods enorm geliefd. In de fifties waren het de ‘rockers’ die er races voor organiseerden. In het meer luxueuze segment van de autobranche scoorde Ford met de Lincoln, genoemd naar president Abraham Lincoln. Toch waren niet alle modellen die Ford op de markt bracht succesvol. De Fords uit 1949 tot 1951 werden bestempeld als ‘shoe box cars’ en de Ford Edsel, genoemd naar Henrys zoon, was een commerciële flop. De oorzaken van het uitblijven van succes waren het uiterlijk, de economische recessie, het prijsprobleem en de talrijke productieproblemen, zoals defecte lasnaden, lekkende koffers en problemen met de stuurbekrachtiging.
Ford breidde later zijn vestigingen wereldwijd uit, wat het merk heel wat naambekendheid gaf. Door de jaren heen kocht Ford ook Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar en Aston Martin.
Redenen genoeg om Ford, met zijn 121 jarig jubileum in de spots te plaatsen aan de hand van 30 songs van bekende en minder bekende artiesten. De songs kunnen de naam ‘Ford’ in de lyrics hebben of de bands hebben als naam een Ford model gekozen.
‘Start the engine and let’s go’! Wie meteen door de speakers klinkt is Curtis Gordon, die met ‘Draggin’’ een dijk van een rockabillysong neerzet. Curtis wordt gevolgd door klasbak Gene Vincent die het over zijn ‘Pink Thunderbird’ heeft, ‘with a red fur seat’. Ook Eddie Cochran eerde Ford met  ‘Pink Peg Slacks’ en in ‘Somethin’ Else’.
Meer bekend volk komt er met Janis Martin. Zij transformeerde Buck Griffins ‘Let’s Elope Baby’ in een heuse rock-‘n-roller. ‘She had a high speed motor in a 44 coupe’, daarmee imponeerde de rockende ‘Hot Rod Baby’ Rocky Davis. Lefty Nicks steekt zijn ‘Model A-Ford Blues’ eerder in een authentiek countrybluesjasje. Het T-model inspireerde Rosco Gordon dan weer voor zijn ‘T-Model Boogie’. Willie Love had meer zin in een straffere motor. Hij koos voor ‘V8 Ford’, nummer dat eerder een slowbluessfeer ademt. Een fraai stukje bluesharp zit knap vervat in ‘Mercury Boogie’ van K.C Douglas Trio.
Een heerlijke coverversie van Hank Williams’ ‘Hey Good Lookin’’ presenteert Betty Rogers. Ook Buddy Knox koos voor een cover. Hij nam Chuck Berrys ‘Maybellene’ onder handen en gaf het een prima rockabilly twist.
Voor schitterende doo-wop kan je dan weer terecht bij The Fairlanes en ‘Johnny Rhythm’. The Fairlanes duiken later nog op samen met leadzanger Charles Perrywell in ‘Come Along With Me’, dat toch wel een Chuck Berry kantje heeft. Chuck Berry himself krijg je in ‘Jaguar and Thunderbird’.
Meer doo-wop komt er met de band die als groepsnaam koos voor een Ford model, namelijk The Edsels. Zij gaan uptempo tekeer in ‘Shake Sherry Shake’. Ook The Lincolns kozen op dezelfde manier voor hun groepsnaam. Zij zijn aanwezig met het eveneens uptempo ‘Pleasin’ You – Pleases Me’.
Prachtige samenzang komt er tevens met de vocale damesgroep The Delicates in ‘Black And White Thunderbird’. Een andere vocale groep The Paramounts kozen voor hetzelfde model met ‘Thunderbird Baby’. Instrumentaal rocken kan je zeker op het door sax voortgestuwde ‘What’s The Word’ van The Thunder Rocks. Een andere leuke instrumental serveert Sunset Dragster’s Orchestra . Hoe een Thunderbird hoort te klinken, hoor je in hun ‘Boss T Bird’.
Het album eindigt met het op een hillbilly instrumentale achtergrond ‘spoken’ ‘Arkie Meets The Judge’ van Arkie Shibley and The Mountain Dew Boys.
‘121 Years Of The Ford Car’ is niet alleen een mooie ode aan een automerk dat de mobiliteit voor het grote publiek mogelijk maakte, maar biedt ook een verzameling sublieme songs in genres als blues, rock-‘n-roll, rockabilly en hillbilly. Over het asfalt in de auto, of gewoon thuis in je vertrouwde omgeving is dit album zeker een aanrader.

The Ford Motor Company was founded on June 16, 1903 by Henry Ford. That same year, Ford achieved its first success with the production of the 'Model A'. A model that was extremely popular in the late 1940s as a basis for designing and building Hot Rods. After the end of the Second World War, the 'T model' (1910-1920), the 'As model' (1928-1931) and the 'Bs model' (1932-1934) were extremely popular among Hot Rod enthusiasts. 'Start the engine and let's go'! Who immediately sounds through the speakers is Curtis Gordon, who delivers a hell of a rockabilly song with 'Draggin''. Curtis is followed by class act Gene Vincent who talks about his 'Pink Thunderbird', 'with a red fur seat'. Eddie Cochran also honored Ford with 'Pink Peg Slacks' and in 'Somethin' Else'.

A beautiful piece of blues harp is cleverly contained in 'Mercury Boogie' by K.C Douglas Trio.
Betty Rogers presents a wonderful cover version of Hank Williams' 'Hey Good Lookin''. Buddy Knox also opted for a cover. He took Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' and gave it a great rockabilly twist.
For beautiful doo-wop you can go to The Fairlanes and 'Johnny Rhythm'. The Fairlanes later appear together with lead singer Charles Perrywell in 'Come Along With Me', which has a Chuck Berry edge. You get Chuck Berry himself in 'Jaguar and Thunderbird'.
More doo-wop comes with the band that chose a Ford model as the group name, namely The Edsels. They go up-tempo in 'Shake Sherry Shake'. The Lincolns also chose their group name in the same way. They are present with the also uptempo 'Pleasin' You - Pleases Me'.
There is also beautiful harmony singing with the vocal women's group The Delicates in 'Black And White Thunderbird'. Another vocal group The Paramounts chose the same model with 'Thunderbird Baby'. You can certainly rock on the sax-driven instrumental 'What's The Word' by The Thunder Rocks. Another nice instrumental serves up Sunset Dragster's Orchestra. You can hear what a Thunderbird should sound like in their 'Boss T Bird'.
The album ends with 'Arkie Meets The Judge' by Arkie Shibley and The Mountain Dew Boys, set to a hillbilly instrumental background.
'121 Years Of The Ford Car' is not only a beautiful ode to a car brand that made mobility possible for the general public, but also offers a collection of sublime songs in genres such as blues, rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and hillbilly. This album is definitely recommended on a long car trip, or at home in your familiar surroundings. The choice is yours!
