Het Duitse Bear Family Records startte in 2002 met de ‘Rocks’ serie. Inmiddels zijn in die serie reeds meer dan 70 cd’s uitgebracht die telkens een rhythm & blues- of rocklegende in de spots plaatste. De nieuwe serie ‘Bear Family Rocks’, waarvan nu het eerste volume verscheen, brengt een bloemlezing van songs uit die immense ‘Rocks’ serie. Een serie trouwens die nog steeds niet aan zijn einde toe is, want regelmatig komen er nog nieuwe releases in de deze serie op de markt. Zo zal je binnenkort op deze site de reviews kunnen lezen van ‘Rocks’ uitgaves gewijd aan Benny Joy en Eddie Bond. Laten we echter hier niet op vooruit lopen en eerst onze volle aandacht schenken aan ‘Bear Family Records Rocks, Vol. 1’, dat zowel rock-‘n-roll, blues als jump rhythm & blues bevat. Vanzelfsprekend zijn er dan ook artiesten met klinkende namen hierop terug te vinden. Voor indrukwekkende New Orleans rhythm & blues tekenen o.a. Fats Domino, Lloyd Price en shouter Smiley Lewis. Baanbrekende en invloedrijke gitaristen komen aan bod met Bo Diddley met zijn handelsmerk de ‘diddley beat’ en Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, hier met het formidabele instrumentale ‘Boogie Uproar’. Chuck Berry en Little Richard worden algemeen beschouwd als pioniers van de rock-‘n-roll, maar zonder Big Joe Turner, Amos Milburn en Roy Milton die de rock-‘n-rollweg voor hen plaveiden, zou het genre meer dan waarschijnlijk niet zijn ontstaan. Allen zijn ze vertegenwoordigd op deze compilatie. Rockende rhythm & blues mag je dan weer verwachten van kleppers als Jimmy McCracklin, Jimmy Reed, Little Junior Parker, Arthur Crudup, Champion Jack Dupree, Ella Mae Morse, Piano Red, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins en Slim Harpo. De jaren vijftig waren ook de jaren van de vocale groepen, die met hun mix van doo-wop en rockende rhythm & blues voor heerlijke opnames zorgden. Deze stemgiganten zijn vertegenwoordigd door o.a. The Coasters, The Midnighters, The “5” Royales, The Platters en The Cadillacs. Hemelse samenzang kenmerkt trouwens ook ‘No Sweet Love’ van The Drifters, alsook ‘Poon-Tang’ van The Treniers. Zij worden gevolgd door Louis Prima en het swingende ‘Jump, Jive An’ Wail’. Voor rhythm & blues op een soulvolle manier kan je rekenen op ‘Deep See Ball’ van Clyde McPhatter. Voor een rustpuntje zorgt dan weer Amos Milburn met ‘One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer’.
Het album bevat 29 tracks van 29 verschillende artiesten. Artiesten die allen individueel op een volume uit de ‘Rocks’ serie aan bod kwamen. Als Johnny Otis kreeg hij reeds zijn ‘Rocks’ volume, maar nog niet met The Johnny Otis Show. Die krijg je nu wel als plustrack met ‘Good Golly’.
In het 34 pagina’s tellende booklet, krijg je naast info rond de artiesten en de songs ook foto’s van de covers van de ‘Rocks’ releases waarop zij aan bod kwamen.
Verzamelaars die alle reeds verschenen volumes in de ‘Rocks’ serie in hun bezit hebben, zullen aan deze nieuwe serie niet veel hebben. Heb je echter niet alle volumes of zet je je eerste stappen in de wereld van uitstekende rock-‘n-roll en rhythm & blues uit het midden van de vorige eeuw, dan is ‘Bear Family Records Rocks, Vol. 1’ een uitstekende keuze.

The German Bear Family Records started the 'Rocks' series in 2002. More than 70 CDs have now been released in that series, each spotlighting a rhythm & blues or rock legend. The new series 'Bear Family Rocks', of which the first volume has now been published, brings an anthology of songs from that immense 'Rocks' series. A series that is still not at its end, because new releases in this series regularly come onto the market. You will soon be able to read the reviews of 'Rocks' releases dedicated to Benny Joy and Eddie Bond on this site. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves and first pay our full attention to 'Bear Family Records Rocks, Vol. 1', which contains rock 'n' roll, blues and jump rhythm & blues. Naturally, artists with well-known names can be found here. Fats Domino, Lloyd Price and shouter Smiley Lewis provide impressive New Orleans rhythm & blues. Pioneering and influential guitarists are featured with Bo Diddley with his trademark the 'diddley beat' and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, here with the formidable instrumental 'Boogie Uproar'. Chuck Berry and Little Richard are widely regarded as pioneers of rock 'n' roll, but without Big Joe Turner, Amos Milburn and Roy Milton paving the way for rock 'n' roll before them, the genre would more than likely not be to arise. They are all represented on this compilation. You can expect rocking rhythm & blues from top performers such as Jimmy McCracklin, Jimmy Reed, Little Junior Parker, Arthur Crudup, Champion Jack Dupree, Ella Mae Morse, Piano Red, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Slim Harpo. The fifties were also the years of the vocal groups, who made wonderful recordings with their mix of doo-wop and rocking rhythm & blues. These voice giants are represented by The Coasters, The Midnighters, The “5” Royales, The Platters and The Cadillacs. Heavenly harmony also characterizes 'No Sweet Love' by The Drifters, as well as 'Poon-Tang' by The Treniers. They are followed by Louis Prima and the swinging 'Jump, Jive An' Wail'. For rhythm & blues in a soulful way you can count on 'Deep See Ball' by Clyde McPhatter. Amos Milburn provides a moment of rest with 'One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer'.
The album contains 29 tracks from 29 different artists. Artists who were all featured individually on a volume from the 'Rocks' series. As Johnny Otis he already got his 'Rocks' volume, but not yet with The Johnny Otis Show. You now get them as a plus track with 'Good Golly'.
In the 34-page booklet, in addition to information about the artists and the songs, you also get photos of the covers of the 'Rocks' releases on which they were featured.
Collectors who own all previously published volumes in the 'Rocks' series will not have much use for this new series. However, if you don't have all the volumes or are taking your first steps into the world of excellent fifties rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues, 'Bear Family Records Rocks, Vol. 1' is an excellent choice.
