Insecten en spinnen doen een groot deel van de mensen niet alleen met Halloween schrikken. Op ieder moment van het jaar jagen ze velen de stuipen op het lijf. Insecten en spinnen zullen je op deze door Bear Family Records uitgebrachte compilatie, niet doen schrikken. Integendeel zelfs, de 28 songs op dit album zullen je met volle teugen doen genieten. Zodanig dat je jezelf niet meer kan voorstellen dat deze diertjes je bij het zien op hol doen slaan. 28 tracks bevat het album, die allen tussen 1937 en 1966 opgenomen werden en waarvan een groot deel knappe instrumentals zijn. Ook nu weer worden bekende artiesten gekoppeld aan minder bekende en misschien zelfs voor jou volslagen onbekende namen. Starten doen we ook instrumentaal met gitaarwizzard Buddy Merrill en ‘Green Hornet Theme’. En ook opvolger ‘Hornet’s Nest’ van Curtis Knight and The Squires doet het zonder vocalen. De leadgitaar wordt hier bespeeld door Jimi Hendrix. Hier hoor je reeds dat hij een enorm talent bezat op de zes snaren. Wanneer je aan een vibrafonist denkt, dan schiet de naam van Lionel Hampton je onmiddellijk voor de geest. Zijn kunde op de vibrafoon laat hij nogmaals horen op het instrumentale ‘Buzzin’ Around With The Bee’, opgenomen in 1937 en meteen de oudste opname hier, maar ze heeft nog niets aan kracht ingeboet. Een razendsnelle piano vormt dan weer de basis voor Winifred Atwell’s ‘Bumble Boogie’. Meer interessant instrumentaal werk komt er o.a. met Martin Denny die in ‘Tsetse Fly’ één van de gevaarlijkste insecten onder de aandacht brengt of The Nobles die een ander gevaarlijk individu instrumentaal kaderen in het door gitaar voortgestuwde ‘Black Widow’. De Amerikaanse sciencefictionfilm uit 1955 ‘Tarantula’ inspireerde dan weer Bob Regan, Bruce Gist and The Invaders, The Tarantulas en The Storms voor instrumentale songs met dezelfde titel. Zwoel en jazzy ga je vinden bij ‘The Web’ van Abie ‘Available’ Baker. Een portie instrumentale rock-‘n-roll serveren The Swing Kings in ‘The Bug’, alsook Link Davis met ‘Beatle Bug’.
Twistend boekte Chubby Checker groot succes. Hier wijdt hij zich aan een nieuwe dans, namelijk ‘The Fly’. Grappig klinkt dan weer de conversatie tussen ‘The Spider And The Fly’ van John Zacherley. Voor een portie rock-‘n-roll kan je terecht bij Jack Hammer in ‘Black Widow Spider Woman’ en rockabillygewijs werkt Gene Maltais zich door ‘The Bug’. Wie kent er nog jazzgitarist Freddy Sunder? Hij maakte eind jaren ’50 en begin zestiger jaren deel uit van het toenmalige BRT Orkest onder leiding van Francis Bay. Hier hoor je Sunder in het aanstekelijke ‘Cucaracha Boogie’ uit 1953. Het insect Boll Weevil dat op katoenvelden te vinden was, vormt de basis voor Brook Bentons ‘spoken’ ‘The Boll Weevil Song’.
Verder ook nog inspirerend vocaal werk van o.a. LaVern Baker en ‘Godfather of Country’ Hank Williams. In het 16 pagina’s tellend booklet, met zeldzame foto’s van artiesten en memorabilia gidst Marc Mittelacher je door alle tracks.
‘Beware! Insects And Spiders!’ zal je niet doen schrikken, genieten echter des te meer.

Insects and spiders don't just scare a lot of people at Halloween. They scare many people at any time of the year. Insects and spiders won't scare you on this compilation released by Bear Family Records. On the contrary, the 28 songs on this album will make you enjoy it to the fullest. To such an extent that you can no longer imagine that these little animals make you run wild when you see them. The album contains 28 tracks, all of which were recorded between 1937 and 1966 and many of which are beautiful instrumentals. Once again, well-known artists are linked to lesser-known and perhaps even completely unknown names. We also start instrumentally with guitar wizard Buddy Merrill and 'Green Hornet Theme'. And successor 'Hornet's Nest' by Curtis Knight and The Squires also does without vocaal. The lead guitar here is played by Jimi Hendrix. Here you can already hear that he had an enormous talent on the six strings. When you think of a vibraphonist, Lionel Hampton's name immediately comes to mind. He once again demonstrates his skills on the vibraphone on the instrumental 'Buzzin' Around With The Bee', recorded in 1937 and the oldest recording here, but it has not lost any of its power. A lightning-fast piano forms the basis for Winifred Atwell's 'Bumble Boogie'. More interesting instrumental work is coming, including Martin Denny who draws attention to one of the most dangerous insects in 'Tsetse Fly' or The Nobles who instrumentally frame another dangerous individual in the guitar-driven 'Black Widow'. The 1955 American science fiction film 'Tarantula' inspired Bob Regan, Bruce Gist and The Invaders, The Tarantulas and The Storms for instrumental songs with the same title. You will find sultry and jazzy with 'The Web' by Abie 'Available' Baker. The Swing Kings serve up a portion of instrumental rock 'n' roll in 'The Bug', as well as Link Davis with 'Beate Bug'.
Twisting, Chubby Checker achieved great success. Here he discovers himself to a new dance, namely 'The Fly'. The conversation between 'The Spider And The Fly' by John Zacherley sounds funny. For a dose of rock 'n' roll you can go to Jack Hammer in 'Black Widow Spider Woman' and in terms of rockabilly, Gene Maltais works his way through 'The Bug'. Who still knows jazz guitarist Freddy Sunder? In the late 1950s and early 1960s he was part of the then BRT Orchestra conducted by Francis Bay. Here you hear Sunder in the catchy 'Cucaracha Boogie' from 1953. The insect Boll Weevil that could be found in cotton fields forms the basis for Brook Benton's spoken 'The Boll Weevil Song'.
