​De ‘Black Pearls’ serie gaat in totaal 10 volumes bevatten. Met ‘Get Your Enjoys!’ zitten we momenteel dus net over de helft. De 10 volumes zijn zeker te verrechtvaardigen, immers er liggen een hoop nog niet ontdekte parels van songs te wachten. ‘Get Your Enjoys!’ mag je dan ook letterlijk nemen, want samensteller Ronni Boysen zocht opnieuw 28 songs bij elkaar die je zeker zullen weten te bekoren. Williams Brothers mogen starten met ‘Young Girl’, nummer dat tevens kan bogen op een aanstekelijke samenzang en dat zeker ook in popcornmiddens zal gesmaakt worden. Voor een traag uitermate soulvolle song zorgt even later de alombekende T-Bone Walker in ‘Evening’. Walker nam het nummer voor de eerste maal op in 1945 voor het Rhumboogie label. In 1959 nam hij het opnieuw op voor Atlantic en maakte hij er de topper van die je hier te horen krijgt. Soul maakt ook duidelijk deel uit van ‘I Want To Love You’ van Kenny & Moe. In dat genre situeert zich ook het heerlijke ‘ As Quiet As It’s Kept’ van Billy Guy. Van 1955 tot 1973 was hij tevens de leadzanger van The Coasters, die met ‘Yakety Yak’ een wereldhit scoorden. De titeltrack ‘Get Your Enjoys!’ is ontleend aan Eunice Davis, die er een sexy rhythm & blues mee neerzet. ‘So Blue’ van Bobby Williams is dan eerder een rhythm & bluesnummer dat ook een ietwat New Orleanssfeer ademt. Een voortreffelijke doo-woptrack mag je verwachten van The Lamplighters in ‘Hug A Little’, dat geschreven werd door Johnny Otis. Niet onbekend is zeker Billy ‘The Kid’ Emerson, hier nog geafficheerd als Billy Emerson met ‘If Love Is Believing’. Songs van Emerson werden gecoverd door o.a. Billy Riley, Elvis Presley, Robert Gordon en Link Wray. Little Buck maakte deel uit van de band The Clowns van Huey ‘Piano’ Smith. Diens invloeden zijn ook hoorbaar in ‘So Fine, So Sweet’ wat Buck opnam voor het Duke label. Buck wordt gevolgd door Priscilla Bowman die met ‘Sugar Daddy’ een heerlijke popcornsong aflevert. Bowman is vooral gekend door ‘A Rockin’ Good Way’ dat zij in de originele versie opnam. Het nummer vond daarna zijn weg naar het grote publiek in de versie van o.a. Shakin’ Stevens & Bonnie Tyler. Popcorn zit ook in de genen van ‘Nobody’s Gonna Hurt You’ van Annie Laurie. Young Jessie was een veelzijdig artiest, die zowel in de rhythm & blues, rock-‘n-roll en jazz bedrijvig was. Met ‘Do You Love Me’ trekt hij hier de kaart van rockende rhythm & blues. Dat zijn ritme doorsnee was, kan je van Smoky Hogg niet zeggen. Ook in ‘Good Mornin’ Baby’ etaleert hij het hem kenmerkende opzwepende en aparte ritme. ‘Bon Ton Roula’ leverde Clarence Garlow een ferme hit op. Hier krijg je met ‘Sound The Bell’, de andere zijde van die single met dubbele A kant. Vrouwelijke artiesten en rhythm & blues vormen steeds een goede match. Overtuig jezelf met Varetta Dillard in ‘That’s Why I Cry’. Binnen de West Coastblues en rhythm & blues was Jimmy McCracklin als pianist, songwriter en orkestleider niet weg te denken. Terecht als je hem hier hoort op ‘Beer Tavern Girl’. Volslagen onbekend, voor mij dan toch, is Quinton Kimble. Gelukkig leer ik hem hier kennen via ‘My Mojo and My Loadstone’ een parel van een song. Big Maybelle kennen we dan weer wel als één van de grote vrouwelijke rhythm & bluesartiesten. Dat maakt zij voor de volle 100 % waar in het zwoele ‘Goin’ Home Baby’. Wat een stem! Afsluiten is voorbehouden aan Sonny Thompson. Thomspon was arrangeur, sessiepianist, orkestleider en songschrijver. In die laatste hoedanigheid werkte hij ook vaak samen met bluesgigant Freddie King. Als pianist geeft hij het beste van zichzelf in ‘Loco Limbo’.
Zoals je ziet heeft volume 6 in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie weer heel wat fraais te bieden. Ga op ontdekkingstocht en overtuig jezelf. Je zult versteld staan!

The 'Black Pearls' series will contain a total of 10 volumes. We are currently just over halfway done with 'Get Your Enjoys!' The 10 volumes are certainly justified, after all, there are a lot of undiscovered gems of songs waiting to be released. You can take 'Get Your Enjoys!' literally, because compiler Ronni Boysen has once again collected 28 songs that will certainly delight you. The Williams Brothers can start with 'Young Girl', a song that also boasts catchy harmony vocals and that will certainly be enjoyed by popcorn crowds. A little later the well-known T-Bone Walker provides a slow, extremely soulful song in 'Evening'. Walker first recorded the song in 1945 for the Rhumboogie label. In 1959 he recorded it again for Atlantic and turned it into the hit verson you hear here. Soul is also clearly part of 'I Want To Love You' by Kenny & Moe. You can't say about Smoky Hogg that his rhythm was average. He also displays his characteristic exciting and special rhythm in 'Good Mornin' Baby'. 'Bon Ton Roula' gave Clarence Garlow a big hit. Here you get 'Sound The Bell', the other side of that single with the double A side. Female artists and rhythm & blues are always a good match. Convince yourself with Varetta Dillard in 'That's Why I Cry'. Jimmy McCracklin was an indispensable part of West Coast blues and rhythm & blues as a pianist, songwriter and orchestra leader. Rightly so if you hear him here on 'Beer Tavern Girl'. Completely unknown, to me anyway, is Quinton Kimble. Fortunately, I got to know him here through 'My Mojo and My Loadstone', a gem of a song. We know Big Maybelle as one of the great female rhythm & blues artists. She realizes this 100% in the sultry 'Goin' Home Baby'. What a voice! Closing is reserved for Sonny Thompson. Thomspon was an arranger, session pianist, orchestra leader and songwriter. In the latter capacity he also often collaborated with blues giant Freddie King. As a pianist he gives the best of himself in 'Loco Limbo'.
As you can see, volume 6 in the 'Black Pearls' series has a lot to offer again. Go on a journey of discovery and convince yourself. You will be amazed!
