​Het schiet aardig op met de ‘Black Pearls’ serie, waarvan inmiddels reeds het achtste volume met de titel ‘Down In The Basement’ verscheen. Samensteller Ronni Boysen verzamelde ook nu weer 28 tracks die alle hoeken van de Amerikaanse rootsmuziek bevatten. Bunker Hill mag de spits afbijten met ‘You Can’t Make Me Doubt My Baby’. Bunker begon zijn muzikale carrière met de gospelgroep The Mighty Clouds Of Joy en dat hoor je aan zijn krachtige stem. Hier zet hij een met minimale begeleiding energieke rhythm & blues neer. Met The Contours en ‘Whole Lotta Woman’, een compositie van Motownbaas Benny Gordy krijgen we een tof samengaan van rhythm & blues en doo-wop. Rhythm & blues wordt eerder gelinkt aan soul door Cookie Jackson. Samen met The Zeke Strong Band laat zij een knap ‘Do You Still Love Me’ horen. Rhythm & blues en soul zitten ook verpakt in ‘Your Letter’ van Willie Wright & His Sparklers. Nog meer soul bevat ‘I Won’t Be Your Fool’ van Little Joe Hinton. Iemand waarvan meerdere nummers gecoverd werden is Arthur Alexander. Hier hoor je zijn debuut ‘The Girl That Radiates That Charm’ en staat hij gelabeld als June (for Junior) Alexander. Johnny Torrence lag aan de basis van de vocale groep The Jewels. Ook op ‘Your Lover Man’ krijgt hij backing vocals ondersteuning. Rauwe en doorleefde rhythm & blues is het handelsmerk van Gino Parks. Luister en overtuig jezelf tijdens ‘Same Thing’. Meer prachtige samenzang laten ook The Metallics horen in ‘Get Lost’ en The Originals in ‘Little Lonely Girl’. Dat geldt zeker ook voor de bekende The “5” Royales in ‘They Don’t Know’ en voor The Clovers in ‘One More Time’. De titeltrack van dit album komt van King Coleman en let vooral ook op de knappe backing vocals die de song een heel aparte twist geven. Wie je met een stomende rhythm & blues van je sokken blaast is Helen Troy met ‘I Think I Love You’. Schenk ook aandacht aan de indrukwekkende blazers. Heel apart klinkt ‘I’m Going Home’ van Prince Conley, waarbij de blazers voor een ietwat ska sfeertje zorgen. Een zeldzame opname is ‘Playboy’ van Billy Ray. Hij nam het in 1961 op voor het Kent label. Gelukkig staat ze op deze compilatie want het is een meer dan fantastisch nummer. Ook over de vocale damesgroep The Vonns is weinig geweten. Feit is wel dat ze met ‘So Many Days’, hun enige opname overigens, een dijk van een dansbare song hadden. Bij bluesfans zal de naam van zanger en mondharmonicaspeler George Harmonica Smith zeker een belletje doen rinkelen. Smith werkte ook samen met Muddy Waters en Big Mama Thornton. Hier is hij te horen onder de naam George Allen met ‘Come On Home’, een pracht van een rhythm & bluesnummer, waar hij knap soleert op de bluesharp. Een andere bluesgrootheid is bassist en componist Willie Dixon. Hier backt hij met zijn band Billy Emerson in ‘I’ll Get You’, een compositie van beide heren, waarin Dixons invloed duidelijk hoorbaar is. Afsluiten is voorbehouden voor Jimmy Lewis, die hier een voortreffelijke Northern Soulsong neerzet met ‘Feelin in Mah Bones’. Lewis’ nummers werden gecoverd door o.a. Bobby Bland, Little Richard, Solomon Burke en Bobby Womack.
Net als de vorige volumes in deze serie is ook volume 8 weer een schot in de roos. Nog 2 volumes te gaan, waarvan volume 9 ‘Let’s Have Some Fun’ volgende maand verschijnt. Uitkijken geblazen!

Things are going well with the 'Black Pearls' series, of which the eighth volume entitled 'Down In The Basement' has already been released. Compiler Ronni Boysen once again collected 28 tracks that cover all corners of American roots music. Bunker Hill can start off with 'You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby'. Bunker started his musical career with the gospel group The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and you can hear it in his powerful voice. Here he plays an energetic rhythm & blues with minimal accompaniment. With The Contours and 'Whole Lotta Woman', a composition by Motown boss Benny Gordy, we get a great combination of rhythm & blues and doo-wop. Rhythm & blues is previously linked to soul by Cookie Jackson. Together with The Zeke Strong Band she performs a beautiful 'Do You Still Love Me'. Rhythm & blues and soul are also included in 'Your Letter' by Willie Wright & His Sparklers. Even more soul contains 'I Won't Be Your Fool' by Little Joe Hinton. Someone who has had several songs covered is Arthur Alexander. Here you can hear his debut 'The Girl That Radiates That Charm' and he is labeled as June (for Junior) Alexander. Johnny Torrence was the founder of the vocal group The Jewels. He also receives backing vocals support on 'Your Lover Man'. Raw and lived-in rhythm & blues is Gino Parks' trademark. Listen and convince yourself during 'Same Thing'. The Metallics also show more beautiful harmony vocals in 'Get Lost' and The Originals in 'Little Lonely Girl'. This certainly also applies to the well-known The “5” Royales in 'They Don't Know' and to The Clovers in 'One More Time'. The title track of this album comes from King Coleman and pay particular attention to the beautiful backing vocals that give the song a very special twist. Who will blow your socks off with steamy rhythm & blues is Helen Troy with 'I Think I Love You'. Also pay attention to the impressive horn section. 'I'm Going Home' by Prince Conley sounds very special, with the horns providing a somewhat ska atmosphere. A rare recording is 'Playboy' by Billy Ray. He recorded it in 1961 for the Kent label. Fortunately it is on this compilation because it is a more than fantastic song. Little is also known about the vocal women's group The Vonns. The fact is that with 'So Many Days', their only recording by the way, they had a hell of a danceable song. For blues fans, the name of singer and harmonica player George Harmonica Smith will certainly ring a bell. Smith also worked with Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton. Here he can be heard under the name George Allen with 'Come On Home', a beautiful rhythm & blues song, where he solos cleverly on the blues harp. Just like the previous volumes in this series, volume 8 is another hit. Still 2 volumes to go, of which volume 9 'Let's Have Some Fun' will be released next month. Looking forward to it!
