​Met ‘Rhythm Rockin’ Boogie’ is samensteller en ex lid van The Kokomo Kings Ronni Boysen aan zijn vierde volume toe in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie. Zoals de titel reeds aangeeft, mag je op dit volume een aantal rockende bluesboogies verwachten. De legendarische koning van de bluesboogie John Lee Hooker mag het vuur aan de lont steken met ‘Who’s Been Jiving You’, een nummer dat de toen nog jonge Hooker in 1948 in Detroit opnam. Met opvolger ‘You’re Too Bad’ van Birmingham Junior and His Lover Boys, doet ook de bluesharp zijn intrede. Hound Dog Taylor staat bekend om zijn rauwe, recht uit het hart stromende boogies. Het hier opgenomen ‘Take Five’ behoort tot zijn bekendste songs. J.B. Hutto, meester op de slidegitaar, was Taylors oom en die leerde hem ook de kneepjes van het vak. Hutto zelf komt later nog aan de beurt met ‘Lovin’ You’, waarop je duidelijk hoort dat Taylor zijn sound naar die van Hutto modelleerde. Betty James werd geboren in Louisiana. De blues uit die regio klinkt ook door in ‘Henry Lee’. Frankie Lee Sims heeft in zijn loopbaan voor een aantal schitterende songs gezorgd. Bovendien was hij de neef van die andere grootheid Lightnin’ Hopkins. Die hoor je later nog als uitmuntende gitarist op het instrumentale ‘Hopkins’ Sky Hop’. Sims hoor je hier op ‘Yeh, Baby’. Op dit nummer hoor je Mercy Baby aan de drums. Mercy Baby hoor je op zijn beurt dan weer onder eigen naam op ‘Pleadin’’. Sims was dan weer vaak te horen op opnames van Baby. Van vriendendiensten gesproken! Voor een knappe intro op de bluesharp kan je terecht bij ‘My Sweet Woman’ van Drifting Slim. Aan de piano zat niemand minder dan Ike Turner. Met Clifford King’s ‘Want To Jump With You Baby’ haal je niet alleen een formidabele boogie in huis, maar ook een uiterst zeldzame opname. De song werd destijds op slechts 500 exemplaren geperst. Een ander bekend figuur in de blueswereld is Lightnin’ Slim, ook wel vaak de koning van de Louisianablues genoemd. Slim nam gedurende 12 jaar op voor het Excello label, dat tevens de thuisbasis was voor Lazy Lester. Slim zet hier een opzwepend ‘Wonderin’ and Goin’’ neer. Little Junior was ook niet van de minsten. Hij werkte met o.a. Sonny Boy Williamson II en Howlin’ Wolf. Hier is hij aanwezig met het bekende ‘Love My Baby’ dat hij voor Sun opnam. Een veelzijdig artiest was Eddie Burns, ook wel Eddy ‘Guitar’ Burns genoemd. Naast gitarist, harmonicaspeler en zanger was hij ook een voortreffelijke songschrijver. Hiervan overtuigt hij moeiteloos in ‘Hello Miss Jessie’. Echt terug naar de essentie van de blues gaat Lena Hall in ‘What You Gonna Do’. Op wasbord hoor je Washboard Willie en gitarist van dienst was Calvin Frazier. Frazier komt onder eigen naam aan bod in ‘Little Mae’, nummer opgedragen aan zijn echtgenote. Een formidabele instrumentale bluesboogie op de mondharmonica serveren Confiners of Mississippi State Penetentary op het toepasselijke ‘Harmonica Boogie’. Doctor Ross was bekend om zijn ‘one man band’ waar hij zowel gitaar, mondharmonica als drums speelde. Dat hij dat voortreffelijk kon, bewijst hij op ‘Come Back Baby’. In de fifties en sixties was Earl Hooker een gerespecteerd gitarist in de Chicago bluesscene. Terecht zoals hij laat horen op het instrumentale ‘On The Hook’.  James Cotton werd één van de bekendste harmonicaspelers. Op ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’, een Sun opname, laat hij het instrument voor wat het is en concentreert hij zich op de zang. Naast de reeds eerder genoemde ‘one man band’ van Doctor Ross, opereerde ook Joe Hill Louis in zijn eentje. Hij mag afsluiten met ‘Gotta Go Baby’.
Met het vierde volume in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie krijg je 28 sublieme tracks die de bluesboogie hoog in het vaandel dragen. Een album dat op party’s gegarandeerd voor een overvolle dansvloer zorgt.

With 'Rhythm Rockin' Boogie', compiler and ex-member of The Kokomo Kings Ronni Boysen is on his fourth volume in the 'Black Pearls' series. As the title already indicates, you can expect some rocking blues boogies on this volume. The legendary king of the blues boogie John Lee Hooker can light the fuse with 'Who's Been Jiving You', a song that the then young Hooker recorded in Detroit in 1948. With the successor 'You're Too Bad' by Birmingham Junior and His Lover Boys, the blues harp also makes an appearance. Hound Dog Taylor is known for his raw, straight-from-the-heart boogies. 'Take Five' here is one of his best-known songs. J.B. Hutto, master of the slide guitar, was Taylor's uncle and he also taught him the tricks of the trade. Hutto himself comes up later with 'Lovin' You', on which you can clearly hear that Taylor modeled his sound on Hutto's. Betty James was born in Louisiana. The blues from that region is also reflected in 'Henry Lee'. Frankie Lee Sims has provided a number of beautiful songs in his career. Moreover, he was the cousin of that other great Lightnin' Hopkins. You can hear him later as an excellent guitarist on the instrumental 'Hopkins' Sky Hop'. You can hear Sims here on 'Yeh, Baby'. On this song Mercy Baby is on drums. In turn, you can hear Mercy Baby under his own name on 'Pleadin''. Sims was also often heard on Baby's recordings. Speaking of friendly services! James Cotton became one of the most famous harmonica players. On 'Hold Me In Your Arms', a Sun recording, he leaves the instrument behind and concentrates on the vocals. In addition to the aforementioned 'one man band' of Doctor Ross, Joe Hill Louis also operated on his own. He can close with 'Gotta Go Baby'.
With the fourth volume in the 'Black Pearls' series you get 28 sublime tracks that celebrate the blues boogie. An album that is guaranteed to ensure a packed dance floor at parties.
