​Vorig jaar verscheen het eerste volume van ‘Destination Jail’ en aangezien er nog heel wat nummers binnen de blues en rhythm & blues zijn die aan dit onderwerp gerelateerd zijn, komt er nu nog een tweede volume op de markt. Opnieuw krijg je 24 songs die allen betrekking hebben op het leven achter tralies. Een onderwerp dat vaak deel uitmaakte van lyrics in de blues en rhythm & blues. De zwarte gemeenschap was aanvankelijk slachtoffer van slavernij en dat zou deze gemeenschap nog lang achtervolgen. Van gelijke berechtiging was nog lang geen sprake. Zo werden zwarten vlugger dan blanken naar de gevangenis verwezen en zaten ze voor dezelfde feiten gepleegd door blanken, ook langere straffen uit.
De nummers op deze compilatie stammen uit de jaren ’50 en ’60 uit de vorige eeuw en worden uitgevoerd door zowel bekende als minder bekende en soms totaal onbekende artiesten. Het album start met ‘But Officer’ van Sonny Knight. Een wel heel apart nummer, waarbij de stem van de ‘officer’ vertolkt wordt door de sax en Sonny zich hopeloos probeert te verweren met ‘but officer’. Een groot aantal bekende namen zijn op dit album terug te vinden. Zo tref je Wynonie Harris aan met ‘Good Morning Judge’, een knappe swingende rhythm & blues. Dave Bartholomew wordt algemeen en terecht aanzien als de architect van de New Orleans rhythm & blues. Dat deed hij aan de hand van knappe composities. Eentje hiervan hoor je van Smiley Lewis met ‘Jailbird’. New Orleans rhythm & blues is ook de basis voor het rockende ‘Jail Bird’ van Sonny Knight. Eén van de meest gekende uitvoerders van de New Orleans rhythm & blues is Fats Domino. Dat etaleert hij hier nogmaals tijdens ‘Prisoner’s Song’. Bekend is zeker ook bluesmuzikant Lonesome Sundown. Met ‘My Home Is A Prison’ zet hij een meeslepende blues neer. Dat doen ook Eddie Boyd en Ottilie Patterson, respectievelijk in ‘I’m A Prisoner’ en ‘Jailhouse Blues’. Bluespianist Roosevelt Sykes is tevens van de partij, met het razendknappe ‘Jailbait’ dat zowel rhythm & blues als een snuifje jazz bevat. De bekende artiesten volgen mekaar in sneltempo op. Voor een heerlijke mix van rhythm & blues en soul ben je bij Billy Boy Arnold aan het goede adres, hier met ‘Prisoner’s Plea’. Een prachtige ‘downhome blues’ serveert Josh White met ‘Ball And Chain Blues’. T-Bone Walker was en is nog steeds voor vele gitaristen een voorbeeld, maar ook vocaal weet hij te imponeren, zoals in ‘Prison Blues’. Meer bekend volk passeert later nog met Magic Sam in ’21 Days In Jail’. Een formidabele, ietwat hilarische versie van ‘Riot In Cell Block No. 9’ krijg je van The Robins. Groep die later zou worden omgevormd tot The Coasters. Een fraai staaltje van harmonicablues krijg je met Willie Nix en zijn ‘Prison Bound Blues’. Nix werd beschuldigd van moord en heeft bijgevolg het gevangenisleven aan de lijve ondervonden. ‘Chain Gang’ is onsterfelijk gemaakt door Sam Cooke. Hier krijg je een vrouwelijke versie van Theola Kilgore, als ‘Chain Gang – The Sound Of My Man’. Mooie samenzang komt er met de vocale groep The Prisonaires, die trouwens ook stuk voor stuk in de Tennessee State Penitentiary verbleven. Met doo-wop en een beetje gospel mogen The Larks afsluiten in ‘When I Leave These Prison Walls’.
Het tweede volume van ‘Destination Jail’ heeft weer heel wat schitterende blues en rhythm & blues in de aanbieding. Zeker de moeite waard!

Last year the first volume of 'Destination Jail' was published and since there are still many songs within blues and rhythm & blues that are related to this, a second volume is now being released. Once again you get 24 songs that all relate to life behind bars. A subject that was often part of lyrics in the blues and rhythm & blues. The black community was initially victims of slavery and that would haunt this community for a long time. There was still no question of equal rights. For example, blacks were referred to prison more quickly than whites and they also served longer sentences for the same offenses committed by whites.
The songs on this compilation date from the 1950s and 1960s and are performed by both well-known and lesser-known and sometimes completely unknown artists. The album starts with 'But Officer' by Sonny Knight. A very special song, in which the voice of the 'officer' is performed by sax and Sonny tries hopelessly to defend himself with 'but officer'. A large number of well-known names can be found on this album. You will find Wynonie Harris with 'Good Morning Judge', a beautiful swinging rhythm & blues. Dave Bartholomew is generally and rightly regarded as the architect of New Orleans rhythm & blues. He did this on the basis of clever compositions. You can hear one of these from Smiley Lewis with 'Jailbird'. New Orleans rhythm & blues is also the basis for Sonny Knight's rocking 'Jail Bird'. One of the most famous performers of New Orleans rhythm & blues is Fats Domino. He showcases that again here during 'Prisoner's Song'. Blues musician Lonesome Sundown is certainly also well known. With 'My Home Is A Prison' he creates a compelling blues. Eddie Boyd and Ottilie Patterson also do this, in 'I'm A Prisoner' and 'Jailhouse Blues' respectively. Blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes is also present, with the extremely beautiful 'Jailbait', which contains both rhythm & blues and a pinch of jazz. The well-known artists follow each other in rapid succession. For a wonderful mix of rhythm & blues and soul, Billy Boy Arnold is the right one, here with 'Prisoner's Plea'. Josh White serves a beautiful 'down home blues' with 'Ball And Chain Blues'. T-Bone Walker was and still is an example for many guitarists, but he also knows how to impress vocally, such as in 'Prison Blues'. More famous people will later appear with Magic Sam in '21 Days In Jail'. A formidable, somewhat hilarious version of 'Riot In Cell Block No. 9' you get from The Robins. Group that would later be transformed into The Coasters. You get a nice example of harmonica blues with Willie Nix and his 'Prison Bound Blues'. Nix was accused of murder and therefore experienced prison life first-hand. 'Chain Gang' was immortalized by Sam Cooke. Here you get a female version of Theola Kilgore, as 'Chain Gang – The Sound Of My Man'. There is beautiful singing with the vocal group The Prisonaires, all of whom also stayed in the Tennessee State Penitentiary. The Larks close with doo-wop and a bit of gospel in 'When I Leave These Prison Walls'.
The second volume of 'Destination Jail' again has a lot of beautiful blues and rhythm & blues to offer. Definitely worth it!
