​Onlangs kon je op deze site de review lezen van ‘Rock House’, het eerste volume in de door het KokoMojo label uitgebrachte nieuwe reeks ‘Hi-Strung R & B’. Met ‘Chop Chop’ zet de serie zich verder en ook nu weer krijgen we 28 tracks die zowel rockende rhythm & blues als mooie doo-wop bevatten. Met Ralph Wilsons ‘What’s Shakin’’, een hoogvlieger binnen de rockende rhythm & blues steken we meteen van wal. Nummer dat schitterende sax- en gitaarsolo’s bevat. Wilson wordt gevolgd dor Pearl Bailey met ‘I Can’t Rock ‘N’ Roll To Save My Soul’. Een eerste keer door-wop krijgen we met The Fleetones in ‘Your Lover Man’. Meer in dat genre serveren The Chimes in de titeltrack en ook Jimmy Ricks with The Suburbans opereren in dat genre tijdens ‘Bad Man Of Missouri’. Opwindende samenzang serveren ook The Treniers, in het met handclaps opgesmukte ‘Go! Go! Go!. Heerlijke vocale prestaties tref je ook aan in ‘IFIC’ van The Chantels. Later zou hij een formidabele carrière uitbouwen met een immense platenverkoop en wervelende liveshows. Hier hoor je James Brown als de vocale bas in ‘Goin’ Goin’ Gone’ van The Jewels, opgenomen in 1956 voor het Imperial label. Nog bekend volk zorgt samen voor ‘Little Richard’s Boogie’. De naam van de pianovirtuoos zat reeds in de titel en de begeleidende band was die van Johnny Otis. En de legendarische performers volgen mekaar in sneltempo op. Voor de blues is dat John Lee Hooker, die je hier hoort in een voor hem aparte stijl. Zijn handelsmerk, de boogie is volop aanwezig, maar krijgt ook een Zuiders tintje in ‘She’s Mine’. Een naam die je ook vaak tegenkomt wanneer je grasduint in de Amerikaanse rootsmuziek, is deze van Piano Red. Hij zet een formidabele rock-‘n-roll neer in ‘Rock, Baby’. Rock-‘n-roll, maar dan met een in Spanje gezochte inspiratie komt er met ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Espanole’ van Mad Man Taylor. Nappy Brown werd een naam binnen de blues en rhythm & blues. Hier hoor je hem met ‘Land I Love’, een nummer dat hij reeds in 1958 opnam. Voor een swingende big band rhythm & blues kan je even later terecht bij Buddy Johnson en zijn orkest in ‘Rock On!’. Liefhebbers van degelijke popcorn zullen zeker smullen van ‘Chills And Fever’ van Ronnie Love en zijn orkest. Enorm leuk instrumentaal werk wacht op je met ‘Shake Walkin’’ van Mickey ‘Guitar’ Baker and his House Rockers. Over George ‘Mr. Blues’ Jackson is weinig geweten. Waar we wel zeker van zijn, is dat zijn ‘Uh-Huh’ een pareltje van een New Orleans rhythm & blues is. ‘My Baby’s Tops’ van The Gardenias kon rekenen op ondersteuning van de Kings Of Rhythm van Ike Turner, wat zorgt voor een prima omkadering. Van 1955 tot 1973 maakte Billy Guy deel uit van The Coasters. Dat hij het ook wel solo probeerde, laat ‘(She’s A) Humdinger’ dat hij in 1963 voor ABC-Paramount opnam, horen. Big Joe Turner is nog steeds één van mijn favoriete artiesten. Leuk is dan ook dat hij het rijtje mag sluiten met ‘I Love Ya, I Love Ya, I Love Ya’, dat traditiegetrouw vakkundig begeleid wordt. Hier zorgt daar het orkest van Pete Johnson voor.
Ook dit tweede volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie bevat weer tot de beste van het beste behorende rockende rhythm & blues en doo-wop. ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ is een serie die zeker een plaats verdient in de collectie van liefhebbers van deze genres.

You could recently read the review of 'Rock House' on this site, the first volume in the new series 'Hi-Strung R & B' released by the KokoMojo label. The series continues with 'Chop Chop' and once again we get 28 tracks that contain both rocking rhythm & blues and beautiful doo-wop. We immediately start with Ralph Wilson's 'What's Shakin'', a high-flyer within rocking rhythm & blues. Song that contains beautiful sax and guitar solos. Wilson is followed by Pearl Bailey with 'I Can't Rock 'N' Roll To Save My Soul'. We get our first taste of door-wop with The Fleetones in 'Your Lover Man'. The Chimes serve more in that genre in the title track and Jimmy Ricks with The Suburbans also operate in that genre during 'Bad Man Of Missouri'. The Treniers also serve up exciting harmony vocals, in the handclaps-embellished 'Go! Go! Go!. You will also find wonderful vocal performances in 'IFIC' by The Chantels. He would later build a formidable career with immense record sales and dazzling live shows. Here you hear James Brown on vocal bass in The Jewels' 'Goin' Goin' Gone', recorded in 1956 for the Imperial label. Other well-known people together provide 'Little Richard's Boogie'. The piano virtuoso's name was already in the title and the accompanying band was that of Johnny Otis. And the legendary performers follow each other in rapid succession. For the blues this is John Lee Hooker, who you hear here in a style that is unique to him. His trademark, the boogie, is fully present, but also gets a Southern touch in 'She's Mine'. A name that you often come across when you browse through American roots music is Piano Red. He delivers formidable rock 'n' roll in 'Rock, Baby'. Rock 'n' roll, but with inspiration sought in Spain, comes in 'Rock 'N' Roll Espanole' by Mad Man Taylor. Nappy Brown became a name in the blues and rhythm & blues. Here you can hear him with 'Land I Love', a song he recorded in 1958. For a swinging big band rhythm & blues you can later visit Buddy Johnson and his orchestra in 'Rock On!'. Lovers of decent popcorn will certainly enjoy 'Chills And Fever' by Ronnie Love and his orchestra. Very nice instrumental work awaits you with 'Shake Walkin'' by Mickey 'Guitar' Baker and his House Rockers. About George 'Mr. Blues' Jackson is little known. What we are certain of is that his 'Uh-Huh' is a gem of New Orleans rhythm & blues. 'My Baby's Tops' by The Gardenias could count on support from Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm, which provides an excellent setting. From 1955 to 1973, Billy Guy was part of The Coasters. The fact that he also tried it solo is evident in '(She's A) Humdinger', which he recorded for ABC-Paramount in 1963. Big Joe Turner is still one of my favorite artists. It is nice that he can close the list with 'I Love Ya, I Love Ya, I Love Ya', which is traditionally expertly accompanied. Pete Johnson's orchestra takes care of that here.
This second volume in the 'Hi-Strung R & B' series again contains some of the best of the best rocking rhythm & blues and doo-wop. 'Hi-Strung R & B' is a series that certainly deserves a place in the collection of fans of these genres.
