​Wie kan er weerstaan aan zo een heerlijke kop hete koffie? Of het nu het eerste is waar je de dag mee begint of ervan geniet tijdens een break, hangt van persoon tot persoon af. Maar dat de meeste mensen een kop koffie wel weten te smaken, is een feit. Dat geldt trouwens ook voor songschrijvers die in koffie en de bijhorende koffieshops een bron van inspiratie vonden. Na ‘Meet Me At The Hop’ en ‘Meet Me At The Candy Store’ komt het Duitse Bear Family Records nu op de proppen met ‘Meet Me At The Coffee Shop’. Dat vertaalt zich in 25 tussen 1940 en 1962 uitgebrachte songs met ‘koffie of koffieshop’ als onderwerp. De genres waarin deze nummers zich bewegen, gaan van rhythm & blues, rock-‘n-roll, country, pop en zelfs jazz. De vertolkers, bekende en minder bekende, komen zowel uit Amerika als Engeland, Italië en Peru. Laten we meteen maar met het oudste nummer beginnen. Dat komt van The Ink Spots en heeft als titel ‘Java Jive’ en werd in 1940 opgenomen. Het nummer heeft een fijn soft jazz gevoel, waarmee de zachte mooie stemmen van The Ink Spots schitterend matchen. Jazzy klinkt ook ‘Coffee Bar Calypso’ van de Britse Maxine Daniels, alsook ‘Black Coffee’ van Peggy Lee. Smooth en jazzy zijn ook de ingrediënten van Claire Hogans ‘You’re The Cream In My Coffee’.
Maar er is meer. Zo bevat het album ook prima countryblues. Daarvoor zorgt Billy Briggs met ‘Coffee Sippin’ Blues’. Nog meer richting country gaan we met het instrumentale ‘Caffeine Patrol’ door Speedy West en Jimmy Bryant. In hetzelfde genre situeert zich ook het grotendeels gesproken ‘A Cup Of Coffee And A Cigarette’ van Jerry Irby & His Texas Raunchers. Countryartiest Merle Travis is geen onbekende. Hier is hij aanwezig met ‘I Can’t Afford The Coffee’ dat ook blues in zich heeft.
Voor een dosis rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly kunnen we terecht bij Bill Haley en ‘Forty Cups Of Coffee’ en Glen Glenn met ‘One Cup Of Coffee And A Cigarette’. Later krijg je trouwens hetzelfde ‘Forty Cups Of Coffee’ nog in een meer rhythm & bluesversie door Les Brown & His Band Of Renown met Jo-Anne Greer aan de microfoon.
Rock-‘n-roll is zeker ook te vinden in ‘Coffee Break’ van The Rock ‘n’ Rollers, het instrumentale ‘Coffee Bar Jive’ van Joe ‘Mr. Piano’ Henderson en in ‘Coffee Baby’ van Buddy Phillips en The Rockin’ Ramblers. Nog meer rocken kan je  op de tonen van ‘Koffee Shop Rock’ van Micky Michaels and The Forrestals.
Zeker een knappe instrumental is het eerder bluesy door piano gestuurde ‘Cafe Roman Candle’ van Googie René en zijn orkest. Instrumentaal is ook het exotisch aanvoelend ‘Moliendo Cafe’ van de uit Peru afkomstige Hugo Blanco Y Su Conjunto. Het orkest van het bekende duo songschrijvers Leiber en Stoller tref je aan op het eveneens instrumentale ‘Cafe Espresso’.
Richting pop gaan de Britse The King Brothers met het bekende ‘The Coffee Song (They’ve Got An Awful Lot Of Coffee In Brazil)’.
In het Italiaans sluit dit album met ‘Moliendo Cafe’ van Mina e L’Orchestra De Vita, nummer dat je eerder in een instrumentale versie van Hugo Blanco Y Su Conjunto kreeg.
‘Meet Me At The Coffee Shop’ is een formidabel thematisch album geworden. En nu……..is er tijd voor een heerlijke koffiebreak!

Who can resist a delicious cup of hot coffee? Whether it is the first thing you start the day with or enjoy it during a break depends on the person. But it is a fact that most people enjoy a cup of coffee. This also applies to songwriters who found coffee and the associated coffee shops a source of inspiration. After 'Meet Me At The Hop' and 'Meet Me At The Candy Store', the German Bear Family Records now comes up with 'Meet Me At The Coffee Shop'. This translates into 25 songs released between 1940 and 1962 with 'coffee or coffee shop' as the subject. The genres in which these songs move range from rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, country, pop and even jazz. The performers, well-known and less well-known, come from America, England, Italy and Peru. Let's start right away with the oldest song. That comes from The Ink Spots and is entitled 'Java Jive' and was recorded in 1940. The song has a nice soft jazz feel, with which the soft, beautiful voices of The Ink Spots match beautifully. Jazzy also sounds like 'Coffee Bar Calypso' by the British Maxine Daniels, as well as 'Black Coffee' by Peggy Lee. Smooth and jazzy are also the ingredients of Claire Hogan's 'You're The Cream In My Coffee'.
But there's more. The album also contains excellent country blues. Billy Briggs takes care of that with 'Coffee Sippin' Blues'. We move more towards country with the instrumental 'Caffeine Patrol' by Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant. The largely spoken 'A Cup Of Coffee And A Cigarette' by Jerry Irby & His Texas Raunchers is also situated in the same genre. Country artist Merle Travis is no stranger. Here he is present with 'I Can't Afford The Coffee', which also has blues in it.
For a dose of rock 'n' roll and rockabilly we can go to Bill Haley and 'Forty Cups Of Coffee' and Glen Glenn with 'One Cup Of Coffee And A Cigarette'. Later you get the same 'Forty Cups Of Coffee' in a more rhythm & blues version by Les Brown & His Band Of Renown with Jo-Anne Greer at the microphone.
Rock 'n' roll can certainly also be found in 'Coffee Break' by The Rock 'n' Rollers, the instrumental 'Coffee Bar Jive' by Joe 'Mr. Piano' Henderson and in 'Coffee Baby' by Buddy Phillips and The Rockin' Ramblers. You can rock even more to the sounds of 'Koffee Shop Rock' by Micky Michaels and The Forrestals.
The rather bluesy piano-driven 'Cafe Roman Candle' by Googie René and his orchestra is certainly a beautiful instrumental. The exotic feeling 'Moliendo Cafe' by Hugo Blanco Y Su Conjunto from Peru is also instrumental. You will find the orchestra of the well-known duo of songwriters Leiber and Stoller on the equally instrumental 'Cafe Espresso'.
The British The King Brothers move towards pop with the well-known 'The Coffee Song (They've Got An Awful Lot Of Coffee In Brazil)'.
In Italian, this album closes with 'Moliendo Cafe' by Mina e L'Orchestra De Vita, a song that was previously included in an instrumental version by Hugo Blanco Y Su Conjunto.
