​En ook voor ons zesde bezoek in de ‘Rockin’ Rollin’ USA’ serie is Canada nog steeds ‘the place to be’. In de vijftiger en zestiger jaren van de vorige eeuw had het land muzikaal één en ander te bieden. Naast de platen die er uit de USA werden geïmporteerd, gebeurden er ook opnames die het etiket ‘rock-‘n-roll’ zeker verdienen. Het album start met ‘Boom Boom Baby’ een geïmporteerde song van Crash Craddock. Alhoewel hij Amerikaan van origine was, genoot hij zijn eerste groot succes in Australië. Een nummer dat de rock-‘n-roll herleidt tot het meest essentiële is zeker ‘Hangout’ van Lloyd Arnold an his Rockin’ Drifters. Rechttoe rechtaan rock-‘n-roll op zijn best! Dat geldt trouwens ook voor de volgende track, ‘Bonnie Jean’ van Andy Dio.
Naast de minder bekende artiesten, sieren ook een aantal grote namen deze compilatie. De eerste die we tegenkomen, is Buddy Holly. Samen met zijn Crickets zet hij in onvervalste Hollystijl ‘Tell Me Now’ neer. En ook ‘the man in black’ tekent present. Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two namen ‘There You Go’ in 1957 op voor het Sun label van Sam Phillips. Ook van het Sun label komt het hier opgenomen ‘Go! Go! Go!’ van Roy Orbison and Teen Kings. Lonnie Mack zou later carrière maken als bluesartiest. Hier hoor je hem in ‘Baby What’s Wrong’, een nummer uit 1963 en een compositie van Jimmy Reed. En let vooral op Macks hemels gitaarwerk. Dat rock-‘n-roll niet vies hoeft te zijn van wat gejodel, hoor je in ‘Cool Papa’ van Alan Freed en zijn orkest.
Een veelvuldige gecoverde klassieker is ‘Louie Louie’. Origineel van Richard Berry, maar hier krijg je de niet onaardige versie van Rockin’ Robin Roberts. Een andere klassieker is ‘Lover Please’. Het werd geschreven door Billy Swan en voor het eerst opgenomen door The Rhythm Steppers in 1960. Bekend werd de song dan weer door Clyde McPhatter. Hier prijkt de versie van Dennis Turner. Voor de titeltrack ‘Rough And Bold’ gaan we naar Andy Dio. Nummer dat duidelijk nog de kiemen in zich heeft van sublieme rhythm & blues. Voor wat countryinvloeden zorgt de Canadese gitarist, zanger en songschrijver Jack Bailey in ‘The Bad Apple’. Onversneden Canadese rock-‘n-roll serveren Gary Cooper en The Triads in ‘Come On Pretty Baby’.
Wie kunnen het best zorgen voor schitterende samenzang? Natuurlijk de damesgroep The Bobbettes. Geen ‘I Shot Mr. Lee’, maar wel het nog meer rockende ‘Have Mercy Baby’. Mooie samenzang die in Canada werd opgenomen, hoor je in ‘My Blue Heaven’ van The Crew Cuts. Ook in Canada opgenomen, werd ‘Friday Night, Go Go’ van The Hi-Lites. Meer knap vocaal werk komt er met Bonie Lou with Chorus in ‘Bo Weevil’. Nummer dat geschreven werd door Dave Bartholomew en Fats Domino en ook door deze laatste opgenomen werd. Samen vocaal op topniveau presteren doen ook Carl en Jay Perkins in ‘Lend Me Your Comb’.
Het album sluiten is voorbehouden aan Billy Mason met een cover van Bobby Vee’s hit ‘Night Has A Thousand Eyes’, hier door Mason in zijn moedertaal gebracht als ‘Car Mon Coeur’.
De formidabele rock-‘n-roll op dit album komt van labels als Apex, Barry, Rodeo, Record-O-Rama en Zirkon. Bovendien gaf The Pan American Recordings toestemming om een aantal minder bekende en misschien zelfs compleet onbekende tracks op dit album te plaatsen. Genieten is dus kortom weer de boodschap!

​And for our sixth visit in the 'Rockin' Rollin' USA' series, Canada is still 'the place to be'. In the fifties and sixties of the last century, the country had a lot to offer musically. In addition to the records that were imported from the USA, there were also own recordings that certainly deserve the label 'rock 'n' roll'. The album starts with 'Boom Boom Baby', an imported song from Crash Craddock. Although American by birth, he enjoyed his first major success in Australia. A song that reduces rock 'n' roll to its most essential is certainly 'Hangout' by Lloyd Arnold and his Rockin' Drifters. Straight-forward rock 'n' roll at its best! This also applies to the next track, 'Bonnie Jean' by Andy Dio.
In addition to the lesser-known artists, a number of big names also grace this compilation. The first one we meet is Buddy Holly. A frequently covered classic is 'Louie Louie'. Original by Richard Berry, but here you get the not bad version by Rockin' Robin Roberts. Another classic is 'Lover Please'. It was written by Billy Swan and first recorded by The Rhythm Steppers in 1960. The song was made famous by Clyde McPhatter. Dennis Turner's version appears here. For the title track 'Rough And Bold' we go to Andy Dio. Song that clearly still contains the seeds of sublime rhythm & blues. Canadian guitarist, singer and songwriter Jack Bailey provides some country influences in 'The Bad Apple'. Gary Cooper and The Triads serve up unadulterated Canadian rock 'n' roll in 'Come On Pretty Baby'.
Who can best provide beautiful harmony singing? Of course the women's group The Bobbettes. No 'I Shot Mr. Lee', but the even more rocking 'Have Mercy Baby'. You can hear beautiful harmony vocals that were recorded in Canada in 'My Blue Heaven' by The Crew Cuts. Also recorded in Canada was The Hi-Lites' 'Friday Night, Go Go'. More fine vocal work comes with Bonie Lou with Chorus in 'Bo Weevil'. Song written by Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino and also recorded by the latter. Carl and Jay Perkins also perform together at top vocal levels in 'Lend Me Your Comb'.
Closing the album is reserved for Billy Mason with a cover of Bobby Vee's hit 'Night Has A Thousand Eyes', here delivered by Mason in his native language as 'Car Mon Coeur'.
The formidable rock 'n' roll on this album comes from labels such as Apex, Barry, Rodeo, Record-O-Rama and Zirkon. In addition, The Pan American Recordings gave permission to include a number of lesser known and perhaps even completely unknown tracks on this album. In short, enjoyment is the message again!

​En ook met ons zevende bezoek in deze serie vertoeven we nog steeds in Canada. Ook nu weer krijgen we 28 songs die in de fifties en begin van de zestiger jaren in het land succesvol waren. De labels die we hier voorgeschoteld krijgen, zijn Aragon, Banff, Chateau, Delta, Rock-A-Tune, Zirkon en The Pan American Recordings. Het album start en zal tevens eindigen met Bunker Hill. De eerste track is ‘Hide And Go Seek (pt.1) en afsluiten doen we met het tweede deel van het nummer. Bunker Hill was een gospelzanger en nam deze single op met Link Wray and The Raymen. Hill legt zijn gospelervaring in het nummer, terwijl Link en zijn kompanen voor een uitermate strak ritme zorgen. Een song boordevol ambiance! Meer dan formidabele blues presenteert Slim Harpo in ‘Don’t Start Cryin’ Now’. Harpo wordt gevolgd door The Count Victors featuring Danny Harrison. Samen coveren ze schitterend de Bo Diddley song ‘Road Runner’. Een fraai staaltje van rockende rhythm & blues leveren The Cosmos met Andy Wilson aan de microfoon in ‘My Love, My Love’. Berry Gordy was co-writer van Jackie Wilsons ‘Reet Petite’ en ook aan ‘What’s Gwyne On’ van Tony Spade schreef hij mee en dat hoor je ook. ‘Canadian made rock ‘n’ roll’ krijg je via ‘Get A Move On’ van The Prowlers. Zij openden in 1956 het Canadese optreden van Bill Haley and The Comets. En ook Barry and The Deans kwamen uit Canada. Zij rocken gesofisticeerd op ‘Rock With My Baby’. Meer Canadese rock-‘n-roll komt er nog met ‘Lindy Lou’ van Kenny and The Be-Bops. ‘White Cliffs Of Dover’ werd door Vera Lynn onsterfelijk gemaakt. The Robins maakten er een opzwepende doo-wop versie van. Schitterend gedaan trouwens! Een leuk nummer dat richting pop drijft is ‘Love Me To Pieces’ van Jill Corey. Jill werd ontdekt toen ze 17 was en 5 jaren later nam ze deze song op. Heerlijk door gitaar gestuurd instrumentaal werk brengen Evan Kemp’s Trail Riders met ‘Midnight Rider’, inclusief een mooie prestatie op de steelgitaar. Liefhebbers van degelijke countryrock worden op hun wenken bediend door Ted Self. Zijn ‘(Little Angel) Come Rock Me To Sleep’ verscheen maar liefst op 3 verschillende labels. Rudy Rivers was een ‘World War II Royal Canadian Air Force’ veteraan. Hij zou in 56 jaren maar liefst 490 songs geschreven hebben. Als die allemaal het niveau hebben van het countryachtige ‘Let The Train Whistle Say My Goodbye’, dan kan je daar alleen maar respect voor hebben. Country is ook de grondtoon voor Ted Daigle’s ‘Ballad Of A Teenage Queen’. Een erg toffe song is tevens ‘Watch Your Step’ van zanger en gitarist Bobby Parker. Nummer dat een mooie mix van rhythm & blues en soul in zich heeft. Buster Brown was een Amerikaanse zanger en mondharmonicaspeler. Dat hij zowel vocaal als op de Mississippi saxofoon enorm getalenteerd was, laat hij horen op ‘Don’t Dog Your Woman’.
Zoals je ziet, valt er ook op volume 7 in de ‘Rockin’ Rollin’ USA’ serie sublieme rock-‘n-roll en rhythm & blues te ontdekken. ‘Rockin’ Rollin’ USA’ is andermaal een serie die het aanschaffen meer dan waard is en zeg niet dat je er niet van wist.

And with our seventh visit in this series we are still in Canada. Once again we get 28 songs that were successful in the country in the fifties and early sixties. The labels we are presented with here are Aragon, Banff, Chateau, Delta, Rock-A-Tune, Zirkon and The Pan American Recordings. The album starts and will also end with Bunker Hill. The first track is 'Hide And Go Seek (pt.1) and we close with the second part of the song. Bunker Hill was a gospel singer and recorded this single with Link Wray and The Raymen. Hill puts his gospel experience into the song, while Link and his companions provide an extremely tight rhythm. A song full of ambiance! Slim Harpo presents more than formidable blues in 'Don't Start Cryin' Now'. Harpo is followed by The Count Victors featuring Danny Harrison. Together they beautifully cover the Bo Diddley song 'Road Runner'. The Cosmos deliver a fine example of rocking rhythm & blues with Andy Wilson at the microphone in 'My Love, My Love'. Berry Gordy was co-writer of Jackie Wilson's 'Reet Petite' and he also co-wrote Tony Spade's 'What's Gwyne On' and you can hear that too. You get 'Canadian made rock 'n' roll' through 'Get A Move On' by The Prowlers. They opened the 1956 Canadian performance of Bill Haley and The Comets. And Barry and The Deans also came from Canada. They rock sophisticatedly on 'Rock With My Baby'. More Canadian rock 'n' roll is coming with 'Lindy Lou' by Kenny and The Be-Bops. 'White Cliffs Of Dover' was immortalized by Vera Lynn. The Robins made an exciting doo-wop version of it. Beautifully done by the way! A nice song that drifts towards pop is 'Love Me To Pieces' by Jill Corey. Jill was discovered when she was 17 and 5 years later she recorded this song. Evan Kemp's Trail Riders deliver wonderful guitar-driven instrumental work with 'Midnight Rider', including a beautiful performance on the steel guitar. Fans of solid country rock are at their beck and call by Ted Self. His '(Little Angel) Come Rock Me To Sleep' was released on no fewer than 3 different labels. Rudy Rivers was a World War II Royal Canadian Air Force veteran. He is said to have written no fewer than 490 songs in 56 years. If they all have the level of the country-like 'Let The Train Whistle Say My Goodbye', then you can only respect that. Country is also the keynote for Ted Daigle's 'Ballad Of A Teenage Queen'. A very cool song sure is 'Watch Your Step' by singer and guitarist Bobby Parker. Song that has a nice mix of rhythm & blues and soul. Buster Brown was an American singer and harmonica player. He shows that he was extremely talented both vocally and on the Mississippi saxophone on 'Don't Dog Your Woman'.
As you can see, there is once again sublime rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues to be discovered on volume 7 in the 'Rockin' Rollin' USA' series. 'Rockin' Rollin' USA' is once again a series that is more than worth purchasing and don't say you didn't know about it.
