​Het is algemeen geweten dat de Amerikaanse rootsgenres elkaar inspireerden. Zo hadden nieuwe genres als rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly de rhythm & blues en country als basis. Zochten de blanke artiesten hun inspiratie in deze genres, wel het gebeurde ook in de andere richting wanneer de zwarte artiesten zich op de country stortten. Hiervan krijgen we op ‘Shotgun Boogie, Rhythm & Blues Goes Country’ 29 songs te horen. We steken meteen van wal met Wynonie Harris die een knappe rhythm & bluesversie neerzet van Louis Innis’ ‘Good Morning Judge’. Later doet hij dat ook met ‘Bloodshot Eyes’. Voor de titeltrack ‘Shotgun Boogie’ ging Eddie Mack, begeleid door het orkest van Cootie Williams te rade bij Tennessee Ernie Ford. Ook Mack komt nog een tweede keer aan bod met het van Merle Travis gekende ‘Divorce Me C.O.D. Blues’. Hank Williams werd niet alleen vaak gecoverd binnen de rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly, maar de rhythm & bluesartiesten gaven zijn repertoire een wel heel originele twist. Hiervan kan je jezelf overtuigen bij Fat Man Robinson en Sonny Knight, respectievelijk in ‘My Bucket’s Got A Hole In It’ en ‘Lovesick Blues’. Meer Hank Williams komt er met The Griffin Brothers, feat. Margie Day in ‘Move It On Over’. Ook vocale groepen grepen met veel liefde terug naar het countryrepertoire. Een mooie presentatie leverden The Crows met de Bill Carlisle compositie ‘No Help Wanted’ en let ook op de door boogiewoogie geïnspireerde pianopartij van Viola Watkins. Datzelfde nummer krijg je later nog in een stevige rhythm & bluesversie van Bob Gaddy and His Alley Cats. Cole Porters ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ kreeg in de handen van Tommy Edwards een goed zittend croonerpakje aangemeten. Zo een typische countrysong is ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’. Dat verandert wanneer ‘Scat Man’ Crothers er een jazzy bluesy twist aan geeft. Country met een New Orleans rhythm & bluesfeel presenteert Smiley Lewis in Link Davis’ ‘Big Mamou’. Een andere veelvuldige gecoverde song is Merle Travis ‘ ‘Sixteen Tons’, nummer dat onsterfelijk werd gemaakt door Tennessee Ernie Ford. The Platters geven het nummer de diepgang die het verdient. ‘Sixteen Tons’ beluister je later ook in de bluesversie van B.B. King. ‘Cherokee Boogie (Eh-Oh-Aleena) krijg je in twee versies. Een eerste is de swingende van Joey Thomas en een tweede maal door Moose Jackson.  Via Elvis kreeg ‘Crying In The Chapel’ een enorme bekendheid. The Orioles bewaarden de gospelfeel en vulden die aan met heerlijke doo-wop. Johnnie Lee Wills gaf ‘Rag Mop’ dat typisch countrygevoel mee. Joe Liggins samen met zijn Honeydrippers transformeerden de song in een aanstekelijke rhythm & blues. Duizelingwekkend gitaarwerk wacht op je in het instrumentale ‘Steel Guitar Rag’ van Earl Hooker, waarin de country nog duidelijk hoorbaar is. Country is ook nog te horen in ‘Pick Me Up On Your Way Down’ van Guitar Jr. Een andere schitterende instrumental, maar dan nu op sax, presenteert Hal Singer met ‘Indian Love Call’. Bekend is zeker ‘Pistol Pickin’ Mama’, hier in de knappe doo-wop rhythm & bluesversie van The Hurricanes.
Afsluiten is voorbehouden aan het eerder door Eddie Mack en Cootie Williams gebrachte ‘Shot Gun Boogie’, dat je nu in de versie van Cecil Gant krijgt.
De wisselwerking tussen country en rhythm & blues leverde heel wat prachtige versies op van bekende en minder bekende countrynummers. Op dit eerste volume in de ‘Rhythm & Blues Goes Country’ krijg je alvast 28 pareltjes te horen.

It is common knowledge that the American roots genres inspired each other. For example, new genres such as rock 'n' roll and rockabilly were based on rhythm & blues and country. While white artists sought inspiration in these genres, it also happened in the other direction when black artists turned to country. We get to hear 29 songs of this on 'Shotgun Boogie, Rhythm & Blues Goes Country'. We start straight away with Wynonie Harris who delivers a beautiful rhythm & blues version of Louis Innis' 'Good Morning Judge'. Later he does the same with 'Bloodshot Eyes'. For the title track 'Shotgun Boogie', Eddie Mack, accompanied by the Cootie Williams orchestra, consulted Tennessee Ernie Ford. Mack is also featured a second time with Merle Travis's 'Divorce Me C.O.D.' Blues'. Hank Williams was not only often covered in rock 'n' roll and rockabilly, but the rhythm & blues artists gave his repertoire a very original twist. You can convince yourself of this with Fat Man Robinson and Sonny Knight, in 'My Bucket's Got A Hole In It' and 'Lovesick Blues' respectively. More Hank Williams to come with The Griffin Brothers, feat. Margie Day in 'Move It On Over'. Vocal groups also returned to the country repertoire with great fondness. The Crows delivered a beautiful presentation with the Bill Carlisle composition 'No Help Wanted' and also note the boogie-woogie-inspired piano part by Viola Watkins. You will later get that same song in a solid rhythm & blues version by Bob Gaddy and His Alley Cats. Cole Porter's 'Don't Fence Me In' was given a well-fitting crooner suit in the hands of Tommy Edwards. Such a typical country song is 'Ghost Riders In The Sky'. That changes when 'Scat Man' Crothers gives it a jazzy bluesy twist. Country with a New Orleans rhythm & blues feel presents Smiley Lewis in Link Davis' 'Big Mamou'. Another frequently covered song is Merle Travis' ‘Sixteen Tons’, a song immortalized by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The Platters give the song the depth it deserves. You can also listen to 'Sixteen Tons' later in the blues version of B.B. King. 'Cherokee Boogie (Eh-Oh-Aleena) comes in two versions. The first is the swinging one by Joey Thomas and the second by Moose Jackson. 'Crying In The Chapel' gained enormous fame through Elvis. The Orioles kept the gospel feel and supplemented it with delicious doo-wop. Johnnie Lee Wills gave 'Rag Mop' that typical country feeling. Joe Liggins together with his Honeydrippers transformed the song into a catchy rhythm & blues. Dazzling guitar work awaits you in the instrumental 'Steel Guitar Rag' by Earl Hooker, in which the country is still clearly audible. Country can also be heard in 'Pick Me Up On Your Way Down' by Guitar Jr. Hal Singer presents another beautiful instrumental, but now on sax, with 'Indian Love Call'. 'Pistol Pickin' Mama' is certainly well-known, here in the beautiful doo-wop rhythm & blues version by The Hurricanes.
