​Onlangs kreeg je hier de review van volume 43 in de ‘That’ll Flat…Git It! serie, en nu ligt volume 45 in ons afspeelapparaat. Ik hoor je al vragen……en waar blijft volume 44. Wel, dat volume verscheen reeds in augustus 2023 en de review ervan kan je hier nog eens herlezen. Goed, maar nu terug naar volume 45 dat aandacht schenkt aan de uitgaves van Imperial Records. Het label had country, rockabilly en New Orleans rhythm & blues in zijn catalogus zitten. Een catalogus die verder ook aangevuld werd met subgenres. Het label bracht heel wat bekende artiesten voort. Denk maar aan Ricky Nelson, The Burnette Brothers, Merle Kilgore, Lew Williams, Laura Lee Perkins, Dennis Herrold, Jackie Walker en Bob Luman. Andere namen die later nog in de spots zouden komen te staan zijn de toen nog jonge Freddy Fender en de later als bluesshouter naam makende Roy Brown. Deze ronkende namen krijgen het gezelschap van minder bekende en obscure artiesten. Afgetrapt wordt er door Tommy Lomonte. Samen met de bekende Dave Bartholomew schreef hij de super rocker ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’. Tommy wordt gevolgd door Ricky Nelson met ‘Shirley Lee’. Nelson keert nog tweemaal terug met ‘One Of These Mornings’ en ‘Milk Cow Blues’. Een andere grootheid binnen het genre was Bob Luman. Hij is vier keren van de partij, inclusief het vaak gecoverde ‘Red Cadillac And A Black Moustache’ dat Bob als eerste artiest opnam. In ‘Blue Days, Black Nights’ laat hij iets meer zijn countrykantje horen. Ook Merle Kilgore was één van de paradepaardjes van het Imperial label. Hij is op deze compilatie opgenomen met drie songs. Intrigerend is het ietwat trage ‘Start All Over Again’.  Naast uitvoerend artiest, heeft Kilgore ook heel wat hits geschreven, zoals o.a. ‘Ring Of Fire’ van Johnny Cash, met June Carter als co-writer. Een sterke hillbilly ondertoon typeert Gene Henslee’s ‘Rockin’ Baby’ en ‘Diggin’ ‘n’ Datin’’. Met een wel heel rauwe stem werkt Laura Lee Perkins zich dan weer door ‘Kiss Me Baby’. Opmerkelijk is zeker ‘So Shy’ van The Leen Teens. Nummer dat drijft op een leuk clean gitaargeluid. In een echo gedrenkte stem en rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly gaan meer dan eens perfect samen. Een knap voorbeeld hiervan is ‘Get Off My Back’ van Jay Blue. Een hoogtepunt is zeker het van een toffe piano voorziene ‘Long Time No Love’ van Ronnie Smith. Nummer dat geschreven werd door Roy Orbison. Een relaxte bluessfeer etaleert Roy Brown in ‘Slow Down Little Eva’. Dorsey en Johnny Burnette componeerden dan weer ‘Yes, I’m Gonna Love You’, dat je hier krijgt in de versie van Sonny Anderson. Voor een formidabele instrumentale gitaarrocker kan je terecht bij The Sidewinders en hun ‘Sidewinder’. Lang vooraleer hij in de zeventiger jaren als countryartiest naam maakte, was Freddy Fender als rocker actief. Daarvan kan je getuige zijn tijdens het slow rockende ‘Mean Woman’.
Op deze compilatie wordt andermaal duidelijk dat Imperial heel wat bekende artiesten onder haar vleugels nam. Tevens werd er enorm aandacht besteed aan de opnames. Steengoede composities, knappe arrangementen en prachtige vocale prestaties maakten het plaatje compleet. Allemaal zaken die je van een bekend platenlabel mocht verwachten.

You recently could read the review of volume 43 in the 'That'll Flat...Git It! series, and now volume 45 is in our playback device. I already hear you asking... and where is volume 44? Well, that volume was already released in August 2023 and you can reread its review here. Okay, but now back to volume 45 which focuses on Imperial Records releases. The label had country, rockabilly and New Orleans rhythm & blues in its catalog. A catalog that was also supplemented with subgenres. The label produced many well-known artists. Just think of Ricky Nelson, The Burnette Brothers, Merle Kilgore, Lew Williams, Laura Lee Perkins, Dennis Herrold, Jackie Walker and Bob Luman. Other names that would later come into the spotlight are the then young Freddy Fender and Roy Brown, who later made a name for himself as a blues shouter. These buzzing names are joined by lesser-known and obscure artists. Tommy Lomonte kicks off. Together with the famous Dave Bartholomew he wrote the super rocker 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah'. Tommy is followed by Ricky Nelson with 'Shirley Lee'. Nelson returns twice more with 'One Of These Mornings' and 'Milk Cow Blues'. Another great one within the genre was Bob Luman. He appears four times, including the often covered 'Red Cadillac And A Black Moustache', which Bob was the first artist to record. In 'Blue Days, Black Nights' he shows his country side a luttele more. Merle Kilgore was also one of the showpieces of the Imperial label. He is included on this compilation with three songs. The somewhat slow 'Start All Over Again' is intriguing. In addition to being a performing artist, Kilgore has also written many hits, such as 'Ring Of Fire' by Johnny Cash, with June Carter as co-writer. A strong hillbilly undertone characterizes Gene Henslee's 'Rockin' Baby' and 'Diggin' 'n' Datin''. With a very raw voice, Laura Lee Perkins works her way through 'Kiss Me Baby'. Remarkable is certainly 'So Shy' by The Leen Teens. Song that floats on a nice clean guitar sound. Voice drenched in echo and rock 'n' roll and rockabilly go together perfectly more than once. A good example of this is 'Get Off My Back' by Jay Blue. A highlight is certainly Ronnie Smith's 'Long Time No Love', which features a cool piano. Song written by Roy Orbison. Roy Brown showcases a relaxed blues atmosphere in 'Slow Down Little Eva'. Dorsey and Johnny Burnette composed 'Yes, I'm Gonna Love You', which you get here in Sonny Anderson's version. For a formidable instrumental guitar rocker you can go to The Sidewinders and their 'Sidewinder'. Long before he made a name for himself as a country artist in the seventies, Freddy Fender was active as a rocker. You can witness this during the slow rocking 'Mean Woman'.
This compilation once again makes it clear that Imperial took many well-known artists under its wing. A lot of attention was also paid to the recordings. Excellent compositions, clever arrangements and beautiful vocal performances completed the picture. All things you would expect from a well-known record label.
