The It’s a sound that combines classic soul melodies and funky R&B grooves with raw blues power. Sugaray Rayford is pleased to announce the June 14th release of Human Decency via Forty Below Records. The title track is a simple reminder that our similarities are more substantial than our differences, and in the end, there is no black or white or left or right; there are only hearts and minds.

Bring in the Light, is a collection of songs that I hope you will enjoy listening to and feel moved by. I’m compelled to sing these songs during a time of so much painful conflict and division in what appears at times like a very broken world. It can feel impossible to find the courage to face the problems, injustice and suffering in society, the darkness and madness of it all can be overwhelming. I think working as a musician and a music therapist can certainly enhance these feelings however, I’m always grateful for and uplifted by the many special moments when music – creating it, singing it, dancing and listening to it, and making it with others provides a source of light and brings joy to life.

Things are going well with the 'Black Pearls' series, of which the eighth volume entitled 'Down In The Basement' has already been released. Compiler Ronni Boysen once again collected 28 tracks that cover all corners of American roots music. Bunker Hill can start off with 'You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby'. Bunker started his musical career with the gospel group The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and you can hear it in his powerful voice. Here he plays an energetic rhythm & blues with minimal accompaniment. With The Contours and 'Whole Lotta Woman', a composition by Motown boss Benny Gordy, we get a great combination of rhythm & blues and doo-wop. Rhythm & blues is previously linked to soul by Cookie Jackson. Together with The Zeke Strong Band she performs a beautiful 'Do You Still Love Me'. Rhythm & blues and soul are also included in 'Your Letter' by Willie Wright & His Sparklers. Even more soul contains 'I Won't Be Your Fool' by Little Joe Hinton. Someone who has had several songs covered is Arthur Alexander. Here you can hear his debut 'The Girl That Radiates That Charm' and he is labeled as June (for Junior) Alexander. Johnny Torrence was the founder of the vocal group The Jewels. He also receives backing vocals support on 'Your Lover Man'. Raw and lived-in rhythm & blues is Gino Parks' trademark. Listen and convince yourself during 'Same Thing'. The Metallics also show more beautiful harmony vocals in 'Get Lost' and The Originals in 'Little Lonely Girl'. This certainly also applies to the well-known The “5” Royales in 'They Don't Know' and to The Clovers in 'One More Time'. The title track of this album comes from King Coleman and pay particular attention to the beautiful backing vocals that give the song a very special twist. Who will blow your socks off with steamy rhythm & blues is Helen Troy with 'I Think I Love You'. Also pay attention to the impressive horn section. 'I'm Going Home' by Prince Conley sounds very special, with the horns providing a somewhat ska atmosphere. A rare recording is 'Playboy' by Billy Ray. He recorded it in 1961 for the Kent label. Fortunately it is on this compilation because it is a more than fantastic song. Little is also known about the vocal women's group The Vonns. The fact is that with 'So Many Days', their only recording by the way, they had a hell of a danceable song. For blues fans, the name of singer and harmonica player George Harmonica Smith will certainly ring a bell. Smith also worked with Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton. Here he can be heard under the name George Allen with 'Come On Home', a beautiful rhythm & blues song, where he solos cleverly on the blues harp. Another blues great is bassist and composer Willie Dixon. Here he backs with his band Billy Emerson in 'I'll Get You', a composition by beauty gentlemen, in which Dixon's influence is clearly audible. Closing is reserved for Jimmy Lewis, who delivers an excellent Northern Soul song here with 'Feelin in Mah Bones'. Lewis' songs were covered by Bobby Bland, Little Richard, Solomon Burke and Bobby Womack, among others.
Just like the previous volumes in this series, volume 8 is another hit. Still 2 volumes to go, of which volume 9 'Let's Have Some Fun' will be released next month. Looking forward to it!

It took a while before John Clifton returned to the studio, during his Polish tour he recorded ten original pieces ranging from rhythm and blues to wonderfully drawn-out shuffle work. Time to bring this man to our summer festivals!

You could recently read the review of 'Rock House' on this site, the first volume in the new series 'Hi-Strung R & B' released by the KokoMojo label. The series continues with 'Chop Chop' and once again we get 28 tracks that contain both rocking rhythm & blues and beautiful doo-wop. We immediately start with Ralph Wilson's 'What's Shakin'', a high-flyer within rocking rhythm & blues. Song that contains beautiful sax and guitar solos. Wilson is followed by Pearl Bailey with 'I Can't Rock 'N' Roll To Save My Soul'. We get our first taste of door-wop with The Fleetones in 'Your Lover Man'. The Chimes serve more in that genre in the title track and Jimmy Ricks with The Suburbans also operate in that genre during 'Bad Man Of Missouri'. The Treniers also serve up exciting harmony vocals, in the handclaps-embellished 'Go! Go! Go!. You will also find wonderful vocal performances in 'IFIC' by The Chantels. He would later build a formidable career with immense record sales and dazzling live shows. Here you hear James Brown on vocal bass in The Jewels' 'Goin' Goin' Gone', recorded in 1956 for the Imperial label. Other well-known people together provide 'Little Richard's Boogie'. The piano virtuoso's name was already in the title and the accompanying band was that of Johnny Otis. And the legendary performers follow each other in rapid succession. For the blues this is John Lee Hooker, who you hear here in a style that is unique to him. His trademark, the boogie, is fully present, but also gets a Southern touch in 'She's Mine'. A name that you often come across when you browse through American roots music is Piano Red. He delivers formidable rock 'n' roll in 'Rock, Baby'. Rock 'n' roll, but with inspiration sought in Spain, comes in 'Rock 'N' Roll Espanole' by Mad Man Taylor. Nappy Brown became a name in the blues and rhythm & blues. Here you can hear him with 'Land I Love', a song he recorded in 1958. For a swinging big band rhythm & blues you can later visit Buddy Johnson and his orchestra in 'Rock On!'. Lovers of decent popcorn will certainly enjoy 'Chills And Fever' by Ronnie Love and his orchestra. Very nice instrumental work awaits you with 'Shake Walkin'' by Mickey 'Guitar' Baker and his House Rockers. About George 'Mr. Blues' Jackson is little known. What we are certain of is that his 'Uh-Huh' is a gem of New Orleans rhythm & blues. 'My Baby's Tops' by The Gardenias could count on support from Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm, which provides an excellent setting. From 1955 to 1973, Billy Guy was part of The Coasters. The fact that he also tried it solo is evident in '(She's A) Humdinger', which he recorded for ABC-Paramount in 1963. Big Joe Turner is still one of my favorite artists. It is nice that he can close the list with 'I Love Ya, I Love Ya, I Love Ya', which is traditionally expertly accompanied. Pete Johnson's orchestra takes care of that here.
This second volume in the 'Hi-Strung R & B' series again contains some of the best of the best rocking rhythm & blues and doo-wop. 'Hi-Strung R & B' is a series that certainly deserves a place in the collection of fans of these genres.

The Cinelli Brothers are an award-winning four-piece band from London, consisting of Italians Marco and Alessandro Cinelli, London-born Tom Julian Jones and Stephen Giry who hails from France. They are a true melting pot of musicality, showmanship and charisma. Their sound is an amalgam of soul and blues, with a contemporary twist that honors the songwriting craftsmanship of their greatest influences. The band has released four albums, including their latest studio album 'Almost Exactly', recorded in Woodstock, NY. The Cinelli Brothers celebrated all this with an album release show at a sold-out The Cutting Room in New York City. Is it soul or lived-in blues, it doesn't really matter to them. Highly recommended!

Boogie Beasts have released a fourth studio album with 'Neon Skies & Different Highs'. We found again those raw Delta and swampy blues tunes in their sound for several years, but now the band sounds more eclectic than ever. Inspired songs, inspiring by some gospel, soul, R&B, psychedelics, a dash of desert blues and a touch of hip hop, the latter to make everything a little hipper. Producer Koenraad Foesters was given a larger role and actually serves as the fifth band member. Between the songs we find four 'Interlude', which makes a switch to keep you with that psychosis for a while.

Driftless Girl’ is produced by the multi-talented Jolie Holland, with whom DeLisle connected via social media over the Covid period. Holland brought in Buck Meek (Big Thief) with whom she had worked as co-writer and performer on their respective 2023 releases.  She also involved  Nikki Grossman (The Sapsuckers) and guitarist and mixing engineer Adam Brisbin. Eight of the eleven tracks are DeLisle originals.  This is delicious and seductive country….

​Formed in 1970 by Deep Purple bassist and co-founder Nick Simper to back Marsha Hunt, Warhorse soon became a band in its own right – recording a first, self-titled album for Vertigo that very same year and releasing ‘Red Sea’ two years later, though with a different line-up. Cherry Red re-mastered both albums, adding four live recordings of LP-material and seven demos of new songs
The songs are OK, the playing is fine and at times excellent, the overall sound typical of the hard rock scene of the early 1970s, but all in all too indistinctive. Singer Ashley Holt makes the difference and when he decided to join Rick Wakeman’s English Rock Ensemble, gone too was Warhorse’ main asset. 
Let me, therefore, draw your attention to the demos. Meant for a third album – that never came about – they show Simper had a new direction in mind: the tunes are more melodic and a few degrees softer, with the singer having his screaming skills under control. The record companies thought different.

Similarly, ‘Kintsugi’ the first album in six years from Small Town Jones, aka Devon singer-songwriter Jim Jones, in collaboration with long-time friend, drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Michael Reed, celebrates reunion, examines our emotional scars and finds joy in our flaws.

The Ford Motor Company was founded on June 16, 1903 by Henry Ford. That same year, Ford achieved its first success with the production of the 'Model A'. A model that was extremely popular in the late 1940s as a basis for designing and building Hot Rods. After the end of the Second World War, the 'T model' (1910-1920), the 'As model' (1928-1931) and the 'Bs model' (1932-1934) were extremely popular among Hot Rod enthusiasts. In the fifties it were the rockers who organized races for it. In the more luxurious segment of the car industry, Ford scored with the Lincoln, named after President Abraham Lincoln. However, not all models that Ford launched were successful. The 1949 to 1951 Fords were labeled as 'shoe box cars' and the Ford Edsel, named after Henry's son, was a commercial flop. The reasons for the lack of success were the appearance, the economic recession, the price problem and the numerous production problems, such as defective welds, leaking trunks and problems with the power steering.
Ford later expanded its branches worldwide, which gave the brand a lot of name recognition. Over the years, Ford allo bought Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin.
Reasons enough to put Ford in the spotlight on its 121st anniversary with 30 songs by well-known and lesser-known artists. The songs may have the name 'Ford' in the lyrics or the bands may have chosen a Ford model as the name.
'Start the engine and let's go'! Who immediately sounds through the speakers is Curtis Gordon, who delivers a hell of a rockabilly song with 'Draggin''. Curtis is followed by class act Gene Vincent who talks about his 'Pink Thunderbird', 'with a red fur seat'. Eddie Cochran also honored Ford with 'Pink Peg Slacks' and in 'Somethin' Else'.
More famous people arrive with Janis Martin. She transformed Buck Griffin's 'Let's Elope Baby' into a real rock 'n' roller. 'She had a high speed motor in a 44 coupe', impressed the rocking 'Hot Rod Baby' Rocky Davis. Lefty Nicks gives his 'Model A-Ford Blues' an authentic country blues jacket. The T-model inspired Rosco Gordon for his 'T-Model Boogie'. Willie Love was more in the mood for a stronger engine. He chose 'V8 Ford', a song that exudes a slow blues atmosphere. A beautiful piece of blues harp is cleverly contained in 'Mercury Boogie' by K.C Douglas Trio.
Betty Rogers presents a wonderful cover version of Hank Williams' 'Hey Good Lookin''. Buddy Knox also opted for a cover. He took Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' and gave it a great rockabilly twist.
For beautiful doo-wop you can go to The Fairlanes and 'Johnny Rhythm'. The Fairlanes later appear together with lead singer Charles Perrywell in 'Come Along With Me', which has a Chuck Berry edge. You get Chuck Berry himself in 'Jaguar and Thunderbird'.
More doo-wop comes with the band that chose a Ford model as the group name, namely The Edsels. They go up-tempo in 'Shake Sherry Shake'. The Lincolns also chose their group name in the same way. They are present with the also uptempo 'Pleasin' You - Pleases Me'.
There is also beautiful harmony singing with the vocal women's group The Delicates in 'Black And White Thunderbird'. Another vocal group The Paramounts chose the same model with 'Thunderbird Baby'. You can certainly rock on the sax-driven instrumental 'What's The Word' by The Thunder Rocks. Another nice instrumental serves up Sunset Dragster's Orchestra. You can hear what a Thunderbird should sound like in their 'Boss T Bird'.
The album ends with 'Arkie Meets The Judge' by Arkie Shibley and The Mountain Dew Boys, set to a hillbilly instrumental background.
'121 Years Of The Ford Car' is not only a beautiful ode to a car brand that made mobility possible for the general public, but also offers a collection of sublime songs in genres such as blues, rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and hillbilly. This album is definitely recommended on a long car trip, or at home in your familiar surroundings. The choice is yours!

Singer-songwriter, Giulia (Julia) Millanta, is a native-born Italian from Florence who now calls Austin, Texas home. A creative and prolific artist, she has been touring nationally throughout the USA and internationally (Europe, UK) for the past 10 years. She is about to release her 9th record "Only Luna Knows". 

Stef Kamil Carlens cannot be pigeonholed into just one musical genre, as he has proven several times. He also knows how to surprise the listener with every new album. He does this again with 'Be(e) Who You Wanna Be(e)', an album that has a playful and funky character. Stef Kamil's immense collection of musical instruments is well known. It goes without saying that an impressive number of them are present on this album. An old drum machine, various keyboards, many analog synthesizers, tenor and baritone saxes and a driving bass, they are all present in abundance. Carlens has already established himself with verve as a songwriter, but he also makes no secret of his appreciation for his musical heroes. Not so now. The album opens with the almost 6-minute long 'The Future', a song that Prince wrote for the soundtrack of Tim Burton's version of 'Batman'. Dez Monas 'Suspicion' floats on a relentlessly driving Fender Rhodes riff, giving the song a very unique look at funk. Stef Kamil borrowed 'C'est Comment Qu'On Freine' from Alain Bashung, with lyrics by Serge Gainsbourg. Funky guitars and creative horns accompany Carlens, who can once again express his love for Molière's language.
His own work certainly includes the slower 'Love Me Like A Prayer', as well as the 'Take A Little Time' floating on a soft funky groove.
The album has 8 songs, usually lasting more than 5 or 6 minutes. The 7.20 minute 'Walk On Red, Stop On Green' is extremely powerful, which takes you into an irresistible trance. Song that was also released as a single. Great choice!
With 'Be(e) Who You Wanna Be(e)', Stef Kamil Carlens proves once again that he belongs to the top of the Belgian musicians.

In the previous edition of New Releases, we already talked about the psychedelic band from Cardiff, Wales: Soft Hearted Scientist. Their recent album 'Waltz Of The Weekend' surpasses all expectations and ranges from psych pop to prog rock. The album is available on a 75-minute CD, but also on a triple colored vinyl set with some remixes not found on the CD. Connoisseurs claim that the work is on par with 'Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake' (Small Faces) and 'Parachute' (The Pretty Things). The sounds of the sixties and seventies burst out of your speakers like a colorful waterfall of nostalgia. Here's a sample of their ingenuity in 'Waltz Of The Weekend'.

Also already available on CD and from August on LP is the new trip-hop/dream-pop album from the Italian duo Pinhdar: 'A Sparkle On The Dark Water'. Singer Cecilia Miradoli and guitarist Max Tarenzi spectacularly explore the boundaries between trip-hop, dark wave, and electronics. Splendid, just listen to 'Little Light'.
If you're not yet familiar with the releases on Fruits de Mer Records, you can still listen to some compilations. This month sees the release of a CD collection from The Honey Pot and Crystal Jacqueline featuring songs from their back catalog under the name 'An Introduction To'. The CD includes songs by guitarist Icarus Peel and some beautifully executed covers such as 'Sympathy' (Rare Bird) and 'White Rabbit' (Jefferson Airplane).

With 'Bird On A Wire', this Dutch roots band has added a more than worthy successor to the previously released 'Close To You' and '69 Automobile' to its list of achievements. The album has no fewer than 14 tracks, all of which came from the pen of singer and guitarist PJ Snijders. Tracks that all have their roots in American roots music. You can call it a mix of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and country, but it would be better to call it Supersonicssound. After all, the individuality that this album also radiates is undoubtedly exceptional. Unlike many other bands, Supersonics has successfully opted for a clear and, above all, unique sound. This is primarily because the band should not seek refuge in covering other people's work. PJ has a perfect sense of which of his compositions do the band justice. We start up-tempo with 'Tangled Up', which immediately shows high quality. Beautiful guitar work and vocals, as well as a solid rhythm section. Another plus is that PJ Snijders' compositions are provided with lyrics with content, which also contain a lot of life wisdom. Be sure to listen to 'Not About The Money' and 'Reap What You Sow'. The title track has an inspiring country feeling. That feeling is even more evident in 'Highway 101', with guitars of the best kind once again. A formidable song that takes you on a highway trip. With the subdued 'Closer To The Fire' the band stylishly eases off the accelerator and also pay attention to the sublime keyboard work. A whistling Jeroen van Delden, sounds of footsteps and a rattlesnake put 'Truth Or Consequenses' firmly on the country path. As far as atmosphere is concerned, this is a bull's eye. You can rock out again during 'Foolproof Heart'. Beautiful harmony vocals certainly characterize 'Methamphetamines' and you will undoubtedly get the 'real American feel' with 'Billy's Lament'. When you think you've had it all, the gentlemen surprise you again with closing track 'Stay', a tearjerker of size, beautifully colored on keys.
It is clear that 'Bird On A Wire' only contains highlights. Great songs, surprising arrangements, formidable and creative guitar parts, a rock-solid rhythm section and PJ's vocal empathy can all be found in abundance on this album. Are you looking for an album with impressive original roots songs? Look no further, 'Bird On A Wire' is the answer.

Three time Blues Foundation Traditional Female Artist award winner, Sue Foley’s new album One Guitar Woman is a heartfelt tribute to the female pioneers of the guitar - including Memphis Minnie, Lydia Mendoza, Maybelle Carter, Ida Presti, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. This 20th Anniversary vinyl LP version of one of the label’s most honored and beloved records: Have A Little Faith by our friend, the iconic soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples. We’ve created it for Record Store Day on April 20, to help celebrate the independent record stores that have been the staunch supporters of American roots music for so many years, as well as to celebrate the year of Mavis’ 85th birthday. As Mavis remembers in her liner notes for this Anniversary edition, “Have A Little Faith was the beginning of my solo career.” Upon the passing of Mavis' father -- family patriarch and Staple Singers leader Roebuck “Pops” Staples -- Mavis' future felt uncertain. She was unsure how to continue as a solo artist. She self-financed and recorded her own album, working with Chicago co-producer and songwriter Jim Tullio. (Jim and Mavis connected when he brought her a new song called In Times Like These, written after 9/11, and asked her to record it. That was the beginning of Have A Little Faith.) After being turned down by major labels, Jim and Mavis brought the album to Alligator. We immediately heard the magic of her soul-deep commitment in these tracks. Mavis’ performances were thrilling, and the choice of songs and Jim’s crystalline mixes were perfect. Twenty years later, the whole album is still inspirational. “Every song on Have A Little Faith is straight from my heart,” Mavis says. It's a stirring collection of timeless, uplifting songs, deeply rooted in Mavis’ faith and spirituality.

This first volume to be called 'Rock House' shows that there are still many rocking rhythm & blues gems to be discovered. This immediately becomes clear when Jimmy Breedlove covers 'Whole Lot-Ta Shakin' Goin' On' and the song is embellished with a scorching sax solo. 'Walk Right In' is a classic that is served here by Bonita Cole accompanied by Bill Harvey's orchestra. Big Maybelle started out as a gospel singer, but she soon chose rhythm & blues. She always delivered them with enormous power, as here in the title track of this album. What a fantastic song! 'Land Of 1000 Dances' was immortalized by Wilson Pickett. Yet it was the song's composer Chris Kenner who recorded it first. Here you can hear Kenner with 'Don't Make No Noise'. 'Wow Wow' by Willie Eggins certainly sounds familiar. He also plays an excellent piece of piano. Jackie Wilson needs no further introduction. In his well-known style he serves 'Why Can't You Be Mine'. Michael Clark only had one hit, 'None Of These Girls'. Incomprehensible when you hear this song, because talent was abundantly present. Mabel Lee was a celebrated dancer and as an actress she appeared in many films. That she was also convincing as a vocalist is proven by 'He's My Guy', where she is accompanied by the Tee Joe orchestra. When you talk about rocking rhythm & blues, it would be unforgivable to overlook Chuck Berry. That doesn't happen, because here he is present with 'Let It Rock', performed in his inimitable style. Saxophonist Sam Taylor and guitarist Mickey Baker played on many well-known rhythm & blues recordings. Both gentlemen are also present on 'I Don't Know' by the vocal group The Keynotes. Little Esther scored in the fifties as a rhythm & blues singer. Here you can hear her in 'Cupid's Boogie', a stunning duet with Mel Walker. The duo receives musical support from Johnny Otis and his orchestra. Otis and his men also back Billy Robbins in the swinging 'Bring Her Back To Me'. New Orleans was the birthplace of Big Boy Myles. This is also reflected in 'That Girl I Married', which he recorded with The Sha-Wees. The 'duck walk' was Chuck Berry's trademark during performances. Here you get a formidable instrumental 'The Duck Walk' by Chuck Higgins.
Furthermore, this album contains wonderful harmony vocals. This is represented by The Wanderers with 'Heh Mae Ethel', 5 Johnson Brothers in 'Happy Rock And Roll', The Spiders with 'I Didn't Want To Do It', Bobby Day in 'The Bluebird, The Buzzard And The Oriole ', Charlie White And The Playboys in 'Honeybun', The Wonders with 'Bop-Bop-Baby' and certainly in 'My Hi-Fi Baby' by Castaleers with lead vocals by Richard Jones.

Heather Little is a singer and songwriter from Texas. She released Wings Like These, her first full-length album, back in 2013, but at that point was already known for her songwriting. Now she is promoting her new release 'By Now'.
