Deze boxset van liefst 52 CD's, die ook werd geleverd met een mooie Hohner Puck Harmonica en een booklet van 28 pagina's met biografieën van de belangrijkste blues-artiesten, heeft een uitzonderlijke en historische waarde. Verder vinden we nog een beperkte inlage over de Marineband harmonica van Hohner. Of je nu een doorwinterde bluesfanaat bent, of een leek in dit muziekgenre, dit is een considerabel naslagwerk. Dit is absoluut ook een van de meest uitgebreide bluescollecties. Meer dan 1000 nummers van zowel bekende als minder bekende artiesten uit diverse tijdperken. Met muziek die ook The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, John Mayall en heel wat andere hedendaagse grootheden heeft beïnvloed. De albums divergeren van Delta blues naar verstedelijkte blues tunes.
 
We warmen ons op aan de cd’s van grootheden als onder meer Billy ‘Boy’ Arnold, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland’, Big Bil Broonzy, de New Orleans pianoblues van Champion Jack Dupree, de hypnotiserende tunes van Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Chicagoan Buddy Guy en Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, al ontbreekt zijn ‘Constipation Blues’ uit 1969. CD 1 opent met Kokomo Arnold, een neef van John Wiggs die in de jaren ’20 naar Chicago verhuisde waar hij hoofdzakelijk de kost verdiende met bootlegging. Zijn beroemdste song ‘Milkcow Blues’, die ook ooit werd gecoverd door Elvis ontbreekt helaas in de collectie. De tien originele Arnold songs prijken hier samen met tien Billy Boy Arnold tracks. Billy Boy komt uit Chicago en is een meester mondharmonicaspeler.
 
Op CD 2 hebben we Doo-wop en R&B artiest Richard Berry en Robert Hick aka Barbecue Bob. Twee ontdekkingen die heel wat hits bij elkaar penden. Berry heeft onder meer de wereldhit ‘Louie, Louie’ op zijn credits. Een hit voor The Kingsmen en ‘Have Love, Will Travel’ dat door heel wat bands en artiesten is gecoverd. Barbecue Bob is dan weer een pionier van de Atlanta bluesscene. Hij werd amper 29 jaar. Hij was een mentor voor Blind Willie McTell en Curley Weaver. Hicks nummer 'Motherless Child Blues' werd ooit op de plaat gezet door Eric Clapton.
 
Op CD 3 vinden we Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland’ en de Texaanse pianolegende Charles Brown. Op CD 4 trekt, naast Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown’ vooral New Orleans legende Louisa ‘Blue Lu Barker’ Dupont onze aandacht. Ze speelde vaak in de jaren dertig met haar echtgenoot/gitarist Danny Barker. Ook de hitsingle ‘A Little Bird Told Me’ prijkt hier op de playlist. Op CD 5 staan Big Bill Broonzy en de ragtime van Blind Blake met elk tien songs. Enkel Scrapper Blackwell prijkt hier met zijn akoestische Piedmont blues picker-song ‘Kokomo Blues’, een cover van Kokomo Arnold.
 
Champion Jack Dupree en Cousin Joe prijken op CD 6. New Orleans bluesartiest Cousin Joe maakte vooral opnamen als Smilin’ Joe en toerde met Muddy waters en Otis Spann door Engeland in de jaren ’60. Scrapper Blackwell is terug op CD 7, maar dit keer in duo met pianist Leroy Carr. Knappe pre-war blues die zelfs Robert Johnson beïnvloedde. Het duo deelt de release samen met Pee Wee ‘Connie Curtis’ Crayton. Een van zijn eerste opnamen was de instrumental ‘Blues After Hours’, dat nummer 1 werd in de Billboard R&b chart in 1947, hier het afsluitende nummer. CD 8 is volledig aan Bo Diddley geconsecreerd. Twintig nummers met die zo herkenbare Diddley tunes. Van ‘I’m A Man over’ Mona’, ‘Road Runner’  en ‘The Story Of Bo Diddley’.
 
Songsmid Willie Dixon en Floyd Dixon nemen CD 9 in beslag. Floyd is een R&B pianist die een grote hit had met zijn Floyd Dixon Trio en de jump blues single ‘Dallas Blues’ in 1949. Al had hij een hoogste notering met ‘Telephone Blues’ op nr.4 in 1951. New Orleans bluesgitarist Snooks Eaglin en Sleepy John Estes die bekendheid verwierf met zijn distinctieve zangstijl prijken op CD 10. Tegen de tijd dat Delmark Records’ Bob Koester Sleepy John ontdekte was hij haast blind en leefde hij in armoede. Toch maakte hij samen met
Yank Rachell en Hammie Nixon zijn opwachting op het Newport Folk Festival in 1964.
 
CD 11 is voorbestemd voor Lowell Fulson en The Four Blazes. Deze laatste band uit Chicago was een instrumentale groep die populair was in de jaren 1940-’50. De groep werd in 1940 gevormd door drummer Paul Lindsley "Jelly" Holt, een Chicago-muzikant die eerder lid was geweest van de Five Rhythm Rocketeers. Hun eerste release ‘Mary Jo’, werd in augustus 1952 # 1 in de R & B-hitlijsten. Buddy Guy staat op  CD 12. Slecht een vijftal songs van een van de langst overgebleven legendarische Chicago bluesartiesten staan op deze box. Buddy deelt de release met Arthur Gunter en Slim Gaillard. Twee van de meest onderschatte artiesten. Gunter heeft ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ neergepend en opgenomen in 1954 voor Excello Records, wat later ook een grote hit was voor Elvis Presley. Ook Bulee "Slim" Gaillard heeft een bewogen leven achter de rug. Met zijn opwindende boogiewoogie sound had hij enkel opnamen op het label Queen Records. Zijn openingssong ‘Walkin’ & Cookin’ Blues’ is een jazzy instrumentale wat zijn vingervlugheid perfect etaleert.
 
John Lee Hooker (CD 13) hoeft ook hier geen betoog meer. Bluesshouter en R&B vocalist Wynonie Harris had enkele top-10 hits tussen 1946 en ’52 en wordt aanschouwd als een van de grondleggers van de rock-‘n-roll. Het bigband gemotiveerde ‘Cock-A-Doodle-Doo’ uit 1945 (met Johnny Otis op drums) en ‘Around The Clock Pt 1 &2’ waren jukebox hits. CD 14 is voor Earl Hooker, met vier nummers en de altijd spectaculaire Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Hij opent met zijn
‘I Putt A Spell On You’, dé CCR-hit.
 
Lightnin’ Hopkins (CD 15) en Howlin’ Wolf op CD 16 hebben de eer om de volledige plaat te bestrijken. Met twintig nummers krijgen we een kleine schets uit hun rijkelijk repertoire. Alberta Hunter en Ivory Joe Hunter prijken op CD 17. Alberta verwierf internationale faam met haar krachtige en ritmisch aanstekelijke stem. Haar ‘Down Hearted Blues’, origineel uit 1922 mag hier de dnas openen. Pianist Ivory Joe Hunter’s ‘Heaven Came Down To Earth’, was samen met zijn band ‘his Ivorytones’, een grote doo-wop hits in 1955. Ivory sluit hier af met de single ‘She’s Gone’ uit 1951, origineel uitgebracht op het label Shellac Records.
 
Robert Johnson krijgt CD 18 aangemeten. Hij is een van de grootste artiesten die een invloed heeft uitgeoefend op een hele generatie. Johnson nam deel aan slechts twee opnamesessies, een in San Antonio in 1936 en een in Dallas in 1937. Van de 29 nummers die hij ooit registreerde, prijken er hier liefst twintig in de catalogi. Wie ook beïnvloed was door Robert Johnson was  Elmore James. Ook hij kon gerust een hele cd vullen, maar Elmore kreeg hier negen nummers toegewezen. ‘The King Of Slidegitaar’ staat samen met Lonnie Johnson op CD 19. Helaas geen ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ en ‘The Sky Is Crying’, maar wel oa. ‘Dust My Broom’, ‘Cry For Me Baby’, ‘It Hurts Me Too’ en ‘Hawaiian Boogie’. Johnson was een pionier op de electrische viool. Met zijn ‘Sweet Potato Blues’ en ‘Deep Blue Sea Blues’ neemt hij ons mee naar zijn geboortestreek New Orleans.
 
CD 20 is voorbestemd voor Blind Willie Johnson, Tommy Johnson en Skip James. Blind Willie Johnson verweefde in zijn sound met heel wat gospeltunes. ‘Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground’, Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed’ en Praise God I’m Satisfied’ zijn schitterende chapiters uit zijn oeuvre. Tommy Johnson is een van de pioniers van de Delta blues. ‘Cool Of Water Blues’, hier de openingssong, werd ooit herwerkt tot ‘Asked For Water’ en op plaat gezet door Howlin’ Wolf. Net zoals ook de legendarische bluesband Canned Heat, die zich naar Johnsons gelijknamige nummer ‘Canned Heat Boogie’ noemde. Skip James kwam uit Philadelphia en is ook gerelateerd aan de Delta blues. Al de vijf nummers hier zoals, ‘22-20 Blues’ en ‘If You Haven't Any Hay Get On Down The Road’ komen uit 1931. B.B. King (CD 21) krijg uiteraard, net zoals Chicago blues harpmaster Little Walter (CD 22) en Leadbelly (CD 24) een heel album toebedeeld.
 
Lightnin’ Slim staat samen met J.B. Lenoir op CD 23. Slim had heel wat opnamen voor het label Excello Records. Zijn Louisiana blues sound kenmerkt zich hier met ‘Bad Luck Blues’, zijn eerste opname trouwens, ‘Rock Me mama’, ‘Wintertime Blues’ en enkel andere parels. J.B. Lenoir was actief in de Chicago blues scene tussen 1950 en ’60. Hij kwam uit Mississippi maar verhuisde naar The Windy City in 1949.  Hij werd een invloedrijke elektrische gitarist en geeft hier met ‘I Have Married’, Slow Down Woman’ en ‘Play A Little While’ een statement.
 
CD 25 is voor Little Willie John en Smiley Lewis voorbehouden. Lewis kwam uit New Orleans. Zijn grote hits zoals ‘I Hear You Knocking’ en ‘Shame Shame Shame’ staan hier helaas niet op, maar wel verdoken songs als ‘Last Night’ en ‘No Letter Today’. Little Willie John kwam in de populariteit met nummers als ‘Fever’, en stond in de R&B hitlijsten met nummers als ‘All Around the World’ (1955), ‘Need Your Love So Bad’ (1956), ‘Talk to Me, Talk to Me (1958) en ‘Leave My Kitten Alone’ uit 1960.
 
Countryblues vinden we op CD 26 met Furry Lewis. Hij opende zelfs twee keer voor The Rolling Stones en had schitterende opnamen met ‘Everybody’s Blues’, ‘Jemmy Roll’ en ‘Furry’s Blues’. Robert Lockwood opent hier met Robert Johnson’s ‘Dust My Broom’. Hij was de enige gitarist die rechtstreeks van Robert Johnson heeft leren spelen. Maar ook zijn originele nummers als ‘Pearl B’ en ‘Sweet Woman From Maine’ zijn knappe Delta blues tracks.
 
Magic Sam (5-tracks) en Jimmy McCracklin 20 songs nemen ons bij het strot op CD 27. Magic Sam performde met Muddy Waters en Little Walter. ‘All Your Love’, Love Me With A Feeling’, ‘Everything Gonna Be Alright’ en ’21 Days In Jail’ komen uit zijn Cobra Records catalogus. Jimmy McCracklin was een voorname West Coast blues en jump blues artiest. De single ‘The Walk’ uit 1958 stond zelfs nr.7 in de Popcharts. Zijn begeleidingsband The Blues Blasters was de aanleiding tot de bandnaam The Blasters, de formatie rond Phil en Dave Alvin.
 
Op Volume 28 staan Percy Mayfield en Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers zij aan zij. Louisiana’s Percy Mayfield had grote hits met het R&B ‘Please Send Me Someone To Love’, hier de openingstrack, en ‘Hit The Road Jack’. Helaas vinden we hier dit laatste nummer niet terug. ‘Lost Love’, ‘The River’s Invention’ en ‘What a Fool I was’ scoorden allen hoog in de charts. Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers creëren een big band feel met nummers als ‘Be Cool’, ‘Gee, It’s Rough’ en het afsluitende ‘I Don’t Know, Yes I Know’, uit The Dolphin Sessions 1952-1954.
 
Met Memphis Minnie en Big Maybelle  (CD 29) krijgen we nog eens wat vrouwelijk gezelschap. Ze registreerde ooit meer dan 200 nummers. Als bluesdiva stond Minnie werkelijk haar mannetje in deze blueswereld. De openingstrack ‘Frisco Town’ komt uit 1929 en Minnie liet zich hier begeleiden door Kansas Joe McCoy op gitaar. ‘Boy Friend Blues’ en ‘’Buble Bee’ zijn werkelijk goosebumps songs. Big Maybelle komt uit de gospel. Haar song ‘Gabbin’ Blues’ was een hit en kwam net zoals ‘Way Back Home’ uit de periode van OKeh Records. Helaas ontbreekt hier haar originele ‘Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On,  de grote hit voor Jerry Lee Lewis.
 
Volume 30, Roy Milton en Amos Milburn. Vocalist/drummer Roy Miton and His Solid Senders waren een R&B en jumpblues band uit Oklahoma. De tracks ‘Playboy Blues’ en ‘Cryin' and Singin' the Blues’ komen uit de periode 1950. Pianist/vocalist Amos Milburn had hits met songs als ‘Chicken Shack Boogie’, ‘All Is Well’ en ‘One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer’. Maar ook zijn ‘Let’s Have A Party’ staat hier te blinken.
 
Big Maceo en Blind Willie McTell delen samen CD 31. Pianist/vocalist Big Maceo Merriweather verhuisde van zijn geboortestad Atlanta naar Chicago. Daar ontmoette hij Big Bill Broonzy en Tampa Red met wie hij zijn eerste opnamen maakte. Zijn opening song hier ‘Worried Life Blues’ werd gecoverd door Eric Clapton. ‘I Got The Blues’ en ‘Poor Keely Blues’ zijn gerelateerd aan de Delta blues, met een verstedelijkt geluid. Blind Willie McTell stelt hier in tien tracks zijn Piedmont blues voor. Zijn gesynchroniseerde fingerstyle-gitaartechnieken op zijn 12-snarige gitaar leidt zich perfect voor nummers als ‘Georgia Rag’, ‘Low Down Blues’, ‘Rollin’ Mama Blues’ en vele andere tracks.
 
The Bluesmen Memphis Slim en Tommy McClennan zijn voorbestemd voor Volume 32. Memphis Slim was een boogiewoogie pianist die ons ook niet onberoerd laat. Met nummers als ‘Really Got The Blues’, ‘Havin’ Fun’, ‘Blues For My Baby’ en ‘Slim’s Blues’ is het verdomd moeilijk stilzitten. Onbekend is onbemind, dat is vooral Tommy McClennan. Toch is hij één van meest succesvolle down-home bluesartiesten. Hij had liefst 20 singles voor het Bluebird-label tussen 1939-1942.  ‘Bottle It Up and Go', 'Whisley Headed Woman', 'Travelin' en ‘Highway No. 51 Blues ' zijn meer dan het ontdekken waard.
 
We trekken opnieuw naar Mississippi op CD 33 voor Mississippi Fred McDowell en Mississippi John Hurt. Countryhill blues, daar stond Fred McDowell voor bekend. In 1928 verhuisde hij naar Mississippi om katoen te plukken. Na jaren te hebben gespeeld in kleine juke joints werd McDowell in 1959 ontdekt door de rondzwervende folklore-musicoloog Alan Lomax en Shirley Collins. We krijgen hier tien originele McDowells songs zoals ‘I’m Going Down The River’, ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’ en ’61 Highway’. Autodidact gitarist/vocalist Mississippi John Hurt werd veel later ontdekt door Tom Hoskins in 1963. Countryblues avant la lettre. ‘Candy Man Blues’, ‘Blessed Be The Name’ en ‘Avalon Blues’. Alle nummers hier werden ooit opgenomen voor het label op Okeh Records in 1928.
 
CD 34, Robert Lee McCollum was bluesmuzikant die speelde en opnam onder de pseudoniemen Robert Lee McCoy en Robert Nighthawk. Hij was ook de vader van Sam Carr, de legendarische drummer. Hij woonde een tijdje in Memphis en speelde in de jaren zestig op Chicago’s Maxwell Street. Met zijn lage donkere stem en uitmuntende slidegitaar techniek zijn ‘Cryin’ Won’t Help’, ‘Bricks In My Pilow’ en ‘Take It Easy, Baby’ vooraanstaande bluesnummers. Johnny Otis was zoveel meer dan een bluesartiest. Hij was drummer, zanger, componist, arrangeur, bandleider, talentscout, discjockey, platenproducent, presentator van een televisieprogramma én zoveel meer. Hij had een grote invloed op de rock-‘n-roll geschiedenis. Tien songs doen eigenlijk zijn rijke muzikale geschiedenis eer aan. Hij opent hier met de swingende instrumentale ‘Good Ole Blues’ uit 1950 op Modern Records. Blazers en opwindende gitaarriffs vormen de basis en leiden ons naar ‘Mean Ole Gal’. De shuffle ‘New Orleans Shuffle’ mag uiteindelijk de dans beëindigen.
 
Volume 35; Charley Patton en Snooky Pryor. The Father Of The Delta Blues Charley Patton werd amper 43-jaar toen hij overleed op de plantage Heathman-Dedham in Sunflower County, Mississippi. Enkele nummers komen uit zijn Paramount Recordings opnamen zoals ‘Prayer Of Death pt.1’ en ‘Watch And Pray’. Snooky Pryor is een Chicago mondharmonica blues legende. Hij zou één van de pioniers van de versterkte harptunes zijn. ‘Telephone Blues’ was de B-kant van de single ‘Boogie’ in 1948 én de singles ‘Stockyard Blues’ en ‘Keep What You Got’, werden geregistreerd met de zanger/gitarist Floyd Jones.
 
Met CD 36  trekken we naar New Orleans en Professor Longhair. Hij heeft die typerende New Orleans stijl in zijn piano. Een smeltkroes van blues, jazz, rumba, mambo en zelfs calypso. Dansen doen we graag op ‘Go To The Mardi Grass’, ‘In The Night’, ‘Willie Mae’ en ‘Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand’. Blues Hall of Famer Junior Parker kwam uit Memphis. Hij betovert ons met zijn zweetzoete stem. ‘Feelin 'Good’,  dat een topnotering op nummer vijf bereikte in de Amerikaanse Billboard R&B chart  en 'Mystery Train ', dat werd opgenomen door Elvis Presley, waren destijds kaskrakkers. Maar ook ‘Sittin' at the Bar’, ‘Sittin' At The Window’ en "’Sittin', Drinkin' and Thinkin’ waren succesnummers voor Little Junior's Blue Flames in 1954  op het label Sun Records.
 
Jimmy Reed en Otis Rush staan beiden op Volume 37. Jimmy Reed’s ‘Baby What You Want Me to Do’, ‘Big Boss Man’ uit 1961 en ‘Meet Me’ staan hier wel op cd. Helaas ontbreken ‘Honest I Do’ en misschien wel zijn grootste succes ‘Bright Lights Big City’. Otis Rush staat bekend om zijn West Side Chicago blues. ‘Checking On My Baby’, ‘All Your Love’ en ‘It Takes Time’ zijn onvervalste Chicago blues songs. Jimmy Rushing was zowel thuis in de jazz als de blues scene. Hij was vooral bekend als de vocalist van Count Basie 's Orchestra in de periode van 1935 tot 1948. Zijn krachtige vocalen bereiken moeiteloos het niveau van een bariton en tenor. Ledbetter’s ‘Good Morning Blues’ mag hier openen, om al snel te vervolgen met Ma Rainey’s ‘See See Rider’. Maar Jimmy’s originele songs als ‘Sometimes I Think I do’ en My Friend Mr. Blues’ zijn een ontdekking waard. Tampa Red vervolledigt Volume 38. Opnieuw knappe Chicago blues. Red was befaamd voor zijn single-string slide gitaarstijl. Hij heeft ongeveer 335 nummers opgenomen op 78-toeren platen. Hier krijgen we tien voorname songs uit zijn rijkelijke setlist. ‘You Missed A Good Man’, ‘Crying’ Won’t Help’ en ‘Big Stars Falling Blues’ hebben allen Hudson Whittaker credits aka Tampa Red.
 
Bessie Smith krijgt volledig Volume 39 toegewezen. Ze heeft als bijnaam ‘Empress of the Blues’ en was de populairste vrouwelijke blueszangeres van de jaren 1920 en 1930. De beide kanten van haar eerste plaat ‘Downhearted Blues’, hier de openingstrack waren hits. Smith had ook heel wat thema’s doorheen haar nummers. ‘Lady Luck Blues’, ‘Jail House Blues’ en ‘Graveyard Dream Blues’ werden destijds kritisch benaderd. ‘Gulf Coast Blues’ was een hit in 1923, net zoals ‘Aggravati ‘Papa’.
 
Op Volume 40  krijgen we Huey ‘Piano’ Smith en Frankie Lee Sims. Pianist Huey ‘Piano’ Smith komt, net zoals Sims uit New Orleans en had een grote invloed op de rock-‘n-roll. Zijn pianospel omvat de boogiewoogie-stijl. Die typerende sound vinden we hier ook terug in nummers als ‘Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogiewoogie Flu’, ‘Hush Your Mouth’ en ‘Little Liza Jane’.
Franlie Lee Sims had in zijn carrière negen singles. Hij verhuisde naar Texas en was de neef van Lightnin’ Hopkins. Sims is één van de belangrijkste postwar Texas blues artiesten. Hij scoorde destijds met nummers als ‘Lucy Mae Blues’, ‘Long Gone’ en ‘Married Woman’.
 
Volume 41; Roosevelt Sykes en Son House. Sykes, The Honeydripper staat vooral bekend voor zijn barrelhouse pianoblues-stijl. Hij had veertien platen en daaruit werden hier tien songs geselecteerd. ’44 Blues’, ‘Knock Me Out’ en vooral ‘The Honeydripper’ zijn voorname opnamen. De emotionele zangstijl van Son House belichaamt zijn Delta blues sound. Vooral zijn opnamen voor het label Paramount Records zijn legendarisch. ‘Country Farm Blues’ is haast autodidactisch, net zoals zijn registraties ‘Walking Blues’ en ‘Levee Camp Blues’, met Willie Brown, Fiddlin' Joe Martin en Leroy Williams voor de  Library of Congress en Fisk University.
‘The Pony Blues’ en ‘Depot Blues’ werden dan weer opgenomen in 1942 in Robbinsonville, Mississippi.
 
CD 42 is toegewijd aan Sunnyland Slim en Johnny Shines. Slim is een begaafd pianist die werd geboren in Vance, Mississippi Delta. Hij trok naar Chicago en speelde met Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf en Little Walter. De elf tracks hebben Albert ‘Sunnyland Slim’ Luandrew credits.
Zijn vingerzettingen zijn memorabel op songs als ‘Hit The Road Again’, ‘I Done You Wrong’ en ‘Mud Kicking Woman’. Johnny Shines leerde gitaar spelen door zijn moeder. Hij bracht een groot deel van zijn jeugd door in Memphis en speelde slidegitaar in juke joints en op Beale Street. Hij verhuisde in 1932 naar Hughes, Arkansas, werkte op boerderijen en ontmoette toevallig Robert Johnson, zijn grootste invloed. Johnson gaf hem de inspiratie om terug te keren naar de blues en het duo trok door het land. Een jaar voor Johnson’s dood in 1938 scheidden uiteindelijk hun wegen. Shines trok naar Chicago en maakte schitterende opnamen in de jaren ’50 zoals ‘Ramblin’, ‘Cool Drive’ en ‘No Name Blues’
 
Volume 43 belicht twee grote en legendarische bluesdiva’s. De uitbundige Big Mama Thornton verkocht destijds meer dan twee miljoen exemplaren van de single ‘Hound Dog’. Het nummer bleef liefst zeven weken op nummer 1 geparkeerd in de Billboard R&B chart in 1953. Elvis coverde haar song drie jaar later. De versie van Elvis verkocht tien miljoen exemplaren, maar de dag van vandaag weten maar weinig fans dat ‘Hound Dog’ dus begon als een volkslied van zwarte vrouwelijke powerdiva. Thornton was ook de eerste artiest die opnamen had van het duo Leiber/Stoller. ‘I Smell A Rat’, ‘Nightmare’ werden net zoals ‘Hound Dog’ door dit duo bij elkaar neergepend. Afsluiten doet Big Mama hier met ‘I Ain’t No Fool Neither’. Sister Rosetta Tharpe geeft hier een schitterende interpretatie van blues en gospel.
 
CD 44; Sonny Terry en Eddie Taylor. Sonny Terry wordt vaak in een adem genoemd met Brownie McGhee. Terry is Piedmont en folkartiest die zich meester maakte over de mondharmonica. Hij vormde eerste een duo met Blind Boy Fuller, maar na diens overlijden vond hij zijn soulmate in Brownie McGhee. De openingsong ‘Bye Bye Baby Blues’ komt uit 1940 met Blind Boy Fuller op gitaar. ‘Harmonica Stomp’ is met Brownie McGhee op gitaar.
 
Volume 45 is toebedeeld aan Big Joe Turner en Eddie Cleanhead Vinson. Big Joe Turner was een ‘American blues shouter’ uit Kansas City, Missouri. Zijn krachtige stem leent zich hier perfect voor nummers als ‘Blues In The Midnight’, ‘Ice Man’, ‘It’s The Same Old Story’ en ‘Rebecca’, de B-kant van de single ‘It’s The Same Old Story’ uit 1945. Zijn grote nr.1 hit ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ ontbreekt helaas. Samen met de ‘Boss of The Blues’ staat Eddie Cleanhead Vinson op dit volume. De jump blues, jazz, bepop en R&B saxofonist en bluesshouter werd geboren in Houston, Texas. Hij was lid in de jaren ’30 van de blazerssectie in het orkest van Milton Larkin. Uit zijn rijkelijk gestoffeerde discografie zijn vooral ‘Too Many Woman Blues’, ‘Just A Dream’, ‘I’ve Been So Good’ en ‘King For A Day Blues’ knappe chapiters.
 
Twee grootheden vinden we op Volume 46. Texaan, singer-songwriter en multi-instrumentalist T-Bone Walker was een van de pioniers van de jumpblues. Zijn geëlektrificeerde bluessound leende zich perfect voor ‘They Call It Stormy Monday’, ‘Mean Old World’ en ‘T-Bone Jumps Again’. In 2018 plaatste het tijdschrift Rolling Stone hem op nummer 37 in de lijst van "De 100 grootste gitaristen aller tijden”. Jumpblues vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon maakte zijn eerste platen met Jay McShann in 1945. Twee jaar later hadden ze de hit ‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business’ in de hitlijst. Jimmy opent hier met ‘I’m Just a Lady’s Man’ uit de plaat ‘Jimmy Witherspoon meets Jay McShann’. Net zoals ‘Thelma Lee Blues’ en ‘Slow Your Speed’ uit de periode 1953 van Jimmy Witherspoon and His Orchestra.
 
Volume 47 is toebedeeld aan Muddy Waters en Junior Wells. Twee van de grootste Chicago blueslegenden. Eigenlijk mochten ze elk een CD op naam hebben. Hier geen ‘Mannish
 Boy’ ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, ‘I Just Wanna Make Love To You’, ‘I'm Ready’ of ‘Fourty Days, Fouty Nights’ van McKinley Morganfield. Maar wel verdoken parels als ‘Gypsy Woman’, Burr Clover Farm Blues’ en ‘Walking Blues’, origineel van Robert Johnson. Muddy prijkt in de lijst van ‘The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time’.
Muddy’s soulmate Junior Wells was een van de pioniers van de versterkte blues harpstijl die geassocieerd werd met het bluesmekka Chicago. Hij speelde met Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy en Earl Hooker. In 1952 maakte hij zijn eerste opnames toen hij Little Walter in de band van Muddy Waters verving en speelde op een van Waters Chess Records sessies in 1952. Het legendarische album ‘Hoodoo Man Blues’, met Buddy Guy, werd uitgebracht in 1965 door Delmark Records. De titeltrack van deze plaat figureert heir als openingssong. ‘So All Alone’, ‘Please Throw This Poor Dog A Bone’ en vooral ‘Lord Lord’ dat werd opgenomen in 1953 omvat Otis Spann en Muddy Waters in de band.
 
Sippie Wallace en Peetie Wheatstraw kleuren Volume 48. Bluesdiva Sippie Wallace nam in de periode 1923 en 1927 liefst meer dan veertigs songs op voor het label Okeh Records. Je kan en mag Sippie gerust rangschikken naast Ma Rainey, Ida Cox en andere Bessie Smith’s en Alberta Hunter’s. ‘Mail Train Blues’ komt uit 1926, net zoals ‘Dead Drunk Blues’ (1927) en de piano én kornet blues trage ‘A Man For Every Day’. Ook Peetie Wheatstraw was een invloedrijke blues artiest in de jaren ’30. Met zijn resonator gitaar betovert hij ons hier met songs als ‘Devil’s Son-In-Law’, ‘Gansters Blues’ en ‘Weeping Willow Blues’. Veel van Robert Johnson's opnames waren bewerkingen van liedjes van andere populaire artiesten uit die tijd. Johnson putte zwaar uit het repertoire van Wheatstraw. Wheatstraw's ‘Police Station Blues’ (hier niet op dit volume aanwezig)  vormt bijvoorbeeld de basis voor Johnson's ‘Terraplane Blues’. Zijn nickmane ‘Devils Son In Law’ resoneerde ook met het vergelijkbare beeld van en naar Robert Johnson.
 
‘Ganster Of Love’ Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson had een lange muzikale carrière. Hij was een voornaam bluesartiest die ook hoog scoorde in de populaire charts met ‘A Real Mother For Ya’ in 1977. Hij vermengde soul, R&B en funk doorheen zijn oeuvre. ‘Too Tired’, ‘Telephone Boogie’ en ‘Love Bandidt’ (Ganster Of Love) zijn originele Watson tracks. Big Joe Williams is een ander zwaargewicht op Volume 49. In zijn jonge jaren reisde hij veel tussen Chicago en New Orleans. En dit kenmerkt uiteraard zijn sound. Zijn blues hit ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’, op het label Bluesbird Records’ is een veel gecoverde song van hem. Delta blues songs als ‘Wanita’ en ‘His Spirit Lives On’ geven een distinctieve tune weer van zijn nine-string gitaar.
 
Volume 50 zijn toepasselijk voorbehouden aan Sonny Boy Williamson I (John Lee) en Sonny Boy Williamson II. (Rice Miller) Beiden zijn invloedrijke harpspelers. John Lee Curtis Williamson werd geboren in 1914 in Madison County, Tennessee. Hij overleed op amper 34-jarige leeftijd in Chicago. De harmonica-stijl van Williamson was van grote invloed op naoorlogse artiesten. Later in zijn carrière was hij een mentor voor veel opkomende bluesmuzikanten die naar Chicago verhuisden, waaronder Muddy Waters . ‘Black Gal Blues’ mag hier een open deur intrappen. Opwindende bluesharp en akoestische resonator gitaartunes. Net zoals de pianoboogie ‘Shake The Boogie’ uit 1946 (met Blind John Davis op piano) of de footstompin’ blues track ‘Better Cut That Out’
In een poging om ook enige bekendheid te verzilveren, begon Aleck "Rice" Miller in de vroege jaren ‘40 op te nemen en op te treden als Sonny Boy Williamson II. Hij was een vroege en invloedrijke bluesharp stylist die met succes opnamen had in de jaren vijftig en zestig. Miller gebruikte verschillende namen, waaronder Rice Miller en Little Boy Blue. ‘Don’t Start Me Talkin’ verscheen in 1955, drie jaar later ‘Crossed My Heart’ om hier af te sluiten met het jazzy ‘The Key’ (To Your Door).  Om de twee bluesartiesten te onderscheiden, werd John Lee Williamson bekend als Sonny Boy Williamson I of “The original Sonny Boy” en noemde Rice Miller zichzelf Sonny Boy Williamson II.
 
Volume 51 is voor Bukka en Josh White. Bukka White werd geboren in Houston, Mississippi. Hij was een achterneef van B.B. King. De moeder van White en de grootmoeder van King waren zussen. Met zijn National resonator gitaar, meestal in open tuning gespeeld, krijgen we hier nummers als ‘High Fever Blues’ uit de jaren ’30 en ‘Sleepy My Blues’.
‘Uncle Sam Sings’ zong ooit Josh White.  Piemontblues , country-blues en gospelmuziek zijn hier de hoofdmoot. Volume 52 is volledig voor Jimmy Yance. Een boogiewoogie pianist die werd geboren in Chicago. Over zijn geboortejaar is er nogal wat onduidelijkheid, wat niet ongewoon was in die tijd. Hij speelde in een boogiewoogiestijl, met een sterk herhaalde figuur in de linkerhand en melodische decoratie aan de rechterkant. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog speelde Yancey honkbal voor de Chicago All-Americans, een honkbalteam uit de Negro League . Van 1925 tot 1950 werkte hij als tuinman voor de Chicago White Sox . We krijgen hierr vooral werk uit de periode 1939 en 1940. ‘How Long Blues’, ‘South Side Stuff’ en het afsluitende ‘Shave’em Dry’. Hij werd ingewijd in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Een mooi slot van een al even schitterende CD-Box…!
