​Op het tweede volume, dat een vervolg is op ‘Boy, You Got More Blues Here’ (BAF14031), rond de vroege opnames Chester Burnett aka Howlin’ Wolf, krijgen we 10 songs die de Wolf opnam in 1951 en 1952. De opnames werden gemaakt door Sam Phillips in de beroemde SUN studio’s. Opnames die destijds niet werden uitgebracht. De reden waarom ze nu pas het daglicht zien, is omdat de masters en alternatieve versies pas verschillende decennia later ontdekt werden. Ontegensprekelijk is Howlin’ Wolf één van de allergrootsten binnen de Chicagoblues. Niet alleen letterlijk door zijn indrukwekkend postuur, maar vooral door zijn uitermate krachtige stem en dito harmonicaspel, die fantastisch samengingen met de rauwe en harde sound van Willie Johnsons elektrische gitaar.
Deze eerste opnames van Howlin’ Wolf werden gemaakt toen hij reeds ouder dan veertig jaar was. Sam Phillips was niet beroerd om risico’s te nemen en was dan ook de eerste die het potentieel in Wolf zag. Nooit eerder had hij iemand in de studio gehad die zo een krachtige en dynamische stem had. Phillips verkocht de opnames aan het in Chicago gevestigde Chess Records, dat met de eerste single ‘How Many More Years’ een nationale rhythm & blues hit behaalde. Het nummer bereikte er de vierde plaats in de charts. Howlin’ Wolf bleef 2 jaar bij Sam Phillips. Zoals je ook op het album hoort, nam hij de tijd om zijn zangstijl te laten evolueren en te perfectioneren. Howlin’ Wolf neemt de zang en de mondharmonica voor zijn rekening. Op ‘Decoration Blues’, ‘Well That’s All Right’, ‘Dorothy Mae’ en ‘Color And Kind’, laat hij het instrument over aan James Cotton, die later ook een succesvolle solocarrière uitbouwde. Begeleid wordt hij op gitaar, drums, piano en sporadisch op sax en trombone. Naast de sublieme prestaties van de Wolf, verdienen ook de begeleidende muzikanten een welgemeend applaus, in het bijzonder gitarist Willie Johnson en pianisten Albert Williams, L C Hubert en Bill Johnson.
Door het digitaliseren van de originele bronnen en het remasteren door middel van ‘state of the art’ studiotechnologie voor de vinyluitgave, klinken deze 2 volumes fantastisch. Bovendien vormen beide uitgaves de hoekstenen voor de ontwikkeling van de naoorlogse elektrische blues
Op het schitterend uitgevoerde 7 pagina’s tellende boekje geeft de Britse bluesexpert Martin Hawkins alle info rond de opnames. Boekje dat tevens een aantal knappe foto’s bevat.

​On the second volume, which is a sequel to 'Boy, You Got More Blues Here' (BAF14031), about the early recordings of Chester Burnett aka Howlin' Wolf, we get 10 songs that the Wolf recorded in 1951 and 1952. The recordings were made by Sam Phillips at the famous SUN studios. Recordings that were not released at the time. The reason why they are only now seeing the light of day is because the masters and alternate versions were not discovered until several decades later. Undeniably, Howlin 'Wolf is one of the greatest of the Chicago blues. Not only literally because of his impressive stature, but especially because of his extremely powerful voice and ditto harmonica playing, which went together fantastically with the raw and hard sound of Willie Johnson's electric guitar.
These first recordings of Howlin' Wolf were made when he was already over forty years old. Sam Phillips was not afraid to take risks and was the first to see the potential in Wolf. Never before had he had someone in the studio with such a powerful and dynamic voice. Phillips sold the recordings to Chicago-based Chess Records, which achieved a national rhythm & blues hit with the first single ‘How Many More Years’. The song reached number four on the charts. Howlin' Wolf stayed with Sam Phillips for 2 years. As you can hear on the album, he took the time to evolve and perfect his singing style. Howlin' Wolf takes care of the vocals and the harmonica. On 'Decoration Blues', 'Well That's All Right', 'Dorothy Mae' and 'Color And Kind', he leaves the instrument to James Cotton, who later also built a successful solo career. He is accompanied on guitar, drums, piano and occasionally on sax and trombone. In addition to the Wolf's sublime performance, the accompanying musicians also deserve a heartfelt round of applause, in particular guitarist Willie Johnson and pianists Albert Williams, L C Hubert and Bill Johnson.
By digitizing the original sources and remastering them, using state of the art studio technology for the vinyl release, these 2 volumes sound fantastic. Moreover, both releases form the cornerstones of the development of post-war electric blues
British blues expert Martin Hawkins provides all the information about the recordings on the beautifully executed 7-page booklet. Booklet that also contains a number of beautiful photos.
