​De band Max Merritt and The Meteors zal misschien niet dadelijk herinneringen bij je oproepen. In Nieuw-Zeeland is dat wel zo. Immers in de periode 1959 – 1963 waren zij er de ‘hottest’ rock-‘n-rollband die er, alsook in Australië het nieuwe muziekgenre introduceerde. Bovendien draaiden zij een hele tijd mee in de rock-‘n-rollscene.
Maxwell James Merritt werd geboren op 30 april 1941 in Christchurch, Nieuw-Zeeland. Reeds op 12 jarige leeftijd nam hij voor zijn plezier gitaarlessen. Op 15 jarige leeftijd zei hij de school vaarwel en ging hij werken in het bouwbedrijf van zijn vader. Op die leeftijd raakte Max ook in de ban de opkomende energieke rock-‘n-roll en het bouwbedrijf boeide hem niet langer. Van zijn wedde kocht hij zijn eerste elektrische gitaar en maakte hij zich sterk dat hij aan de kost zou komen als een gevierde rock-‘n-rollartiest. In de eerste versie van The Meteors perfectioneerde Max zijn performance. Vanaf 1955 waren Amerikaanse soldaten gestationeerd in Christchurch. Een jaar later waren Max Merritt and The Meteors vaak te gast op de Amerikaanse basis, waar ze voor het personeel de toenmalige Amerikaanse hits speelden. In 1959 tekenden Max en zijn kompanen een contract met His Master’s Voice. Datzelfde jaar maakten zij ook met ‘Get A Haircut / Dixieland Rock’ hun eerste opname. Een originele opname gekoppeld aan een cover die Elvis zong in de film ‘King Creole’. Voor de tweede opname werd hetzelfde patroon gevolgd. De originele rocker ‘Kiss Curl’ kreeg als b kantje de cover ‘You Made Me Love You’. De line-up van The Meteors onderging nogal wat wisselingen en voor de opnames van de langspeler ‘C’mon Let’s Go’ werden naast The Meteors tevens studiomuzikanten ingehuurd. Begin 1962 verkaste de band naar Australië. Daar namen ze voor His Master’s Voice twee singles op met coverversies van nummers van Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran en de Britse groep Dave Sampson and The Hunters. Nadat His Master’s Voice het contract beëindigde, tekende de band nog bij de Nieuw-Zeelandse Zodiac en Viking labels. Midden jaren ’70 ontstonden de eerste punkbands en alhoewel Max toen bij het Arista label onderdak vond, bleef het verdere succes uit. Desondanks raakten zijn nummers ‘Slippin’ Away’ en ‘Hey, Western Union Man’ wel in de Australische charts. Aan het eind van het decennium trok Merritt naar Los Angeles. Gedurende de laatste zeven jaar van zijn leven werd hij getroffen door een zeldzame auto-immuunziekte waarbij antilichamen worden aangemaakt die de longen en nieren aanvallen. Max Merritt overleed op 24 september 2020 in volle coronaperiode, zodat er geen uitvaartplechtigheid kon plaatsvinden. Datzelfde jaar werd hij opgenomen in de Nieuw-Zeelandse ‘Music Hall Of Fame’.
Op ‘Get A Haircut’ plaatst het Rockstar label aan de hand van 24 tracks Max Merritt and The Meteors in de spots. De tracks bevatten 22 opnames die Max Merritt samen met The Meteors maakte. De overige 2 nummers nam hij als soloartiest op. Alle songs werden ingeblikt tussen 1959 en 1963. De tracks komen van de 45 toertjes en van de lp ‘C’mon Let’s Go’ en bevatten zowel eigen nummers als coverversies. Het wordt al vlug duidelijk dat Max Merritt and The Meteors de vurige rock-‘n-roll in zich hadden. De originelen ‘Get A Haircut’ en ‘Kiss Curl’ moeten zeker niet de duimen leggen voor de Amerikaanse rock-‘n-roll. Merritt zingt overtuigend en The Meteors leggen een uitermate strakke muzikale basis. Daarnaast is ‘Weekend’ een pracht van een song, waarin de meer akoestische zijde van Max aan bod komt.
Merritts vakmanschap komt wel heel indrukwekkend aan de oppervlakte in de traditional ‘I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen’, een folksong die hij met verve omtovert in een volwaardig rock-‘n-rollnummer. Superieur!
Dat Max zich ook perfect kon vinden in covers laat hij horen in o.a. ‘Sea Cruise’, de van Elvis gekende slow ‘I Was The One’, ‘Tennessee Waltz’, Ray Charles’ soulvolle rhythm & blues ‘Hallelujah I Love Her So’ en Cochrans ‘C’mon Everybody’. Voor leuke instrumentals zorgen het van Sandy Nelson geleende ‘Teen Beat’ en het originele ‘Soft Surfie’, een pracht van een surfnummer. Als soloartiest horen we Max in het door gitaar gestuurde instrumentale ‘The Slow One’ en het eveneens instrumentale rockende ‘Cossack’, waarmee ook het album eindigt.
‘Get A Haircut’ van Max Merritt and The Meteors is een meer dan formidabel album en zeker het ontdekken waard.

The band Max Merritt and The Meteors may not immediately bring back memories for you. That is the case in New Zealand. After all, in the period 1959 - 1963 they were the hottest rock 'n' roll band that introduced the new music genre there, as well as in Australia. Moreover, they were involved in the rock 'n' roll scene for a long time.
Maxwell James Merritt was born on April 30, 1941 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Already at the age of 12 he took guitar lessons for fun. At the age of 15, he left school and went to work in his father's construction company. At that age, Max also fell under the spell of the emerging energetic rock 'n' roll and the construction company no longer interested him. He used his wages to buy his first electric guitar and made it a point to make a living as a celebrated rock 'n' roll artist. In the first version of The Meteors, Max perfected his performance. From 1955, American soldiers were stationed in Christchurch. A year later, Max Merritt and The Meteors were often guests at the American base, where they played the American hits of the time for the staff. In 1959, Max and his colleagues signed a contract with His Master's Voice. That same year they also made their first recording with 'Get A Haircut / Dixieland Rock'. An original recording linked to a cover that Elvis sang in the film 'King Creole'. The same pattern was followed for the second recording. The original rocker 'Kiss Curl' was given the cover 'You Made Me Love You' as a b side. The line-up of The Meteors underwent quite a few changes and studio musicians were also hired in addition to The Meteors for the recording of the long player 'C'mon Let's Go'. In early 1962 the band moved to Australia. There they recorded two singles for His Master's Voice with cover versions of songs by Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and the British group Dave Sampson and The Hunters. After His Master's Voice terminated the contract, the band signed with the New Zealand Zodiac and Viking labels. The first punk bands emerged in the mid-1970s and although Max then found refuge on the Arista label, further success failed. Nevertheless, his songs 'Slippin' Away' and 'Hey, Western Union Man' did hit the Australian charts. At the end of the decade, Merritt moved to Los Angeles. During the last seven years of his life, he was affected by a rare autoimmune disease that produces antibodies that attack the lungs and kidneys. Max Merritt died on September 24, 2020 in the middle of the corona period, so no funeral ceremony could take place. That same year he was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall Of Fame.
On 'Get A Haircut' the Rockstar label puts Max Merritt and The Meteors in the spotlight on the basis of 24 tracks. The tracks contain 22 recordings that Max Merritt made together with The Meteors. He recorded the other 2 songs as a solo artist. All songs were recorded between 1959 and 1963. The tracks come from the 45 tours and the LP 'C'mon Let's Go' and contain both original songs and cover versions. It quickly becomes clear that Max Merritt and The Meteors had the fiery rock 'n' roll in temp. The origineels 'Get A Haircut' and 'Kiss Curl' should certainly not turn a blind eye to American rock 'n' roll. Merritt sings convincingly and The Meteors lay an extremely tight musical foundation. In addition, 'Weekend' is a beautiful song, in which the more acoustic side of Max is discussed.
Merritt's craftsmanship comes to the surface very impressively in the traditional 'I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen', a folk song that he transforms with verve into a full-fledged rock 'n' roll song. Superior!
The fact that Max could also relate perfectly to covers is evident in, among others, 'Sea Cruise', the Elvis-known slow 'I Was The One', 'Tennessee Waltz', Ray Charles' soulful rhythm & blues 'Hallelujah I Love Her So' and Cochran's ‘C'mon Everybody’. The 'Teen Beat' borrowed from Sandy Nelson and the original 'Soft Surfie', a beautiful surf song, provide nice instrumentals. As a solo artist we hear Max in the guitar-driven instrumental 'The Slow One' and the equally instrumental rocking 'Cossack', with which the album also ends.
'Get A Haircut' by Max Merritt and The Meteors is a more than formidable album and definitely worth discovering.
