Een tijd geleden kreeg je de review van ‘PJ Proby Presley Style’, die je trouwens hier nog eens kan herlezen . Dat album bevatte demo’s die aan Presley gepresenteerd werden en waaruit de King zijn keuze kon maken. Nu Proby was niet de enige die met een complete band demo’s voor Elvis maakte. Iemand die dat ook deed was de in 1930 geboren singer/songwriter Randy Starr. Zowat half jaren ’50 schreef Randy songs die werden opgenomen door o.a. Jackie Wilson, Connie Francis en The Kingston Trio. In 1957 scoorde Randy zelf als performer met het poppy ‘After School’. Zijn grootste successen zou hij echter boeken als songschrijver. Tussen 1963 en 1968 schreef en produceerde Starr pakweg 70 nummers, waarvan je er op dit album 35 te horen krijgt. Starr zelf is te horen op 14 tracks en Kenny Karen neemt er 13 voor haar rekening. Voor de overige nummers zijn Malcolm Dodds en Jerry Keller de uitvoerende artiesten. De demo’s die Randy voor Elvis maakte waren enorm professioneel. Demo’s waar Presley er persoonlijk maar liefst 12 uitkoos voor de soundtrack van zijn films. Dit eerste volume maakt deel uit van een mini serie bestaande uit 2 cd’s, die in totaal een 70 songs zullen bevatten. Op dit eerste volume krijg je alvast 6 songs die Presley in zijn films gebruikte. Dat zijn ‘Kissin’ Cousins’ uit de gelijknamige film, ‘The Yellow Rose Of Texas’ uit ‘Viva Las Vegas’, ‘Look Out, Broadway’ uit ‘Frankie and Johnny’, ‘Datin’’ uit ‘Paradise, Hawaiian Style’, ‘Adam and Evil’ uit ‘Spinout’ en ‘The Girl I Never Loved’ uit ‘Clambake’.
Vanaf de eerste track wordt het duidelijk dat Randy Starr zich enorm goed kon inleven in de smaak van Presley en bovendien het commercieel karakter niet uit het oog verloor. Daarbij dient ook wel aangestipt te worden dat het songs zijn die wat sfeer scheppen betreft bij zijn films aanleunen. Het is dan ook geen wonder dat Elvis 12 composities van Starr uitkoos voor de soundtrack van zijn films.
Een bijkomend pluspunt is dat de Presley fan hier uit eerste hand de songs kan beluisteren, net zoals de King ze voorgeschoteld kreeg. Bovendien krijgt ook Randy Starr de aandacht die hij toch wel verdient. Leuk is tevens dat je deze demo’s kan vergelijken met de opnames uit de films. Op die manier kan je de evolutie van een nummer vanaf de songschrijverstafel tot de opnames in de studio volgen.
Van de 35 demo-opnames verscheen er nog maar één. De overige nummers verschijnen nu voor het eerst op cd of vinyl.
Voor de liner-notes kon Bear Family Records rekenen op de onlangs overleden Brit Trevor Simpson, die jarenlang in nauw contact stond met Randy Starr en hem ook meerdere malen interviewde. Daarnaast bevat het 34 pagina’s tellende booklet historische foto’s zowel van de artiesten op dit album als van Presley.

Some time ago you got the review of 'PJ Proby Presley Style', which you can re-read here. That album contained demos that were presented to Presley and from which the King could make his choice. But Proby was not the only one who made demos with a complete band for Elvis. Someone who also did that was the singer/songwriter Randy Starr, born in 1930. Around the mid-1950s, Randy wrote songs that were recorded by Jackie Wilson, Connie Francis and The Kingston Trio, among others. In 1957 Randy himself scored as a performer with the poppy 'After School'. However, he would achieve his greatest successes as a songwriter. Between 1963 and 1968, Starr wrote and produced roughly 70 songs, 35 of which you will hear on this album. Starr himself can be heard on 14 tracks and Kenny Karen is responsible for 13. Malcolm Dodds and Jerry Keller are the performing artists for the remaining songs. The demos Randy made for Elvis were extremely professional. Demos of which Presley personally selected no fewer than 12 for the soundtrack of his films. This first volume is part of a mini series consisting of 2 CDs, which will contain a total of 70 songs. On this first volume you get 6 songs that Presley used in his films. These are 'Kissin' Cousins' from the film of the same name, 'The Yellow Rose Of Texas' from 'Viva Las Vegas', 'Look Out, Broadway' from 'Frankie and Johnny', 'Datin'' from 'Paradise, Hawaiian Style' , 'Adam and Evil' from 'Spinout' and 'The Girl I Never Loved' from 'Clambake'.
From the first track it becomes clear that Randy Starr was able to empathize very well with Presley's taste and also did not lose sight of the commercial character. It should also be noted that these are songs that are similar to his films in terms of creating atmosphere. It is therefore no wonder that Elvis chose 12 of Starr's compositions for the soundtrack of his films.
An additional plus is that the Presley fan can listen to the songs here first-hand, just as the King was presented with them. Moreover, Randy Starr also gets the attention he deserves. It is also nice that you can compare these demos with the recordings from the films. This way you can follow the evolution of a song from the songwriter's table to the recording in the studio.
Of the 35 demo recordings, only one was released. The other songs are now appearing on CD or vinyl for the first time.
For the liner notes, Bear Family Records could count on the recently deceased Trevor Simpson, who was in close contact with Randy Starr for years and also interviewed him several times. In addition, the 34-page booklet contains historical photos of both the artists on this album and Presley.
