​Je zou het misschien niet dadelijk verwachten…..beatgroepen die countrysongs coveren. Niet alle songs zijn strictly countrynummers, sommigen geven eerder een folkgevoel. Niet verwonderlijk omdat er in het Engeland van de jaren zestig, de skiffle en folk hoogtij vierden. Denk maar aan John, Paul en George die als skifflegroep The Quarrymen de basis legden voor The Beatles. In het kielzog van de Fab Four schoten de toen nog ‘beatgroepen’ genoemde bands, zowel in Engeland als elders, als paddenstoelen uit de grond. Voor sommigen wachtte er een schitterende muzikale carrière, terwijl anderen net zo vlug van het toneel verdwenen al ze erop verschenen waren. Het Duitse Bear Family Records bundelt op ‘BEATin’ On Country Music’ 30 tracks van beatgroepen die zich aan country- en soms folksongs waagden. Bekende bands die de revue passeren zijn o.a. The Searchers, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, The Spencer Davis Group, The Merseybeats, The Nashville Teens, The Hollies, The Incrowd en The Lords. Vele van de leden van deze groepen en van de minder bekende bands op dit album groeiden trouwens op met folk, country, western en blues. Ze kenden dus de genres en wisten ze met klasse een beatjasje aan te meten. Dat laten Alex Harvey and His Soul Band al meteen horen in hun op een stevige beat drijvende versie van ‘You Are My Sunshine’. The Downliners Sect zijn driemaal aanwezig. Op ‘Above And Beyond’, ‘Midnight Special’ en ‘Wreck Of The Old ‘97’ houden ze het toch ietsje meer country. Dat geldt trouwens ook voor de meer dan formidabele rockende countryversie van ‘Ruby Ann’ door King Size Taylor and The Dominoes. The Poor Things laten met ‘Danny Boy’ horen dat ook een croonerversie tot de mogelijkheden van beatgroepen behoorde. De alom gekende Billy J. Kramer zet samen met zijn The Dakotas een super knappe versie neer van de ‘all time classic country song’ ‘Tennessee Waltz’. Steve Winwood zou nog een prachtige solocarrière uitbouwen, maar op het ogenblik van de opnames van de door Ray Charles bekend gemaakte pop en jazz klassieker ‘Georgia On My Mind’, maakte de piepjonge Winwood nog deel uit van The Spencer Davis Group. Schitterende versie in de stijl van Ray Charles, met een sublieme tempowisselende solo op piano. ‘Sixteen Tons’, de Merle Travis song is reeds ontelbare malen gecoverd. Johnny Sandons versie mag zeker tot één van de betere gerekend worden. Jeff Lynn en Roy Wood maakten ooit deel uit van Mike Sheridan and The Nightriders. Dat er talent in die groep zat, wordt duidelijk in hun versie van Charlie Richs ‘Lonely Weekends’. Hits scoorden The Hollies aan de lopende band. Wat een heerlijke cover zetten zij neer van Roy Orbisons ‘Candy Man’, met een knappe partij op mondharmonica. De Nederbeat wordt vertegenwoordigd door de uit Den Haag komende The Incrowd, hier met een mooie meeslepende versie van Charlie Richs ‘I’ll Make It All Up To You’, dat heel wat blues in zich draagt. The Lords werden algemeen gezien als de Duitse Beatles en begonnen net als hun grote voorbeelden als een skifflegroep. Hier krijg je ze met Duitstalige lyrics in ‘Tobacco Road’. In schoonheid wordt er ook afgesloten door The Bobby Patrick Big Six met een indrukwekkende licht jazzy versie van Hank Williams’ ‘Your Cheatin’ Heart’.
‘BEATin’ On Country Music’ is niet enkel een fantastisch tijdsdocument maar laat ook horen dat de beatgroepen van de sixties tot heel wat meer in staat waren dan de singles waarmee ze de hitlijsten bestormden. Deze compilatie toont aan dat er best heel wat talent zat in deze bands, want om deze versies van bekende nummers te maken, moet je heel wat ‘talent and skills’ bezitten. Een absolute aanrader!

You might not immediately expect it...beat groups covering country songs. Not all songs are strictly country songs, some have a folk feel. Not surprising because in England in the sixties, skiffle and folk were at their height. Just think of John, Paul and George, who, as the skiffle group The Quarrymen, laid the foundation for The Beatles. In the wake of the Fab Four, the bands then called 'beat groups' sprang up like mushrooms, both in England and elsewhere. For some, a brilliant musical career awaited, while others disappeared from the stage as quickly as they had appeared on it. The German Bear Family Records bundles 30 tracks by beat groups that ventured into country and sometimes folk songs on 'BEATin' On Country Music'. Well-known bands featured include The Searchers, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, The Spencer Davis Group, The Merseybeats, The Nashville Teens, The Hollies, The Incrowd and The Lords. Many of the members of these groups and of the lesser-known bands on this album grew up with folk, country, western and blues. So they knew the genres and knew how to give them a beat jacket with class. Alex Harvey and His Soul Band immediately demonstrate this in their verspon of 'You Are My Sunshine', driven by a strong beat. The Downliners Sect are present three times. On 'Above And Beyond', 'Midnight Special' and 'Wreck Of The Old '97' they keep it a little more country. This also applies to the more than formidable rocking country version of 'Ruby Ann' by King Size Taylor and The Dominoes. With 'Danny Boy', The Poor Things show that a crooner version was also possible for beat groups. The well-known Billy J. Kramer, together with his The Dakotas, delivers a super clever version of the 'all time classic country song' 'Tennessee Waltz'. Steve Winwood would go on to have a wonderful solo career, but at the time of the recording of the pop and jazz classic 'Georgia On My Mind', made famous by Ray Charles, the very young Winwood was still part of The Spencer Davis Group. Beautiful version in the style of Ray Charles, with a sublime tempo-changing solo on piano. 'Sixteen Tons', the Merle Travis song has already been covered countless times. Johnny Sandon's version can certainly be considered one of the better ones. Jeff Lynn and Roy Wood were once part of Mike Sheridan and The Nightriders. That there was talent in that group is clear in their version of Charlie Rich's 'Lonely Weekends'. The Hollies scored hits all the time. What a wonderful cover they perform of Roy Orbison's 'Candy Man', with a beautiful part on harmonica. The Nederbeat is represented by The Incrowd from The Hague, here with a beautiful compelling version of Charlie Rich's 'I'll Make It All Up To You', which has a lot of blues in it. The Lords were generally seen as the German Beatles and, like their great examples, started as a skiffle group. Here you get them with German lyrics in 'Tobacco Road'. The Bobby Patrick Big Six also concludes on a beautiful note with an impressive slightly jazzy version of Hank Williams' 'Your Cheatin' Heart'.
'BEATin' On Country Music' is not only a fantastic document of the times, but also shows that the beat groups of the sixties were capable of a lot more than the singles with which they stormed the charts. This compilation shows that there was quite a lot of talent in these bands, because to make these versions of well-known songs, you have to have a lot of 'talent and skills'. Highly recommended!
