​Wanneer stemmen prachtig blenden dan geeft ons dat een aangenaam en warm gevoel. Niet verwonderlijk dat voor velen doo-wop geassocieerd wordt met Kerstmis. Het is immers in die periode dat de hemelse samenzang van gouden stemmen zorgen voor een emotionele warmte. Begrijpelijk maar toch ook een beetje onterecht om doo-wop steevast aan de Kerstdagen te linken. Immers doo-wop heeft ook het talent om melancholische emoties vocaal te uiten. Deze emoties kunnen hun oorsprong hebben in bijvoorbeeld economische ontberingen, maar kunnen net zo goed voortkomen uit relaties en dit zowel positief als negatief. En hoe kan je emoties beter tot leven brengen dan door de stem. Emoties en doo-wop matchen dus perfect. Dat verklaart meteen de titel ‘Blues Meets Doo-Wop’ van deze nieuwe door het Koko Mojo label uitgebrachte serie. Immers ook bij blues draait het om emoties. En ook in dit muziekgenre zijn ontberingen en gebeurtenissen in de relationele sfeer meestal het onderwerp. Bijgevolg is er een duidelijke band tussen doo-wop en blues. Het gaat zelfs verder. Artiesten van beide genres namen hun nummers op voor dezelfde labels, in dezelfde studio’s en deden vaak beroep op dezelfde muzikanten. Redenen genoeg voor samensteller Little Victor aka The ‘MoJo’ man om voor dit eerste van vier volumes, 28 tracks bij mekaar te zoeken die, zowel in doo-wop als in blues, hieraan voldoen. Starten doen we met het overbekende ‘Got My Mojo Working’ dat door Ann Cole samen met The Suburbans van knappe vocalen wordt voorzien. Jimmy Reed zocht zijn inspiratie voor het bluesy ‘I’m A Love You’ in de relationele sfeer. Wanneer beide genres in één song samenkomen, wordt het wel heel schitterend. Dit kregen Hank Ballard and The Midnighters klaar in ‘I Got A Mind To Leave You’. Datzelfde lukte ook Lillian Offitt in ‘My Man Is A Lover’, waar ze voor het vocale werk steun krijgt van The 4 Duchesses. Diezelfde 4 Duchesses zijn ook van de partij op Magic Sams ‘You Don’t Have To Work’. De twee genres werken ook in een uptempo song, zoals in ‘Baby Baby’ van Pete Willis and The Four Royals. Een ander heerlijk uptempo nummer komt er met ‘Chicken Blues’ van The Dominoes samen met Rene Hall. Zelfs Bo Diddley deed beroep op doo-wop groep The Moonglows voor zijn ‘Diddley Daddy’. Voor de mondharmonicasolo op het nummer huurde hij Little Walter in. Eerder rockend injecteren The Spaniels doo-wop in ‘Hey Sister Lizzie’. The Andantes zorgden op hun beurt voor hemelse backing vocals op John Lee Hookers ‘Frisco Blues’. Waarschijnlijk zijn The Golden Gate Quartet de meeste bekende vocale groep in gospel en blues. Beide genres zijn ook van de partij in ‘I Wanna Know’.  Een meer dan voortreffelijke doo-wopversie maakten The Thunderbirds van ‘Baby Let’s Play House’, ook gecoverd door Presley. Memphis Slim was een zanger en pianist die vooral bekend was omwille van zijn boogiewoogie nummers. In ‘I Guess I’m A Fool’ neemt hij wat gas terug en zet hij met The Vagabonds op de achtergrond een formidabele slowblues neer. Voortreffelijk doet ook Pee Wee Crayton het in het bluesy ‘I Found My Peace Of Mind’, met heerlijke achtergrondzang van The El Dorados. Swingende rhythm & blues mag je dan weer verwachten met ‘Red Light’ van Roy Milton.
De hier aangehaalde songs zijn maar voorbeelden van wat je te wachten staat. Immers alle 28 tracks zijn van een zodanig hoog niveau dat ze eigenlijk allemaal een vermelding verdienden. Dit zou echter de review veel te lang maken. Raadpleeg daarom zeker het gedeelte ‘DETAIL ALBUM’.
De ‘Blues Meets Doo-Wop’ serie brengt je de allerbeste opnames van beide genres. ‘The best of both worlds’ , hier voor het eerst samengebracht in de serie ‘Blues Meets Doo-Wop’. Wij kijken reeds uit naar het tweede volume.

When voices blend beautifully, it gives us a pleasant and warm feeling. It is not surprising that for many doo-wop is associated with Christmas. After all, it is during that period that the heavenly singing of golden voices provide emotional warmth. Understandable but also a bit unfair to always link doo-wop to Christmas. After all, doo-wop also has the talent to express melancholic emotions vocally. These emotions can have their origins in economic hardship, for example, but can just as easily arise from relationships, both positive and negative. And what better way to bring emotions to life than through the voice. So emotions and doo-wop match perfectly. That immediately explains the title 'Blues Meets Doo-Wop' of this new series released by the Koko Mojo label. After all, blues is also about emotions. And in this music genre too, hardships and events in the relational sphere are usually the subject. Consequently, there is a clear connection between doo-wop and blues. It goes even further. Artists of both genres recorded their songs for the same labels, in the same studios and often used the same musicians. Reasons enough for compiler Little Victor aka The 'MoJo' man to find 28 tracks for this first volume of four volumes that meet these requirements, both in doo-wop and blues. We start with the well-known 'Got My Mojo Working', which is provided with beautiful vocals by Ann Cole together with The Suburbans. Jimmy Reed sought his inspiration for the bluesy 'I'm A Love You' in the relational sphere. When both genres come together in one song, it becomes very beautiful. Hank Ballard and The Midnighters achieved this in 'I Got A Mind To Leave You'. Lillian Offitt also achieved the same in 'My Man Is A Lover', where she receives support for the vocal work from The 4 Duchesses. The same 4 Duchesses are also present on Magic Sam's 'You Don't Have To Work'. The two genres also work in an uptempo song, such as in 'Baby Baby' by Pete Willis and The Four Royals. Another wonderful up-tempo song comes with 'Chicken Blues' by The Dominoes together with Rene Hall. Even Bo Diddley called on doo-wop group The Moonglows for his 'Diddley Daddy'. He hired Little Walter for the harmonica solo on the song. The Spaniels inject their rocking doo-wop into 'Hey Sister Lizzie'. The Andantes, in turn, provided heavenly backing vocals on John Lee Hooker's 'Frisco Blues'. The Golden Gate Quartet are probably the most famous vocal group in gospel and blues. Both genres are also present in 'I Wanna Know'. The Thunderbirds made a more than excellent doo-wop version of 'Baby Let's Play House', also covered by Presley. Memphis Slim was a singer and pianist best known for his boogie-woogie songs. In 'I Guess I'm A Fool' he slows down a bit and creates a formidable slow blues with The Vagabonds in the background. Pee Wee Crayton also does an excellent job in the bluesy 'I Found My Peace Of Mind', with wonderful background vocals from The El Dorados. You can expect swinging rhythm & blues with 'Red Light' by Roy Milton.
The songs mentioned here are just examples of what to expect. After all, all 28 tracks are of such a high level that they all deserved a mention. However, this would make the review far too long. Therefore, be sure to consult the 'DETAIL ALBUM' section.
